This episode's title is based on Greek mythology and it's warning tale of Pandora and the box she was told to never open. Her curiosity caused her to open the box and release evil into the world, evil that could never again be contained.
The end credits play the Blue Danube waltz; a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Here HAL the computer is decommissioned by pulling out the energy panels.
