Originally called "Niihau", is a film about a Native Hawaiian war hero, Ben Kanahele. Based on the Battle of Niihau, when a Japanese pilot crash-lands after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Ni'ihau, the westernmost of the Hawaiian Islands, is privately owned by the Robinson family, descendants of a Scottish plantation owner who bought the island from King Kamehameha V for $10,000 in gold in 1864. In 1941, it was owned by Aylmer Robinson, a Harvard graduate fluent in the Hawaiian language. He and his family ruled Ni'ihau, although they actually lived on nearby Kaua'i, with Aylmer making weekly visits to Ni'ihau by boat. The island had about 140 residents at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor and most were native Hawaiians. Entry to the island required Robinson's permission, rarely given except to kin of native Ni'ihauans. The only non-Native residents were Ishimatsu Shintani, Hawaiian-born Nisei Yoshio Harada and his wife Irene Harada, all of Japanese ancestry and all of whom were involved in the incident depicted in this movie.
