"There is nothing worse than being alone in this world"
brendanmckenzie29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Time Share is writer and director Sebastian Hoffman's second feature film (his first; Halley 2012), a dark comedy/mystery/thriller available now on Netflix.

"Do it for him" Gloria says, holding onto Andres in the darkness of their home. He's been weeping. We later find out that Gloria and Andres lost their son.

5 Years Later

Introducing: The Alvarez family. Pedro, Eva and their son Pedrito are newcomers at the Everfield International Time Share. Soon, they are interrupted by another family, the Bonillas. Abel, the father of the Bonillo family, insists that they too booked the time share and also possess a key, just like Pedro. Moises, an Everfield manager, offers Pedro a deal - one month free later if he chooses to accept the offer and stay with the Bonillo family, who he finds to be primitive and dumb. He agrees to stay with them and resolves that he doesn't need to spend much time in the villa anyway.

From the beginning, it appears that Pedro is the only one having a difficult time adjusting - unable to relax and enjoy the resort, while his wife and son unwind and make friends with the Bonillo family members. Pedro is so focused on making his family vacation perfect and avoiding the Bonilla's that he never loosens up. But his resistance might pay off.

Gloria and her husband Andres who are both employees of Everfield, are making their way up in the timeshare business. Gloria is preparing to pitch a sale to the Alvarez family, which is going to be her big break. Her husband on the other hand is still emotionally caught up in the death of their son.

In one scene, an Everfield manager is coaching Everfield Employees on how to use personal traumatic stories as a way to win over buyers. He even encourages Gloria to conjure up her feelings over her deceased son and use them as an asset to her sales pitch. Andres is hurt by this and discovers more about the secrets of Everfield on his own. He learns that here, "you either become waste, or you are spared." Gloria is already too far gone.

As the story progresses, Pedro becomes more frustrated by how close his wife and son are becoming to the Bonillos. It all seems innocent, but to Pedro, something nefarious is going on - the timeshare and the Bonillos are trying to take his family away from him. He is the only one who can see this and he must protect them.

In Time Share, our characters are divided by two beliefs. Pedro and Andres who are devoted to their families - and their wives who are driven by the promise of "paradise". A sort of jovial sounding score adds to the absurdity of the mood, reminding me of "The Lobster". A gorgeous and tropical setting, dense with lush green foliage is presented in beautiful, still wide shots coloured by glowing neon blues and reds - blue being the most prominent, while red brews ominously in the foreground. Whether it's a hellish reflection on the palm trees or a scarlet light cast on the looming pyramid itself, the colour red seems to represent the ill-intentioned Everfield; Ever-present and always watching.

Although there is a story here and it is interesting, there weren't too many moments that made me feel much of anything. While Pedro's character, who slowly deteriorates into insane paranoia over losing his family is somewhat comical, it isn't enough to carry the weight of this packed film. And to be honest, I just feel bad for him. He does something really nice for his family, but doesn't seem to get much appreciation for it.

Whether the choice is REAL family, or the Everfield family, there is "Nothing worse than being alone in this world". The message is clear, but the film itself is flat and leaves me feeling disconnected. The colours and shots are much more vibrant and captivating than its characters, but it isn't enough so that I would watch this one again. I would like to see what Sebastian Hoffman comes up with next time, because it's clear he is an artist with a unique vision.

Unsure

Either I was tired or this was a concept that did not get off the ground. Time Share challenges the viewer to look into the concept of family, while involving some sort of brainwashing pyramid scheme. Honestly, it leaves the viewer unsure of what the plot or main focus should be. I did not find anything to be funny in this film.

Not Bad
hookyhornstein22 December 2018
I don't bother writing reviews very often anymore and I doubt I would've written one for this film either had I not stumbled across a terrible review. Clearly the other reviewer hated this film and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but their brutal dismissal was one I just couldn't abide with.

Is this a fast-paced thrill a minute adventure? No.

Is it a side-splitting comedy? No.

Does it make any brilliant societal observation? No.

Does it have to accomplish any of those things to be a good, successful, entertaining film? No.

The film is beautiful. Its colors, locale, music and meandering pacing give it a mellow dreamlike quality - like, perhaps... a vacation at a resort.

The primary conflict is one that one annoy the crap out of any of us.

The events that evolve (or devolve, if you will) or two protagonists from their innocuous introduction to the destructive consequences of their encouter are perfectly ambiguous but there are also more than enough clues to explain them.

A beautiful and compelling movie. Hardly a must-see or an entry on anybody's top 100 but not bad at all.

Twisted, funny, scary but DEEP!

I catched this mini masterpiece at Sundance and I am grateful to be the first user review. This film is much more than meets the eye. It begins as a light family comedy of errors and it ends as a horror film where the only monsters are the feelings of paranoia and neurosis in the father figure characters. It is a smart critique on globalization, savage capitalism, the re colonization of Mexico *Even the hotel is an Aztec pyramid. A scary POV of a based patriarchal society. I recommend to watch this bizarre fable, a strange marriage between Buñuel and Lynch. RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad gives a mature portray or an American manager. Glad to see him grow up into a solid actor.

If you enjoy well made foreign indies, then I recommend this film. The film is beautifully shot and the acting is on point. It is a slow burn somewhat surrealist movie. If that sounds like your kind of film and have Netflix then there is no reason not to check it out. Personally, my main complaint was with the narrative as the film progressed. I felt the film sort of became lost in itself.

Let down by the ending
guybaxendale3 April 2019
This films is certainly not fast paced but it builds the characters well. The two males growing sense of alienation is palpable and the film builds a good levels of tension as to what might happen when one of them snaps. Sadly the ending when it comes is very anticlimactic and feels rather muddled and rushed.

Nice to see the child from Breaking Bad as the Time Share messiah figure to those that have drunk the Kool-aid.

It felt like my train just got cancelled.....again.
mrfm-3500219 January 2019
I stumbled across this gem about buying time shares whilst looking for a fresh Danish movie (which seem to be consistently satisfying) on Netflix. None were available, so instead I chose this. I watched and watched just waiting for that crucial moment where everything comes together and you realise that you aren't simply watching a rather dull anti-timeshare, anti-big corporation movie with the level of depth that you may get from an annoying and pretentious university student. I got to the end of the movie and am still waiting for the moment of brilliance to shine through. Did the movie explore the family theme? Hmm, not sure it did, though they used the word 'family' quite a bit, so I'm also a bit confused about why other reviewers thought it did. It is true that this is an unsettling, ruffling experience of the imperfection of humanity, but so are British railways, and I wouldn't necessarily go on a train ride in the UK for entertainment/insight/ philosophical perspective. I'd end up going berserk with frustration about how I'm wasting my time. Life is short. Watch a better movie.

An Average Movie
bshaef5 December 2018
The beginning was promising, but the ending was confusing and weak and pretty much left me indifferent other than I got to see Luis Mendes who I first saw in the 2 Crows series about the soccer team which was great. They guy is a great actor. Also, R J Mitte was surprisingly good. I guess he never got a chance in Breaking Bad because he was just a peripheral character.

The ending should have been better.

Tiempo Compartido (or Time Share for the English title) is a Mexican drama/mystery from Sebastián Hofmann. I thought the cinematography was pretty good, with a well chosen soundtrack that helped the story to remain suspenseful. I can't deny the story was intriguing and that made it worth watching but the ending was a bit disappointing which ultimately will bring the ratings down. The acting wasn't bad, no Oscar winning performances though. In short, I watched way worse movies in this genre than this one, but would I watch it again in the future? The answer to that is simple and is no, but it's worth a watch.

A little confused...
candibrown-933091 December 2018
I think that this movie had some really funny parts...I just feel like I thought that this movie was on a different path than it ended up to be...and I also don't think that I understand what was so horrific or scary about it at all...I'd say since it's on Netflix why not give it a twirl...you'll get some laughs...but mediocre at best...

I disagree with every review posted here
rjyjtwx5 August 2021
I think this movie is not only great, but important. The photography is beautiful, the music and the acting are great, but the script is a masterpiece (though i can understand how it is hard to see).

I think many people are wrong by viewing this as a dark-comedy, it is no comedy at all. It is a psychological thriller that criticizes transnational corporations and how the ideology they sell harms everybody involved. From the consumer who loses everything due to the lack of interest from the company, to the couple of workers that turn on each other because of it, an enterprise that sees them as numbers (in the case of Andrés) or pawns (in the case of Gloria): sheep turned into wool; sheep turned into pseudo-wolves.

This is the first review I write in here, and I do it because I loved the movie and feel like some other people got it a bit wrong. Hope you enjoy the movie.

Pd. This type of scams that take advantage of people's ignorance, like time shares and pyramid schemes, are a big issue here in Latin America, and have become more common in recent times due to the intervention of world wide corporations on the local economy.

Don't take your vacation here...
brockfal9 February 2022
This Netflix movie doesn't know what it wants to be. It's is a big mix of charm, oddness, is a touch comedic, and there's a strong dash of threat and tension too, but it never takes full advantage of any of those elements. Good looking and with a great soundtrack, this could have been better.

Meaningless movie about nothing
alexandis-3643817 April 2023
I hope the screenwriter and the director really had something on their mind making this movie. But for me it's a story about nothing. I have not seen the idea of deeds and actions of anyone of the characters.

What the management of the hotel really does for their clients to gain success and be on top? Is there anything besides silly slogans? Really, I expected there would be some black criminal ending... Even that would look more genuine than what was really shown.

The hotel service team. Weird people, weid talks and behavior. Once again, I expected someone there would turn out to be a maniac. And that would look normal in this movie.

Guests are probably the most meaningful characters. But they cannot lead the way solely, so the whole tale is just fallen apart.

NOT "The Lobster" Dark Comedy.
sbevelle13 January 2019
I really love dark comedy - The Lobster for example is 10/10. I'm still can't figure out what the point of this was? I wouldn't even say dark comedy. Nothing appealed to me at all. Truly one of the worst films I've seen - ever.

I saw this movie just last night, it gave me " get out " vibes but like better? It's a Mexican movie. An amazing scary soundtrack the whole movie! Definitely recommend this movie if any of you like horror/thriller movies!

Senseless, cult movie
antonsands7 December 2018
Dialogues are senseless, fragments are not connected. Movie about nothing. Music score is horrible. It sucks to live, that is what it says. Why everybody is saying in a movie about Family? Cult movie, not a drama. Shame that new motion picture creators show off their own depression episodes.

Could it be worse? I don't think so...
mahsa-mn6 January 2019
Such a bad movie to give the simplest, childish message to the audience "don't buy timeshares!!!" For those who would say that this movie has a deeper meaning, well guess what, I researched and watched different interviews with the writer/director and they actually had the message in mind and there is nothing else behind the movie. Lots of loose ends and meaningless scenes that really don't have a purpose. Feels like they tried to throw in cool shots and "creative" subjects in to the movie, without really having a back story or a connection for them.

RJ Mitte is the only good thing about this film
bregund30 July 2023
Mitte is wonderfully malevolent, and knows how to use his face to convey expressions which imply power and dominance, it's a treat to watch his scenes. Unfortunately the script is vague and meandering, and never gets off the ground. There seems to be an underlying statement of family and separation and yearslong obligations, and none of these themes gain any clarity or come to any satisfying conclusion. It's really too bad because the supporting cast are pretty good, and the setting is at turns dreary and luxurious. If you want some confusing evening entertainment by all means watch this pointless film.

Expecting something more surprise
ks-6050016 August 2019
Its obvious a story of society like to brainwashing people to get what they want. But it classifies as a horror maybe little lame. Horror in a sense some fellows who are not in obedience thus get treated badly by the society. Such is a well known fact and story ends the way what the fact is. I totally expecting more at the end....Is it really Netflix production? Hmmmmm
