Violence & Gore

  • Very realistic scene showing a mother aggressively choking her crying five month old baby with the bottom of a wooden coat hanger.
  • Violence and murder depicted in nearly episode is often graphic and bloody. People are shown being shot and killed by guns, knives slashing throats and other body parts, other unexpected items are used for acts of violence against people. A woman is shown tied to a bed and breaks a drinking glass to cut the ropes tying her to the bed. The glass causes a large bloody mess that covers most of her face and a conveniently white shirt so the blood is very noticeable.
  • Season 2 contains much more violence than season 1. It happens more often and is usually brutal and bloody.
  • Season 2 episode 1 shows a woman stabbing a man in the mouth with an ice cream scooper. She repeatedly continues and we see the man chocking on his own blood for 30 seconds. This whole scene is entirely shown for the whole duration.
  • Season 2 includes some fairly intense violence including: a man having an ice cream scoop jammed repeatedly into the back of his throat as he slowly and graphically dies, a man has syringes jammed into his eye sockets - killing him, a man falls and is impaled on a wooden spike, a woman is stabbed in the stomach and bleeds all over the floor, some characters are shot, a man has his face smashed with a mallet, and several other instances of intense violence.
  • Mother and daughter arguing and daughter tries to flee. Mother tackles daughter into a lake where the daughter tries to escape and the mother is shown drowning her daughter. Mother reads a letter from the daughter and is shown revving her with CPR. They quickly make up like nothing ever happened.

Profanity

  • An occasional Shit and fuck. Also an occasional vulgar reference too.
  • Season 2 has strong pervasive language throughout.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One of the main characters is addicted to opiates

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Very realistic scene of a mother aggressively choking her crying five month old baby with the bottom of a wooden coat hanger. It is not implied off-camera.
  • The entire series has a constant dark and unsettling atmosphere. There are no jump scares like your typical horror show, instead, the show uses a more psychological approach to create a sense of Impending doom.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is seen driving his car into a lake, while having a rope around his neck. There is a brief shot of the radio being splattered with blood but not much else. A man hallucinates seeing dead guards all over Shawshank. While there is a hefty amount of blood around each body, they are seen from security cameras, making the deaths a little less graphic. In episode 4 a man goes on a killing spree and kills multiple guards around Shawshank. This is all seen from lower quality security cameras, so it is very hard to make out any graphic wounds. The man also gets shot shortly after, his body seen with a little blood; this is offscreen, however you see the main character covered in his blood. All together the violence is more or less played for scares and to disturb the viewer. (Also, as a quick note, these are not all the deaths in the show's five episodes, these are all deaths that are spoilers. And to also add on to this, even though many people die in Season 1, most of the actual killings are offscreen.)
  • Two people are murdered in a disturbing and brutal scene in which the aftermath is shown in a lingering, bloody, and mutilated fashion. (Deleted. Personal opinions about ratings are not appropriate for the Parents Guide.)
