mgtow?
philneil19 October 2017
In-keeping with this season's theme the story arc adds misogyny and misandry to pit men against women.

Some might say that the birth of modern-day feminism originated in the 1960s, so the inclusion of historical crimes from that era was cleverly done: the attempted murder of Andy Warhol; the Zodiac murders.

There's a welcome return from Frances Conroy whose new character provides us with exposition and links to the past, becoming a catalyst for the upcoming war of the sexes.

ps. My summary title was originally 'MGTOW?' (capitals) but IMDb deemed that as shouting and wouldn't allow me to post... quite ironic given the subject matter and 'social justice warrior' theme.

Works as dark satire
scarlet812-593-11196722 November 2017
The first episode of this series about did me in & I wasn't sure I'd watch any more this time around, but I kept reading reviews of subsequent episodes, and things started to make sense. If I were watching this with any other view than that it is a very dark satire, I would hate it. The non-linear content in the past several episodes has been confusing at times, but seeing all the layers of manipulation Kai has laid down has been mind blowing. This particular episode had some bizarre history woven into it, with an amazing twist at the end.

S.C.U.M Stands For The Society Of Cutting Up Men
wandernn1-81-68327430 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We start out here with some serious DOIN IT in the backseat of a nice car. An apparent Andy Warhol flashback.... Evan Peters playing Warhol here. Who is this? Valerie Solanas I guess. She has it in for poor Andy.

June 3, 1968. Valerie has a gun. Valerie is also a horrible shot. But she finally hits Warhol.

+1 Star for the opening sequence flashback

Francis Conroy and Lena Dunham guest star in this episode. This ep. obviously an anti man ep. and how all men are bad. As is expected in anything with Dunham in it.

Apparently Valerie founded SCUM, the society for cutting up men. This Society apparently thrived in San Fransisco. Half Apes only understand violence, Valerie says. And SCUM, KILL MEN AND WOMEN THEY DID! They killed all the victims of the Zodiac killer! They framed the Zodiac !!!

But anyhow, Winter gets this lecture from Conroy. She goes back to KAI's cULT with a different attitude. aND WINTER AND CONROY get the rest of the women in the CULT and they knock out Harrison. Now how did Harrison get caught all by himself?? BS.

-1 Star for Harrison getting caught by himself by all the women in the CULT. Not believable at all.

And then IVY proceeds to cut up Harrison with a chain saw. And Beverly is there to cover the finding of Harrison's body. KAI sees this on the news. Is this according to KAI's plan?? Yes apparently it is. KAI and CONROY are watching the news brief together.

+1 Star for KAI and CONROY being in on it together.

Poinless, preachy, gender-baiting crap
Kast091 November 2017
The characters and their motivations were already spotty this season but this takes this crap to a whole new level. The preachy dialogue, oh god I can't even describe the dialogue in this episode.

This episode devolves into a forced new character telling a boring and completely unconvincing story that in the end is completely pointless and irrelevant to the story. The whole episode is like a radical feminist's wet dream basically repeating the most ridiculous stereotypes about men while separating men and women into factions. Even the gay guy suddenly becomes sexist Trump supporter #3543.

Well, I for one, am glad we have Hollywood to teach us about how we should treat women.

Not pointless
Jenstarling30 September 2019
It's unfortunate that so many reviewers have decreed this episode pointless or unnecessary. These reviews have been posted by people who clearly haven't watched the whole season. Yes, at this point in the narrative it might be difficult to understand how this storyline fits in, but roll with it. All the pieces come together by the end. You may or may not appreciate the final picture, but I assure you, there will be one.

Dissapointing
landerdevos17 August 2021
This was an unnecessary filler episode. We could have done without. I found myself wanting to skip through most of the episode. Only the ending is important.

What a brilliant episode!
o-jpg19 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This episode perfectly articulates all types of people we have seen so far in this season. I read the other review and the reviewer totally failed to see the whole idea behind Valerie Solanas. I think what many viewers failed to understand is that the VALERIE SOLANAS STORY WAS MADE UP! The 'girlfriend' was just one of Kai's tricks to anger the feminist, fill them with rage so they turn into killers. He used the old lady (Frances Conroy) to fill them up with lies about SCUM. Remember guys, this season has nothing supernatural and so, it does not mess with history (except Andy Warhol's death, which I think was also made up).

The old lady successfully angered the feminists by telling them lies about Valerie, The Zodiac Killer, and all the killings. And now, Kai really has the upper hand. Great episode. 10/10

Unncessasary

A lot of the episode feels like "filling material" and a monolog for Lena Dunham and "man-shaming". I cringed most of the time, and apologize on behalf of women...

One of the best episodes of the Season
maxvmsiqueira5 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was the episode that marked me this season of AHS. The intention was not to justify but to show that anything taken to extremes is dangerous. anything like religion or feminism. Lena's performance was impeccable and at one point I felt sorry for her character who suffered enough because of the patriarchy (which does not justify her actions).

Here we also have a connection with American Horror Story: Hotel. The zodiac killer was revealed to be one of the SCUM members. Ryan Murphy once again hit the dose of the episode. I feel sorry for those who did not like it. Many have not even come to watch and only speak ill of Lena Dunham who is a great actress.

A train wreck you can absolutely look away from
jwsco23 October 2017
We can all agree that every season of AHS (save for maybe the first three) has its ups and downs as well as a point where it sort of stalls out. None, however, have been so abrupt to plummet from compelling to unbearable as this season. I, for one, have enjoyed a season where the true horror has been motivated by human animosity rather than something supernatural-- until this episode.

People who have left positive reviews of this episode have suggested that those those who didn't like it simply didn't get it, or that they were blinded by personal feelings about the guest star, Lena Dunham. Let me put it this way: I've never reviewed something on IMDb and I felt compelled to write this to confirm that this episode is objectively bad.

First and foremost, the narrative structure is UNFORGIVABLE. The episode starts with its real- life inspiration, Valerie Solanas' failed attempt at assassinating Andy Warhol, which could have provided a good hook but was a little drawn out. For the remainder of the episode, the characters we've grown familiar with are only part of a frame tale for a new story told by a girlfriend of Solanas (Frances Conroy). The connection between these events is both tenuous and contrived. The story itself should have taken MAYBE one segment of the episode, but instead is drawn out and redundant. Because of the limited focus on the season's main characters, the central conflict of the episode seems entirely contrived as there's NO build- up. Similarly, the dubious motivations of the female characters (except maybe Beverly Hope) as well as their malleability to an influence other than Kai's completely undermines the cult dynamic crafted thus far.

Without giving too much away, I didn't find the twist at the end of the episode entirely predictable, but that's probably because I honestly just didn't care. While it did leave me with some questions, the ending mostly left me with a feeling of anxiety--NOT the kind that makes a horror series compelling, but the kind that stems from a feeling that this is the episode we will all point to as the moment the season went off the rails.

Honestly, I wish I could say the worst part of the episode was Lena's insufferable, self- indulgent attempt at acting, but even her cringe-worthy accent was eclipsed by the feeling that the rest of the season will be unsalvageable. I honestly don't know if I could sit through another episode so entirely irredeemable, and that's coming from someone who FINISHED season two of Scream Queens. GET IT TOGETHER RYAN MURPHY.

Ignore any harsh criticism of this episode
jpw0003-950-93560119 October 2017
Lena Dunham's performance is being widely panned, but if you dig deeper on any of these opinions, you find out that these people came into the episode with a strongly negative bias towards her. People who can't separate someone's personal life from their professional life. She did a fantastic job playing Valerie, and was by far the highlight of the episode. If you want a poor performance to point to, Frances Conroy was distractingly mediocre and melodramatic.

Lena Dunham is insufferable.
jillharrington20 July 2020
In an otherwise great season, Lena's whole story arc is so annoying mostly because she's so obnoxious. I know the character was probably exaggerated but she's a joke. The season could have done without this episode. It added nothing.

Overuse of satire
johnshaft4211 July 2018
We needed about 1/10 of Lena Dunham's role, although that's nothing against the actress. The storyline was an abrupt stop after the wonderful momentum of the previous episodes. Her story was boring, and would have been much effective had it been condensed.

Hot Garbage
holdosmuff26 September 2018
This episode was atrocious. The season started slow but began to build. The episode prior was great. I couldn't wait to see the fallout from the election. Then...this episode happened. Killed all build up. Lena Dunham pretty much plays herself to the 1000th degree. I understand her character was supposed to be "over the top" but it was unbearable to watch. Almost felt like the entire sub plot was there for woke points.

I am loving this season
Darlene501115 August 2022
I'm really loving the way this season has gone so far. First of all the Valerie Solanas stuff was great. This season is so fresh & funny & I can't understand how "fans" can't see the extremely clever horror wrapped up in this season. Give it a chance, you really might be surprised.

S7.E7 - SCVM [9/10]
panagiotis199310 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S7. E7) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 7 Episode 7 ''Valerie Solanas Died for Your Sins: Scvmbag''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. What's going on? Who are these characters? Im confused. Is this a filler episode? Why do we care about this Valerie Solanas character? That sucks. Nice to see Frances Conroy playing a role. The story of Valerie Solanas is not interesting at all. The Zodiac killer was SCVM killings? That's a decent twist. The SCVM members were all absolutely insane. It seems like all the women are now against Kai? This will be interesting. They killed Harrison? Hell no! That sucks, I like this character, why? Wait this whole SCVM thing was another trick by Kai? This guy is so evil, I love it. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 9/10.

Save your time and read an on-line synopsis. This wasn't just the most boring AHS episode... It was up there with the most boring episodes of any series I've watched. They could have condensed this story to 10 mins and added it to the beginning of S7:E8, and we wouldn't have missed a beat. Oh well... it's only 1 episode. And, no, Lena's performance wasn't especially noteworthy.

WHAT??
Matt10186 August 2020
I'm not sure what this was supposed to be, funny or serious? But it came across as beyond annoying. Even if it was supposed to be a satire, it was not even laughable how bad it was. Absolutely brilliant to have Conroy back, but made no sense, seemingly had no relevance to the overall plot of the series so far and was written absolutely atrociously.

Horrible Episode
peytonasmith0117 October 2017
All the work built up to this point, gone! The new character, Valerie Solanas felt forced and was horribly played by the 'actress,' Lena Dunham. The reasoning; Kai won the race for city council so he no longer needed the help of women. Valerie Solanas, whose only notable achievement was the attempted assassination of Andy Warhol, had a girlfriend that is still alive to tell her great story of triumph and prestige. That girlfriend managed to find the disgruntled women of the cult and tell them the story of Valerie. The entire episode was poorly constructed and felt as if it was pushing a narrative. Domestic terrorists are always to be looked up at for inspiration, at least in the opinion of the producers. It is sad to see a promising season ruin itself like this.

Worse than watching HRC try to preserve her crumbling infrastructure
sarahpike4154 October 2018
Lena Dunham is so predictable it's boring. I got dizzy from all the eye-rolling that was a reflex to the absurdly obvious attempts at comedy. Instead this was a vain attempt at catharsis for a bunch of whiny losers who don't understand the concept! This show was enjoyable in the beginning and season 6 was a fun story. But AHS has jumped the shark with this nonsense season.
