Spoilers for "Barry" follow.
Despite how dark and dramatic the show has progressively become "Barry" is a comedy series. The latest episode of season 4, "you're charming," featured a gag that the series has used before with very funny results.
Last season, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) helped put Barry (Bill Hader) behind bars with a sting operation. Despite a promise not to talk to the media, Gene couldn't resist the spotlight. In the previous episode, "bestest place on the earth," he dug his own grave by talking with Vanity Fair reporter Lon O'Neil (Patrick Fischler). Worse, Gene didn't settle for a simple interview -- he performed a one-man show recounting his entire relationship with Barry and forgot to request anonymity until after the performance was over.
In "you're charming," the Los Angeles D.A. tells Gene and his agent Tom (Fred Melamed) about Barry cutting a deal with the FBI for immunity.

The Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week of November 5 through November 11 has yielded best-ever results for the two artists at the top: Summer Walker at number-one with her second studio album “Still Over It” and legendary Swedish pop group Abba at number-two with their long-awaited comeback album “Voyage.” Read more about this week’s chart at Billboard.com.
“Still Over It” debuted on top with 166,000 equivalent album units based on a combination of album sales, individual track sales, and online streams. That improves on the launched of her debut studio album “Over It,” which started at number-two with 134,000 units in 2019. But after two years “Over It” is still a mainstay on the Billboard 200 and has racked up 2.5 million units to date.

When Beyoncé Knowles-Carter announced her latest visual album “Black is King” in June, she explained that the Disney Plus film was “meant to celebrate the breadth and beauty of Black ancestry.”
“The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey. … I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our Real history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books,” Knowles-Carter wrote on social media.
The 24-time Grammy winner created the visual album to accompany “The Gift,” the soundtrack she curated for 2019’s “The Lion King.” Knowles-Carter voiced the adult version of lioness Nala in the photo-real adaptation of the animated classic.

In what’s shaping up to be the strangest weekend yet since the coronavirus outbreak forced American theaters to close, the biggest release is Beyoncé’s visual album, “Black Is King,” a visionary feature-length companion to her 2019 album, in the tradition of “Lemonade.”
A number of studio movies — including Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” — had tentatively planted their flag on July 31, only to delay amid the latest spike of infections. But the strategy is changing lately, as Russell Crowe road-rage thriller “Unhinged” moves forward with its release … abroad. Now “Tenet” and other titles are weighing a similar international-first strategy.
That leaves U.S. audiences with two very different options: Buy a ticket and fly abroad to see the tentpoles you’re missing (assuming foreign nations let Americans enter the country), or make do with the virtual releases that remain. In some cases, films are still pushing for limited theatrical releases among...

In one extended sequence of the 2017 documentary “Angry, White, and American,” Black British journalist Gary Younge faces off with alt-right leader Richard Spencer, who, at one point, says, “Look at the life of any African American living in the United States. It’s far better than any African living in Africa.”
Translation: Slavery was good. His words are a thinly veiled justification for Black bondage and a warning to Black Americans to be grateful for how good they’ve had it here. Spencer is saying that by enslaving Black Africans and bringing them to the New World back in the 1600s, White Americans and Europeans were saving them from “a world of dread and fear,” to quote the overarching presentation of the entire African continent offered by Band Aid in the 1984 charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”
Beyoncé Knowles’ latest project, “Black Is King,” could double as a delayed response to such nonsense.

Black Is King (Beyoncé)
Four years ago, Beyoncé dropped the film version of Lemonade, which brought together directors Kahlil Joseph, Jonas Åkerlund, Mark Romanek, Melina Matsoukas, and more to deliver a visual album that, like many of her works, had an immense cultural impact. She is now returning with Black Is King, a film in production for an entire year that reimagines the tale of The Lion King through the perspective of the Black experience. Now available on Disney+, we imagine it’ll be the most-watched film of the weekend.

The idea behind the film “Black Is King,” which premiered on Disney+ on July 31, is “to shift the global perception of the word Black,” according to its director and star, Beyoncé.
But it’s unlikely that too many fans will flock to Disney+ for altered semantics. Yes, “Black Is King” is an extravagant piece of empowerment, a riff on “The Lion King” that is set in Africa and continually points to the beauty and power of the Black experience. But this visual feast based on Beyoncé’s 2019 album “The Lion King: The Gift” finds its moments of glory in the strength of its images, which are more arresting than the story or the subtext.
And if the idea of “Black Is King” is to uncover something new in the concept of Blackness, it is also to restate something about Beyoncé herself — namely, that anything she tackles will be special. She...

Beyoncé’s Black Is King has arrived on Disney Plus. Her third visual album following 2013’s Beyoncé and 2016’s Lemonade, the 85-minute film is a companion piece to The Gift, Beyonce’s hand-crafted, all-star soundtrack to the 2019 photorealistic remake of The Lion King. And it is, by far, her most elaborate visual work yet.

The superstar’s Lion King-inspired visual album is a feast for the eyes, celebrating the beauty and richness of African cultures with emotion and power
Beyoncé’s second visual album after Lemonade is truly worth the wait. An accompaniment to her Lion King album The Gift, to describe Black Is King as just a visual album is an understatement – it is a film in and of itself. Black Is King is a global contemporary reimagining of the story of The Lion King across several countries and three continents, following a human Simba’s journey with Beyoncé as an ethereal narrator and guide. The film uses sound clips from The Lion King to assist with transitions that shape the story, and all of the protagonists from the film are recreated as real-life characters with more personality and substance. The hyenas are a devilish biker gang, and Mood 4 Eva depicts life...

Draped in mystery and expectations since the Disney+ project was announced last month, the Queen Bey orchestrated visual album is …well, rather excellent and exciting on various fronts. Kasi Lemmons’ new film, “Harriet,” depicts Harriet Tubman — the leader of the Underground Railroad and freer of slaves — as all that, but with an extra element. As played by Cynthia Erivo in an action-heavy role, she’s close to a superhero. And Lemmons intended it that way. “That was the mission,” she says. “Adventure and superheroism is inherent in the story — we didn’t want to impose it on the story. This young woman who was very small and very strong and very fast and very, very brave. That’s what we wanted to bring.”
This Harriet, in other words, looks less like the figure known from photographs taken nearer the end of life than like Erivo as the compact physical dynamo of “Widows.” The story moves fleetly, depicting both Tubman’s gift for evasion and the visions that spurred her on. “She’s kind of there and kind of not,...

The Notebook is covering Tiff with an on-going correspondence between critics Fernando F. Croce, Kelley Dong, and editor Daniel Kasman.WavesDear Danny and Fern, Maybe I should admit now that this year's festival has been fully filtered through the fact that only a day before it began, I finally saw Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way (1993). The Bronx-set film, which follows reformed gangster Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) and his dream of love and freedom, is a wrenching double exposure: Thrashing scenes of gunfights and shady deals lose their opacity beneath the romance of Carlito and his lover Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), who are saving up to afford a future together. But soon worlds clash, and a decision must be made fast; between the two frames, one of love and another of death, where shall Carlito go? How kind it is that De Palma takes the position of a real friend,...

“That was 22 years ago,” she said. “I’ve spent most of my time in the 22 years trying to get movies made. And I’m very proud that I’ve gotten to make five movies. But I spend 80% of my time trying to get movies made.”
“You have to really want it,” Lemmons said when asked to give advice to aspiring young women directors. “If there’s anything else you can do,...

Beyonce is never not making music headlines, whether it’s with her Emmy-nominated concert documentary “Homecoming” and its accompanying live album or with her contributions to “The Lion King” as a singer, voice actor, songwriter and music producer. Her little sister Solange often flies under the radar with her more idiosyncratic brand of R&b, but this year she may be the Knowles sibling with the better chance at Grammys, at least according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.
As of this writing Solange’s fourth studio album, “When I Get Home,” ranks among the likely Grammy nominees for Album of the Year. We currently place it sixth with 20/1 odds, and there will be eight nominees in the category since the recording academy expanded the general field races starting with the 2019 awards earlier this year. It debuted at number-seven on the Billboard 200 albums chart when it dropped in March,...

Beyonce (“Homecoming“) and Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) made history with their Emmy nominations this year. By earning bids as directors they became the first black women in Primetime Emmy history to receive multiple directing noms in their careers. And if they prevail they would be the first ever to win.
“Homecoming” is Beyonce’s music documentary about the making of her 2018 Coachella concert inspired by historically black colleges and universities. It has six total Emmy nominations, four of which are for Beyonce herself: Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) as a producer as well as Best Variety Special Writing, Best Variety Special Directing and Best Music Direction. That brings her to a career total of eight Emmy nominations; one of her previous bids was for Best Variety Special Directing for her “Lemonade” visual album in 2016, but she has yet to win in any category.

The protagonists of “Queen & Slim” are branded as the “black Bonnie & Clyde” after going on the run after killing a racist police officer in an act of self-defense. It’s a catchy name as seen in the new trailer for the film, which was released on Wednesday, but the movie’s director, Melina Matsoukas, doesn’t think that’s the best comparison.
In a special preview event to the press last week, Matsoukas said that black love stories are often compared to other white archetypes. But rather than turn stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith into anti-heroes as in “Bonnie & Clyde,” the story of “Queen & Slim” is meant to be universal with its themes of love, capital punishment, police brutality and the unity of the country.

While The Little Mermaid's Ariel might be the youngest of seven singing mermaids, it turns out Halle Bailey, the future live-action Ariel, is the younger sister of just one singing superstar, Chloe Bailey. But, much like the original Disney film, Halle and her sister have been harmonizing together for some time now (in their sister pop-r&b duo Chloe x Halle and not under the sea).
Chloe and Halle were born in Atlanta and raised in Los Angeles. Chloe, who is 21, is just about two years older than Halle. They rose to fame when they made their YouTube debut at the ages of 13 and 11 with their own covers of pop songs. Even more amazing? Their first post was a cover of Beyoncé's "Best Thing I Never Had." It was actually their cover of Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts" that skyrocketed their names to the top of the YouTube charts. As a...

Before touching down on what Beyoncé has called her “love letter to Africa,” it’s important to see what may have brought her to the mother of mankind, with its wide vistas and sonic planes, for “The Gift” in the first place — beyond, of course, voicing Nala in the film and whatever international marketing tie-ins are to come. Despite “The Lion King’s” own Disney-fied trajectory from animated film to quasi-live-action travelogue, the journey that Bey has taken is one of her own design, with a little help from her family.
“Lemonade” was Beyoncé’s strutting, wrathful, Southern-inspired declaration of spite and self-worth in the face of a cheating man; “Homecoming,” a nod to her Houston roots, marching anthems and healing; “Everything is Love,” her and Jay-Z’s continental breakfast free-for-all dedicated to reunion and spending sprees. After all that, “The Lion King: The Gift” is one for her kids,...

If there was ever any doubt, it's become increasingly clear that Beyoncé will attain Egot status in her lifetime. Nominations for the 2019 Emmy Awards were just announced, and the 37-year-old pop culture force earned six nominations for Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, which chronicled her history-making 2018 Coachella performance. With several Grammys already in her possession - 23, to be exact - Beyoncé is now closer to joining the 13 esteemed individuals who've won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Let's break down why.
With so many nominations, it's pretty likely Homecoming will score Beyoncé her Emmy. The Netflix concert film is nominated for outstanding prerecorded variety special, outstanding music direction, outstanding directing for a variety special, outstanding writing for a variety special, outstanding production design for a variety special, and outstanding costumes for variety, nonfiction, or reality programming. However, this isn't the first time Beyoncé has been nominated at the award show.

Beyoncé easily set a personal Emmy best today with six nominations for her Netflix special Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, outdoing her double-nominated 2016 visual album Lemonade, and the single nominations she received for 2013’s Super Bowl halftime show (short form entertainment) and special class program with husband Jay-Z for On the Run Tour.
Homecoming received nominations in the following categories: outstanding variety special, pre-recorded (where she’ll go up against Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney), outstanding writing for a variety special, outstanding production design for a variety special, outstanding costumes for a variety (non-fiction or reality programming), outstanding directing for a variety special and outstanding music direction.
Homecoming launched on Netflix April 17 to strong reviews, and chronicled the singer’s 2018 performance at the Coachella festival. Beyoncé wrote, directed and starred in the film.

It’s going to be a busy awards season for Beyonce. She could be up for Grammys or Oscars in the next six months, but she’s already made a splash with the fresh crop of Emmy nominations. Her documentary/concert movie “Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé” has been nominated for six Emmys, and a win in most of those categories would go to her personally.
The Netflix film is up for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), directing, writing, music direction, production design and costumes. Beyoncé would share in the award for any of those categories except the last two, being credited as co-director, writer and co-musical director as well as a producer.
Beyoncé had previously been nominated for four Emmys but has not yet won one. Her prior noms were for variety special and variety special directing, both for her visual album “Lemonade” in 2016, plus best short form entertainment for...

Beyonce doesn’t really need more awards hardware to cement her status as the current queen of pop culture, but she may get it anyway. She already has 23 Grammys, which makes her the second most awarded woman in the history of the awards (behind Alison Krauss), but she could add to that total in 2020. In fact, between this September and next February, Beyonce could win Emmys and Oscars, too.
First up, Beyonce could win Emmys for writing, directing and producing “Homecoming.” The Netflix special, which focuses on her widely acclaimed Coachella performance from 2018, is a contender for Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), but this wouldn’t be the recording artist’s first brush with TV’s biggest prize. She has already accumulated four nominations from the television academy: Best Short Form Entertainment Program for her 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Best Special Class Program for “On the Run Tour” with Jay-Z, Best...

In a big win for audiences eager to see more colorblind casting in Hollywood, R&b singer Halle Bailey has been tapped to play Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” the studio announced today. Bailey is best known as one half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle, which she formed with her sister in 2015. The project will mark her feature film debut.
She joins a cast that includes recent additions Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout Awkwafina. Earlier this week, Variety also reported that Melissa McCarthy was in talks to play the infamous villainess, Ursula the sea witch.
Loosely based on a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, the 1989 animated classic follows a red-headed mermaid princess who longs to be where the people are. Alan Menken wrote the original music, including the Oscar-winning tunes “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World,” and “Kiss the Girl,...

Beyonce at the Grammys is like Lucy and the football: every time Charlie Brown tries to kick it, it’s pulled right out from under him. She has been nominated for Album of the Year three times and lost three times. She’s not the only person who has failed to snag the top award that often, but the last two times she lost were both upsets. Could she finally win with her latest critically acclaimed set, “Homecoming”? If so, it would be the first live album to prevail in a quarter century.
“Homecoming” was a Netflix concert film that Beyonce herself directed. It centers around her buzzed-about performance at the 2018 Coachella Festival, which paid tribute to historically black colleges and universities. Critics adored the documentary, which scored 92 on MetaCritic based on 12 reviews and was described as “a career-defining document” for Beyonce.
