Simple movie, intelligent
federica-9490223 December 2018
Very french, slightly impossible. romantic plot but enjoyable and well made. Decent movie, lacks a little of realism and specifics in the story but then again it doesn't aim to be that kind of movie. Overall delivers his message well.

Bad seeds - what are they good for?
kosmasp13 July 2019
And in contrast to war, there is a different answer. If you didn't get my music reference don't worry, this is still about this movie and you should get what I'm trying to figure out with my question nevertheless. Can someone who has become a certain way (due to certain living standards, paths he or she took and other stuff) actually change? It's a main theme in this movie.

The movie may be predictable (although I had a moment of thinking of too many double crosses and coincidences), but it still is nice to watch. You have many different characters and all of them have certain flaws ... and you see them develop and overcome some of those flaws ... blossom to take the seed analogy ... but are the roots stronger or the mind too weak still? And where exactly would a good development go, if it happens?

Bad Seeds inserts the dawn of admirable roots to the viewers
shabin-sajan7 January 2019
Lovely blend of love , hatred, friendship, empathy can be perceived through this movie "Bad seeds" . Like the headline of Bad seen mentioned, it injects an inception of admirable and constructive roots to the audience which is exactly the converse of the title. It tells the story a boy - Wael . With the lessons and tricks which he experienced from his personal life is been introduced to the troubled teens in the support organization. The director Kheiron has captured the movie astonishingly while giving the audience a chance to compare Wael's past childhood life with present situations with those 6 teens. WOW it was indeed "SPLENDID" . All the actors were so good and apt in their roles with stunning performance from Kheiron as Wael. As it would've been easy for him as he was the hero and director (Just kidding) . Bravo Kheiron. P.S : Watched the movie in Netflix with English Dub & English Subtitles

Enough charm to pull it off
Chabrolfan13 February 2023
I will pretty much watch Catherine Deneuve in anything. I'm not sure this is the sharpest screenplay I've ever seen and there are cliches a-plenty, but there is enough charm to kick some life into it. The three main characters are played to perfection and the plot is genuinely heartwarming. I'd never heard of Kheiron before, but I don't think this is the last I will see of him. Credit also to some great performances from the young cast playing a group of pupils on the verge of throwing their lives away. I would definitely say to anybody, give it a try, it makes for an enjoyable enough hour and three-quarters.

BAD SEEDS, GOOD VIBES
BAD SEEDS, GOOD VIBES Once in a while a movie comes along that speaks to you. Sometimes, it's a big, important movie like The Godfather or quiet important movie like Howard's End.

And sometimes, it is just the right movie at the right time. In 1978, my wife and I went to see a movie and it was sold out, so we looked at what other movies we could see and for unknown reasons we selected a French comedy because I recognized one of the actor's name - Ugo Tognazzi. The movie was La Cage aux Folles. If you have never seen the original French movie, give yourself a New Year's present, see it.

Forty years later, lightning struck again, but this time surfing the innumerable choices on TV with my sister, looking for anything that wasn't about sadistic murderers or alien invasions. And, viola! There was Mauvaises Herbes or Bad Seeds, another French movie, this time taking place in Paris instead of Nice and on Netflix instead of a movie theatre. What drew us in was its female lead, Catherine Deneuve, looking every bit as beautiful as she has always been, but a beauty tempered by time and experience.

The story was simple - she and a thirty-ish Arab refugee, Wael, (Kheiron who also wrote and directed) have a neat scam that trades on people's prejudices about elderly woman and immigrants. When they get caught, it's not by the cops, but by an old male acquaintance of Deneuve's who threatens to turn them into the police unless they help him. He runs a summer program for 'bad seeds', six problem teens who are close to dropping out of school.

Wael becomes their teacher and his first challenge is to get the kids to speak - they have banned together, promising not to say a word. Wael solves this problem ingeniously then goes on to teach the wayward teens lessons in life.

Interspersed with this story is the story of a small boy in an unstated Arab country that is being torn apart by violence. His family is murdered and he has to live on the streets. How he does that and how he gets brought to an orphanage run by nuns is the parallel story from the boy's point of view.

Add into the mix a corrupt cop, a story of autumnal love, a neat trick to getting an attractive girl's phone number, six troubled but fascinating teens and just the right amount of menace and mayhem - and Viola!

Just as forty years ago, I was left with a warm glow that made me think not all is Trumpian gloom, that there is a way to find a life both fulfilling and sustainable, that the good, by adapting itself to this crooked world, can prevail.

Feel good, funny and witty
johnpierrepatrick21 March 2020
A really good movie. It takes place in a Parisian suburb but brings a different view on it than main movies. It and plays right its cards with humour - the duo Deneuve - Kheiron is splendid!, positive situations and care for its characters. Of course, it does not reinvent cinema codes and storytelling uses some 'by the book' and predictables means, but I had a great time.

A French feel-good movie, charming and fun.
port95627 February 2021
Netflix offered this to me and, as I sometimes do when up to the challenge, I jumped in without checking the IMDB rating. Needless to say, this viewing practice doesn't always work out well!

Bad Seeds opens with a petty criminal in a shopping center car park, and it was hard to think at that point that we the viewers could warm to the delinquent protagonist. However, that soon changes with the introduction of Monique (Catherine Deneuve) and Victor (André Dussollier). The story moves quickly to its main location, a school where Wael has to keep six school misfits occupied for a few days when they are suspended from class. From then on, it's a series of scenes, funny, sweet, touching, sad and dramatic in turn. The part where he is telling the teenagers a story is one of the cutest things I've seen in a while.

Spliced into all this were flashback scenes of the child orphan Wael in an unnamed Middle Eastern war zone. Whilst this could have been excluded to make a more linear story, these segments were always well done and brief enough not to slow the movie down too much.

The young actors playing the six very different troubled teenagers do a good job, and have some fun scenes. Their respective situations lead to multiple interconnected threads in the story-line which I thought were all engaging and made for a very satisfying last quarter hour.

Deneuve and Dussollier are adorable in their roles of estranged friends of mature years getting to know each other again. Kheiron as writer, director and lead actor is surely one to watch out for. This guy has talent.

An entertaining movie, enough that I watch it again with the English dub the following evening. (Fine, but it's better in French!) I would not be surprised to see a Hollywood remake.

One Of My Favourite Heartwarming Movies
xwdhkmryv6 August 2021
A heart-warming and humorous movie that doesn't shy away from the horrors and darkness of life but instead chooses to focus on the positives. Human connection, affection and love help these characters to find happiness together even if they have been through or are currently going through traumatic situations. An ultimately uplifting film - Bad Seeds is the best film that I have found accidentally!!

Sweet touch to heavy matters
dramacrds14 April 2021
As simples as that... You can laugh most of the time during the movie but through that it brings you conciseness to real heavy stuff in a torn world. War, misogyny, racism, fascism... you name it.

All with a spark in the eye of Wael. Simply amazing...

Unexpectedly moving!
tabithablue-4833213 July 2023
While studying for the B1 French Exam, my French teacher recommended this film, and I was tired of spending every evening studying irregular verbs, so I decided to drink a glass of Rose and watch it on Netflix.

I don't know what I was expecting, perhaps a slightly sappy comedy, but the opening scenes of war were heart-rending. The film alternates between high comedy, scenes from the character Wael's childhood in war, and warm interactions. It's touching, gritty, moving and funny all at once. Catherine Deneuve is excellent here, but also Kheiron, who I was not familiar with. Their chemistry is superb. The film also has a positive message, without whacking you over the head, something which is rare nowadays.

If you are learning French, I recommend seeing this in the original version.

Captivating Comedy: Mauvaises Herbes - A Hidden Gem with Heartwarming Characters and Timeless Wisdom
Gareth_Wong7 January 2024
Mauvaises Herbes" is a captivating French comedy that not only showcases the graceful aging of Catherine Deneuve but also excels in superb character building. The film unveils interesting and heartwarming character arcs for most of the cast, with Kheiron delivering a fantastically believable portrayal as a resourceful individual adept at navigating life's challenges. His ability to inspire, protect, and nurture the youth adds a layer of depth to the narrative. This hidden gem is a brilliant choice for family viewing, nearly reaching the esteemed territory of "Le Dîner de Cons (1998)." A truly must-watch, so carve out the time for this heartwarming and inspiring cinematic experience.
