Great subject that deserves a better movie
luthien-2463931 January 2021
As a (classical) music lover and agreeing with the filmmaker that Antonia Brico more than deserves to be put in the spotlight, I had high expectations of this movie. Maybe they were set too high: I have mixed feelings after seeing it.

As a movie, I feel that it kept meandering around, never finding a steady pace. I found myself wondering multiple times about sudden jumps in the story that I felt deserved more attention. It was as if the movie wants to cover as much ground as possible at the cost of the flow - even where it doesn't really contribute to the story. Some characters felt like caricatures, which made this movie feel a bit politically motivated. Despite my sympathy for the cause I think that it shouldn't dominate.

Something similar goes for the role of the music in the movie: that, too, felt rather arbitrarily chosen - apart from that brief moment where "Rhapsody in Blue" is mentioned as "new music" (though it was already a few years old by then). In this movie the music itself could have played a much more profound role, but it did so only on a few fleeting moments, as when an angry and upset Antonia hammered Stravinsky on her ramshackle piano with the neighbours yelling "Silence!!" through the walls. I don't know what Ms. Brico's favourite repertoire was, but I can't help thinking what a marvellous role a piece like the Sacre du Printemps, or maybe Alban Berg's "To the memory of an Angel" could have played.

More attention on women in History
rahngerhard7 March 2019
This is a very good movie to shine more light in women in history, from whom you have never heard before. Excellent acting even in smaller parts. Although the film is a bit long, you are eager to know how the story ends. I enjoyed the music, the picture quality and the acting.

The conquest of a dream - Inspirational, thought-provoking and entertaining story
stylianosm28 July 2019
Very intersting movie - partly true story - about one woman who set a professional life goal and conquered it despite all obstacles. Very good quality, plot and flow. Very good casting and acting. The unexpected plot twists by some main characters is an extra plus. Good depiction of an era. Inspirational, gives food for thought, reflection and discussion. Highly recommended for all, not just for girls/women.

beautiful
Kirpianuscus2 March 2020
It is not fair or easy to say why it is a beautiful film. Sure, the rights of women, a self struggle, the noble dream, sad love story, real case are good pieces but not the most important. Something else give force and energy and beauty to this film. Maybe, the acting or the script or the cinematography or the aura of realised dream. It is not important. Significant remains the feeling seeing it.

Perfect image of a time
jclangenberg4 November 2018
Christanne de Bruijn impersonated Antonia Brico in a perfect way. This movie is powerfull and emotional and gives a complete image of this time (1926-1929) and position of women. A film about perseverance and romance.

So touching...
sarper-saridal15 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Loved the end. Especially when it says a magazine don't have a women conductor in the top 50 list. I did not get upset about it. The point was not about to be in the top of somewhere. There may be hundreds of conductors who may deserve to be in that list maybe some are better. The point is to be good at what you are doing and leaving behind good vibrations behind to follow your path to go forward. That is a better exceptional success level...

very meaningful true story
vincent_lin5 March 2019
Aside from the current 6.9 rating, I hope it gets much higher rating, the story itself is already amazing, there is depth in this story, bring the viewer's view of how a women become an outstanding musician conductor and characteristic itself is very reasoned. yeah, maybe there might be some subtle scene there can be improved, but i couldn't find any, i just find that the actor, the story, the lightning and the dramatic moment is well composed and serves its purpose. After finished watching it, it strengthen my point of views, everything serve a purpose but, there must be a beneficial meaning behind it which lead us to eternal success, i think most of us tends to give up because reality make us live in fear, but it is because life is about suffering so why not try to enjoy it and live in a meaningful ways of live.😂

Not quite a matured enough movie
AntiFakeReviews8 May 2021
There are so many awkward moments almost every scene. The acting among characters sometimes also feel awkward and even embarrased, they seem to unwillingly uncontrolably freeze at times. The dialog also feel contrived and even quite rigid to go on and go along. There are no chemistry between or among the actors who involve in this movie, even they have been assigned to be family members, friends or more so, lovers.

This is a very uncomfortable movie to watch. It's about a female trying to become a orchestra symphony conductor. An orphan adopted by a kind adopting father but absolutely spineless to a heartless cold old bitchy wife. She struggles so hard to reach her dream. A great story, if the screenplay, the directing and those who cast to play the roles. But it simply failed miserably and came up shosrt. All I got from this movie is a feeling of awkwardness and impatience. A quite raw patchwork of directing and acting but matching the immature screenplay.

Mediocre, at best.
juanpgarmo13 November 2021
You can tell a hundred times that the story told in this movie is interesting and heart-warming. It doesn't matter, as at this point, the thing that really makes a movie shine is the way of how the story is illustrated, as there are many movies out there with an interesting story to tell but a really poor execution. And you can be absolutely sure that these is one of them.

The direction is incredibly undynamic, even for it's 140 minute lenght that just makes you lose the interest on the film more and more as it keeps going. The shots are poor, scriptwriting is so-so and also acting as well, and the worst part is the timing. There are no points in the movie for the stoyry to de-accelerate the pace and develop itself well; for example, there is one scene that the protagonist has a shocking revelation and breaks emotionally, and literally 30 seconds later she's showing how good she is in the piano without even taking a single second to digest what she had just heard a minute ago. And that goes for the rest of the movie.

I'm not gonna talk about the romance. It should be obvious for everyone with two brain cells that it's pretty awful, with a bad development and an incredible lack of chemistry. It's just a tasteless decoration for an attempt of heart-moving story that try harder and harder to raise awareness with an important feminist message for which this bland attempt of movie is not up to par.

The film lasts more than two hours, but it felt eternal as it kept going far away from the 60 minutes, as Antonia has reached her definitive goal and keeps going for more, or more specifically, for nothing. Maybe to praise a character that is too soft and flat to create empathy with the audience or even to impose a bit between the other ones for showing and giving us a little taste of a director's temperament (Please keep your comparisons with Whiplash. It's not worth it.) It's isn't a terrible movie, but it's far, far away from being good, and it couldn't be close to being game-changing even in a hundred million light years

Anyway, everything said about this movie is just much ado about nothing.

3/10 it's pretty fair.

To attain this level of superficiality takes some kind of talent
reginadonk3 November 2019
So, what we have here is a little-known true story of a young woman of Dutch extraction who is brought up in New York in the early 20th century and who develops an ambition to one day conduct an orchestra. Her name ends up being Antonia Brico (Don't ask) - ever heard of her? No, neither have I. The reason for this, as the film attempts to convey, is that then, as now, the role of a conductor is seen as exclusively a male prerogative. Naturally, this is an ongoing issue, but did Brico's minor attempts at breaking this closed shop warrant a full-blown movie, or has the story been severely exaggerated. I could not help but suspecting that it has. Meanwhile, what of the film itself (?) Well, it does look good, probably too good a lot of the time, in the way that classy Christmas adverts look good. There is also much close focusing on the main characters faces, some of whom are pleasant to look at. However, the camera rarely focuses on the eyes, where, shock-horror, depth of character might lurk. (Lets not confuse our audience, now). There is a mix of fixed camera shots, crane shots, and even hand-held camera shots, and you notice them because, firstly, they are so telegraphed, and moreover because the film is so slow paced and un-engaging that one begins to look for any point of attachment to prevent oneself from gently drifting into unconsciousness. A film such as this has to be carried by the central performance, and Christanne de Bruin, while being able to elicit sentiment from us, (In a way a lovable puppy might) is so out of her depth (Through her lack of any dramatic essence) that I found myself wincing for her rather than at her. The script is truly appalling, and along with the screenplay, reduces every single other character to even less than a cardboard cut out version of a real person. To attain this level of superficiality takes some kind of talent, and they nail it here. If you want to see a masterclass in how to spoon-feed your audience to a point where they accept being pandered to like they are encountering life depicted on screen for the very first time, then check out this supreme dud of a movie. Does it contain any redeeming features? Well, the movie briefly comes to life when our heroine travels to Amsterdam to uncover her true roots. This involves at one point entering a cloister, and a slither of tension is invoked by the possible breaking of the strict rules of silence within the Trappist order. (Yes, that really is a dramatic high-point in this arid tale) A nun communicates by scribbling on a chalk board, but she does so in such a frantic manner that the scene becomes Pythonesque in its absurdity. I was the only person giggling at this amongst an audience who were still taking this risible nonsense movie seriously after a good hour. I guess they were too busy admiring the endless shots of shiny floored corridors, period vehicles, and sculptured haircuts, to notice how truly wretchedly woeful this film was.

1920's La La Land vibes
yaezin31 July 2021
I don't usually write reviews, but this movie deserves it. Besides the great acting, image, music and inspirational main story, this movie shook me to the Core. The fact that, by the end of the movie, you end up understanding every single action and word between the main characters, even if you don't agree with them. Loving someone but loving yourself as much, that's what's all about. Empathy at it finest.

This movie was what I needed without even knowing it. This movie is what you need, go watch it.

Inspirational movie
mosquitocyn2 July 2023
Highly recommend to watch. Didn't know what the movie is about as it popped up on my screen and after watching for 10 mins, I knew I like it. Paused and checked what it was about. This is a long movie (more than 2 hours) but there was never a dull moment. I could identify the struggles, hardship and injustices our female lead character had to go through and the determination and friendships she had to achieve her goals. It's quite an inspiring movie for females and a good depiction and cinematography for the era. There's a bit of romance thrown in but nothing too distracting from the main theme. I enjoyed the movie and recommend watching it.

great story but the acting, story line and dialogues are beyond bad
ana_jagacic20 April 2019
I was excited to see this movie, expecting it to be powerful and emotional but pointless scenes - her wandering bare into a green pond, even the love story that's probably implemented go display more drama and her dedication to go above and beyond for her dream - have ruined this movie. To be fair, not only the inconclusive story line, but also the bad acting of the main characters have set the ground for failure. I mean her conducting looks like she hasn't prepared enough for her role, it's bland and with no emotion that comes with this art form. The entire movie feels rushed, not putting enough emphasis on what is the center story. Watch this right after The Green Book and you'll see what i mean. Might not be the best to put this critic together, but I really don't understand where the 7.2 imdb rating is coming from. My friend who watched the movie with me was equally unimpressed.

Inaccurate, sappy, lame...
nartancolorado13 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
ITS A MUSIC MOVIE NOT A ROMANCE! Also the actors have no idea what the hell they are doing. The original story is interesting in itself but the way the movie script is written it's almost as if they tought a monkey the original story and asked it to repeat it. I wouldn't make my ex watch it, it was that bad. Also, Chinese fast food in 1926? Why? Have you ever picked up a history book in your life? Or rather, have you ever touched a book? Why would the MC hide in the boy's bathroom to pretend to be a director and not in the women's bathroom? Because you idiots just HAD to include a romance and you couldn't come up with another way to make Antonia and Frank meet. Watching the actors is depressing. I was forced to watch it in class and will never watch it again. Just sad.

Inadequate
healycolin6 December 2019
This movie suffers from the shortcoming all such movies suffer from: no actor can 'act' a conductor. you can either conduct or you can't. If you want to make a biographical movie about a conductor, first find a conductor who can act. Failing that, a conductor who can't act is better than this offering. Her verbal interactions with the orchestra were also totally unrealistic - any conductor who spoke to an orchestra like that would get zero co-operation. Not her fault - lousy script. The acting was fine. There are many fine things in this movie - it's just that the musical stuff is embarrassing to anyone who knows anything about music.
