Silliness
killercharm15 August 2020
Silliness about a self-centered, college kid, peripheral, internet "star" who cares only about her viewership and does whatever it takes to increase it. When she goes missing her plain-jane bestie comes to the rescue. Some cartoonish elements are bewildering like the soft sculpture cadavers.

No plot for an hour
mickeythechamp14 August 2023
Why do I ever watch anything on Plex?

Another late night Plex hunt finding this. Clickbait a movie with no plot and everything about it is done poorly. Acting, camerawork, music, plot. Nothing really works here. Blending horror and comedy is tough and very few people can do it successfully. Doing it because your horror movie wasn't scary to begin with is something else. This is a no effort movie dumped onto whatever streaming service will have it and, in the end, it succeeds at nothing. It´s not scary, it´s not funny, it´s nothing.

An internet celebrity and her nerdy friend is stalked by an insane fan.

The acting in this movie is really bad. From the delivery to the face acting everything is clearly someone´s first gig. The way lines are delivered makes everything sound like no one cares about anything in the movie and except for some screaming at the end, everything is delivered horrendously. The voice over at times doesn't help either. Some scenes clearly had the lines dupped over and the sound mixing is not hiding it well.

This isn't helped by the most stale camera ever. All the angels are basic and boring and nothing is really happening in frames. It´s just wide shuts and close ups without any meaning or variety to it.

The comedy goes from bland to unfunny to kid's humour. It´s all over the place and has no tone nor identity. The delivery doesn't help it either, making the actors sound like they don't really believe the jokes either. The humour is fart humour, sex humour and some "I´m smarter than you" humour. Again it´s kidish and not really something worth seeing.

This movie says nothing, even though it had a chance to do so. About fame and internet culture. About real and fake friendships. Instead it wastes it´s entire runtime with basically nothing and the plot really kicks in the last 15 minutes of this 1 hour 14 movie, I´m not joking. Nothing happens in the rest of the movie. You could look away from the screen for an hour and still kind of follow along. It´s insane to me how bad this movie is and how poorly executed it is. And the twist really is wasted and the mystrey is easily solwed, yet really stupid in general.

This is just a huge waste of time and really offers you nothing. Nothing over the top, nothing to laugh at, nothing to cling to for any form of entertainment. You are just left with nothing here other than wasting time.

Clever writing!
cbjcornish4 April 2019
Horror isn't usually my thing but after discovering this gem, found it to be much more: a satirical comedy, thriller, and character-driven piece. The performances, visuals, and directing choices were fun but what stood out for me was the clever writing. The dialogue felt grounded and real but also stylized at the appropriate moments, the plot was well-structured and clever, and I liked the little SNL-like commercial parodies interspersed throughout the main narrative. I'm usually one of those people that already has the ending figured out early on (and has to bite his tongue not to spoil it for fellow viewers), but this one was completely unpredictable. Check it out!

A decent horror comedy
BandSAboutMovies18 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Let's lead this off with the director's statement on the film: "Great horror films find ways to create physical manifestations of abstract fears and anxieties. Modern popularity culture imposes a certain pressure on younger people to create complex, performative identities, and to fearlessly face the consequences of the resulting fracturing of their self-image. We wanted to create a "monster" that manifested from those performative pressures, and one that is actually fed and brought to life by every character in the movie inadvertently. We hoped to depict the different types of personas people take on in social-media forums, and the impossible reconciliations they face. We hope you will find these circumstances tragic and sympathize with the victims who have this vapidity thrust upon them, rather than viewing the participants as themselves vapid. We do not wish the film to be a condemnation of millennials, so much as a condemnation of the way that they have been commoditized by Facebook, Google, and other Internet giants."

Bailey and Emma (Colby Stewart and Brandi Aguilar) are college roommates who work together to fuel Bailey's obsession with gaining fame via the St33ker app. Up until now, she's led everyone else on the site, but when another user of the site reveals that she is dying from cancer, she loses her popularity and even her place in the world.

However, the girls find their popularity increases when a killer in a spray painted white Donald Trump mask - hello, Nick Castle - begins stalking them. The cops are, at best, ineffective. And the deeper the girls go into danger, the less Bailey wants to escape it, as she's returning to the popularity she once had.

I really liked the constant sponsored messages for Toot Strudles and seeing each character's own channel become part of the film. While the budget is low, the ideas are big here and I had a blast watching it. I also love that they made a real site for Str33ker, with longer versions of the videos showed in the film.

Directed by Sophia Cacciola (the upcoming Blood of the Triblade) and Michael J. Epstein, this movie does a great job of jumping tone and even genre as the film goes on. It's always a struggle for horror comedy to determine what side of the equation that they will land upon, but Clickbair straddles that line quite well.

Creatively Humorous
britah-7928121 August 2020
I enjoyed the use of Tootstrudel advertisements to add a little comic relief to the plot line. The acting is slightly overdramatized but on par with what you'd expect from an amateur film. The film is laced with jokes that will keep you laughing while you're on the edge of your seat. Overall, this was well written and entertaining.

Not bad, just a tad short at under 90 mins
squodge25 May 2020
This is a horror satire film, which clocks in at under 90 mins. The pacing of the film is mostly on spec, but occasionally drags because the Toot Strudels adverts weren't always funny, but they are intelligently woven into each Str33ker's flashes.

This is a world where people vie for popularity over an app called Str33ker, which I guess is a parody of Twitter. And the popularity involves creating very short videos, which they call 'flashes' (or 'Vines' in the old days). Bailey and Emma are a duo - Bailey is the face, and Emma does the filming.

The satire mostly works, with only a few moments where I felt the humour fell flat. The film's budget must have been low because, well, the horror and gore moments are what you'd expect from a student film. However, as a horror satire it works absolutely fine.

The sound is a bit problematic at times... dialogue was sharp, but there were times when the sound was murky when I don't think it meant to be. Did I mention the film is a tad short? With the fairly fast pacing, the script could have added an extra scene or two - not to pad it out, but to extend the satire.

Last but not least, I feel the film title 'Clickabait' doesn't suit the film at all. The Str33kers don't seem to be using clickbait titles and, if anything, it's the Toot Strudel ads that hogs a fair bit of airtime. Nevertheless, I give the film a solid 7. Great performances, satire punches about its weight, and both lead actresses are excellent in their roles, especially Brandi Aguilar.

With a micro budget, the filmmakers successfully make an entertaining and endearing genre entry not easily pigeonholed.

Not horrible
hotguyattarget20 August 2019
It's not a horrible movie. The film quality is really good, I thought the acting was really good by the 2 lead actresses, Colby Stewart and Brandi Aguilar. They are definitely 2 stars in the making, their on-screen chemistry was really good, and they're both cute. I was not a fan of fake commercials in the movie, I didn't get them? It throws off the plot of the movie and I got lost. So a lot of times the plot gets confusing. And while I will not give away any spoilers, the ending was a bit disappointing too. Like there needed to be more to give closure....so the ending was a bit of let down. All in all, the movie kept my attention, but there were some missing plot holes that I wanted to know the answer to...that we never really get to know the answers to. It's a cute movie though. It's entertaining. Funny at times. I think the 2 young lead actresses make the movie worth watching with their performances, with the otherwise just "okay" script and plot holes. I give it a 6 out of 10 for the reasons I said. It's a good movie to pass the time.

Hilarious Searing Satire
skipshea-801-84875618 June 2019
Clickbait is a searing satire of social media narcissism and the lengths people will go to promote their brand. Terrific horror elements mixed in with the comedy make it a fun ride for horror fans. But the true horror is that this may not be that far from the true world we live in today.

Really enjoyed this film. I must say that I don't normally leave reviews, but I really appreciated this film. The acting was refreshing and found myself genuinely cracking up at certain moments, but I must highlight the writing in this film. Put simply, it's fantastic. It's a must watch! Thanks!

pretty entertaining
AngryMan8823 June 2019
I thought the movie was entertaining enough. its a satire movie but also with hidden messages. I watched the movie cause I watch Brandi (the actress who plays Emma) sing songs on the app Bigo all the time, and shes been in a lot of movies so it was cool seeing this one. I thought her and the girl who played Bailey were really good, they both were believable and I liked their characters. they were likable. giving it a 7 cause i felt the movie was a bit short, and there were some things I didn't quite understand but it still kept my attention.

What A Wild Ride
pensive_sojourner3 April 2019
This film needs to be added to the bucket list of all indy enthusiasts. The acting is top-notch and the writing subperb. There is even some slightly veiled political commentary.

Funny and searing social satire
nodiro4 April 2019
Clickbait is a very clever look at fame culture, but in a different light than most similar movies. It's not an indictment of the people caught up in it, but rather the society that forces them to participate in order to be successful. I saw a Q&A where the directors talked about how the whole movie is intended to get the viewer to reflect on their own choices about how they consume on the internet. That's an important message. And Toot Strudels are funny as hell!

My short thoughts on Clickbait
mikesteinheiser18 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was able to catch the screening of Clickbait at the Buffalo Dreams Film Fest last year and it was one of my favorite film fest screenings of 2018. Fun from start to finish, very sharply written, well acted and shot, and a ton of laugh out loud moments, really anxious for a second viewing and hoping for a dvd/blu ray release later this year. I can never hear the word strudel again without thinking about Toot strudels and smiling.

A thought provoking horror comedy
catiaskoehler24 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Horror comedy is not a genre I delve into very deeply, but Clickbait has given me a reason to start. Unlike some of the more mainstream films in this genre, Clickbait offers a unique and entertaining storyline with a deep message about millennial culture and its dangerous obsession with fame.

Not to mention Epstein and Cacciola have a knack for capturing artistic details that put their films in a whole other category.

Highly Recommend - The Kind of Commentary We Need Today... !
lisajepstein1 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Clickbait was everything an Indie film should be - unique, poignant, funny and with a thought-provoking message. Everyone should watch and be uncomfortable with the (true) message being delivered about social media and narcissism - but why not enjoy the message with laughter along the way! Highly recommend watching.

Warning: Spoilers
Regarding some of the bad reviews on here who rated this movie a 1. did we watch the same movie? I thought it was pretty good. You're being too harsh and picky. I enjoy offbeat humor and unique movies such as this one. I'm not too much into the movies out today, a lot of them are just remakes or bad romantic comedy movies, or comic book movies that just make me go "eh". I enjoyed this movie, def a great movie for any movie geek to watch, will be adding it to my collection. I loved the performances of all the actors, I thought they were great. The two young lead actresses, Colby Stewart and Brandi Aguilar, did incredible, they have great onscreen presence and you never get bored of watching them. It doesn't surprise me both Colby and Brandi won awards for their performances in this movie. I actually had the pleasure of watching Brandi Aguilar in another movie she was in as a teenage girl, 2006's Greed, an odd, yet underrated movie. Glad to see she is still in the movies as an adult. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is into strange 80's movies.

I love this film. It is independent and unique. The performances are campy and fun. But it is hardly fluff. The film delves into examining internet celebrity phenomena in an innovative and awesome way. I highly recommend!

I love horror and I really enjoy comedy, and Clickbait totally combined the two. It's not the typical slasher horror movie, but it does a really good job of keeping you entertained. I liked the stars and Brandi Aguilar was my favorite. Totally recommend this one!!

Dark Comedy Done Right!
WSKlass197516 July 2019
Dark comedies hit home for me. So many are done with just too much drama and the humor is lost. This film is not only done right, it is done with creative emphasis that surprises you at the most random points. Without spoiling the effects of this great film, Toot Strudel is surely going to be branded in the back of your brain. I absolutely loved how the creators and cast captured the elements of humor with real problems of social media. This is a film that I hope will become some kind of cult classic.

Funny, clever horror satire
rockrollcola24 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really funny clever satire of popularity culture, and really, it's not what you think it will be at all. I don't want to spoil anything, but the ending especially is a surprise, and it's really brutal and strange. My only complaint was it could have been more horror to supplement the comedy, but it was still quite good.

Watching Clickbait opens your screen to a cavalcade of amusing characters
privateer9225 June 2019
A bemusing and satirical take on suspense and horror in the age of fleeting fame for internet influencers, Clickbait delivers a just right to the bite of Toot Strudel comfort food with theme and character archetypes that are lucid and accessible, yet with with a variety of flavors for the viewer to choose from, starring Colby Stewart, Brandi Aguilar, and Seth Chatfield. Directed with less trauma inducing tropes than Troma by Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein, Clickbait is light and easily filling treat for the genre.
