Sleepy Russian Hollow
kosmasp8 June 2021
Of course there is more to it than just this being a "copy" of Sleepy Hollow (it isn't, and I generally have to rewatch that movie asap anyway)! But it has things that may feel like there are quite the few comparisons one can take. There are also references to many other Science Fiction movies and books.

Having said that, the movie does not shy away from being violent and sexy (though some may beg to differ on the latter). The acting is quite fine and the story is more than intriguing. The sound design and the cinematography more than live up to what the movie sets out to do - and anyone watching will not be dissapointed. The first of a trilogy - you kind of can feel it. And it is tough to say how you'll like it if you only watch one of those (this for example) ... you may feel it deserves more or less rating wise ...

Well,

I'm gonna be honest by saying that the subtitles for this film were difficult to understand. However, I watched it anyway, making my own conclusions as to what was going on and I liked it anyway.

I think the film was well made. The costuming and details, while not overly dramatic, were also well suited. From my translation of the film there is an interesting story going on here. I really hope to find better subtitles eventually.

If you enjoy period horror, you may very well like this. I'd tell you to check it out. As I mentioned, the English subtitles I found were awful but if you soldier through or have decent subtitles you'll be glad you checked it out. I'm about to check out the second film after I finish this review. Maybe that will tell you something. I'm curious as to what is going to happen next.

You should watch this movie!

I think, it's very interesting film for viewers, who like mystic. There are a lot of scary and frightening scenes. Film tells as many stories about different people, so the plot is difficult to understand. Protagonist is extremely unpredictable! His acting is very realistic. Other actors are not convincing, in my opinion. All characters are unusual. For example, Gogol, countess Elizabeth, Oksana. CGI and special effects aren't gripping, really bad:( In all, script is fantastic. The end doesn't reveal the mysteries to us, I will wait for the continuation. Who is the same villain horseman?

Horror story
naurimas-13 October 2017
The attempt to interpret life of the Russian writer Gogol paying attention to clerk's adventures in Russia, central Ukraine.

The plot is interesting, full of suspense related to mysterious and mystic murders.

The episodes of the film are related to jumps in time and links to dreams of the film's main hero.

Many humorous episodes related to Russian and Ukrainian lifestyle of the 19th century.

Something really cool
dashulka-7621719 April 2018
I watched this film at home, when TV3 was showing it during these winter holidays. And I REALLY liked it very much. It's not a usual film. It's a TV series shown in cinemas and, to be honest, that's a great idea. Sitting among all the people who came there to watch it too helps to create a unique atmosphere. All the actors are perfect for the roles, I liked Oleg Menshikov most of all))) I advice you to watch it))

Dark fantasy fun for literature lovers
darcysull11 August 2023
This series (which made up three films but somehow 8 episodes on TV) is well-made and a lot of fun. It will be especially enjoyable to anyone who has read Gogol's stories, as it incorporates elements and storylines from Viy and others (even The Nose). The look and feel is very much like Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Alexander Petrov as Gogol is very good. And if you love Russian literature and its tortured geniuses, watch for a couple of cameos from A. S. Pushkin! As of 2023, the whole series is still on Amazon with subtitles. The three-disc blu ray series of the films that I bought only has English subtitles on the second and third films.
