At the back corner of the barber shop, by the entrance to the tanning booth and basement, is a shelf with VHS videocassettes on it. It's best seen about halfway through in a close-up of Murphy after the gun is given to Sketchy and Skeezy so one can "mercy" the other. The two tapes on the left are the official releases of 3 Ninjas (1992) and Under Siege (1992). The others are home recordings of the Mark Madden Show, The Cable Guy (1996)/The Nutty Professor (1996), Rambone 2, Robotcop (with a "t"), Buffalo Bill's Super Bowl, Z Nation (self reference), Tickle Fight, and Gymnasties '56. Some of these titles are fictitious, or spoofs of real titles.
The line "he dies, she dies, everybody dies" is a quote from the animated movie Heavy Metal.
At about the half hour mark during Sketchy's lengthy soliloquy, the background music is the theme from the American spiritual "Glory Glory Hallelujah" aka "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".
A reference to "Black Summer" (an upcoming prequel series and part of the same universe as Z Nation) is mentioned in this episode.
Warren's use of a Route 66 road sign as a shield is a constant reference to "Route 66", the 1960-1964 TV series which was one long road trip much like a theme of Z Nation.
