Worth a watch
VisionofHope10 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the reviews for this movie here are negative. So from the perspective of someone who watched this for free and gave it a chance, here's a positive one.

The frequent fart jokes (coloured in green) in this are a bit much and there was one scene (mother singing 'Silent Night' when the crowd thinks the family is a band) I had to skip, because it was too cringey.

But since this movie is told with a visually pleasing package thanks to the character designs and environments, I can forgive some of the inappropriate humour. When the humour does manage to be good, it's memorable e.g one of the bats bathing in a fruit punch bowl and Fay thinking Imhotep introduced himself as Johnny Depp.

Lastly, heartfelt moments of the movie such as Emma remembering the happy moments the family had when they were monsters and her saying as a mother you have you have to take the good with the bad, made the movie feel refreshing enough that it felt worth my time.

Only worth seeing for the comedy occasionally
Horst_In_Translation1 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Happy Family" is a German/British co-production from 2017, so a very new release. This is an animated movie that runs for 90 minutes and was directed by Holger Tappe, one of Germany's more experienced animation filmmakers in the last decade. I liked some of his stuff, but other not so much, so it was all open for this one. The movie is based on a book by David Safier and he also worked on the screenplay here. This is the story of a not so happy family and their way to happiness that requires the inclusions of Dracula, an ancient witch, a megalomaniac pharaoh and a lot more absurd creatures like a group of models photo shooting in the desert. As a whole, I would divide the film into good and bad. The good was almost the entire first half and the comedy, the bad was almost the entire second half and the drama. There were funny moments here and there like the invisible vampire mirror scene early on or the hair dryer part near the end, just minor additions that were kinda fun. But there were also many shots at comedy that weren't working like when we randomly see a bunch of skulls in the desert that look like the protagonists' heads. And others. But the film's biggest weakness was perhaps the core plot about how they became a happy family. That one felt dramatic for the sake of it and resulted in several embarrassing moments that eventually cost the film a lot of credibility. The worst example was probably the daughter and honestly her transformation from a girl who cares all about looks into one that cares for inner values was really when the film hit rock-bottom, also with some truly pretentious quotes in the last 20 minutes. The boy's story was slightly better with finding out how scary looks will scare away people, but wait... Doesn't this exactly contradict the daughter's lesson? Well not exactly, but to some extent for sure. Daddy's story was well.. forgettable as he was running around like Dr. Mundo or Hulk for the entire film, but still gets his revelation at the end when he does not accept additional work from his boss in favor of spending quality time with his family. That came a bit out of nowhere admittedly as the character development wasn't really visible before. Oh yeah.. the farting references were kinda embarrassing too. As for the villain, it took a while for us to find out who the bad guy would be eventually, even if he appeared quickly early on. The film's biggest strength was definitely the animation. The film looked nice visually from start to finish really and this is the one area where it does deserve a better rating than the one it's getting here. But story-wise, it just wasn't good enough and got weaker by the minute in the second half while in the first 45 minutes there were only occasional weaknesses like the bizarre concert scene right at the start, but these were followed by superior stuff again. I see the likes of Hape Kerkeling and Oliver Kalkofe were in here. Kerkeling I didn't recognize at all, Kalkofe only through knowing he would be in it. The voice acting is definitely one of the better aspects here. But eventually it needs to be said that apart from the animation perhaps, this is nowhere near the level of Hotel Transylvania. A bit of a pity. I give Happy Family a thumbs-down as the happier they get the unhappier audiences get. Not recommended.

Movie worth a watch
damiensayshello26 March 2018
This movie is not worth the 1 & 2 star ratings. It is not one of the best animated movies, but I have seen worse.

The animation is really good. There's some interesting character designs and beautiful environments.

There's some funny bits across the movie (not the farting jokes! - it was so overused) & the drama is a little over the top at times, but overall it is just a fun movie.

What is going on with the voices
dobie-399258 March 2018
I'm watching it right now on Netflix with my kids and I started Googling to see if this was originally in another language, but it doesn't appear so. The animation to match mouth movement and voice acting is sooooo bad. At first I was surprised it wasn't too low-budget looking (I don't think this went to theaters in the US), but they need to tune up this aspect. My kids will watch almost anything so they seem unfazed, but really poor quality.

Not even fit for a kids movie.
freddyfazbearentco28 November 2017
I don't think I've ever seen a worse movie in a cinema. I watch loads of movies and saying this means a lot from me. I'm extremely dismissive of movie mistakes and plot-holes, but this, oh boy. It's loud, it's obnoxious, it has scenes that go on for too long. This movie has no plot, no structure no nothing. Yes, I understand this is a kids movie, but at least have the movie make sense. In fact, the movie is so terrible, in the first 30 minutes or so I left because I couldn't stand it anymore.

TL;DR, don't go to see this movie, not even with your children, they will most likely not like it either.

Sent the kid to sleep
elinavarro5 March 2018
Quite possibly the worst film I've ever had the misfortune of sitting through. Even the vocal talents of Jason Isaacs and Celia Imrie couldn't save it.

Appalling script, cast sound as though they'd be more excited to read the phone book, rehashed storyline, endless fart jokes.

One kid liked the bats, the other fell asleep after 30mins.

If you want a decent monster movie - stick with the likes of Hotel Transylvania and avoid this like the plague.

Suggest Sky stick with their monstrous prices and leave the monster movies to the experts.

Don't let the bad ruin the good.
Nadia_2210 July 2018
What I learned from the reviews is that I should never skip a movie just because people hate it or didn't understand the movie or didn't even watch it but they left a negative review and now the movie should be thrown away in junk. I really like this movie and I actually enjoyed watching it , even if you think this movie isn't suitable for the kids, it still teaches us that no matter what life throws at us and how many problems we have, we must stick together and don't let anything ruin our little family, after all, we're a family and we're the happiest around our family members, even when we have problems and even when we're not getting along pretty well - we should NOT GIVE UP on our FAMILY ! If you ask me , that's a pretty valuable lesson which should be learned even before people decide to have their own ...

I wasted my time watching this.
CristianFishbeck27 January 2019
I thought this movie was going to be a fun, thrilling adventure. Well I thought wrong. This movie is loaded with boredom. It over uses the same joke. And it was just not fitting. Terrible. Just terrible. Don't waste your time like I did.

Good family morals and great humour
derek-453-41092828 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Many reviews have stated that the subject matter is unsuitable for children. But actually the film contains some wonderful morals:

1. Parents should have a good work/life balance; family comes first 2. Beauty isn't everything and fades eventually; people should love you for who you are, not how you look 3. Children should obey their parents and parents shouldn't shout and nag at their children 4. Don't let anyone bully you, and don't become a bully and lower yourself to their level 5. Being smart is useful; don't dum yourself down 6. Families can drift apart because of minor differences and misunderstandings, but small changes can bring family members together

The story keeps the film together and comedy is really good as is the animation. It's a kids movie and not the most original, however it's entertaining enough and kids will love it, plus take the opportunity to teach them some morals!

Cartoon that is not suitable for children according to my personal view
lightpower-5023322 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert From lady trying hard to avoid cheating on her hasband to a kid call her dad "farting ideot". Maybe it is just me but do i really want my children to have such ideas or language in the back of their head .... Nope

I really think it is okay to watch 1 time with adults but please don't take your children to it, the little things affect their personalty or behavior and this movie shouldn't be a part of it.

If i am too harsh i am sorry , just wanted to send warnings

Thanks

Not the best, but not terrible
daria-4911422 July 2018
Came up on Netflic, figured we'do give it a try. An adult and 9 year old watched it. Sat through the whole thing. We both agreed it was a cute movie. We'do probably watch again.

Note: The 9 year old stopped watching animated movies years ago, so her willingness to watch again says a lot.

UNhappy, monstrous life, Euro-rival animation offering
Bofsensai18 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Being fond of the animated genre and so always particularly, ah, well, 'happy' to find those that try to break away from the Stateside (you know the usual suspects) ubiquitous monopolistic styling presentations, so that this first offering by European / German based 'Sky' is most certainly to be welcomed; yet sadly it falls into two approaches / appreciation:

first, particularly as its renderings are really quite competitively sumptuous
  • the initial entry into Drac's lair and its styling, with latterly a dance scene therein between Drac and lead character Emma, is worth the price/time of watching alone - reminiscent (in homage sorta way?) of the famed Disney Beauty and the Beast ballroom one.

But then, well, oh dear ...

The fact that along with adapting his own book, the author David Schaffer then got five (five - it's only a children's film!) writers involved soon sticks out like the sore thumb as that, that the 'Prince of Darkness' in this eventually gets as the precursor to his demise, to soon point out / warn, this storyline seems to have been cobbled together with a contempt for its (young) target audience, to not be able to twig its many jarring developments.

Firstly, most glaringly, is that, in obviously setting out to competitively get the interest of a target (lucrative?) Stateside audience, its initial settings are there in the States (NYCity backgrounds) for its bickering family - nothing odd about that for dramatic drive; but it has then utilised - (presumably as cheaper?) - UK based voice talents: as such, well, why on earth couldn't at least one of those writers have come up with some conceit that could cover that such another grating sore thumb which they surely knew would immediately irritate the Stateside target audience: if you set it in the U.S., they gotta have US accents! Instead all the family characters speak in clearly cut glass Brit accents! (Throw in a line somewhere about them being on an exchange or worktrip - or something!?)

And so to those voicing talents, which is always an essential element to enjoy such animations;

Emily Watson voicing lead Mom (Emma) does imbue her with a delightful exasperated matriarchal gravitas (belying Emily's comparable age in passing); but the should be knockabout comic relief fabulous Nick Frost is just wasted with a father character who more or less has absolutely nothing to say other than mumblings - (and BTW which character is then portrayed with a thoroughly overused flatulence problem = yep, the de rigueur fart joke! Which again seems to betray the lack of child awareness scripting - one reference is enough for them, guys - really!): plus Celia Imrie's usually clipped tone breathlessness appears to be all but lost / unrecognisble = wasted too: Although at least Drac is presented as smooth, charming oily character (by Jason Issacs - although even that in a sort of (deliberate?) Charles Dance like pastiche almost ..)

To which lines they then deliver belies the (probably?) non native scripting, as on the whole there is a dearth of clever / humorous lines usually always knowingly thrown into the screenplay to keep the older, ah, 'kids' watching along with the target youngsters' audience (only the J. Depp one stood out to me - but so just like another of those 'sore thumbs' in so doing!)

Which then leads to the whole basis on which the story arc is set: that the family is so dysfunctional = 'unhappy' (it's alternative and/or original title) that the Mother would be open to being wooed by a charmer whose phone just happened to suddenly get crossed lined to - da, da , dahhh - Dracula, Transylvania ... well, it's kids animation, so suspension of disbelief is a taken, huh ...

OK: but then to the animation stylings, competitively competent as it is, seems as if occasionally as though the studio had gotten hold of a trick or two, and then can't let it go: e.g. the chase scene with Baba Yega magic amulet use 'poof' disappear ability just goes on too long (into the water and creatures there? Why?) but which then does - finally - get them to UK where all their accents properly belong (although, watch it: German animators put all the flags upside down! Possibly, deliberate anti-Brexit snub, there?)

And for the otherwise incongruously suddenly turning up Imhotep, his sand and bug transformations renditions are delightful.

And, incidentally the (spot the) obvious 3D effects looked as though they were probably impressive (minion like vampire bats hurled towards the screen), but unfortunately since this hardly got any theatrical release then they are all lost / wasted.

And so onto get to the (plot spoiler warning ...!) happy ever Drac defeat, so to reunite the family 'happily' (ever after) together: even here, so, what's with the seemingly totally unconnected, yet proves so decisive, snowflake in a globe nemesis Mcguffin? Where's that come from then? Why does Drac even have (got) it (from)..? - surely can't be more lazy scriptwriting? (There were SIX of 'em!)

Ah well, since nevertheless, overall, visually, still undeniably quite enjoyable (Mom in her 'Draculina' style especially): but to absorb that, for a new troupe on the animation block, scriptwise* and pacing disappointingly let this down a great deal. (So Paranorman, Hotel Transylvania franchise et al need not to worry just yet ...)

*I note that one was a Catherine 'JUNK' .. well, now, would be unfair to infer = rather say no more there ...

Oh Sky, what have you done
mattgriffin-586373 March 2018
I love Sky. They are innovative and provide great entertainment usually. Not here though. This is a shocker of a film. The voice acting from all involved is diabolical. Nothing makes sense. Why is everyone English in New York???? Just terrible. No story, nothing funny, just horrendous. Avoid!!!!!!!!!!

Horrible family film
hws724 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Horrible film. A mother who contemplates cheating on her husband. A husband who is a complete idiot. Kids who talk to their parents like they are dogs. The daughter actually acts like she hates her whole family. For anyone who thinks this has good moral values... no it doesn't.

Where to start?
olimatthews7 December 2018
This film is awful. The lip/voice sync is so frustrating it makes it unwatchable. The story line is non existent. The characters are so one dimensional they aren't likeable. The same ones are used over and over again. They weren't funny the first time.

It's a fun movie for kids that isn't too horrible for adults
mellkleckerism17 October 2019
Honestly it's a good "Halloween time" movie to add as a filler. Considering it's originally in the German the, the lip sync isn't too terrible and there's not much that can be done about it (there's plenty of foreign dubbed movies on Netflix) The animation isn't too terrible either! Hoodwinked has academy acclaimed award winning voice actors and the animation on that was in the pits.

It's like everybody working on the film hated themselves and wanted the audience to suffer. Emily Watson's voice acting was astoundingly poor.

My son has asked to watch this movie several times, on our streaming service. There are definitely a lot of valid points made in other reviews. However, the majority of these go right over his head. I could pick this movie apart, but ultimately it does what it's meant to. Entertain.

I love this movie! I have become a fan of Dracula.
revolt_of_tirnaill22 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I am Japanese. My English may be wrong, but please understand.

I saw "Monster Family" in an airplane for overseas business trip. (I saw it after a serious masterpiece war movie) It's very entertaining and it is a fun movie just watching. Animation is a feeling that the staff understands and makes. For example, even a small gesture is wonderful!

It is a family movie, but this is also a love romance movie with a villain. It may be that I have watched it with a different viewpoint with other people. But that is a high score. I am fascinated by the situation of romance between Emma and Dracula! But Emma has a family and she is a married woman. Conflict of her heart.

Ah! ! What a beautiful movie for a villain lover! ! Dracula, appearing in line with the first Toccata song, is too cool ...! ! And he also has a comedy scene properly. it's the best!

You who likes vampires and villains there! I will seriously recommend this movie!!

Not the best ever, but I liked it
shiny_mae198412 September 2018
Slow to start, boring, and I was thinking "what the heck is this movie." Monster Family doesn't pick up until after the family is transformed. There is a lot of adult humor. Dracula trying to woo a married woman is one of the reasons I wonder if this was never meant to be a "kids" movie. The description of this movie is wrong. Dracula is the one who makes the "evil witch" curse the family.

The movie had some humor and some heartfelt moments and of course some good old fashioned life lessons. Always be yourself; it doesn't matter what people think of you, beauty doesn't last...etc.

The voice acting sounds a bit off as if these are actors who have never done much voice acting.

Watch this if you want a terrible message to your children
brunette_blueye9 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I dont often hate movies. But I hated this one for the following reasons:

1. The father is a stereotypical male father image. 2. Fart jokes are not funny. 3. Mum is inhappy. Mum therefore considers running away with a stranger and leaving her husband and children. 4. It simply isnt funny. It tries hard to be but fails. 5. The novie has no real plot line. Or at least one thats very weak and non sensical. Everyrhing that happened I just found myself rolling my eyes at. Ill go back to point 2 -it sends a terrible message to kids. Mine are 5 and enjoyed it annoyingly but hey, theyre 5. Theyll learn.

Dont waste your time, this is almost as bad as postman pat the movie.
