Twin Suns
lassegalsgaard29 January 2020
It's funny. I'd read a lot of things about this episode: some saying that it was great, while other considered it a waste of time. I was expecting something a little more divisive for myself, but personally, I found this episode to be one of the best I've ever seen. Would I have liked a longer confrontation between Obi-Wan and Maul? Sure, but I thought that what we got was a lot more emotional than anything else could have been. I wasn't sure about an episode simply dedicated to Ezra on Tatooine, but it actually turned out to be a solid and enjoyable ride, and as the ending drew near, it became a great one. While the Season 2 finale is still the best I've seen from this series, this is definitely just beneath it. It had a lot of emotions and a lot of things that gave some great development, especially to Ezra who heard some words here that I believed he needed to hear from someone who wasn't Kanan. There was also a big chance to break continuity with this episode, but they managed to keep it closed off and not ruin anything that the original trilogy set up, which I thought was simply great.

Stunning Episode to Join the Prequels and Originals
tlfirth18 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
From the moment Maul spoke at the beginning of the episode, you could tell this was going to be an unconventional episode of Rebels, reinforced by the fact that the opening theme was quiet and unobtrusive. Since the first moment we saw Darth Maul appear on screen in the Phantom Menace, he was an instant favourite, and with his painful and symbolic resurrection, he has had a grudge against Kenobi like no other. But neither have been victorious, especially now that Maul was completely neutral in the Galaxy (he's neither for the Rebels or the Empire).

So, this one-on-one confrontation has been in the air for a while, but it seems the writers have finally decided to choose an ending - and it's more than fitting. Whilst Maul has been venting anger for most of his life, Obi-Wan is complacent with the fact that the Force guides him to wisdom. He has learnt so many thing during his lifetime, that he has the courage to stand up against Maul personally to protect the one mission he has remaining - which is protect Luke.

Combining all these elements together, you have an overarching story with tremendous depth in the Star Wars Universe. Even to the point, where after Obi-Wan has easily dealt with Maul, the ex- Sith concedes that Luke will hopefully avenge him for the Sith's betrayal. Despite the fact Ezra took centre-stage for most of the episode, it was all about Obi-Wan and his transition from Jedi Master to protector of the "New Hope".

Aside from this cleverly fleshed-out continuity, the rest of the episode was filled with gorgeous imagery, melancholy music and a nostalgic ending that has an emotional resonance unlike anything seen on this show before. It's almost as if, along with Rogue One last year, that Star Wars is tightening the loops around its countless stories and showing the audience how deeply nuanced it is.

In completion, Star Wars is enjoying a golden age of story-telling, wherein passionate writers are filling in the gaps of an almost perfect saga. Well done!

Very fitting and character focused rather than action driven

Warning: Spoilers
I felt this was a very well written episode. Yes it still could have been a little better, but I never expect perfect. My only problem was with Ezra, he did what he always does. Acts rashly but with good intentions. His role in this story was merely to give a reason for it to be told in this series at all.

Other than that, they stayed very true to Alec Guinness' Ben Kenobi. He was every bit the calm, wise old Jedi we love from New Hope. He was by far the best part of this episode.

And as for how they decided to end Maul's story, I LOVED it! Both his and Obi-Wan's stories need to come to a close at around the same time, since Maul's only reason for living any more was to have a final confrontation with his old foe. And we knew it had to end with Obi-Wan killing him, because continuity and all that. All that aside, it made sense to have the fight end so quickly. They are both old and tired. Obi-Wan is stronger in the force by being at peace with the hope he has in Luke and his purpose in protecting him, while Maul has been worn down by so much anger and hatred, that he has nothing else to live for. It wasn't supposed to be a huge showdown, that would have been far more ridiculous, and more fitting for the Clone Wars than the present time. Maul needed closure, and he got it. Obi-Wan continues to live his role as Luke's protector.

I love you Maul!

Warning: Spoilers
Deserved more than 9.4 for this remarkable episode in animated history. About the duel, We have seen more than enough fight between Obi-wan and Maul, in Clone Wars. But then again, everyone wants the fight, come on, this was groundbreaking even without it. Stop rating it low and feel the depth of the story. This episode wasn't just a special one. It was the tale of a great character in Star Wars. I mean, it was epic, alright. It was mighty, it was tearful. This one took me right off to watch A New Hope again. Sam Witwer, you made him a legendary character. Damn, Dave nailed it again.

Spine Tingling!
A_Kind_Of_CineMagic21 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spine tingling magical feelings of watching Star Wars as a little kid were brought flooding back by this episode.

Ezra is drawn to Tatooine by the holocron, seeking to save Obi Wan Kenobi from Maul but of course it is a trick by Maul to draw Obi Wan out of hiding so he can gain his revenge.

The feeling of the new hero Ezra going to Tatooine where the saga all began for fans is wonderful and we get Sandpeople, sandstorms, droids in the wilderness before finally the great moment arrives where Obi Wan appears.

It is all done beautifully and I was astounded how well series regular actor Stephen Stanton does imitating Alec Guiness' voice as the older Obi Wan. He already does well as Grand Moff Tarkin but his Obi Wan is superb and really adds to the magic.

Maul is such a superb character too and having his sinister presence threading through the episode is so cool. Then we get the epic moment where he appears to face Obi Wan. It gave me goose bumps.

It is bravely written and created to give a different climactic scene from what we expect and I found it very powerful and suitable. What a great arc that was from Clone Wars through to this moment. It is class.

Marvelous episode with an ending that sent shivers down my spine.

My rating: 10/10.

One of the most best episodes of all the Star Wars shows. The fight between Obi-Wan and Maul, though short, was intense and filled with so much character.

Goosebumps

Warning: Spoilers
Like the last episodes on Season 2, this one gave me goosebumps!

SPOILERS Loved seeing Obi Wan (quite the accurate voice impression), and loved how short the fight between him and Maul was, wouldn't have expected less from Master Kenobi. Great decision making by the directors. Beautiful cinematic compositions throughout most shots in the desert too!

Also found it was weird, but welcoming, to have that last fight without Ezra witnessing it, even if he drove most of the dramatic tension of the episode. Those changes in POV are worth the while when we are given something as cool as Kenobi back in action.

Not what you wanted, but solid nonetheless
FormerlyDoh1118 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
***includes mild spoilers***

The hype has been real. The final showdown between Maul and Obi Wan Kenobi is finally at hand.

The first three quarters of the episode is Rebels at its best. After hearing rumblings from the holocron in Kanan's room, seeing the recording of Obi Wan after Order 66 and also hearing Maul's voice, Ezra decides to try and find Obi Wan to help him in his impending confrontation with Maul. But in reality, Maul is subtly (to Ezra) manipulating him to draw Kenobi out of hiding.

Hera warns Ezra that he shouldn't leave, and that he is too valuable in the plan to liberate Lothal. Ezra lies to her, saying he'll stay, but later departs for the desert planet.

From there, Ezra arrives on Tattooine and a desperate fight for survival for Ezra ensues as the path to finding Obi Wan is the equivalency of finding a needle in a desert haystack.

The episode does a good job of reestablishing Maul's madness with a fine monologue from Maul as he wanders through the desert, searching for Kenobi. The story is well told, too. We see Maul and Ezra struggle through the unforgiving and brutal conditions. Be it from the native inhabitants, the elements itself, or their own mental detriments, this portion of the episode is incredibly well done by co-writer/director Dave Filoni and co-writer Henry GIlroy.

Obi Wan is perfectly voiced by Stephen Stanton. His Alec Guiness Obi Wan performance is 1:1. There really is no difference here between Stanton and Guiness. It's quite impeccable and brings a sense of authenticity to the character. Obi Wan is also perfectly written. Every word he says is perfectly aligned with his mannerisms and diction from the original trilogy.

The final showdown, however, is actually perfectly done. I initially wanted (and you expect) a more drawn out fight, but the way Filoni shoots the action is Kurasowa-esque and while may you would have liked to see Obi-Wan actually impale Maul, you realize the actual battle was their interplay before the fight, and the fight is simply the epilogue. Take off your fan boy goggles and you realize this is the only way this fight could have been resolved.

The resolution for Ezra is more of a disappointment and is entirely unjustified given Hera's instruction. Her reaction upon his return is not in character and is disappointing from a story standpoint, as is the rest of the Ghost crew's reaction. It makes her statement in the show's first act null, as there is no consequence to Ezra's unsanctioned departure that surely put planning for the liberation of Lothal at risk.

Really, it's the resolution of Ezra's part of the story here that keeps this episode from being among the masterful that have been delivered in the Clone Wars/Rebels era, however, it comes really, really close and gives Darth Maul a proper coda that the too soon dispatched character most certainly deserved.

Spoiler alert!! The best episode yet in my opinion Warning: Spoilers
I will never give anything a full 10 because that would mean its perfect. To be honest you have to see the movies, and clone wars and rebels to really get where some of the characters is to this date to really understand everything that happens.

The episode starts up with Two Twin Suns, a desert and a tired Maul wandering. He still search for Obi-Wan Kenobi which has drawn him towards Tantooin. He is only living for the possibility to get his revenge. But if you have followed any of the other episodes, you would also have this feeling that I've got. I always got the feeling that he is really tired of everything, and really just wants everything to end.

In the other end, Ezra wakes up, hearing a voice calling. He goes up from bed and follows the voice and found the Jedi Holocron is activated with the warning from Obi-Wan Kenobi to all Jedi-knights after Order 66 was activated. And the Sith Holocron activates as well, so Ezra knows that Kenobi is in danger from Maul.

Ezra want to go search for Kenobi because he thinks he is the one that would end the Sith and the Empire, but Captain Sundulla says no, and tells Ezra that he is needed elsewhere. Ezra pretends to agree with her, but sneaks out himself by stealing a fighter. He doesn't know that Chopper also in secret got onto the fighter.

Many people here have been arguing and asking about how Ezra knew that Tantooin was the place where he could find Kenobi? This people didn't really watch the whole episode in my remark. Because if they did, they would probably put one and one together and make that two, that he was guided by the holocrons. Which is shown closer when he wonders onto the Desertplanet itself. So there is not a real plot-hole here at all.

We all already knows that Kenobi is alive and well, and somehow SOmething happens between Maul and Kenobi. I just think the ending is perfect. Not anti-climactic at all. But Ezra get saved by Kenobi, and get to know that he is in the wrong place and actually is needed somewhere else. And suddenly Ezra understands that he was fooled there by Maul.

So when Maul shows up, you could already tell that Maul isn't going to be the winner this time around. To be honest, as I said in the beginning I never thought the Maul was there to win. I several episode I got the feeling that Mauls intentions is more or less to die. So there for I think this ending is just right.

When Maul gets to know Kenobi is guarding the (new)chosen one, he accepts his death and that he will get his revenge even if he is dead. And Mauls makes an attacked without any heart into it, and gets fatally hurt by Kenobi.

Its not a bad death, it was (as a Klingon from Star Trek would say) a good day to die. Because he knew that he would get his revenge strangely from his foe that suddenly is his closest friend. So wow.... This is really whats Star Wars is all about. I even think I would have been disappointed if this last show-down would be longer than 3 seconds and a Clone Waresque light-swords-fight. That would kinda be out of Mauls character and Kenobis at this that time of this story.

Perfectly Written, Perfectly Executed.

Twin Suns acts as a perfect send off to Maul and a satisfying path to closure for Maul and Obi-Wan, ending their years-long feud. This is one of Rebels' finest, and shows Filoni's amazing storytelling and Sam Witwer's astounding acting.

Twinning!

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was beautifully done.

I guess I could see where some may have been disappointed after waiting well over a year for this confrontation. The meeting between Ben and Maul is short-lived. I think it was perfectly handled though.

Kenobi is getting very old at this point. He has some fight left on him, but he's getting close to that period where he's ready to finally give himself up to the force and pass on. Of course he's going to protect Luke, but he isn't going to be foolish and give in to his feelings. His actions all made sense to me. I'm surprised so many people think he feels out of character here. His voice, look and writing all felt perfect to me.

The duel doesn't even happen. Maul goes out of his way for revenge and it leads him further into darkness before eventually getting him killed. Everyone dealing with absolutes and the dark side is destined for failure. Poor Maul probably knew this too. His finally likes spoken to Kenobi really made the episode for me.

I liked Ezra's minimal contribution to the episode. It isn't pointless, he is literally the reason Maul finds Kenobi. He knows what's going to happen after Kenobi sends him on his way. Sure, it seems like maybe he's only here to bridge Kenobi to Maul in a show that's about Rebels. I do not care. It was done so well I did not care.

This was also a perfect reminder as to why Kenobi couldn't join the rebellion. He has to keep Luke safe at all costs.

This was really well animated, directed, acted and, yes, executed. Not everything Marvel or Star Wars related has to end on a big battle.

The last scene was a masterpiece. No one will be able to change my mind about that.

Warning: Spoilers
Everyone's complaining cause the fight was too short. Not gonna lie... I DO NOT WANNA SEE OLD-ASS OBI WAN GO MR. MIYAGI ALL OVER DARTH MAUL'S ASS. Sure I was excited, but when they finally ignited their lightsabers, I kinda cringed because I was worried that I would see an overdrawn action scene. Instead, we got a short, powerful, and subtle ending to this rivalry. It is amazing to see how much they've grown in just about 3 seconds of movement. Obi wan changed his stance while maul's dumb ass decided to stick with his nature, and this reflects their overall character. So yeah, this is the only episode in rebels along with twilight of the apprentice that i consider great

What a waste of time :(

Warning: Spoilers
God! I felt so stupid after watching this episode. The rematch of the century was to be shown. The final fight between Obi wan and Maul, it was teased for quite some time, many trailers were dropping, finally the episode was released and... NOTHING! The first half is a build-up to what would come, the hype was there from the beginning, we meet Obi wan, he has a little conversation with Ezra, then Maul comes, they talk a little and then the "fight" starts and before you know it, Maul's dead. That's it, THAT'S IT! 3 seconds, WE ONLY GET 3 SECONDS OF "FIGHTING"! I only give this episode 4 stars because of the ending, we kinda see little Luke and hear "Binary Sunset". All in all, the episode was hell of a disappointment, it almost felt like a filler.

Not quite enough to justify Kenobi
Fluke_Skywalker22 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Ezra sneaks off to Tatooine in search of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but finds he's not the only one trying to find the Jed Master.

I've always had mixed feelings about exploring what happens with Obi-Wan in the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. On the one hand, it's reasonable to assume he didn't sit around his hovel counting grains of sand for twenty years, and the idea of more time spent with this beloved character is appealing. On the other hand, there's always a danger of demystifying him and his journey, robbing that moment in A New Hope where he appears again of some of its power. But this being a cartoon, it's not quite the same as them doing a live action anthology film (Which has long been rumored, and Ewan McGregor has said as recently as this week that he's game for), so...

If you're expecting an epic showdown between old foes Kenobi and Maul, prepare to be disappointed. The clash here is over within seconds. But nevertheless, there's some drama to be mined and mine it they do. Stephen Stanton, who voices Obi-Wan, is particularly good, expertly evoking the late Alec Guinness. His brief interactions with Ezra and then Maul are poignant and the final moments will likely give fans a chill. Not all it could have been, and if you're going to bring in Kenobi, you need to have a better reason than a simple ratings grab, which this felt like.

Utter Disappointment
thesecludedempire18 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Well what can i say..... i spent almost a year in high anticipation for this episode and honestly the developers could not have given us a more rushed and disappointing confrontation between two of the most iconic characters with a massive grudge.

The whole episode felt rushed with 80% of it focused on ezra walking around the desert, seeing pointless visions that made very little contribution to the plot.

When it finally got to obi wan, i was expecting some great dialog between him and ezra, but no...... a few pointless comments before sending him on his way, basically a complete waste of his time even going in the first place. He already knew about maul coming, so ezras presence basically just led maul there in the first place. Seems to me just a poor thought through way to weave ezra into the story and it failed miserably.

Now the fight....... this is the most rubbish i have ever seen in the history of lightsaber duels (Obi wan vs Vader in episode 4 was more stunning to watch) 3 seconds............ and maul is dead. No amazing fight with acrobatics and amazing lightsaber duelling techniques, 3 seconds and maul is dead.... What the hell is this?!

And then to top it all off, obi wan and maul are talking like best friends in the final scene before he dies, an obvious mirror of Luke and vader from episode 6, but this dosen't work with mortal enemies.

Darth maul was one of the best characters in the prequels and now Disney has made his death probably one of the most pathetic ones in the whole saga.

This episode had so much potential to be great and like usual Disney has let us all down and made it into an epic fail

So thanks for again ruining star wars.

As others have mentioned, the fight is unimpressive. But what bugged me most is that Ezra never was told what planet to find Obi-Wan Kenobi on. He just randomly picked the right one. It's also never explained how Obi-Wan Kenobi knew who Ezra was. So how did they know? filling space filling space

A big highway to nothing
dregj20 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Ezra starts getting premonitions again and instead of remembering the last few times this happened ,when it was a trap set by maul,he instead goes off half cocked yet again. It's never established how he suddenly knows that his previous vague vision of twin suns is now suddenly narrowed down to tatooine?? He announces he's going there to save obi wan kenobi (how he suddenly knows his hiding place is another mystery)nobody seems to question how he knows this all this from some whispered holocron voice.Worse still nobody is surprised by what should be a stunning revelation. Its like they've all watched the star wars trilogy and were just playing dumb for dramas sake. He goes there has a few pointless adventures and meets obi wan who tells him to go as maul arrives. The two combatants then spend about two minutes staring at each other across a camp fire. After a spectacularly anti climatic one second fight scene it ends .Thank god for that
