Still intrigued by the promises but disappointed by the set up.
acrazey5713 September 2018
So far reviews have praised that AHS is back to its original form... Thank goodness too, after that "interesting" season last year.

However, already there is something lacking that the first four seasons had that this season doesn't.

Positives: The opening, so abrupt! It really added an element of reality to it. The end of the world happened just like that. The opening credits going back to its roots was a plus but it didn't have the same impact. Sarah Paulson is at her best when she uses subtlety. That fact that Venable is painted so evil yet she is so reserved is what makes her so appealing. Can't wait to see what they do with her character. Same with Kathy Bates! Joan Collins! Her quips stole the episode. I didn't care for Billy Eichner last season but he did so much with so little. Michael Langdon's entrance was awesome but also a tad bit off.

Negatives: Everything else is spoon fed, including the cast. Nothing we need to figure out or postulate about. Funny, considering the promos had fans doing that all summer long. I loved Adina Porter as Lee but all of her lines are so angelically rigid, almost artificial. Evan Peters is always a gem but I have no idea where is character is at. Leslie Grossman had me in the opening but quickly tested my patience. Same with the two teens. So did Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman! I thought he would be the episode stealer but he was actually the most annoying!

Still hopeful considering what is promised to come. If this season doesn't try too hard to force story lines and just focuses on making a good overall story, it could be a really kick ass season. Just be its own thing. Also...

JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN COVEN, THANKS BYE.

What a treat!

I was really taken aback by this episode. The last 2 seasons of AHS have been rather mediocre but this one rasied the bar up. It was gritty, creepy, and contained a fair amount of humor too! The new narrative seems too have a great perspective and I'm tremendously excited to see how the crossover will play out.

NWO Conspiracy theorists may be interested...

Warning: Spoilers
Great way to start off a season which seems largely based on end of world conspiracy & the "new world order"/"Illuminati," and the conspiracies behind their satanic ritualism. Being selected based on genetic make up is a perfect example of this. Did anyone else catch the news anchorman say "I can't believe we finally did this," as if he was a part of the global conspiracy to initiate the end times? Definitely excited to see where this season goes.

Warning: Spoilers
This will be like fallout during nuclear winter and it makes you wonder how every thing will fall in place. didnt lead into any direct story arch except with langdon which obviously is the antichrist. they leave you with the world ends and the apocalypse if they keep every episode with out a preview it truly is the apocalypse.

Amazing!

Warning: Spoilers
Well I got to say that this was one of the most amazing season premieres that I've ever seen in my entire life. And I can already say that Ms.Wilhemina Venable & Evie Gallant & Mallory & Coco & finally Dinah Stevens are my five favorite characters. But mostly Venable & Evie are my most favorite. And I cannot believe that in the end of the episode they showed Cody Fern's character offering to invite everyone who lives in Outpost 3 to another facility. But during the beginning of the episode really felt like it was all real. And I really love the theme song, it's a combination of Murder House & Coven & Apocalypse all in one. Murphy, you've done it again.

Very interesting

Warning: Spoilers
First, what I liked: there's a lot of style here and it really shines through with the cinematography and lovely brown-black color palette, both supported by the costuming. There's a lot of atmosphere in the sets as well which is reminiscent of Asylum. Paulson was really good in this, given that it's a serious role like in Murder house, not las season with her running around screaming half the time. This is very different for AHS and I'm curious to see where it goes. And now what I wasn't too happy about- Absolutely hates the first 7 minutes or so. Horrible dialogue and absolutely cartoonish characters. It definitely got better as the episode went on, but my question is why is so much of this show, including last season, played so much for comedy? It is called American HORROR story, right? And it seems to go far beyond just comic relief. My other problem was the really awkward and unsubtle political commentary. The reason for all these people being held is because of an Ancestry website? The one girl got arrested for protesting on campus? and the entire house was created because people thought they where equal because of social media? It all just felt so forced and would've been a much smoother episode without all this explanation.

Last note- I cringed so hard at the 'this stew is Stu' line. Was that needed?

Better than the last two seasons!
sindre-stang13 September 2018
I have to say i was afraid this season would be as bad as the two last seasons but i guess i was wrong. This was s very good start and i think this season is going to be better and better trough the season. The storyline is really good, and some of the characters are very interesting but sadly, some are very boring and poorly written as well.

The first episode is however very good filmed and is beautiful to look at. It is clear that they have used a very big amount of money this season and it needed that. I Am very excited to see Jessica Lange come back later this season who is one of the greatest actresses on the planet and will definetly make this season even better just for the one episode she will be in.

Do not listen to the haters, this episode is great and you should definetly watch it. American horror story is finaly going back to how it was!

Everyone wants American story S01 and Coven S03 back!!!
SassySavage114 September 2018
I'm really hoping they do some sequel of the witches or the first season... Please do a decent AHS this season! A Horror Show doesn't need to be extremely disturbing and have disgusting scenes... It is not appealing at all to watch!! I have to skip every damn part. That goes for the opening theme too. Still intrigued to see where this show goes. This new episode wasn't bad. I'll give it a go.

A bold opening episode. Joan Collins wipes everyone out.
masonbingley200015 September 2018
American Horror Story had quite a lot to live up to once it was penned as the Coven & Murder House Crossover, and the opening episode holds a lot of hope for the rest of the season.

The season almost immediately builds a tension and hits with the action, so it never really feels like we're waiting for something substantial to happen. Within the first episode, there are moments where the episode slows, but it does show some disturbing moments and nice twists that really bring the interest to a peak. The performances are particularly strong as the series manages to build humour quite impressively despite the haunting and mysterious setting that is Outpost 3. Leslie Grossman, Evan Peters and Joan Collins are immediate favourites as all three break the tension with humorous comments, melodramatic outbursts or just pure greatness. Collins in particular is most significant; every moment she spends on screen or offers dialogue, her character is the instant centre of attention in the mind of the viewer. She's rich, funny and downright crazy and that's why she's such a brilliant addition.

The episode seems to fly by as it never really slows down significantly so it ends quite abruptly, but - in AHS fashion - it leaves many questions unanswered, so the intrigue can carry you to episode two. Unfortunately, the characters portrayed by Ashley Santos (Emily) and Kyle Allen (Timothy) are not especially entertaining and do take up a considerable amount of time. They do seem like they're thrown in there just for the audience to learn about Outpost Three, so maybe some development is yet to come, but at the moment they are rather forgettable. Other than that, the episode is a great opener that seems very true to the American Horror Story style that many feel has been missing in later seasons, so there is much hope for Apocalypse.

Best. opening. EVER (and then they effed it all up)
Radu_A14 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
After a couple of lackluster seasons, AHS is back with a bang and that's no hype. "Cult" had already put the crazy into high gear, yet lost itself within the characters' various obsessions, couldn't tie them up into a bundle and petered out by dispatching its protagonists with little coherence. Murphy & Falchuk seem to have realized this, so this time, they kill off the world in five minutes, allowing the story to focus on a limited number of people. Good choice, writing wise! And to avoid a Christie-ish "And then there were none" feel, they add another component in the last minute to keep you wondering where this may go.

Update: another case of not delivering on an excellent premise. We all knew there would be a "Coven" crossover, but what we didn't know was that the whole Nuclear holocaust shebang would be tossed aside for a Coven sequel. So it looks like they're wrapping up the franchise in a really messy way - . And Dame Joan was offed way too early - heck, EVERYBODY was. If you like scares, watch "The Haunting of Hill House" instead. AHS has gone Camp Stillborn.

Don't they know, it's the end of the world.
kxprailer10 October 2018
This episode could never have been perfect. Being an AHS season opener. But DAMN. Did they ever create an intriguing premise. I was skeptical on the whole apocalypse theme for this season, given all the Dystopian stuff in TV/Film in recent years. Thanks to AHS's signature blend of characters you're destined to like, and those you immediately hate, and a sudden apocalypse that just happens so suddenly. It's brilliant work. By the end of the episode I was so curious on where they'd go next, a feeling I haven't experienced with AHS since season 4. Hotel, Roanoke and Cult left me feeling cold after each show. But 'The End' was a brilliant starting episode.

Nuclear apocalypse? More like someone set fire to a used diaper.
davewadam198225 September 2018
While the cinematography by Gavin Kelly goes a long way to creating the creepy dread needed to make the premise of this eighth season work, you can't help but wonder if that's all that's making it work. Sure the costumes are great, but this is AHS, so it's all got to be flamboyant. The musical leitmotif(s?) are effective but this is AHS so every scene has got to be saturated in music to hammer the horror home.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk seem to have made the same mistake as in 'Cult' that taking a hot topic and finding the sheer horror in it doesn't create good dialogue, story or characters. From the very opening scene, we're introduced to Evan Peters' and Leslie Grossman's characters - two pastiches drawn with such thick strokes that the painting elephant can't even handle the brush. Later, when a character hears who else will be in a fallout shelter, her response of "rich people, of course" smacks of the same dualistic us-versus-them attitude that Murphy and Falchuk actually did well to challenge last year. It feels like the show regresses every year.

To some, this is sufficient entertainment. But Murphy and Falchuk can't even trust their fans to work out for themselves that someone jumping out of a building during a nuclear missile warning is committing suicide to not have to live through the fallout. There has always got to be someone blurting exposition. This is a show where a character's very presence commands silence when she walks into a room, but she still rings a bell, because... it looks cool? You can't have a good story without genuine dialogue coming from genuine characters, and unfortunately Apocalypse stacks up too many wince-enducing moments to make it all work. Not even Sarah Paulson Evan Peters are able to make their characters seem like anything more than caricatures. And with their calibre, that's saying alot.

So it all comes down to the look of it all. Sure, there's nice creepy use made of architectural symmetry and low lighting. Candlelight reflected in champagne glasses. 'Hotel' shared that same sumptuous positive aspect, but again, Hotel was brought down by the sheer lack of vision and an inability to make anything thrown at it stick.

This reviewer will no doubt be watching the rest of the series hoping that some life can come out of this nuclear wasteland. But by the end, it might all be just another "meh"... which is admittedly not the effect you would hope a show set during a nuclear apocalypse would give you.

Pretty powerful stuff for a tv series!
skip-9875613 September 2018
I had no idea in advance what this seasons theme was going to be, so i went in unknowing..This season starts off with a bang, and i mean a BANG! Realistically done, intense, gripping powerful stuff here! I love also the uncensored use of the F word at times, really, when a show is This mature and Intense , it would be a crime to limit the self expression of people in that situation..If it offends anyone, turn it off or try another channel, perhaps Hallmark. The show starts off with quite a momentum then middway thru it degenerates into a little of its horror pedigree, not too bad but it took away some of the realism and intensity and brought in elements or horror..how can you fault that though..it IS called american Horror story..LOLOL...Overall, a great start to a very cool season and a terrific changeup from some of the other storylines of previous seasons, some of which i skipped entirely as they just grossed me out and were digusting...This theme is a take on real recent events that Could have gone Real Bad..a very interesting watch!

My gosh! I'm super excited! First of I'd like to say how Canada wasn't hit with any missiles. Wooo Canada! Second, the beginning shocked me. I think it was the Amber Alert haha. There's so much to say, I'm watching all my TiVo episodes. I can't wait fer more. The fact it's like season 1 and coven are my two favourite seasons following hotel, asylum and election. The other two, meh. I watched because im a supporter:)

WOW
shiranai-7377018 September 2018
The initial episode of AHS explodes with creativity and end time mood. I would say it even has a little of David Lynch's Dune. There is very little that I don't like (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapmans acting leaves a little bit to be desired). But generally this is a series I'd binge in 1 day if I could. Awesome kick-off and I hope it stays like that and doesn't turn in the inappropriate cheesiness we know of some seasons.

marcoarbia15 September 2018
This was a great start. The episode tone is a good combination between irony and pop horror, but what they really nailed was the setting and atmosphere. Top noch. Acting's also really good especially from Paulson, Bates and Peters and in the end there are enough question to keep u wondering and spark up curiousity for the next episodes.

The return of 1-3
lorcan-6188114 September 2018
So, AHS: Apocalypse premiered two nights ago and due to the wait of two weeks til it premieres in European fox, I decided to watch it on a site and I have just finished it..could Apocalypse be one of the best seasons of the whole show since Coven, because it sure did shape itself out to be. If you noticed compared to seasons from 4-7, Apocalypse opened way more differently and felt way to much like the first three seasons, bringing back a moment of nostalgia through out the whole episode, comparing to Cult and Roanoke's premiere, this just felt so like Asylum or Coven -- which is an amazing sign because Apocalypse sure did shape itself out to be a magnificent season in the first season. The tension, the disturbing scenes, the amazing acting from Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Joan Collins, Adina Porter and Leslie Grossman who had some of the best dialogue of the entire show. Once you started the season, there was such a huge feeling of dread and it worked so well. I imagine many great things coming from Apocalypse and I can't wait to see all of our favorite Murder House and Coven characters again in future episodes!!

Warning: Spoilers
Given the exposition with the whole missile attack thing and the nuclear fallout I was quite excited and was looking forward to see what the episode has to offer.

Nothing - this is what happened after the first 15 minutes. It seems to me that AHS is not a show that cares about plot anymore but rather invests all its energy in trying to be inclusive and diverse - which is great when it actually makes sense.

The Coco character is just awful.

Intense beginning.
cruise0126 September 2019
Apocalypse (4 out of 5 stars).

American Horror Story opens with a nuclear apocalypse happening. Very little is known about the nuclear besides several countries are attacked. Possibly World War 3. The episode opens with few characters one getting her hair done. And the phone alarm systems went off. With a missile inbound. One character has a ticket to get to an underground bunker to wait out the nuclear storm. Then, there is a group picking people up to save them cause they are selected to be the perfect genome which they pick up a teenager who was about to head off to college. After the fallout, the remaining survivors are taken to a underground facility led by Sarah Paulson's character. Which they are stuck eating protein cubes. And assigned specific tasks. Little is known about her character besides she may be unethical and her motives are shady. The episode opened up great and intense. The chaos with everyone running to escape. And only one hour to find a safe haven. It was scary, intense, and exciting.

Warning: Spoilers
The series follows it's culture with wonderful writing and awesome facts. The episode was placed in the world facing nuclear war. But the real suspense began in a underground facility with evil caretakers. Let's see what will happen next but surely the series would be satisfying.
