The 78th Cannes Film Festival takes place May 13-24, 2025, with Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche presiding over the main competition's jury. Held on the stunning French Riviera, this annual event culminates in the prestigious Palme d'Or prize, given to a director for their feature film, which officially kicks off the year's awards cycle. To date, four winners of the Palme d'Or have gone on to win the Oscar for Best Picture: The Lost Weekend (1945), Marty (1955), Parasite (2019), and Anora (2024).
A highlight of this year's Cannes opening ceremony was Leonardo DiCaprio's presentation of the Honorary Palme d'Or to Robert De Niro, DiCaprio's costar in films like Killers of the Flower Moon and This Boy's Life. De Niro follows in the footsteps of such recent recipients as Meryl Streep, George Lucas, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, and Tom Cruise. Denzel Washington also received a surprise Honorary Palme d'Or on May 19.

Filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Brazilian movie The Secret Agent, which has been rumored to be a finalist for the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or, is having its stateside rights scooped up by Neon. A theatrical release is in the works for this year.
If the 1977-set political thriller takes home Cannes’ big prize, it will give Neon a sixth consecutive Palme d’Or win following last year’s Anora, Justine Triet’s 2023 winner Anatomy of a Fall, 2022’s Triangle of Sadness, 2021’s Titane and 2019’s Parasite. Out of that bunch, Anora and Parasite won Best Picture Oscars.
The Secret Agent premiered in competition at Cannes on Sunday to 100% fresh reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The pic stars Wagner Moura, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho and Hermila Guedes.

Neon has acquired the rights to “The Secret Agent,” a political thriller from writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring “Narcos” actor Wagner Moura that premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Set in Recife, Brazil in 1977, “The Secret Agent” stars Moura as Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, on the run. He arrives in Recife during carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son but soon realizes that the city is far from being the non-violent refuge he seeks.
In his positive review for TheWrap, Steve Pond called the film a messy romp.”Its messiness is part of its charm and part of the point; a film that took itself more seriously than this one wouldn’t let a climactic gun battle turn into an almost cartoonish grand guignol splatter-fest,” he wrote.

January 2024, Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho ascended a stage in Seoul flanked by 15 friends and colleagues from across the South Korean film industry. Collectively, the assembled directors, actors and producers, all dressed head to toe in black, had won more than two dozen Grand Bell Awards, South Korea’s equivalent to the Oscars. They were there, in force, to condemn their country’s police and media for the tragic fate of a friend and collaborator, actor Lee Sun-kyun. Two months earlier, Lee — one of the unforgettable leads of Bong’s multi-Oscar-winning drama Parasite — had been one of Korea’s biggest and most beloved movie stars. In the ensuing weeks, he had become a figure of scandal, ridicule and disgrace. On Dec. 27, 2023, he was discovered dead by suicide inside his car in a public parking lot near the center of Seoul. He was 48.
Lee’s downfall initially bewildered those who knew and cared about him.

It was moving to watch Denzel Washington lope up to the Lumière stage at Cannes and tear up as he accepted his Honorary Palme d’Or from Cannes veteran Spike Lee Monday night at the “Highest 2 Lowest” premiere. It was a surprise to the actor, as he watched a clip reel that ranged from his four prior roles with Lee to “Philadelphia,” “Flight,” “The Book of Eli,” “The Hurricane,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Fences,” and more.

Michael Angelo Covino’s open marriage comedy “Splitsville” brought much-needed laughter to Cannes on Monday night, earning a warm six-minute ovation.
As the applause roared, director Covino teared up and Dakota Johnson comforted him with a hug as he kissed her on the cheek.
It was Johnson’s first time in Cannes, but as a Venice Film Festival veteran she’s no stranger to applause. Even still, she humbly waved off the cheers when the camera panned to her first. Then, when Arjona got her roar of approval, her boyfriend Jason Momoa could be seen clapping enthusiastically in the row behind her. Covina and Marvin shared a brotherly embrace as they celebrated another well-received collaboration.
“We need to keep making comedies for Cannes, plain and simple. Because laughter should be seen in a theater, not on a television screen,” said Covino.

With Thunderbolts* in theaters and a few more roles on the way, Sebastian Stan has been killing it recently. Well, to be fair, he’s been killing the scene for quite some time now. Whether it’s Carter Baizen in Gossip Girl or Steve in Fresh, the actor has consistently proven his range on screen. Just look at A Different Man and The Apprentice – two completely different roles in the same year! And of course, we don’t even need to mention Bucky Barnes.
However, it looks like Sebastian Stan may not have been entirely transparent while auditioning for the plethora of characters he has played. As it turns out, he has lied a handful of times just to get ahead of the line. A little white lie never hurt anyone, right?

Ralph Fiennes to play President Snow in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
Ralph Fiennes, coming off his Oscar-nominated turn in Conclave, has taken a major role in Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping. He will play President Coriolanus Snow, the authoritarian leader of Panem. The role was played as an older man by Donald Sutherland in the 2010s Hunger Games films and as a young man by Tom Blyth in prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. This will of course be Fiennes' second time playing the iconic villain from a massively popular young adult book franchise; he previously played Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies. "We wanted to honor Donald Sutherland by having one of this generation’s greatest actors play President Snow 24 years before Katniss Everdeen entered the arena," producer Nina Jacobson said in a statement announcing Fiennes' casting.

The Hollywood Reporter shares that the director will run his company alongside partner Chris Ferguson and under the deal, "Neon will serve as the home for Perkins' projects, which he and Ferguson will produce."

The Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County, about a 45-minute drive from Hollywood proper (depending on traffic). They are a popular tourist destination because the layered rock formations jut out of the ground at strange, wild angles, giving them an alien look. Neon seems eager to stay in the Osgood Perkins business.
The indie studio has entered into a first-look deal with Perkins, the director of “Longlegs,” its biggest box office hit. The pact comes as he launches his new production banner, Phobos, with business partner Chris Ferguson.
As part of this new arrangement, Neon, Perkins and Ferguson will jointly produce upcoming projects, with Neon serving as the home for films that Perkins writes and directs, as well as those he produces for other filmmakers. Perkins will continue to work with producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Range. Neon will release the films theatrically in the U.S. and represent the international sales rights.
Earlier this year, Perkins directed “The Monkey,” an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King, which was another box office hit. “Longlegs” grossed a mighty $75 million domestically, while “The Monkey” earned a sizable $40 million. Neon will also release Perkins’ next film,...

The increased connection between the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards is a hot topic as the 78th festival arrives. You’ll find plenty about it elsewhere in TheWrap’s latest magazine issue, and with good reason: Last year’s festival premiered seven films that received a total of 30 nominations and won nine Oscars, including five for Palme d’Or and Best Picture winner “Anora.”
But let’s back up for a little history. The festival’s top prize was renamed the Palme d’Or in 1955, and its first winner under the new name was Delbert Mann’s romantic drama “Marty,” which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. That one-two punch wouldn’t happen again for another 64 years, until 2019’s “Parasite” did it, followed five years later by “Anora.”
Still, there’s always been some overlap between the two bodies, even though these are very different groups of voters.

American author Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" has received numerous adaptations since its initial publication in 1868, but one of the most unique comes from South Korea. Premiering in 2022, the K-drama version of "Little Women" uses Alcott's 19th century familial drama as more of a loose springboard for its thriller tale. The series has since become a worldwide hit in most territories, though not without attracting a fair amount of controversy for multiple incidents. Here is everything you need to know about the K-drama "Little Women" and what sparked the international backlash around the show.
The K-drama iteration of "Little Women" is set in present-day South Korea and follows the financially struggling Oh sisters. As opposed to Alcott's story, there are only three sisters in this series, with the two older sisters involved in a case that places their family in harm's way. This comes as the sisters receive a sizable inheritance,...

Despite best efforts to talk about movies at Cannes, with the sprawling official selection yet to be screened, at early press conferences festival director Thierry Fremaux and his Competition jury batted back questions about the state of the world today. Queries swung from Gerard Depardieu’s #MeToo conviction, to showing three films from Ukraine and banning Russia from the festival, which from its founding in 1939 was “predicated on liberty,” said Fremaux.
“People take risks to make films,” he said. “The most important thing is not someone’s safety, but making a film. The festival is political when the artists are political. Jafar Panahi [Iranian Competition entry ‘A Simple Accident’] is prepared to risk going to prison.”
As to the current political winds prevailing in America and elsewhere, Fremaux said, “The cinema requires a lot of funding. It is often the first target. Around the world we need to defend cinema.” As for President Donald Trump’s...

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24) is the festival’s 78th edition in France, and this year the premier international movie event features new films from the likes of Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Lynne Ramsay, Spike Lee, Joachim Trier, Christian Petzold, Kelly Reichardt, Bi Gan, Julia Ducournau, and many more auteurs and rising filmmakers. A few actors turned filmmakers are in the mix (and all three make our curtain-raiser), with Scarlett Johansson, Harris Dickinson, and Kristen Stewart all trying their hand behind the camera.
As previously announced, this year’s main competition jury president will be Juliette Binoche, who will oversee the choosing of the Palme d’Or and other festival awards alongside a jury yet to be announced. When I wrote my inaugural Critic’s Take some seven Cannes ago, it made sense to explore the apparent chasm between the films celebrated at cinema’s high temple — where austere and unsparing fare could feed the zeitgeist — and those that made inroads within the American industry, where hard auteurism had a tougher time cracking the mainstream, Palme d’Or or not.
Suffice it to say, I didn’t have a similar impetus this time around. How could I? Not when Cannes rides high on recent awards glories as festival honcho Thierry Frémaux relishes his kingmaker status; not when so many international distinctions have collapsed; and not when the very nature of a Palme d’Or has so strikingly shifted in the intervening decade.
Indeed, the cascading effects of streaming wars, labor unrest and widespread social shifts have fundamentally altered film culture. Since that first column, the theatrical market has continued to contract,...

There was time when studios thought premiering a film in Cannes in May could turn out to be a major hindrance to that movie’s Oscar chances nine months later. It was a logical assumption. Voters have short memories, and also, if the film doesn’t make a splash on the Croisette, it could be all over for its awards dreams. The fall festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and Toronto became much “safer” (financially and otherwise), and a more logical bet to launch an Oscar campaign, requiring only six months post-launch to keep the contender alive rather than nine. After all, the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Picture had matched only once since Marty won the first Palme in 1955.
That all changed in 2019, when Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner, South Korea’s Parasite, upset conventional thinking and went on to also triumph at the Oscars,...

Illustrations by Manshen Lo.In the opening sequence of Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 (2025), we meet our protagonist, Mickey Barnes, on the verge of his seventeenth death, anxiously awaiting a pack of putatively flesh-eating “creepers” at the bottom of a crevasse. His friend Timo, who rappels down only to retrieve Mickey’s expensive gear, treats Mickey’s impending death as nothing more than a laughable workplace incident. Mickey’s backstory is then revealed in a series of flashbacks, explaining the unique conditions of his immortality: how financial turmoil on Earth drove him to volunteer as an infinitely reproducible “expendable” for an outer-space expedition, meaning he’s been subjected to brutal human experiments that often culminate in his death and unceremonious rebirth via 3D printer.Timo’s nonchalant attitude, just one aspect of the cruelty Mickey has to endure, is typical of Bong’s penchant for shifting tonal registers to render comedy poignant and tragedy farcical.

Neon, the Oscar-winning studio behind “Anora” and “Parasite,” has purchased distribution rights to Cristian Mungiu’s “Fjord.” The family drama stars Sebastian Stan, fresh off his Oscar-nominated turn as a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice,” and Renate Reinsve, who won raves for her performance in “The Worst Person in the World.” Stan and Reinsve also starred together in 2024’s “A Different Man.”
The film follows the Gheorghiu family — Romanian father (Stan), Norwegian mother (Reinsve) — as they settle into new life in a remote Norwegian village, the mother’s birthplace. They quickly bond with the Halbergs, who live in the neighboring house near the bay, and, despite their very different upbringings, the children of both families soon become close friends. When the Gheorghius are suspected of disturbing behavior, their lives are thrown into chaos as they become the center of small-town scrutiny.

Oscar season is ready to start.
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday with a lineup that includes new movies from Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Richard Linklater, Spike Lee, Lynne Ramsay, and more of the world’s top auteurs.
In many ways, the Cannes Film Festival is more important than ever for the awards race. Over the last five years, multiple movies that premiered on the French Riviera have gone on to receive Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, including Oscar winners Parasite and Anora, and nominees Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Substance, and Emilia Pérez. With the 2025 lineup loaded with some highly anticipated titles, it would be considered an upset if at least one or two of the following movies failed to secure eventual Oscar bids in the top categories.

In the 24 hours after President Trump declared he would be putting 100 percent tariffs on all films produced in foreign lands, and with little clarity about what that even means, the gut reaction was to declare it a death sentence for independent films looking to get funding from international pre-sales. It seemed like a scary coincidence that the announcement came a week before the industry jetted off to France for Cannes, the biggest global film market of the year.

Filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho has delivered some of the most unique and visually interesting films in the past couple of decades. The South Korean director smoothly transitioned to making Hollywood blockbusters in the 2010s before returning home to make Parasite, which won him multiple Oscars.
However, before his global success with the neatly crafted intimate drama, Bong worked on a $50 million movie that was released directly on streaming. In an interview, the director reflected on the project and admitted that it deserved to be watched on the big screen. Here is what Bong Joon-Ho had to say about one of his most underrated movies.

For years, the Cannes Film Festival has been synonymous with glamour, prestige and cinematic artistry, with more than a few awards season darlings debuting there. But over the last decade, as Oscar hopefuls increasingly shifted their debuts to Venice, Telluride and Toronto, Cannes saw its influence on awards season diminish.
That’s no longer the case. In the last three years, Oscar best picture contenders (as well as international feature nominees) emerged from its lineup — most notably Palme d’Or winners “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) and “Anatomy of a Fall” (2023). At this year’s Oscars, Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Anora” took best pic, director and actress, while Oscar nominees “Flow,” which won for animated feature, “The Substance,” “The Apprentice” and “Emilia Pérez,” with Zoe Saldaña taking home best supporting actress (she and her co-stars collectively won acting kudos at Cannes as well), all launched on the Croisette.

With a Best Picture Oscar fresh on its mantle after the triumph of “Anora” in March, Neon is headed to its favorite festival, Cannes, riding high. The arthouse studio founded in 2017 has every reason to feel confident, having released the past five consecutive Palme d’Or winners, and arriving on the Croisette next week with four films in the official lineup: “Alpha” by Julia Ducournau, “Sentimental Value” by Joachim Trier, “Orwell” by Raoul Peck and “Splitsville” by Mike Cavino.
It’s natural for studio co-founder and CEO Tom Quinn to think about capitalizing on the moment, plot to expand his arthouse success and see his small but mighty endeavor financially headed in the direction of his rival A24, last valued at $3.5 billion.
But in a sign of complicated times for M&a in general and arthouse studios in particular, Neon remains in a nether space, with a valuation bankers and dealmakers put at only $200-$250 million.

In a fiery and unexpected statement, President Donald J. Trump has ignited an industry-wide firestorm by declaring that “The Movie Industry in America is Dying a very fast death.” Citing international incentives as a threat to Hollywood’s global dominance, Trump announced a sweeping proposal: a 100% tariff on any and all movies produced outside the United States. The move, framed as a national security issue, is already being compared to historical protectionist policies — but this time, it targets art, culture, and cinematic expression on a global scale.
President Trump’s statement regarding the movie industry
The Movie Industry in America is Dying a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat.

Korean studio Barunson E&a, which previously produced Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite, has unveiled an international partnership with Indonesian studio Imajinari, focused on remake rights.
Under the deal, Barunson E&a will handle international remake rights for three of Imajinari’s titles: hit horror-comedy Agak Laen, its upcoming sequel Agak Laen 2, and the dark comedy Tinggal Meninggal.

In a wide-ranging fireside chat with Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan at Mumbai’s World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (Waves) conference, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said that theatrical distribution and streaming can successfully coexist, particularly in India’s “fan-centric” entertainment ecosystem.
Sarandos stirred up controversy online by calling the movie theater model “outdated” in a recent interview, to which Rian Johnson responded saying that he wants the next “Knives Out” movie, “Wake Up Dead Man,” to be released in as many movie theaters as possible.
In Mumbai, Sarandos said, “I was asked recently in New York if I thought cinemas were outdated, and I said, for some people, for sure. I was being interviewed in Manhattan, there’s a movie theater on every corner – you could just walk and go see a movie. I grew up in a small town in Phoenix, Arizona… I had to drive 45 minutes to go see a movie.

Hollywood may dominate the global box office, but for true cinephiles, the real rite of passage begins with exploring non-English films, which are, by definition, international movies. Stories from countries/regions introduce us to different cultures and broaden our perspectives, offering a new way to see the world.

When Bong Joon-ho accepted the Academy Award for Best Director for Parasite, he famously said, “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”
From action and romance to slice-of-life genre, including animated ones, this list consists of some of the best non-English films that one must definitely watch before they die. Without further ado,...
