Dawn of War 3. A story about how a game developer gave its decade long fans the finger.

Warning: Spoilers
What is Dawn of War 3 to the non-fan?

It's an extremely simplified RTS game and dumbed down. Very generic in its combat, unit design, game-play style and offers nothing but horde mode. You spam a lot of units, send them off to get killed extremely quickly by God DPS hero units. Cover elements are dumbed down, designed not to have emphasis on any form of realism. Capture the bubble and stand still. Leave the bubble, it vanishes. Must recap, making the process of holding areas trivial and cheap. Nor does Relic want you to build a large base to defend with turrets, alike DOW 1. The developer wants you to play this game Starcraft'ish. Except Starcraft is far better. Expanding is absolutely mandatory, maps suck and are tiny. Campaign offers naught but a glorified tutorial. Lastly, this is DOW. NOT STARCRAFT. So why, Relic?

This is Relic showing us how little they care about the original concept of DOW. A shameful display but a perfect example of developer and lead designer incompetence. We expressed concern for months.

Ever since the 1st game-play video the fans of the franchise have said the same thing: " This does not look like DOW." It has moba graphics and hero units. It has a star-crafty feel because of the miniature models and irrelevancy of units we used to build, follow around and watch do combat.

Animations are lackluster and cheap. Extremely amateurish There are no kill moves, no interesting death animations. Everything blows up into cheap red paint pools. 40k arcade crap on steam have done this better. Gabriel Angelos (RIP voice actor) now jumps around the battlefield like a pretty ballet dancer. He has no jet- pack. But hey. What is lore, right Phillipe?

What is lore when you see a predator tank drive up to a bunch of space marines and they defeat the predator within 1 minute with STANDARD BOLTERS. No rockets. No plasma. Nothing.

What is Dawn of War if not a gritty, rough, realistic looking 40k game set in a grim dark universe of war, death, blood and gore. But involving a realistic tactical element, polished animations, fun management of upgrading all your units, giving them relevant special abilities, selecting what your individual large squads should be tuned for. Morale damage, damage vs armored targets, heroes, buildings and tanks?

Well. None of these things are in Dawn of War 3. And to this day I still don't understand why. Why the lead designer would sit down and express his love for 40k and paint some models with the interviewer. Yet in the game the army painter is a complete joke and the graphics are dumbed down. There is no zoom option, there is no GOD FORSAKEN VARIETY IN UNIT DESIGN. ALL YOUR MEN IN THE SQUADS, ORC, ELDAR AND IMPERIAL ALIKE ...LOOK... THE SAME. What... the F ! PHIL?! ITS 2017! WHAT IS EFFORT?! 60 BUCKS?!

"coughs" sorry. As we fans know, this is a touchy subject.

What else? Ah yes. Some overall things. Firstly, the rosters are smaller. There is no variation, nor upgrades anymore. This is because the heroes are meant to turn the tide of the fight with their broken abilities. Thats why people argue its moba- ish. In the hero sense that when they use their abilities, standard units, no matter how epic get cut in pieces like paper. Because what is lore... ? Right Boulle? Its far better to look at Gorgutz 'Eadhunter swing his new weird arm in the air and create an impenetrable shield with wonky looking visual design that comes across as cartoony.

The units are so tiny, and as mentioned and without a zoom you'll not remotely care when bodies begin piling up. Because its mostly just cheap looking gore pits. And considering the maps are SO CLEAN, AND GENERIC you'll never think that a battlefield is being created as such. And thats when you can actually SEE THE FIGHT. The visuals are so overdone with flashy lights that you are blind. Battlefields look like lit up Christmas trees. ( not a good way) You will never want to camp, build large bases and watch as tons of armies collide in choke-point fights. Typical DOW 1 stuff. Watching as the camera would shake when you zoomed down, looking at the well detailed heavy bolter marine, gunning like crazy. Its over so fast now and lackluster to behold. The economy wont allow it.

Armies look more like blobs. No sense of size or heaviness. Things die fast to whatever they fight.

Dumbing down the graphics is so dumb when DOW 1 mods with superior mechanics have showed us how cool a sister of battle could look in high res. Or tyranid. Or demon. The modding community turned DOW 1 into what DOW 3 should have ultimately been. But Relic aren't developers that are gamers. They don't understand what DOW truly is. Because if they did they would have added to the game, not taken so much away. And they would have known better than to cater to Starcraft players.

DOW used to feel like this: https://youtu.be/XZ-EOg38t1o?t=1

Up, close, personal, rattling, gritty with superior sound, polish, emphasis on destruction, grim environments and bad-ass characters that were realistic and could be taken seriously. DOW 3 comes up short every single time.

DOW 1 had variety, unique faction gameplay. Lots of buildings, units. Not to mention with Soulstorm we had 9 factions. Only got 3 here. Because DLC, right Sega? 1 final thing, Phillipe. Gameplay over Graphics, means gameplay should have DEPTH! Your game is as deep as a puddle. 5 out of 10 game. Painfully average, worse of the franchise. Thanks to the developers of old for DOW 1. Shame that the new Relic tarnishes your legacy.
