LARP?
wijnandbodrij14 January 2019
This looks like a bunch of LARP (Live Action Role Playing) enthousiasts pooled some money, and made a film together. If you ask me, they should have kept it to themselves for private viewing only. If you are a fantasy fan, don't waste your time with this,it's not worth 85 minutes of anyones life. I'll give it a 2 for the effort since I don't hand out a score of 1 easily.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

Seriously don't waste your time. The only good thing about this movie is a few of the bad guys have good makeup and the Princess is pretty. But still, big NOPE.

Dragons and guys in black spandex suits. Wait, what?...
paul_haakonsen27 July 2020
I eventually ended up sitting down to watch the 2018 fantasy movie titled "Dragon Kingdom", as I like fantasy sword and sorcery stuff. Granted, I had not heard about this 2018 movie from writers Aston Benoit and Ben Loyd-Holmes before sitting down in 2020 to watch it.

Notably, I must admit that I didn't really have much of any expectations for the movie, as this had pretty much come and gone well under the radar. And a great number of fantasy movies tend to be badly produced and having ludicrous props and costumes. But still, it might just happened that "Dragon Kingdom" was an entertaining movie, one that wasn't just going to be another failed fantasy movie.

So I sat down and watched "Dragon Kingdom". And I managed to get through the entire movie, just dozed off once or twice along the way.

While the storyline in the movie was actually decent enough, albeit pretty generic and stereotypical for a fantasy movie, then the movie suffered terribly from a lack of proper effects and costumes.

I mean, some of the costumes, especially those for the heroes and their allies was good. Some of the foes were adequate, although it was just painstakingly obvious that it was people wearing latex masks, as the masks lacked facial expressions and movement. And then there were the creatures in black, ghouls perhaps? I have no idea what the props department were thinking here; I mean, putting people in black spandex suits that weren't even form-fitted and then adding latex masks and odd plating on the back. It was just so obvious that it was just spandex suits, given the way the garments folded up when they moved. It was just abysmal to watch, and I wonder how this ever made it past the concept table.

Director Simon Wells didn't manage to present an overly impressive fantasy movie here with "Dragon Kingdom". But while overall a terrible movie, there were bits and odd pieces here and there that actually worked out quite well. Just a shame they drowned in the mediocrity of everything else.

I am rating "Dragon Kingdom" a mere three out of ten stars, because this was by no means an outstanding or particularly memorable fantasy movie.

Really hard to know who to blame!
SpecialWeirdo10129 December 2018
This movie have a lot of elements that should be able to make it a good experience; A basically ok story A cute princess in Rebecca Dyson-Smith A good king in Mike Mitchell A evil prince in Jon-Paul Gates A couple of knights in Ross O'Hennessy and Ben Loyd-Holmes A couple of female warriors in Zara Phythian and Jemma Moore A lot of weird evil fantasy creatures A bunch of undead zombie creatures A couple of dragons to top it off.

BUT still its something that is really missing here, not sure if its to blame a weak director or the lack of good script. After just a short time watching you start to feel bored and wonder when the amazing special effects will show up, (the poster promises that there are more dragons than in the combined Hobbit films) In the poster it also claims that the same special effect crew as the one in the Harry Potter movies are hired, but the film makers must have forgot to promise them money for their job, because there are "a bit difference" in the effects and how they looks.... Well there are a couple of dragons, and they are "not too bad" for a low budget movie. But they are not "OMG SO AMAZING" by far. The creatures have average costumes/makeup, blue coveralls and ski mask for many of them.....

The acting is a chapter on its own, its not good, its not average, its really close to bad. This could be to blame on a weak director, but I'm not really sure thats the only reason. For my untrained eye it seems that the actors don't have any chemistry with each others, and are "acting on autopilot". Of the actors I think the best are Jon-Paul Gates, playing the "evil prince" he clearly is good at being evil, but its only limited how much screen time he gets (and he is maybe only looking good because the others are sooooo bad)

The movie ends in a weird way, and my Christmas indulged brain is worried that the ending insinuate a follow up in the future some time. This can only be better than tis movie (crossing fingers), but I still hope it takes a couple of years, at least :)

If you have other interesting things to do, like watch paint dry, please consider that before watching this movie

A triumph for drama students
markburton7020 January 2019
This movie is living proof of what you can achieve with £1000, a dozen Halloween costumes off of ebay and a camera. I genuinely believe they snook into a couple of heritage sites before any visitors came in and quickly shot some scenes. Really don't bother.

Truly pathetic!
crusadermagnus25 January 2019
Ive been in several big budget films and a bunch of low budget and student films and of course watched thousands. Ive never seen worse.

As suggested elsewhere, they did in fact sneak into heritage reconstruction sites to film or got permission. I've been in that very village I believe.

They dont even bother to try to hide the 21st century signs though they do film from the back side of them but you can clearly see their shape and the modern bolts.

Even worse as they enter the first village look to the left of the screen as they pass the very small shed thats the size of a one man toll booth.

Plainly visible on the door is a modern calendar with a picture of a slice of pie on the top.

Then the circular seating area on their left as they enter is clearly made of planks sitting on modern concrete blocks.

Perhaps worse still. Look at any seem with farm animals and take not of the modern wire fencing.

It just gets worse and worse.

The acting is so incredibly lame, especially the pathetic troll called Prince Favian.

They should be ashamed they wasted their resources on this when 100 bucks of stage muslin could have fixed all the stuff I mentioned other than the acting.

Hilariously terrible.
Bepsicle12 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was just the worst movie I've ever laughed hysterically through!

Firstly, the sets. They made no effort to hide modern fixtures, such as fences and even warning signs on doors; even trying to hide plug sockets behind a candle at one point! It looked as though they had gone to a heritage site before the general public started arriving and just filmed away on a camcorder as quick as they could before any staff noticed!

The costumes. The zombies were just terribly made up, looking like a group of mates you'd find clubbing down town on Halloween weekend. The monsters had zips showing in the back of their costumes, and even gaps where their skin showed through!

The acting. One character in particular stands out here, Prince Favian played by Jon-Paul Gates. I was just lost for words at the worst acting I have ever witnessed in my life. A quick look at his imdb profile shows he has acted in other things, how this is possible is beyond me.

I wondered if the film makers had made it this bad on purpose, however it became clear that this is a serious movie. How they can claim it is from the same special effects team as Harry Potter is baffling.

I do actually recommend watching this movie, as I have not laughed so much in a long time!

Low budget mockbuster
hevig25 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The opening scene is an awful long sequence of shots of the protagonist group, entering a newly built and unused, but seemingly abandoned small village, and then in slow motion come a bunch of zombies running - quite clean, non-sentient but agile zombies, that apparently were waiting to ambush the heroes. Of course I noticed that everything was very new and pristine; the set, the props, the weapons, the costumes, the leather, even the rags . But when I saw the terrible poorly portrayed zombies, right there it was clear they botched this movie big time.

The rest of the movie is just as good as the zombies. Nothing makes sense, everything is so far off, that I fail to believe any of it. It's much like a LARP, with the difference that I would believe a good LARP but not this thin and soulless drivel in "Dark Kingdom".

Meanwhile I notice the background, bobbing up, down and sideways. Ah, so they were using lightweight handheld camera's, mounted on a gimbal. Much like you would use one to stabilise your phone when shooting video. They didn't use phones did they? OR DID THEY?

A bit later they encounter a dragon, looking kind of okay really. But wait, do I see grass flickering in and out of existence, at his toes? Fairly big goof here. The dragon reminds me much of those android apps, with which you can make a dinosaur walk across the table using AR. Must be something similar, at least no CGI like we are used to see in real movies.

At this point I find it very strange, that this was done - according to the movie poster - by the special effects team of Harry Potter and the executive producer of Game Of Thrones. I mean, really? REALLY? Man, they baited me good to want to watch this amateur, oversold mockbuster.

Next scene: they leave the village and the scout finds an army of zombies, nicely lined up side by side, waiting orderly but agitated, for the heroes to cross their path. Goof: a modern wire fence, topped with barbwire. Quite out of place. It seems that my estimate of the movie budget, should be adjusted downwards quite a bit here.

I guess if you are able to look past the amateur level of everything, and fantasy is your game, then you may well enjoy this. Or not.

One of the worst films I've watched this year.
XueHuaBingYu1 May 2019
What did I just watch? This film is like Zombie film in the old times. Not every zombie film is bad. I watched a lot of zombie and zombie-like films. But this one? It's terrible, so, I don't even know where to begin. The actings (especially, Elizabeth), actions, effects (especially, the dragon. I haven't seen a dragon like the one in this film. I was like it is even a dragon?), the costume (especially, Elizabeth and the King's costumes), the make-up, everything's in this film is totally bad.

Moreover, the story is unfinished. I think there will be another film. No matter what, based on this one, I guess it's no need to wait for it.

Overall is that everything is terrible. So, it's not even worth to watch. If you value your time and money, avoid this film.

Great waste of time
superp6428 January 2019
Is the acting good? no. Is it cheesy? Yes but, that it what makes it good. I saw this as a throwback to some of the truly horrid movies of the 80's and 90's. It is just good dumb fun and should not be judged on its artistic or cinematic quality of which there is very little. If you are bored and just want to kill some time just sit back, enjoy and have a good laugh.

OMG. AWFUL
teebear81715 July 2020
Rather than write a 1000-word diatribe detailing how horrible this movie is i will sum it up with this; this is one of the all-time worst movies ever made. horrific acting and writing. Ludicrous absurd Preposterous scenes one after another after another horribly bad fitting uniforms for the creatures. 125 pound women beating up 225 pound tough men and destroying massive grizzled creatures one after another like they are nothing. This was one of the most embarrassing offerings that has ever come out of Hollywood... they should be ashamed of themselves... this was 10 levels below horrible.

A candidate for worst film of all time
rjmwright3 April 2022
Let's start with the positives. There are some decent special effects. There has been some respectable fight choreography. Some of the top cast do their best with the execrable material, singling out Richard and George, and maybe Elizabeth for this. Even the King recovers some credit in the last scene.

But: the design, the ludicrous story, the feeble connects, the lowest of low budgets and some of the worst acting ever seen on the silver screen make this a near total waste of time. Prince Favian's character acts as if he is in a nativity play, but is conscious he's not the best thing in that nativity play. The story doesn't hang together for thirty seconds at a time. You can always forgive a low budget, but that is usually covered up by tight scripts and good acting. Not here. It's as if so much of the budget went on a couple of dragon scenes there wasn't any left for writers, designers, or actors.

Don't waste 90 minutes of your life on this.

Well it is at least better than Knights of the Damned....
...But that's faint praise indeed! There was no sequel advertised at the end of this one so whether the 3rd film in this trilogy ever sees the light of day is not looking good. First the good - . The Dragon was actually decently rendered in this one for an ultra low budget film. . The acting from all {bar Jon Paul Gates who's still stupefyingly awful} was significantly better than in the previous movie. . The monsters were pretty decent bar the blue man group orc rip offs - The Lizard King's Make-up was very good indeed. . The fight choreography though still generally bad was in places almost decent. Now the bad - . The writing is still sub-par even by Asylum standards! . Jon Paul Gates villainous Prince is as I've mentioned above really very bad indeed! . The second Katori warrior woman has not only changed actresses but seemingly changed characters - She's now called "Freya" and I don't see that name anywhere in the first film's credits! . The comic relief spearman is completely wasted - I'm sure he's meant to be a big part of the 3rd movie if that ever gets made but here and in the first movie he's basically pointless padding! . The film still suffers from slow pacing.

My final thoughts - I've seen a lot of bad fantasy movies from the 60s, 70s, 80s right up to Asylum's more recent efforts and this is by no means the worst...That award goes to "Knights of the Damned" and I'm sure most of the people who watched that refused to watch this which is a pity as it's actually much better and if you like low budget fantasy such as Hawk the Slayer, Deathstalker and DragonWars it comes off quite well comparatively. I've also noticed that most of the other reviews here not only don't mentions Knights of the Damned but seem to have not noticed that this is a sequel at all - Lucky them. I suggest they do NOT go back and take in the previous movie unless they're looking for a candidate for worst movie ever made!

The Dark Kingdom is an Evil Place
nogodnomasters28 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the second installment of the Simon Wells trilogy(?). There is a very brief introduction or recap of the first feature at the beginning. The kingdom is split with brother prince fighting against sister princess and the king is unaware. The evil prince has created a zombie army called "Fury". In order to escape the Fury our small group of good guys must enter the "Dark Kingdom." There are also a bunch of Amazon-like women who look like they used to be XFL cheerleaders.

This film was an improvement over the first one. The "bar" was more correctly called an "inn." All the Fury ran. It wasn't a combination of foot draggers and runners. The dialogue wasn't unintentionally funny as the first feature, but it wasn't great either. The costumes left a lot to be desired, especially the dyed long Johns, and I think they would have been better off with CG as the dragon wasn't too bad.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity. It does have a hot Asian chick from?

Here's how to fix this disaster!
the-nwo27 November 2019
I'm an avid Table Top RPG gamer. And I saw this movie as an ongoing TTRPG game. I had NO idea there was a movie before this. I just saw this at $10 at my local walmart and decided to get it on a whim. Boy oh boy what a treat was I in for!

I spent most of the beginning of the movie confused, asking myself if a movie this bad was actually the sequel of another movie.

Well, getting to the point of my review, I would cut EVERY SINGLE SCENE that doesn't include the princess and her knights. You'd think that would cut the run time significantly... Well yes

But I would add to that scenes of regular people sitting around the table as if they were running this "adventure" in a TTRPG (like D&D or Pathfinder), and they would comment on what's happening and have funny quips and discussions.

I guarantee that something like that would bring the score of this movie from a 2.5/10 all the way to a 5.5/10 easy!

Are they kidding with this?
fluffchop1 November 2021
This is just weak. It's like Conan The Destroyer level stuff from the 1980s. From the executive blah blah of Game of Thrones and the special effects team of Harry Potter?! So what? That's how they sell this on the cover? There must have been some reason for this being made? Lost a bet? A film student project perhaps? This movie is awful. I mean from the first scene you are just going are they kidding with this?

Put a (dragon) pin in it
kosmasp19 March 2021
Or is it an undead pin? I really am not quite sure what to call it. But since nothing has followed, let's hope it remains that way. Now I am cutting the movie some slack to say the least. I do know this is a low budget movie and it still maintains or rather can conjur up some charme.

I probably would have gone at least a 5 for costumes and all that (acting is not its strong suit, but this does not rely on that or rather has the emphasis on the fantastical and the action and make up department) ... but that weird ending really leaves one completely dissatissfied ... not sure what the thinking was behind that ... shame then - maybe the money ran out or maybe they were thinking they could have another run (sequel)? Whatever the case, most likely this will not be many peoples cup of tea

Kick-ass warrior women
hellholehorror28 December 2018
The Dark Kingdom looks great, indeed the light kingdom also has a beautiful style. Each area has its own visual style bringing the world to life with vibrant colours for the light kingdom or dank sombre tones for the valleys of The Dark Kingdom. Sound design is equally excellent in conveying the feeling of each area perfectly matched by the score. The sounds of all the different beasts roaring haunts my psyche. The story is well paced but apart from some light-hearted moments, it takes itself a little too seriously. Acting is a bit variable, some truly memorable performances mixed with some that are pretty laughable. Overall very enjoyable with great special effects, exciting fight scenes, kick-ass warrior women and some really awesome monsters. Dragon Kingdom is an unforgettable experience, it is explosive, magical and heart-poundingly exciting.

JoshKyallLee26 September 2019
It's easy to judge the film on it's budget & production value, but respect is due with what the cast & crew have created. Plus, some of the cast members were great; Especially Jon-Paul Gates as Prince Favian, he stood out in both this and it's prequel "Knights of the Damned"! Looking forward to what he comes out with next!

SwordBreaker1 July 2020
I saw 10 min of this and no no no I love B movies but this, this is not even a B it´s like a 0 movie.

Also man do they lie out of their behind in the trailer.

From the executive producer of game of thrones and the special effects team behind Harry potter.

I don´t believe the executive producer of game of thrones and the special effects team behind Harry potter would do such a bad movie I mean man I bet they got better job than this.
