Top-notch documentary that explains how and why it happened.
CK_Horwias2 March 2018
I have seen a number of documentaries about German history through the two World Wars, but this is the first one that actually reveals the intricate interpersonal relationships among a group of deranged individuals that lead a political party from relative obscurity into the driving force behind a national and global tragedy. The group comprising Hitler's 'inner circle' were all psychologically unbalanced and fanatical individuals. It is interesting to see how they were able to use the socio-economic circumstances of Germany to convince a substantial portion of the German population to adopt their arrogant and wicked philosophy. Bravo to the producers of this documentary for showing an original perspective on the events of history!

Excellent
kaynilsen26 May 2018
I just read Erik Larson's book "In the garden of beasts". The book tells you the story of William E. Dodd, american ambassador in Berlin from 1933 to 1937. Recommended! Combined with this series, it gives you a great view on what happened in Germany during that period, and we can only wonder why USA, GB and France didn't do something about it much earlier. They absolutely underestimated the situation. Hitler just wanted time to build his army.

William E. Dodd foresaw all this, and allthough he was criticized by many during that time because of what he said and wrote about what he thought would happen, he was later seen as a prophet they all should have listened to.

"Hitler's circle of evil" is an excellent documentary!

Excellent, enjoyable presentation based on primary sources
gaabib28 February 2018
I have to disagree respectfully with the other two reviews on this documentary series, I found it very good and enjoyed it.

This series presents the Nazi high command as people in a way that I had never seen in any previous documentary or book. The writers made good and frequent use of many primary source documents - diaries, letters, court transcripts, memos and other materials - so I would in no way class this as "propaganda." I think this series is an admirable work that probably represents many hours of research and puts together information I had never seen presented like this.

Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler, Goering, Speer and others were not inhuman monsters who just sprang up out of nothing, they were people who behaved monstrously, and neither were they supermen nor military geniuses. This documentary gives a detailed picture of who they were as individuals through how they interacted with each other, and how these monstrous, flawed humans destroyed themselves and their own country.

Interesting, enjoyable, somewhat repetitive.
Lothar_gr6 March 2018
This is a very good series, and very well presented. Shines a light on the inner circle of the mafia-like organization that was the Nazi regime and the inner fights between the senior members. Very interesting to see how these horrible people fought each other, hungry for power and/or survival, and still the show constantly reminds the viewer that these interesting characters, were also the monsters responsible for some of the worst crimes of the 20th century.

Only flaw I think is that it is a bit repetitive sometimes, since we have to be constantly reminded who was who. It is understandable of course that not everyone is a history buff who would always recognize historical figures, so that is excepted.

In general is a very good documentary series, highly recommended.

So you think you know the history of the Third Reich?
TheReelMovieMaven28 March 2018
This excellent historian-narrated docu-drama retells the history of the making of the Nazi party and the Third Reich by focusing on the interplay of the main characters at the center of it all: Hitler and his inner circle of Nazi leaders. For me, the series rates very highly among many others in the genre for the seamless use of archival photos and footage, rich and convincing dramatization, and constant narrative driven commentary by numerous historians. The use of music to heighten the drama is not too intrusive, and is actually effective. One can forgive the British historians for their obvious bias in describing Hitler and his henchmen as "evil" and "deranged" because they were! Yet, it is important to take in the lessons the narrative also presents (with less obvious emotional force) in how Germany's economic ruin after WWI and the colonial ambitions of other European powers at that time abetted the drive toward the rabid nationalism that Hitler promoted... lessons that America had taken in far better than Britain and other Allies following WWII with the brilliant Marshall Plan. Back to this production, though: Even if you are well familiar with the history of the Nazi party, Hitler's Circle of Evil is fascinating and even entertaining viewing.

You learn who was who
gregnowell-7443326 March 2018
I find the suggestions in some of the reviews that the Nazis were NOT irrational disturbing. There is one major argument to be made *for* their rationality: that the objectives of WWII were the same as WWI, and no one calls Kaiser and his crew irrational or nuts. On the other hand the military campaigns, in spite of the success against Poland and France, were nuts, as was the huge diversion of resources to the holocaust. Hitler's chief engineer Fritz Todt told him the Germans were going to lose in October 1941 and that he should negotiate a German withdrawal with Stalin. (whoops! sorry bout that!) But, even so, the series is explicit about the talents of some of these men: Goebbels was a capable orator, Goring seemed to have a better appreciation of grand strategy than most of the other party luminaries, Himmler had strong bureaucratic and organizational skills. They are really depicted as rational agents in thrall to an irrational ideology.

But what about the series? It is one of many possible ways to get into the vast and complicated topic that is WWII. The focus on domestic politics leaves out some important issues, such as the Soviet-German pact to divide Poland, but this series is not really about "total context." This series is about the personalities of the Nazi party. It helps you distinguish who was who, Goring from Goebbels, Himmler from Heydrich, Hesse, and so on. You don't get the generals. Just the major Nazi party figures.

If you watch this series with an extra resource, and every now and then pause the presentation to look up this or that, you will find it a useful way to get the feel of the Third Reich's major politicians. If you want a printed resource try the Oxford (single volume) encyclopedia of WWII. Or alternatively, take the time to use your tablet or phone to look up some of the topics that interest you on Wikipedia.

Almost any one of the WWII documentaries is *better*. For example, the famous "World at War" series from the 1970s. However, in that series, as you zip around battles and generals and politicians on both sides of the Atlantic and in Asia, you lose sight of the inner circle. The narrow focus of this series, in spite of its repetitive reality-show-ish format, is a very good first step into learning about the war and why these guys were hanged at Nuremberg (those that they could round up). As is often the case for such a complicated topic, every now and then something drops that I hadn't thought of, even though I have read a lot about WWII. For example, the series' argument that the plan to deport the Jews to Madagascar had to be shelved because the Germans lost the Battle of Britain (thus leaving the British with supremacy on the seas) was interesting. Very likely the Nazis would have gone ahead with extermination anyhow, but there are interconnections that I haven't made before. That Heydrich chaired the Wannsee conference was something else that had slipped my attention, even though I knew about the Wannsee conference. Goring's control of Prussia and its police/domestic espionage operation were news to me. The role of Martin Borman as a puppet master is also highlighted by the series, even though many treatments of the war tend to keep him in the background.

So all in all there's some good material in here. If this were the Michelin Guide I would give it a one star meaning "worth the trip." So I think this offers something to the WWII buff and it is also an interesting side trip if you find your regular viewing derailed by erratic shooting schedules. My main current series (such as Expanse, Babylon Berlin, and Game of Thrones) are all in suspension. If you like history and want to stream something that has a relatively short span from beginning to end this is a good option. The Germans lose WWII. Is that a spoiler?

AVOID THE BAD CRITICS,THIS IS AN EXCELLENT MINI SERIES.
notoriusgeorge26 January 2020
I've seen a lot of bad critics here and I wanna say something. This is not a documentary that focuses on WWII.Its mostly about the personalities of the people that Hitler had in his circle. Also it kind of showing you how it all started, and as repetitive as it is,cause it is,its very educational and actually did some great work and dig.You dont have to criticize everything that you see, like the costumes,if the buttons were untied, who cares. This is a great show and I highly recommend it to anyone that gets interested on how some people in nazi circle acted, rised up or how it all kind of started.Good work

Thorough look into the rise and fall of Nazi Germany
kosmasp5 August 2018
This is a documentary series that sheds a light on how the Nazis became the power and force and the leaders in Germany before the second World War. It also shines a light on how they feel apart during and espcially toward the end of that war. This is really well made and I guess you can have a problem with the show having actors reanacting certain situations, but this is the medium film and visual pointers are what this is about.

Of course it also uses old material wherever there is some available. It is really well mixed and there is gravitas to it all. It is narrated of course and very easy to follow. I guess if you are not too much into book reading or if you want to have it served to you visually (additionally to books), this is as good as it gets. The single episodes have an arc and a story they sort of finish within the whole arc and storyline, so you don't have to worry about having to binge watch it in one day. Although at around 50-60 minutes an episode you could do that on a weekend or some other free days you have at hand. It may also be something you can watch with kids and both can learn from this experience

Ok, but not great.
vetoatreides24 July 2019
This documentary makes a LOT of assumptions about what Goering, Himmler, Hess, Bormann, Speer or Goebbels might a have wanted, felt or said at any given moment while in reality we simply do not know. They are presented like they are participants in a Big Brother type reality show. Making alliances, plotting and betraying each other at any chance they get, apparently just to keep this documentary interesting.

It is very repetitive, many events are shown and explained more than once. There must be at least a hundred shots of Himmler sitting at a desk looking at papers or Bormann smoking.

The actors playing the inner circle during the 3 first episodes taking place in the 1920s were mostly spot on in terms of appearance, but once we move to the 1930-1940s, they are all replaced by much older actors that do not look at all like their real life counterparts. The actor playing Himmler at 45 looks like he's 65. They should have kept the same actor until the end and simply used some aging make-up.

The British historians (all but one) that are featured seem to revel in calling each members of the inner circle twisted, evil, mad, jealous, murderous, coward... OK we get it, they are nazis. The British empire, long before WWII and even a bit after, committed its share of atrocities all over Africa, Asia and Oceania. Sometimes it seems that these historians are just too happy to point fingers at nazis to deflect from their own history.

Fascinating look inside the most horrendous cautionary tale of the 20th century
joker-scar23 September 2018
This is an excellent doc on the inner workings of the Nazi top tier of characters. The re-enactments are well done, some of the actors don't look anything like their real life counter-parts but I guess they took what actors they could. Tons of little seen and rare footage. The historians give a balanced account of these horrible men in-the-making rather than the standard they are totally evil repugnant creatures stance seen in more unbiased documentaries that only serve to distance and turn-off the viewer and possibly taint the lessons needed to be learned by the Nazi era. This doc could easily have been named "Absolute Power corrupts..."

Long Winded Intro Into Hitler's Inner Circle
AudioFileZ25 March 2018
If you want to get a picture of the main men who along with Hitler destroyed Germany then this is it. What it really is an intersection of deranged patriotism and individual greed...plus some mental illness for good measure. The series does show how the utter humiliation of Germany after WWI set a stage for an most unlikely deluded person to come to power. The fact that this happened in a company of devious shrewd accomplices is explored. The men of Hitler's inner circle were more consumed with mis-guided greed and patriotism than their demonic leader is often times exposed. In short, the blame for history's greatest human atrocities and unprovoked war devastation had help. I think this is the real worth of this look at Hitler's inner circle of power.

This series is good. It could have been great if made more concise and not stretched for the ten episodes it obviously went for to make a seasonal TV series. When it looks into the minutia of how the Nazi's achieved power it does a give an insightful look to how events and a time came together. It often veers into repetitiveness, however, in trying to paint each player's paranoia and lust for power. It would have been better sticking to the fine details which were dropped like bread crumbs. In the end it seems quite topical if interesting. In the end you feel like much was left out like why the debacle of General Romel wasn't even mentioned or which important, if lesser insiders actually escaped. Even though for those interested in all things WWII this is a worthy series.

Engaging but flawed
patrickandrews-239887 March 2018
The format is British based academic historians jostling for camera space together with docudrama interpretations of the behaviour of Hitler and his cronies.

It felt as if the myriad historians were mimicking the battle for attention which their subjects had engaged in. Some of them had only one or two lines in the whole production.

Several assertions made by the narrator are actually still the subject of debate (eg Goering's naive offer to supply the 6th Army by air).

I found the dramatic components unconvincing, with actors being swapped as their 'characters' aged. Who cast that guy as Hess? Also, anyone in the German military wearing his cap sloppily and his top button undone would have been on a charge at once. This lack of attention to detail impairs the viewer's understanding of the regime, in my view.

Overall, despite my concerns, I found this series engaging and I'm sure it mirrors present day Whitehouse machinations.

Excellent overview of individuals behind Nazi Germany government
tuoppii22 May 2019
This series illustrates the formation of Nazi Germany and it's role in the World War II. As the title implies, the series revolves around the key players of the Nazi party and their chicanery against each other. This series takes in-depth analysis on the personalities and motives of these high-ranked Nazi officials whom kept gears turning. Excellent overview of individuals behind Nazi Germany government, which of course reflects the prevalent conception of humiliated Germany after the lost WW I.

Mind widening, brilliant approach.
philip-0019726 March 2019
"Hitlers inner circle had been forged in the ashes of the First World War. Missfits, war heroes - united by a sense of betrayal, a twisted ideology and a thirst for revenge. Only circumstance could have created the conditions for them to do what they did."

Brilliantl editing and a commitment to research makes, for the first time, the rationale behind Hitlers National Socialism understandable. Not acceptable but understandable. By, to a large extent, hiding the consequences and focusing on the decision making process - the dangers of letting madness get out of hand become vivid.

There's a further message here. Not just one from the past but one for the future: The democracy it took our ancestors blood, sweat, tears and centuries to build is fragile. It requires our daily care and committed custodianship to preserve. Presenting that notion is what propelles this series into greatness.

Great series regarding the heads of the third reich. One of the best I've ever seen. I learned a lot, especially how much competition and backstabbing there was between them. Definately recommended.

Nothing Academic about it

Worst documentary ever, nothing but one sided propoganda. Apparently everyone in Hitlers closer circle had an inferiority complex and the language used by the narrators is nothing less than insulting to all historians.

STAY AWAY.

Nazi soap-opera that brings fresh perspective on the old evergreen
filipkurekjr11 February 2021
There has been much written, filmed and said about the events described in the mini series, yet Hitler's Circle of Evil manages to create a new perspective to the story that began essentially a century ago.

Storytelling is mostly dynamic and I went through the series almost "in one breath". In the first couple of episodes one might even find oneself rooting for couple of the antagonists. At times the series is slightly repetitive and it feels like every single scene with character swap begins with "Himmler, the arch-antisemite" or "Martin Bormann, the master whisperer" and so on, which is exhausting after third and fourth time.

I had issues with the strikingly non lookalike cast for non-historical shots. Considering the fact the cast was used purely for visuals and did not require whole lot of acting it is little bit difficult to digest. The only exception was "second" older Himmler.

Also (as a Czech) I found the vague description of events around Operation Anthropoid (Heydrich's assassination) disconcerning. None of the assassins were named and the pronounciation of the two wiped out villages was completely wrong (and it is not because the names are unpronouncable in English). I might be biased here, I live just 6km away from one of the villages. But Georg Esler's unsuccessful assassination attempt at Bürgerbräukeller was more developed, so there is that.

Overall it is a good historical soap opera, if you will.

As good as it gets
ThisIsMovieReview21 March 2018
I am overly interested in the history of the 2. world war, and this documentary melted every other into one. Its cool to understand the struggle within the circle, and the personality traits for everyone involved.

I wish I had this series when i was a student, would have aced every history test about this subject. Easy to understand and told in a way that is interesting and easy to remember. (That is impressive, because there is a overwhelming amount to remember)

One thing i would loved was to get a answer to if the ufo Nazi documentary on youtube has any truth to it. (Probably not tho)

Good but repetitive and overly simplified
linkchameleon7 December 2019
Before watching this documentary, I knew very little about Hitler's inner circle aside from their names, what their jobs were, and what happened to them after the war. I did learn a lot more from watching this, but there were definitely problems with the production.

I agree with other reviewers that the show was way too repetitive. The filmmakers had enough material to fill 10 hour-long episodes without having to rehash the same facts over and over. They could have spent more time on people they gloss over, like Donitz. He shows up at the end and the viewers barely get a glimpse of him. Or they could have introduced other prominent Nazi leaders like Keitel and Ribbentrop who aren't mentioned at all.

This is less important, but I didn't like the change in actors halfway through the production. It was confusing and the "older" actors especially didn't look anything like the men they were portraying (most notably Hess and Göring). Why not keep the same actors and age them a bit with makeup? It was distracting.

Finally, the filmmakers overly simplify these men. We get it: Bormann was conniving. Himmler wanted to be a soldier. Hess was a bit of a looney. That's interesting and all, but in order to understand these evil men more fully, we need to delve deeply into their histories and characters rather than focusing on only one or two of their personality traits.

Really, I wanted more on what made these men who they were. How can we learn from history's mistakes if we don't fully understand the villains?

Overwrought and sensationalized, dubious facts
WildBullWriter1 March 2018
Poorly done, all in all. Highly repetitive, it could have been made with 5 episodes instead of 10. Sensationalized language, with the Brit narrator sounding more like a carnival pitchman than a serious narrator. Many of the facts seem insufficient to support the claims made. Obviously, Hitler's lieutenants were not nice people but the claim that they were evil because they were especially twisted and deranged is a shallow claim and not persuasive. In truth, the frightening thing about them is how "normal" they actually were, but that's a point of view these filmmakers completely fail to explore.

EXCELLENT
VIKTORS63331 May 2020
Reveals the rivalry and power struggles between the men AND woman closest to Hitler. Lots of new info and footage and good tension throughout. This series explains what drove these unsavoury characters from the start. Not preachy or over dramatic it explains a very important part of history in a fresh neutral way, these people actually THOUGHT they were doing the right thing. If you like explosions or gratuitous gory statistics this is not for you, this is for the history lovers.
