AnalysisFrom north Indian characters celebrating Holi to directors adding Holi festivities in songs for the visual appeal, Tamil film songs have included the festival of colours over the last few decades, writes the author.Rajinikanth in a still from Pa Ranjith's KaalaThe iconic ‘Rang barse bheege chunarwali rang barse’ song from the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Silsila is usually on top of any playlist during Holi celebrations. Then there’s the ‘Holi ke din’ song from Sholay, which also rings loud on “Holi-Day”. And one cannot forget Gabbar Singh’s legendary “Holi kab hai?” line from the same film. Holi has been an integral part of Bollywood pop culture and vice versa. After a couple of years of muted celebrations due to Covid-19, Holi is back with verve and vengeance this year. In the south of India though, Holi is not a big festival. It is not a holiday even.

Film CommentaryWhen you read these old stories, it becomes apparent why filmmakers are tempted to reinterpret myths through the grey, amoral landscape of the gangster film.Sowmya RajendranThe title is a mouthful — Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana — but when it is about two gods battling it out, the tongue twister seems appropriate. The Kannada film has been making waves in film circles across the country, exciting viewers with its fresh and contemporary take on the Hindu trilogy of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, located within the gangster genre. What if these gods lost their superpowers and descended among us as ordinary humans? Will we still look upon their actions with awe and respect or will we shrivel away from them? Set in smalltown Mangaluru, the film narrates the story of two boys — Hari and Shiva — who meet under unusual circumstances. Hari's single mother is cleaning fish. Her sharp nose picks up another pungent odour.

InterviewTo prepare for his role in Jai Bhim, Manikandan stayed with the Irulas for two months to understand their lives and lifestyles better.Subha J RaoIn the recent Jai Bhim, which has triggered a fierce debate on custodial brutality and what the courts can do to offer justice, there’s a scene where Rasakannu (Manikandan), a marginalised person who knows his place in society, tells the rich man he cannot take money for removing the snake from his house, because he was merely helping him. “Plus, your wife is from my village,” he smiles. The wife flings a casteist retort at him. Rasakannu’s smiling face crumples like a balloon pricked. If Jai Bhim hit as hard as it did, the way Manikandan humanised Rasakannu had a big role to play. He showed us what a lovely, loving man Rasakannu was, and why he did not deserve to be treated the way he was.

KollywoodMohan G is back with yet another film that spouts his violent, casteist propaganda, creating false narratives about romance, masculinity, social justice and anti-caste ideology.Bharathy SingaravelAs if Mohan G’s Draupathi (2020) wasn’t enough of a casteist, violent, propaganda film to suffer through, he seems all set to come back with yet another tale on the righteousness of dominant caste men and the “evil” specter of inter-caste, inter-religious love and social justice activists who are of course in his view, morally bankrupt and power-hungry. His upcoming Rudra Thandavam, the trailer for which released recently, stars Richard Rishi, Radha Ravi and Gautham Vasudev Menon among others. Tamil cinema has had an unfortunate dimension of propagating caste pride for a long time. A trend that took form in the mid-eighties and became even more prevalent in the nineties when land-owing intermediate castes, usually the Thevar caste cluster and Gounders were depicted...

Currently, the amount due allegedly stands at Rs 23.70 crore and Dmy Creations sought for a ban on Darbar’s release until the dues are settled. In their countersuit filed...

MollywoodAward-winning and critically acclaimed movies along with popular new films have found a place on online streaming sites.CrisThere was a time when young ones flocked to the CD shops in Thiruvananthapuram’s Beemappally in search of the new foreign films that never get released in Kerala, or the pirated copies of ones they’d missed. When Torrent came and movies from any place could be downloaded online (mostly pirated copies and therefore illegal), the CDs stopped selling so much. Torrent sites got banned soon enough and even as the smarter ones found proxies, the interest simply waned with the coming of online streaming sites. Netflix and then the cheaper alternate Amazon Prime offered so much that people didn’t mind actually paying for the movies they loved to somehow snatch and watch so far. Other streaming platforms joined the list, much to the delight of film buffs. Law in place,...

KollywoodThe two directors have only a handful of films to their credit but they have created a space for themselves in the industry.CV AravindThere is hardly any dearth in numbers as far as the release of Tamil films is concerned, only a handful of films have impacted the box office while the others have returned to the cans in record time. But, the silver lining is that the industry now boasts of a number of young filmmakers who can be counted on to hold the banner of Tamil cinema aloft in the coming days. Themes considered taboo are being tackled with gusto, and audiences which were lulled into a soporific slumber by the monotonous fare now have something to cheer for. Film Commentary'Kaala' is a deliberately crafted anti-thesis to 'Nayakan', rewritten from a Dalit-Bahujan perspective.Rajesh RajamaniLike any other film by Pa Ranjith, the release of Kaala (2018) too witnessed several analytical and 'de-coding' pieces written on it. One thing that was common among all these pieces is that they compared Kaala with Mani Ratnam's Nayakan (1987) on some point or the other. This was understandable for two reasons. One, the story in both movies is located in Dharavi, Mumbai. And secondly, one of them starred Kamal Hassan and the other, Rajinikanth. The careers of these two competing stars have been continuously compared and contrasted since the 1980s. Ashameera Aiyappan (The Indian Express) wrote, “Even the story of a vigilante gangster in the slums of Dharavi isn’t new — we have Nayagan, a classic that will be cherished by generations, from Mani Ratnam again.” S Shivakumar (The Hindu) claimed, “The...

NewsThe Congress chief took to Twitter to post a photo of the duo on Wednesday.Tnm StaffTwitter: @RahulGandhiIndian National Congress President Rahul Gandhi met with acclaimed director Pa Ranjith on Tuesday. Taking to Twitter to post a photo of the meeting on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “I met film director P A Ranjith the man behind blockbuster films like Madras, Kabali and Kaala and actor Kalaiyarasan, in Delhi yesterday. We talked about politics, films and society. I enjoyed the interaction and look forward to continuing our dialogue.” Rahul Gandhi is dressed in a bluish white shirt while Ranjith is seen sporting a smart black polo tee. The smiling men were clicked shaking hands in what seems to be a garden in the background. Present along with them was actor Kalaiarasan, who acted in Ranjith’s Attakathi, Madras and Kabali. The actor received praise from several quarters for his role as Anbu in Madras. The critically acclaimed filmmaker has been vocal about politics, both on and off camera. While the filmmaker has directed only four films, he has taken the industry by storm with the socio-political commentary in his films. Presenting a subaltern perspective through his filmmaking and exploring the uncomfortable realm of caste politics, the director has been vocal in his stance against the Neet examinations, among other pressing issues, which has been a point of contention between the state and the Central government. The director’s fiery speech on the suicide of Anita, a Dalit girl who fought against the one size fits all entrance examinations for medical studies, went viral last year. Ranjith has become the envy of the film industry after making two films with Rajinikanth, a feat formerly achieved only by decade-old directors. Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with the director comes ahead of the former’s likely bid for the country’s top job in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Also read: It’s official! The latest to join the bandwagon is Gujarat Mla and Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani. Jignesh took to Twitter to compliment director Pa Ranjith on his directorial venture. “Do watch P. Ranjith's #Kaala : Watched Kala yesterday and felt that I am also a Kala. Very good film. Jignesh also voiced his praise for the movie in an article for The Print. “Ranjith’s film is a brilliant cultural response to the Brahminical ideology, and I love the fact that he has been able to harness the most commercial medium to do so,” says Jignesh in his article. The Gujarat Mla went on to say that “films like Kaala come as a relief” as he feels that “After the 1990s, we hardly get to see a working-class hero, a chawl, a basti, or the plight of a working widow”. In his article, Jignesh notes that mediums like cinema and journalism do not cover the issues of Dalits and the working class. “In films like Kaala, hearing the slogans of Jai Bhim, or seeing paintings and imagery of Ambedkar and Gautam Buddha is understandably very appealing to the Dalit masses, who are otherwise invisibilised in mainstream media,” writes Jignesh. Jignesh also questions the “celebrities” of India for not taking a political stand even as they have the power to influence people. “And then you have people like Prakash Raj, who has put his whole acting career at stake and is bravely asking questions, speaking truth to power even as it has cost him future Hindi film roles,” he writes. Kaala Animal trainer Simon reveals exclusive details on Mani's role in the film. Priyanka ThirumurthyThe heavens finally opened up in Chennai, a day ahead of the release of superstar Rajinikanth's film Kaala. Merciful showers lashed the ground even as we made our way into the Mylapore Fine Arts Club. A short walk inside and we immediately recognised animal trainer Simon, tending to a bull that was preparing to 'act' in a play. But it was another hour before the Kaala star we were awaiting at the venue graced us with his presence. Trotting into the club fashionably late, was a character from the film who has been splashed on posters across the world since the film's promos began. And a few sniffs and friendly pats later - Mani, the Indian mongrel that stars as Rajinikanth's pet in the movie, finally settled in for an interview. His trainer Simon, with 30 years of animal training under his belt, is by no means new to the film industry. "But after training a dog for Rajinikanth's film, I have shot to international fame. Mani has really bolstered my career," he says, still shocked by the sheer number of interviews he has given over the last two months. So, is 'Mani' actually the dog's name in the film? "I haven't revealed this to anyone before," he starts, with a smile. "But since the film is releasing tomorrow, I'll tell you. His name in the film is actually 'Asami' (common man)," he reveals. But what is the subtext? Is a dog being compared to the common man's plight? "You'll have to ask the director that," he grins. "But I can tell you that whenever Superstar is in the scene, Mani will definitely appear soon after. He will go running every time Rajini calls him from the jeep and will always be around him," he adds. Mani shares a great equation with Rajinikanth who pretty much won his loyalty on the first day with a packet of biscuits. "Before all of us, he would know when Rajini sir entered the sets. He'll start whining and when we let him go, he'll run straight to the caravan and wait for him. Sir also really likes him. Even when he jumped on him, Rajini sir will say 'Let him be, it is okay'," he explains. The last dog to gain this kind of attention in a Rajini film was the imposing great Dane that appeared briefly in Baasha. Mani, on the other hand, is a fawn coloured indie with immense energy. So, what led to his casting in the Pa Ranjith film? "I showed Ranjith sir close to 30 dogs and he wasn't satisfied. He said he doesn't want Labradors or German Sheperds, only a native breed. So, I was on the look out for a mongrel," he narrates. "The way I found Mani was extraordinary. I was at a signal in Tambaram when an animal jumped across the road in just two leaps. I looked around and asked people if it was a deer. They laughed and said it was just a dog. But I knew I'd found my actor," he shares. Simon went chasing Mani down the road, almost getting bitten in the process. The dog had no collar and was being taken care of by locals. He immediately snapped a picture of him and sent it to the director. "Ranjith saw its perky ears and sharp eyes and immediately decide to cast him in the film," says Simon. "He was easy to train and quick to follow instructions. We've shot with him for three months in Bombay and in Evp film city," he adds, patting Mani on the head appreciatively. So, does it even come as a surprise, that there is a huge demand from across the world to buy the dog? "I've got offers up to Rs.2 crore," says Simon. "It started with Rs.30,000, but some Malaysian Tamils are ready to even pay crores to get hold of the dog that acted in the Rajini film. But he is like a child to me, I can't give him away," he explains. After Kaala, Mani has already starred in three films. "One is a Bala movie, then Neeya 2 and finally a circus related movie. He stays with the heroine in that movie, despite being the hero's dog," he reveals. As of now, however, Mani is a busy boy. He has been attending multiple events, interviews and is gearing up for the big release on Thursday. ...

CinemaThe actor was speaking at the pre-release event for the film’s Telugu version in Hyderabad.Digital NativeTwitter/Lyca ProductionsRajinikanth’s upcoming film Kaala is all set for a massive release worldwide on June 7. While the expectation levels for this film is skyrocketing, at the pre-release event for the film’s Telugu version in Hyderabad, Rajinikanth said that he had watched the movie twice so far and can vouch that it has come out really well. According to a report in Toi, the actor said, “When it comes to Kaala, we don’t want to sing high praises about our own film and at the same time, we cannot reveal much about the story yet. I’ve seen the film twice and I liked it a lot. It’s not just for commercial reasons, but also has a good message to it.” He added, “The film is set in the backdrop of Dharavi slum, which is the largest slum in Asia. It deals with characters living inside this slum and tells the story of how it affects people’s lives. Usually in many films, only the hero’s character is of importance and the others may not be as significant. But in Kaala, there are at least six characters that will have a huge impact and will stay with you even after the movie.” Speaking at the same event, the film’s producer and actor Dhanush said that there is one and only one Rajinikanth, adding that it was an honour to work with an actor like him. Rajinikanth also had words of praises for the film’s heroines, Huma Qureshi and Easwari Rao. He lauded both of them for being patient through the filmmaking process and performing well in Kaala. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film also stars Nana Patekar, Samuthirakani, Aruldoss, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Aravind Akash and Sayaji Shinde. Santosh Narayanan has composed the music for this action entertainer with G Murali handling the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing. Interestingly, director Pa Ranjith, superstar Rajinikanth and music composer Santhosh Narayanan had worked together in Kabali and the film was a smash hit. With the trio teaming up for the second time, expectations are very high on Kaala. HotstarA documentarian looks back at her own childhood and uncovers startling truths.Sandeep NarayananScreenshot/HotstarHBO’s latest offering The Tale starts with an intriguing disclaimer: “The story you’re about to see is true. As far as I know it.” The Tale takes a close look at director Jennifer Fox’s own life as she navigates through the memories of her childhood to uncover something dark and disturbing. The thing about childhood memories are that they are never completely our own , they are hand-me-downs from people around us, and trying to recollect these memories can be like looking through a kaleidoscope. Colourful and constantly changing, creating a new pattern, a new story, every single time. And sometimes what you discover is not pleasant. Laura Dern plays Jennifer Fox, a 48-year-old documentarian whose life is suddenly and irrevocably turned upside down when she receives a call from her mother who discovers some stories Jennifer had written as a 13-year-old. These letters reveal that young Jennifer (played by a very impressive Isabelle Nélisse) was used as a pawn as part of some perverse sexual fantasy of her track coach Bill (Jason Ritter) and married equestrian instructor Mrs. G ( Elizabeth Debicki). Jennifer refuses to accept that she was sexually abused in the beginning, even after her mother shows her the stories. “It is just a story, Mom,” she says. She truly believes that it was a consensual relationship that she was in. In her mind, she was old enough to make decisions about relationships. In the story she had concocted for herself, she even looked older when the abuse happened. She refuses to believe that she was a victim. Realisation strikes her when her mother shows her a picture of how she looked when she was 13. Thus begins Jennifer’s journey into her past and it takes her down a rabbit hole of despair. The result is a self exploration of sexual abuse, guided solely by the memories of an adolescent girl and a mature person who is in denial. The entire story is constructed in a very interesting way, where the older and younger versions of Jennifer meet up across time to make sense of the way things had happened. The younger Jennifer is constantly at loggerheads with her older self; the more her older self uncovers, the more uncomfortable her 13-year-old self gets. Over the course of the film, we see the disturbing and horrifying truth of child sexual abuse. The director has chosen to show scenes of Bill raping a young Jennifer (a disclaimer informs us that an adult body double was used for these scenes). But, this creates some very intense and dark moments which make us sit up and take notice. The scene doesn’t fade to black, it is not left to the viewers' imagination. As viewers, we are forced to confront the truth, it is not pretty, it is not romantic, it is ugly and one needs to understand that. In the last scene of The Tale, we see Laura Dern and Isabelle Nélisse sitting next to each other and trying to make sense of the horrific ordeal she had been through and why she had chosen to create these myths about her life. Those questions are not answered. It leaves us with a void, a sense of loss. But what this film bravely and effectively does is that it helps start a conversation which is sorely needed. Talking about child sexual abuse is never easy. It is one of those things that often get shoved under the carpet, the victims often bury these memories deep within the recesses of their mind. In a country where a child is sexually abused every 15 minutes, according to the latest government figures, one needs to not only talk but act against abusers and create an environment where children can feel safe and open up about these issues. Because as human beings we effectively try to shut out and forget painful memories and create false narratives that are easier to deal with. Like Joan Didion famously wrote in her 1979 book of essays, White Album, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live." The story of Jennifer is that of many a victim but it is only now in the times of #metoo and #timesup that women are getting an opportunity to tell these stories and be taken seriously. The Tale is an important film; it is an act of courage. It is disturbing and definitely not an easy watch but it is an extraordinary story which deserves to be heard. Controversy'Kaala' is facing a ban in Karnataka with the Confederation of Pro-Kannada Organisations objecting to the film's release.Tnm StaffEven as the Confederation of Pro-Kannada Organisations has called for a ban on Rajinikanth's upcoming film Kaala, actor and President of the Tamil Film Producers' Council Vishal has said that he will meet the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Speaking to reporters in Chennai on Wednesday, Vishal said, "We insisted to Sa Ra Govind (Kannada film producer). Because cinema is different from politics. That's what we insisted from our side. Kaala film has been made by a producer and he has brought it to release stage. Superstar Rajinikanth has acted in it. This is a film. Superstar Rajinikanth coming to politics is politics. We requested that nothing should affect the release. Depending on what decision they take tomorrow morning, we will definitely take efforts to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy."(sic) Speaking to Tnm earlier, Secretary of the Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce, Umesh Banakar said that distributors and exhibitors had approached the Film Chamber on Tuesday, stating that they do not want to screen Kaala in the state. “The distributor of the film, Goldie Films and around 25 to 30 exhibitors had met the President of the Film Chamber today (Tuesday) and submitted statements that they do not want to screen Kaala as Rajinikanth’s statements regarding the Cauvery water sharing issue had hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas,” Umesh Banakar said. Pro-Kannada outfits want apology from Rajini on Cauvery issue On Wednesday, Vishal batted for the actor turned politician, urging the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to resolve the issue surrounding the release of Kaala. He tweeted that Rajinikanth had only shown his responsibility and had exercised his freedom of speech. Vishal added that the ban was uncalled for. Rajinikanth was caught in a similar spot in 2008 before the release of his film Kuselan. Participating in the hunger strike for the Hoggenakal water sharing dispute called for by the Nadigar Sangam, an aggressive Rajini made strong remarks against the ruling class in Karnataka. His “kick them” comment did not sit well with the Kannadigas who were up in arms against the actor, demanding an apology. He later apologised for his remarks. With the Tamil Nadu electorate watching, however, it remains to be seen how the politician handles demands for an apology this time around. OpinionThe irony in Rajini's statement, about Tn turning into a graveyard if people protested for 'everything', is not lost on those awaiting 'Kaala'.Sowmya RajendranRajinikanth's visit to Thoothukudi, where 13 people were killed by police firing last week, did not go as smoothly as the actor-politician would have wished to. Although there were several people in Thoothukudi who welcomed him and took photographs with the superstar, social media was abuzz with a viral video which showed a young protester asking Rajinikanth who he was. Later, at the press conference, Rajinikanth lost his cool and shouted at a journalist who was asking him questions about the police's action against the protesters. There are broadly two narratives which have emerged from Thoothukudi. While the activists and protesters have been saying that the police did not issue any warning and fired to kill, the state government (which is increasingly being seen as a puppet of the Bjp at the Centre) has repeatedly defended the brutality by laying the blame on 'anti-social elements'. Rajinikanth chose to go with the latter narrative, stating that the police retaliated because they were under attack. Further, to one of the questions, the actor-politician snapped, "If people protest for everything, Tamil Nadu will turn into a graveyard." The "everything" in Thoothukudi stands for clean air and water, a right to live a life free from disease. On one side are the people who have been fighting a powerful corporate company for years now and had upped the ante with a 100 day protest. On the other side, is Vedanta, a corporate that has given generous contributions to the two national parties, has a dubious record in several countries and is facing allegations of environmental violations in the state. The situation, in fact, would make for a great Rajinikanth film. Of course, one where Rajinikanth would firmly be on the side of the protesters. The irony is not lost on the public in Tamil Nadu, which is eagerly awaiting the release of the Pa Ranjith film Kaala. The second trailer of the film, which released only a few days ago, has the superstar thundering about getting people organised in order to protest. The powerful lines that he mouths go, "Our body is our only weapon. We must show the world that. Gather everybody!" The relationship between director Pa Ranjith and actor Rajinikanth has been keenly discussed by many. Apart from his films rendering the oppressed as powerful and mainstream, Ranjith is also vocal about his Ambedkarite politics as an individual. An atheist, he has repeatedly spoken out against caste oppression, gender inequality, saffronisation, and communalism. He was among the first from the film industry to slam the police brutality against the protesters in no uncertain terms. Rajinikanth, on the other hand, is religious and is considered aligned with the right wing. He has been terming his brand of politics as "spiritual" (whatever that may mean). And although he had tweeted condemning the police violence on Twitter, in Thoothukudi, his statements focused on "anti-social elements" rather than the killings. It's not that Pa Ranjith is unaware of these differences. He has been quite clear that Rajinikanth, to him, is a vehicle through which he can take his politics to a much larger audience. At the Kaala audio launch, the director once again reiterated the idea. There's no better way to mainstream his thoughts than amplify them through a mass brand like Rajinikanth. For the actor, who has already done several films where he plays the underdog who rises to power, a Ranjith film is a much more politically charged, nuanced and intelligent framework which will add to his demi-god image. However, Rajinikanth's leaning takes on more gravity with the actor's decision to enter politics and contest elections. It leads to troubling questions for both the filmmaker and the actor. When cinema has, in the past, led to the success of actors in politics, is Ranjith willing to continue building up the image of a politician he does not personally agree with? How will Rajinikanth reconcile what the reel Rajini says in a Ranjith film with what the real Rajini thinks? The difference is stark and the public has started calling it out. If Wednesday's events at Thoothukudi had been part of a film, the young man's "Yaar neenga?" ("Who are you?") to the politician who turned up long after the agitation was over, would have been the punch dialogue uttered by Rajinikanth. No marks for guessing who the villain would have been. Despite Rajinikanth's statements being against the public mood in Tamil Nadu, Kaala will probably still get a mammoth opening. But perhaps more people will be conscious that what they're watching is more of a Pa Ranjith film and less of a Rajinikanth film.
