South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk has died in Latvia aged 59 after contracting Covid-19, according to reports.
The award-winning director had travelled to the Baltic country last month and intended to buy a house near the capital, Riga, according to local media. He reportedly died this morning (December 11) from Covid-19 complications.
Kim’s death was confirmed to local outlet Delfi.lv by ArtDocFest/Riga director Vitaly Mansky and his interpreter, Daria Krutova.

Award-winning and deeply divisive South Korean film director Kim Ki-duk has died of Covid-19-related complications while on a visit to Latvia.
Variety has confirmed Kim’s death with sources in Estonia who were working with him on a new project. The director died of coronavirus in a hospital in the Latvian capital of Riga on Thursday. He was 59. Due to European laws, the hospital won’t officially comment on the case.
The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it had been informed of the death in hospital of a 59 year old Korean man, but declined to disclose his name. It said that it was helping with funeral arrangements. The Latvian Embassy in Seoul also confirmed reports of the death.
Kim Soon-mo of Kim Ki-Duk Film told local media that Kim’s family had been informed of the death by an interpreter.

Ahn Sung-ki made his film debut at the age of 5 in 1957 and has been one of the most popular actors in Korea ever since. Graduated from Korea University of Foreign Studies majoring in Vietnamese. He won the Best Actor award in Asia-Pacific Film Festival in 1993 for his role in the film ‘White Badge’ (based on the novel of the same title about the Vietnamese war viewed from eyes of a Korean soldier) and he went on winning a plethora of awards, with his role in “Unbowed” being the latest one, in 2012.
