The story is well-plotted, the charachters are interesting and well developed. As for the romance, I did like it, but I wish there weren't so many episodes on a more depressing side, with all the troubles going on. That is my own personal taste though, so don't let it bother you. The ending was great and really heartwarmng. I can only recommend.

an enjoyable bit of kawaii angst
ganymedes198531 March 2019
When friendships and role models slowly become "more", and the troubles that come with accepting that.

It's nicely animated and generally has a good amount of angst worked into each episode, balanced with cute "bro" moments over the dinner table. As an adult it tugged mildly at the nostalgia with accepting myself during my teenage years, but I'm guessing the high school setting was a deliberate choice and aimed at younger audiences who are currently in similar situations as our 4 main characters.

Pretty good.

I'm not a big fan of romance, but this is extremely well done. The story and characters are cute and well-written. The animation is fairly good. I like the artwork in this series. It has its own style and looks nice. The voice acting is very good as well. There isn't a whole lot of conflict other than the love story, but it doesn't really need any. I'd definitely recommend watching this series if you are a fan of romance, because this series does it very well.

edit - I will say that upon thinking about it, these leads do play into some heteronormative stereotypes and there are a lot of somewhat unhealthy aspects of the relationship. I only watched about 5 episodes of this show, and while I would still recommend this, its not perfect or anything.

Also, I'm gay.

This Is How You Do A Romance!
nievisnowbirb17 November 2017
This has been and will remain one of the best romance animes on the market, Especially where BL is concerned. It's got two romances, the better one is centric luckily. The characters are dynamic, the writing is good, and the story isn't over complicated. It's a gem in the Slice Of Life genre.

For a 12 part series, They did such a good job of fleshing out the characters and making you feel things for them. It's got plenty of twist and turns, It doesn't go too fast or too slow, It's just right.

This is one of those good animes that you can't really say anything too bad about. It's comedic, romantic, and it does a good job of getting you to care for these characters and how their "forbidden" romance works out, and I think that's awesome!

Hitorijime my hero review

Warning: Spoilers
It was a very cute, fun, silly watch for sure. I thought it was great. The characters, plot, characters development, storyline were all really good. I thought the teacher x student was a very cute couple. I like it Becuse it wasn't words Becuse they knew each other before they were student and teacher. I thought the two friends who got together was cute too. Both couples had great chemistry together. There were both bl lovers. I thought the friends who got together needed more story to them. But what we got about them was good. The animation was well drawn. I recommend this anime to very one no matter the age.

one of the best gay animes out there

Warning: Spoilers
I absouletely loved watching the rest of this series because it was just fantastic the way it turned out. I even liked the two couples, they just matched together so well. Masahiro is like this kid who doesn't want to bug anyone because his mother isn't really looking after him properly and just doesn't know who to be with. I was freaking glad that the street fighter/maths teacher Kousuke came to his rescue and the two just hit it off from there. I was delighted that both of them were engaged after admitting their love to each other. We move on to Kensuke and Asaya, my heart melted when they first kissed beneath the railway line. Regardless that Kensuke is an easily excitable guy and Asaya likes to keep to himself, they both really stood out.

Literally I could go all day talking about how brillant all the lads were but seriously, this kind of anime puts you in such great mood. Even if you're not into gay anime or feel down in the dumps, this would be a a perfect to lift your spirits up! I give this a 9/10 rating <3

Moving & a heartfelt love story
niruudukala6 January 2021
Loved this anime! It almost had me in tears, that's how moving I felt the storyline was. I'm not in to LGBT romance in anime. Felt like this opened a whole beer anime genre that I haven't explored yet. I would highly recommend this to any one who enjoy a light realistic romance story. Hope there'll be a season 2.

Predatory "Love" Story
FilmFanatic0078 May 2023
I genuinely don't understand how this is considered a beloved LGBTQIA+ love story... There are two relationships in this series. One is between two childhood friends. This story could play out innocently enough, but Hasekura pursues Ohshiba so aggressively that it veers into sexual coercion. He literally says "sleep with me or cut ties". He also forces kisses onto him and requires Ohshiba to let him touch him sexually for 5 minutes in order to maintain their friendship. Despite that abuse, they become a couple.

The other pairing is between Ohshiba's adult brother (who teaches math at their high school) and his best friend, Setagawa. Setagawa has no family or support system outside of the Ohshiba family. He says several times this is the only place he truly felt he belonged. So the fact that this adult man is pressuring this teenage boy into a relationship really puts Setagawa in a vulnerable position.

There's also the fact that several people (other kids and even adults) find out about this student/teacher pairing and, not only does no one seem to think it's inappropriate, no one does anything to help this child escape his abusive situation.

Praise for Memeco Arii
adayyyy28 December 2021
Hitorijime My Hero is an amazing just wanting a place to belong and finding that person and place story. Masahiro is a kind hearted and gentle teen who is neglected as a child, shown little to no parental love or support and has never known love. Kousuke is a man who rehabilitates youth by letting his fist fly and relay every word his mouth is too busy smoking to speak. Both feel like they're not enough and that they're just living to live until a love confession brings them together. Although, their road to happiness is bumpy and filled with some difficult situations and conversations, Masahiro and Kousuke are determined to have their happily ever after. Beautifully written and drawn, this story hooks you from episode 1 and fills you with tears, laughs and overall heartfelt goodness. I have watched season 1 more times than I can count and loved it so much I even started purchasing the manga which is just as great.

Touched me right in the feels

Warning: Spoilers
I totally thought this show was going to be focused around Asaya and Kensuke at first, but wow, that forbidden romance but was so intense and sweet. The way that Kousuke tried to prevent it at first just opened those floodgates for one of the most turbulent relationships I've ever seen, and I was hanging on to every second of it.

What comes next?
markusmiertschink31 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not much to add to the previous guys reviewing this well written, cute and romantic anime.

I loved the drame, the self findings of the main characters. Some hot scenes too without being really explicit - could be more though :) And man - I really dig the title song. I do not understand a word but it is really nice.

My hopes are low to get another season (after all it was produced 5 years ago). But would be nice to see how all was working out.

Unfortunately the main topic was somehow not really resolved in how the teacher and the student could get more open about their relationship without the teacher loosing his job. Or maybe I missed it somehow. It would probably resolve automatically if the studend graduates and leaves school...

So much happened in such a short series. I liked it very much and hope some more is coming...

Just watch the first 3 episodes
RogueBulb28 April 2022
The first three episodes where great 9/10 kensuke and hasekura felt great together for the most part maybe a little rushed but still good. But oh boy doesn't he want Eire now stuff come in we have a 16 or 17 year old dating a fricking 28 year old who isn't their teacher and they play it off as normal it's so weird I kinda feel like hasekura wasn't completely supportive of it which makes me love him more and the only good thing from episodes 4-12 was kensuke being hilariously and super hyper and hasekura being a good bf to Now I know it's fiction but still It was kinda uncomfortable to sit through and I was rooting for their breakup.
