Exclusive: Brooklyn-based filmmaker Ged Dickersin (Coda) is launching True Indy, a production company intent on making films that can and should be made independently, with filmmakers telling acutely relevant stories for the world market.
True Indy sees the opportunity to attract financing for films that can be made in the $1 million-$5 million range, reducing the financial risk to investors and increasing the chances for a return on the investment. The company is introducing its slate of original U.S.-born indies at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, as well as looking to partner with filmmakers from around the world in international co-productions.
“Independent filmmaking has developed so much, with budgets that exceed what the new world market can return, making it difficult for private equity to support the independents,” Dickersin said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the strikes, the cost of making a film has inflated drastically,...

“Home Improvement” actor Zachery Ty Bryan has pleaded guilty to felony assault but has cut a deal to avoid jail time.
“He believes this is the manner he could best resolve this to avoid further trauma to his family,” the actor’s attorney John Kolego told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Bryan, who played the eldest son in the Tim Allen sitcom “Home Improvement,” was arrested in July in Eugene, Oregon. He was charged with felony assault in violation of the Abuse Prevention Act because the victim had already filed a restraining order against him for a previous incident of domestic violence.
Instead of spending 19 to 20 months in Oregon Department of Corrections, Bryan will given 36 months of supervised probation. He must also serve seven days in jail.
If he violates the terms of the agreement, which include no contact with the victim and undergoing alcohol and substance abuse treatment, the deal will...

“It’s just my f*** up, right?” the former bodybuilder bluntly said of his affair with housekeeper Mildred Baena, which ended his marriage to Maria Shriver in 2011.
The actor added: “We always made it very clear that the kids should not suffer because of that. And she (Maria) has her things, her relationship, I have mine, but we always communicate about the kids,...

Ahed’s Knee, Nadav Lapid’s latest feature, takes its title from the teenage Palestinan activist who became a media sensation (and was then imprisoned) for squaring off against Israeli soldiers in 2017. Ahed’s Knee, Nadav Lapid’s latest feature, takes its title from the teenage Palestinan activist who became a media sensation (and was then imprisoned) for squaring off against Israeli soldiers in 2017. Heralded for his Gold Bear-winning Synonyms and The Kindergarten Teacher, a tw0-hander that produced a Netflix-distributed American remake, Lapid’s work remains consistently critical of, and in opposition to, the oppressive Israeli government. Even so, he remains, in J. Hoberman’s eyes, “the most internationally acclaimed Israeli filmmaker in recent memory…and perhaps ever.” While promoting The Kindergarten Teacher in 2018, Lapid was invited by Israel’s Ministry of Culture to participate in a […]

This review of “Ahed’s Knee” was first published on July 7, 2021, after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
After winning the Golden Bear at Berlin for his last film, 2019’s “Synonyms,” Israeli film maker Nadav Lapid returns to top-flight festival competition with prickly intensity in “Ahed’s Knee.”
There’s a Cannes connection which could stand him in good stead: His film “The Kindergarten Teacher” debuted in Critics’ Week here on the Croisette in 2014 and was remade by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who now sits on this year’s Cannes jury. She might look upon it favorably, as will festival audiences and certain art-house cinemas, though it’s unlikely a remake will be in anybody’s mind.
“Ahed’s Knee” begins with an audition session in which young women show their knees through ripped jeans and go through various stages of emotion for a camera and an unmoved casting director. We learn that they...

Cynical takes on life as an Israeli citizen have been a staple of Nadav Lapid’s filmography long before a Ptsd-riddled Tom Mercier tried to abjure his motherland to embrace another in Synonyms (2019). Two years after that fulminating film nabbed a Golden Bear in Berlin comes Ahed’s Knee, a vitriolic tirade on the country’s creeping “loyalty” laws that’s possibly Lapid’s most desperate and lacerating to date. The film follows a Tel Aviv director in his forties who travels to a remote village in Israel’s Arava region for a screening of his latest. The man is Y (Avshalom Pollack) and on arrival he’s greeted by a young officer for the Ministry of Culture, Yahalom (Nur Fibak), who’s there to make sure the Q&a will only touch upon a list of “sanctioned” topics. All of this happened to Lapid too, who traveled to the...

When Maggie Gyllenhaal picked up the phone to talk her about her Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay for the writer/director’s debut film, The Lost Daughter. She wasn’t going to celebrated at first, but soon gave in.
“I drank a lot of champagne already today!”
The film came together because the producing partners Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (also producers with Gyllenhaal on The Kindergarten Teacher), the idea arose that Gyllenhaal herself should direct a project. Securing the rights to Elena Ferrante’s novel, The Lost Daughter. The film stars Olivia Coleman and Jessie Buckley, both who have been nominated in the best and best supporting actress categories this year.
As a 2022 nominee, she seemed more excited for her film’s stars.

Filmmaking is quite literally in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s genes. Her mother is Oscar-winning screenwriter Naomi Foner (“Running on Empty”) who also directed the 2013 drama “Very Good Girls.” And her father Stephen Gyllenhaal has directed such films as 1992 “Waterland,” which featured his daughter, and 1993 “A Dangerous Woman.” But it took time for the Oscar-nominated actress (“Crazy Heart’) to follow in her parents’ footsteps.
“I think that now I have directed, I can see in a way I always was a director,” she noted in a recent American Cinematheque Zoom conversation with Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro (“The Shape of Water”). She added, though, it was so deep into her psyche that “it was even a secret for me.” She recently picked up Gotham Independent Film honors for writing and directing her first film, Netflix’s “The Lost Daughter,” starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris and her husband Peter Sarsgaard.

A few years back, when Maggie Gyllenhaal was making The Kindergarten Teacher with Pie Films’ producing partners Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren, the idea arose that Gyllenhaal herself should direct a project. Securing the rights to Elena Ferrante’s novel, The Lost Daughter, Gyllenhaal re-teamed with Pie Films, crafted her first feature script and cast Olivia Colman as Leda, a middle-aged woman whose past haunts her when she meets a young woman on vacation. Amid a Covid-driven location switch to Greece and quarantine with her film-family, Gyllenhaal crafted a feature filled with eviscerating but necessary truths about motherhood and all its complexity.
Deadline: How did you and Talia and Osnat start talking about you directing on a project together?

The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, is “a searing portrait of parenthood, about womanhood, but about so much more than that,” says producing partner Endeavor Content’s Negeen Yazdi, senior vice president of film development and production.
Searing is right. The film, adapted by Gyllenhaal from Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, follows the middle-aged Leda (Olivia Colman) as her solo vacation takes a turn following an encounter with Nina (Dakota Johnson), a young mother whose struggles remind Leda of her own traumatic experience of motherhood. Startling honest and gratifyingly raw, the depiction via flashback of the younger Leda (Jessie Buckley)’s experience raising her daughters explores issues rarely seen on screen, much less discussed.
“It’s so uncompromising and bold in terms of what it’s saying,” Yazdi says. “And I remember Maggie has always said, it really hit her when she read Elena Ferrante...

The film depicts a true story and follows Michael Keaton as a Washington D.C. lawyer who is tasked with the managing of compensation for the families of victims of the September 11th attacks — paired with A-list co-stars Stanley Tucci and Amy Ryan, the film attempts to deliver a compelling legal drama while also paying respect to the victims and families affected by the attacks. On a Labor Day weekend when “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” exploded to a record $90 million initial four- day gross, Disney also expanded Premium VOD platforms for its $100 million-plus box office “Jungle Cruise” ($29.99). As with other PVOD titles, it’s making a strong debut on multiple charts after an initial Disney+ home exclusive.
“Jungle Cruise” leads at Vudu, which favors higher-priced titles with its revenue tally. Among transactional charts, iTunes has it as #3, with GooglePlay placing it at #5. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$5.99) repeats at #1 at both iTunes and Google, and at #5 is the highest non-pvod films at Vudu. All of this reinforces that Disney can maximize returns from multiple outlets even as films still do well in theaters.
“Don’t Breathe 2” (Sony/$19.99), a surprise PVOD release after three weeks in theaters, is #2 at Vudu, #3 at iTunes, and #5 at GooglePlay. The film fell a modest 18 percent in...

With “The Lost Daughter,” director Maggie Gyllenhaal wears melancholy like a second skin. One of her generation’s most underrated actors, she moves through her films with a flicker of otherworldly woe; an organic ability that has routinely been informing the highlights of her filmography to date, from the erotically manic “Secretary” to the gritty “Sherrybaby,” and more recently, the wistful thriller, “The Kindergarten Teacher.” In other words, Gyllenhaal has always possessed an auteurial sway over the films she was in, putting on them her signature ethereal stamp.

If you thought watching Godzilla and King Kong fight for global super-monster supremacy was epic, wait until you watch the two movies in Sara Colangelo’s “Worth” duke it out. On the one hand, this real-life 9/11 drama is a triumph of the human spirit, and on the other, it’s a triumph for corporations convincing the families of 9/11 victims to waive their right to legal recourse in a desperate attempt to weasel their way out of getting sued.
“Worth” tells the story of lawyer Kenneth Feinberg, played with a gravely, drawling austerity by Michael Keaton. In the college course he teaches, Feinberg invites his students to ponder the question, “What is life worth?” — but not in the usual philosophical sense. He’s asking his class to engage in a difficult legal conundrum that comes up all too often: in the case of wrongful death, how does a lawyer determine how...

Who Is Dillon Jordan? Producer Arrested for Prostitution Ring Has Litigious Past, Was Jailed in Cuba
Mark Ebner woke up on Friday and was startled to see news about Dillon Jordan, a 49-year-old movie producer who was arrested on charges that he had used his movie company as a front for a wide-ranging prostitution ring.
“It was like Christmas in July,” Ebner told Variety. “They finally got this guy.”
Ebner is a journalist who has written extensively about the underbelly of the entertainment industry on his website, HollywoodInterrupted.com. In 2009, he published a book called “Six Degrees of Paris Hilton,” and it originally had a chapter that was all about Jordan and his alleged work as a pimp. Ebner had gotten access to Jordan’s hard drive, which he said included chat logs that showed Jordan was involved in prostitution.
But Ebner said his publisher, Simon & Schuster, did not want to include the chapter. So Ebner decided to publish it on his website as a way to promote the book.

Dillion Jordan, the producer best known for the film “Skin” and for executive producing the Maggie Gyllenhaal indie drama “the Kindergarten Teacher, was arrested on charges that he secretly ran a prostitution ring and used his production company as a cover.
Jordan, who was arrested in San Bernardino County, California, will face the charges in the Southern District court of New York. The Grand Jury indictment, which was actually filed in June but unsealed Thursday, lays out 4 counts: Conspiracy to violate the Mann Act; enticement; use of interstate commerce to promote unlawful activity; and money laundering.
Federal prosecutors say Jordan, 49, headed up the prostitution ring beginning in 2010, three years before he founded PaperChase Films. A California film producer was arrested on Thursday on charges that he used his production company, PaperChase Films, as a front for an international prostitution ring.
Dillon Jordan, who produced “Skin” and “The Kindergarten Teacher,” was indicted last month on prostitution and money laundering charges. The indictment was unsealed on Thursday.
The charges allege that Jordan ran the operation from 2010 at least through May 2017, arranging travel for women to meet clients for sex around the country. He also allegedly used accounts in the names of the production company and an event planning business to collect payments and pay expenses for the prostitution business. The payments were sometimes described as “modeling fees,” “appearance fees,” “consulting fees” and “house party fees.”
Jordan, 49, is based in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and also goes by Daniel Jordan, Daniel Maurice Hatton, and Daniel Bohler, according to the indictment. He was arrested in San Bernardino County and...

Film producer Dillon Jordan was arrested today by federal agents and charged with running what was described as “an extensive and far-reaching” prostitution ring.
Arrested in San Bernadino County, Jordan was charged with enticement, use of interstate commerce to promote unlawful activity, and money laundering.
Jordan, the backer of the 2018 Maggie Gyllenhaal drama The Kindergarten Teacher (which won a directing award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival), allegedly ran the ring with the help of a British madam. His activities spanned 2010 to 2017, according to an indictment filed in the Southern District of New York.
He founded PaperChase Films in 2013. His films include 2019’s The Kid with Ethan Hawke.
The 49-year-old Jordan allegedly used his movie production company and a California-based event-planning firm to launder the money from the prostitution activities, the court papers allege.
“As alleged, for years, Dillon Jordan operated an extensive and far-reaching prostitution business, using a purported event...

He saw his second feature (The Kindergarten Teacher) play at the Critics Week (and be adapted into a U.S remake shortly after) certainly jury member Maggie Gyllenhaal might have been the most in-the-know about Nadav Lapid‘s filmography to date. After recently winning the Golden Bear for Synonymes (there is an inside joke to be found) he was ready for the big stage with his fourth film — Ahed’s Knee which is just as politicized as his three other features. An ode to his creative collaborator/mother, Day 2 would be a soul-crushing drama featuring the unlikeable big deal character of Y played by Avshalom Pollak who befriends (or so we think) Yahalom (Nur Fibak) — despite her lack of knowledge of what Battleship Potemkin might be, this film about a filmmaker is served ice cold.…...
