Masterpiece - A mass movie with no class
joppanLive5 January 2018
A movie which is intended just for mass. There were mass movies released in Malayalam in the past. Narasimham, Araam Thamburaan, The King, Raavanaprabu, etc. are few of them. But what makes 'Masterpiece' different from them is, this one is just 'mass' without any class.

The director relied mainly on the charisma of Mammootty to take this movie forward. There were many glitches in the script of Uday Krishna. There are so many unnecessary irrelevant scenes scripted to this entertainer which takes away the class of this movie. For example, all scenes of Captain Raju, a scene of script-writer Uday, too many fights, etc were unnecessary and atrocious. Also, the way college life is portrayed in the movie seems highly artificial as it gave you a feeling that the college is just for fighting and showoffs. The climax of the movie and the last minute revelation about the hero character sounds kiddish and not credible at all.

Now coming to the performance, Mammootty looks young and energetic, and easily credited with the star of the show. Unni Mukundhan and Varalaksmi gave a stellar performance, Mahima Nambiar was underutilized ( as a young talented actress, she could have rejected this silly role), whereas Poonam Bajwa gave us a mockery.

This is an honest review from the heart of a Mammotty fan. There are some mass scenes for a Mammootty fan to cheer, but at the end once you are done with the movie, you will feel an emptiness and a sigh that this movie could have been made better.

I don't think even Ikka fans could suffer this movie for more than 2 scenes with him.

Pure waste of time. Pointless other than for one finally suspense. There were a few reasons that persuaded me to watch the movie. One director Ajai Vasudev his last movie Rajadhiraja with Mammootty that came out last year was a perfect entertainer with decent story line, so when the duo came together again I expected lot of entertainment but did I get it, NO. Second Gokul Suresh, Sureshettan's son I wanted see his acting and I knew he was in the movie, to be honest he in not bad but I wasn't impressed and I am a huge fan of Suresh Gopi. 3rd the action scenes I saw the trailer, after watching the movie that is one of the reasons I would tell people not to watch the movie. The action are ten minutes long and take forever to finish, because it is completely in slow motion. It was fun to see Ikka on screen again and I loved his style and look but after a while even he couldn't make me entertained. This could have been amazing if the some of the scenes were removed and trimmed down making it more racy thriller. But in the condition that it is in right now I would recommend watching Aadu 2

Capsule Review: Masterpiece
nairtejas5 January 2018
One can complete watching Ajai Vasudev's latest feature with only agitation in mind. There's no way else one can endure 155 minutes of mindless sequences that cross all levels of logic or sense. Mammootty plays a dashing English professor in a government college currently embroiled in a crime thriller saga of its own. The students come to college not to study but to engage in gang rivalries and eve-teasing. Despite having poor knolwedge in phonetics, the professor plays an intelligent detective-cum-good Samaritan-cum-angel guardian-cum-loverboy who helps a group of students in a murder case that has put the studies of the college in hold for the time being. Nothing is logical in the film as one can easily predict in a Vasudev film. Moreover, the mass entertainment that it promises is only restricted to people who love watching human bodies flying in the air for minutes long and characters walking in slow motion. I even have this theory that if they had made Mammootty's character not walk in slow motion but in regular fashion, the film would have been 30 minutes shorter. And talking about editing, the first 20 minutes look like the makers forgot to hire an editor as random sequences play in front of you. With Poonam Bajwa as the eye candy and Unni Mukundan as this superhero cop, Masterpiece again tries to define heroism by giving power and convenience to the protagonist who seems to be more interested in crime than Chaucer. All in all, other than a captivating death sequence at the end, there is nothing worth watching in Masterpiece, easily one of the worst films of 2017. TN.

A turbulent failure ; works only as a mass entertainer
CobertNeede26 December 2017
Masterpiece was and is one of the most waited films of this year. Its lead cast comprising of Mammootty, Unni Mukundan, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Poonam Bajwa, a newcomer. The film also houses many young stars who are stuggling to find a place in Malayalam cinema, so kudos to the casting director for such a impressive array of young talents.

The film was touted as a mass, action thriller early on itself. After Rajadhiraja, a miserable failure from Ajai Vasudev, comes Masterpiece. It puts itself against a background of a college, where students are split into several factions. A subsequent crime and its events follow up the film's plot. The acting was commendable by the lead cast, although the quirky handling of the camera made it look kind of ugly. The direction is in all praise for a mass film, which Ajai handled perfectly.

If not titled and promoted as a mass entertainer, Masterpiece would have been a stunning failure. Aside from Mammootty's impressive performance, coupled with some really good fight scenes, Masterpiece falls flat at every department. Unni Mukundan, was not a surprise casting since he is known for his excellence in action roles and scenes.

The entire film hangs on the climax, which may come surprising for many.

Pathetic one yet again!!!
momsaysnogirlzzz13 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
As always its yet again proved that Mammooty films miserably fails to give worth of the money we've spent for a movie ticket. The introduction of the so called macho 'college gangs' and their names itself sprouted laughter and it literally brought the audience back to the Tamil/Telugu movies college gang sequels which were common 9-10 years back . Even though mammooty appears only in the second half each and every scene and dialogues were scripted to exaggerate the star value of the actor who is continuously disappointing common audience (except hard-core fans)and every now and then megastar utters 'I respect women', which adds salt to the injury of those who were trapped inside the theater , the script writer and director tried to save the star from the allegations recently raised against his A rated dialogues in the film 'Kasaba' which was another garbage, by including dialogues showcasing his "respect" for women. The fight sequences, without any doubt puts Telugu movies and even Sir Issac Newton who invented Gravity into shame. Villains were seen bouncing in the ground and flying above trees after getting hit by the 'Megastar'. Saju navodaya's intended comedy attempts were nothing less than agony. Its high time directors should look for a strong script and a convincing storyline which audience's can digest. Mammooty should at least have a look at the script before signing for innumerable new films I am writing this review after watching his latest scrap Parole and as a paying customer i have decided not to waste my bucks on mammooty films anymore. Also directors and script writers should at least have try not to degrade one of the finest Film industry im india comparable to the likes of Telugu and tried and tested craps.

mohamedshakir-0349110 September 2019
An okay suspense thriller + mass heroism scenes but not a class one. Mammootty's screen presence was good to watch and fights stunts were great. Not a great storyline and screenplay, last 30 mins was very engaging.

One of the worst movies.
tigeron-1021626 March 2018
An average viewer can simply guess the climax. There is no logic in the storyline. The guest role of captain raju was a complete disaster. Totally, a bad movie.

Pathetic!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know why I rated this 3 Star.

Masterpiece is the kind of movie that makes you question your decision making abilities because you just spent two and half hours of your life inside the movie hall watching an unreasonable show of insanity.

DON'T MISS THIS MOVIE
megaelecs26 December 2017
A good movie. Mammootty appears almost an hour later and carries the movie till the end. It is a pleasure to watch trim and fit Mammooty.. The movie picks up the momentum towards the end. The highlight of the movie is its suspense maintained. The negative points are the unnecessary long stunt scenes - a la Rajanikanth style - with the heros bashing like super human beings and a couple of song- dance sequences. DON'T MISS THIS MOVIE.

"MASTERPIECE - A MASSY FLICK"
Alanaji_166 January 2018
Masterpiece directed by Ajai Vasudev (after Rajadhiraja), is a mass action entertainer which actually works even though it has its share of flaws. The film has its star cast consisting of Mammootty, Uni mukundan, Varalaxmi, Mukesh, Shajohn, Goulding Suresh, Maqbool Salman and so on.. The story of the film is set in a campus where we have 2 rival groups (as seen in most movies) and some incidents that take place. In between a new professor joins and tries to make peace with the groups. Even though we have seen a similar movie (Velipadinte Pusthakam) with the same theme this year, Masterpiece, I shall say is far better because the screenplay is racy and never bores you. After writting a blockbuster hit last year, Udayakrishna returns yet again and the dialogues are the one that suit a mass movie. But this film is not with its share of flaws because the film could have been done with a little more shorter lenght as some scenes were not up to mark. Also even though the songs sounded good to the ears, the placement of 3 songs in the second half seemed not to well. Despite its flaws the movie keeps us engaged as it is also treated as anew investigation thriller coupled with some well performed action and some humour. Mammootty shine as Edward Livingston. This role seemed tailor made for him. Uni Mukundan too shined in his role especially in action sequences. Rest of the cast did a good job but the character of Captain Raju seemed totally out of sync with the movie. So all in all this might not be a must watch but surely it gives a bang for your buck. My rating: 3/5
