Kobe Bryant, who with his daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash Sunday, will be recognized during the 92nd Oscars ceremony which is set for February 9 on ABC.

Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers icon, won an Animated Short Oscar in 2018 for Dear Basketball. The short film, revolving around an essay he wrote as he neared retirement from the NBA in 2016, was animated by Glen Keane and featured music by John Williams.

The Oscar ceremony annually features and In Memoriam segment devoted to those in the industry have died in the past year. It’s unclear whether the Bryant mention will be part of that block or something else.

“We can confirm that Kobe Bryant will be acknowledged in the telecast,” the Academy said in a statement today.

Kobe Bryant’s 20 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers were honored on Monday in a star-filled journey down NBA memory lane. The 18-time NBA Mvp had not one but two jerseys immortalized at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, as both his No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys were hung from the rafters. When asked which jersey he preferred, the Lakers legend replied: “I kind of go back and forth. Eight has something that 24 will never, ever, ever, ever have, and that’s the ability to grow hair. Verizon-owned video app go90 has nabbed the premiere for Oscar contender Dear Basketball from Kobe Bryant. 

The five-minute film, which hails from animator and director Glen Keane, features the former Los Angeles Laker reading his poem of the same name. Composer John Williams provides the score.

Ten short films are shortlisted by the Academy’s Animations and Shorts branch to vie for the final five nominations for Best Animated Short Film. The shortlist includes Pixar’s “Lou,” written and directed by Dave Mullins. The short premiered at SXSW earlier this year and was shown in theaters ahead of “Cars 3.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 10 finalists for the Animated Short Film race and none other than hometown hero Kobe Bryant has made the cut.

Glen Keane’s “Dear Basketball,” which the five-time NBA Champion co-wrote, has made the shortlist along with Pixar’s “Lou” and eight other finalists. Bryant has focused on non-basketball activities since his retirement in 2015, but worked with Keane, a Disney animation legend, to craft an animated short about his childhood love for basketball over the past year.

In advance of his keynote speech in Annecy this week (on Tues 13 June), veteran Disney animator Glen Keane (the creator of characters from Ariel in The Little Mermaid to the Beast, Pocahontas and Tarzan), has revealed further details about how he came to collaborate with recently retired NBA legend, Kobe Bryant.

Late in his career, Bryant wrote a poetic letter to his younger, six-year-old self, “Dear Basketball.” Bryant had been contemplating an animated film based on the poem. “He (Bryant) had been meeting with various studios and then he saw a little film I had done for Google (Spotlight Stories) called Duet,” Keane explained of his Vr film from 2014 that was available in both interactive and non-interactive forms.

“Kobe really connected with the hand-crafted quality to it and also to the (idea of) the visual poem,” the animator said of the legendary La Lakers...

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival (June 12-17) opens today. Screen runs through five key things to look out for.

1. Key debuts

Annecy will host first-look footage of Pixar’s upcoming title Coco (pictured) and showcase the world premiere of Universal’s Despicable Me 3, two of the most anticipated animation movies of the year. The level of buzz will be telling.

The response to Animal Crackerz, the starry Spanish-us co-pro, will also be intriguing.

At the other end of the financial spectrum, the festival will host the premiere of Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman’s Loving Vincent, which is billed as the world’s ‘first fully-painted feature film’. The biopic of Vincent Van Gogh was made by 125 painters producing more than 60,000 oil paintings. In advance of the Annecy premiere, the film’s trailer racked up 2.6m views on YouTube.

2. Women in animation...

Chicago – The 16th Tribeca Film Festival wrapped last Sunday (April 30, 2017) and the award-winning films of the festival have been named. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com was there for the first week of Tribeca and files his personal best of the films he experienced.

This is Patrick switching to first person, and I was able to see 13 media and film works, and took a turn in the “Immersive” or Virtual Reality arcade (there will a separate article on that experience). I sampled TV, short films, documentaries and narrative films, and rank them from first preferred on down, but honestly I didn’t see anything that I didn’t like, which is a testament to the programmers of this iconic film festival.
