Plays with subtle emotion
supto-4907829 April 2020
It's not a common coming of age movie we all know about. It's a tale of everything such affection, love and bonding. I give director full marks for his vision but i think direction might be better in places but we can ignore that little flaws. Netflix once again provides a winner.

The boy who plays raju i can relate to him. He has a bright future. Mrs D'Souza is fantastic in this movie. Shawn also good. But i was looking forward to the relations between princess and raju. Some plots are half baked but i can overlook these.

Thank you Netflix for this beautiful heartwarming movie to go through this tough lockdown days. Thank you Augustine.

Sweet story
santoshambekar1930 April 2020
After some time, I feel relaxed watching a satisfying story, a story of a boy trying to clear a drawing subject of his engineering, how stumbles upon a Temporary job of a lift boy! The lift boy is about hope, efforts and success! A very sweet and simple story which with its nicely selected character roles makes it memorable!

Sweet, Heart Warming
topmoviesblogs1 May 2020
Netflix new offering "The Lift Boy" is a sweet story about a boy who struggle to pass engineering exam because one paper. How his employer helps him and also teaches him few important lesson of life.

Direction

This slice of life movie on Netflix is sweet and heart warming. Director Jonathan Augustin shows you Mumbai and its struggle from the lens which has been seen earlier but it's refreshing. This small movie does not have too much of drama but it has soul. Director has managed to show what he wants to say.

Performance & Story

Moin Khan as Raju has to work as a lift man to cover up his father Krishna (Saagar Kale) to make sure his father job. Krishna who suffered a heart attack & his wife has been working hard to make sure their son Raju one day becomes an engineer. Raju's struggle initial hesitation and shame makes him hate the job but gradually Raju starts enjoying the job because of Princess (a girl who is being forced to be an actress by her mother). But the story is between Raju & Mrs. Maureen D'souza (Nyla Massod). The relationship between them is pure and heart warming. Both actors are really good and plays their character very well. Few character are caricature of typical mother, typical neighbor and typical friend but main two character manage to hold you.

Music & Background score

This movie is weak in background score. Though a full fledged song was not required but Director should have worked Background music.

Overall

Decent, slice of life movie to watch, it is not boring but does not promises to give you mind blowing story.

Actors in the movie did a neat job. Movie goes at a slow pace but you never feel bored. You can watch this movie easily when you don't have anything great on your list.

Masterpiece

I Never wrote a review before but this movie compelled me to write one. The story itself is a sheer brilliance and the direction and portrayal of each character is so unique yet so relatable. Each actor completely justifies its role. Every second of this movie is breathtaking and will inspire you in a simple and subtle way. An Oscar worth cinema. Watch it and fell in love with simplicity with which it portrays.

Basic but beautiful
muamba_eats_toast18 May 2020
The film has an extremely basic principle yet works perfectly. Gets the emotions spot on and the relationships are done wonderfully. The film was probably 20-30mins longer than needed given how basic the basis of the film was but good enough not to drag to badly.

Simple
vikrammankikar1 May 2020
A simple tale. A simple cast.

This isn't going to do much for your cinematic experience if you watch this hoping for deep meanings, a mature cast and innovative camera work. What this movie gives you is an easy everyday look see into its very basic characters. It works on a very primal level. It isn't going to win Oscars, it isn't going to be something you tell your friends about but on a quiet Sunday afternoon, it will mean something to you - accompany this with a nice cup of tea.

Everyone has a door of wisdom. Only when they meet the right spiritual teacher can they really open.
chrishuang-6305526 November 2019
People in the Huaxia, life is like an elevator going up and down, and only with all their efforts to help others can they reverse their lives. In addition to the deep and unfavorable emotion of the protagonist's family, another important plot line in the film is a strange relationship between the owner's painter and the elevator boy. Sometimes, although parents send their children to High expectations, but not necessarily the ability to teach their children, in the film to help the protagonist elevator boy, to learn on the right track, is this well-intentioned painter of the owner of the building, in the film treats the elevator boy, sometimes harsh, sometimes warm and kind For better or worse, the old lady's implication for the life education of young elevator boys lies behind her. Motivational films full of positive energy, but different from the past big productions and big scenes, people look at the blood-filled style, follow a warm little fresh line, people laugh with tears!

Could be a Oscar level movie

A very decent movie with bad actors (except the lady who played Mrs. D'Souza) and direction. The story was good but the budget problems can easily be noticed

Well made movie but a little more tight writing would have made it phenomenal!
I loved the characterisations of every character in the movie and all the actors have performed seamlessly helping viewers easily understand the plight of each character. Excellent direction and screenplay, well researched cinematography, audio mixing, lighting in the apartment hall areas, at Raju's neighbourhood - all of these add to the overall quality of the movie and makes it more approachable to the audience.

I felt there could have been a little tight writing at certain scenes as few scenes kept hitting the cliche notes very hard. Definitely a movie worth your time.

A Christian missionary movie
sudipregmi2 July 2020
Movie is watchable. It is however a movie made with sole motive to paint a good picture of christian. Not at all a bad thing to invest and promote one's own religion but missionary works has mostly played dirty role in India. Also same missionaries have been investing heavily in demonizing our most peaceful, nature friendly and oldest religion. So this movie as a part of same missionaries fighting for same mission I cannot endorse it.

Good acting but many cliché
rahulrai00817 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a coming of age stiry about a boy Raju. He replaces his father as liftman in a building. The owner of building Mrs Dsouzza helps him to clear his engineering exam. Then before dying she leaves her everything in Raju's name.

The story is good and the movie is slow paced. The actors are refreshingly adapted to their roles and have acted really well. The direction is also good and brings out the emotions in the movie in an apt manner. You are never bored by the movie at any time.

Now comes not so good stuff about the movie. The movie portrays Raju conversing flawlessly in English with everyone. It is presumed that since he has gone to english medium school and is enrolled in engineering, hence he can converse without any difficulty, with persons of affluent class, matching them even in tone snd tenor. A girl who wants to live for a cause. Sje doesn't want money and fame. Her mother is forcing her to be a movie star. Such a poor girl (pun intended). She befriends the liftboy and shares her personal life with him just like that. An ever so selfless christian lady, who is full of wisdom about life is now a cliche character in indian cinema. She is a painter but she can teach Raju engineering drawing. She accomplishes that by buying the subject's book and reading them herself. The comes the boggest cliche of this plot, she dies the same day as that of Raju's exam and he couldn't even tell her of how well his exam went. And finally he finds out that the lady left all her belongings for him.

This movie is neither going to amaze you, Nor it is going to leave you in tears. It is a sunday lazy afternoon sort of movie. Good for time pass and appreciate the acting skills of the chatacters in the movie.

A life lesson. Very touched
rohit_vit20204 July 2020
This is more like a lunchbox movie. It is about life. It shows different sets of persons with different mind sets in a metro city. It shows how lonely you can be even in a metro city like mumbai, and it teaches what is Important in life. There are few strikingly hearted scenes where the boy says he does not have a job satisfaction, and his father explains there are people who are struggling to get a job for hunger, and we are talking about job satisfication? The job you do is important though you may not like it, bcoz it is your job and the job gives you food, and you are able to take care of your family bcoz of that.

It shows the funny side of life as well, where the boy from poor family do not give respect to a maid servant but smiles and talks to rich young girl in the film. The irony is that the same rich girl despite being rich shows no hesitation in talking to the poor boy.

The film mainly revolves around the father's struggle with his low income boring job and he does it based on his sheer wit to make his son an engineer.

This movie is a life lesson to all.

Spare your sanity.
dhruvdevc20 May 2020
A horribly shot film which has the potential to be much more under a different mind. First off, the colour grading throughout the film is diabolical. The focus is choppy and the editing is weak to say the least. Comes off as an extremely low budget film and feels like something kids would make on an iPad. The eyes struggle to keep with the horrible colour corrections and the story arc is stale and dry. I'll spare the acting to your own opinion but it is nothing but the lowly level of theatre amateur.
