REVIEW:
  • The story was really interesting but there were parts that seemed too slow (scenes without action). By the second half of the movie, there were twist and turns happened made things a lot better.
  • You would get really mad at most of the scenes but the ending was very good.
  • There are so many morbid/brutal scenes. I almost stopped watching in the beginning because of it.
  • Action scenes were really good and intense.
  • I was shocked to see Peter Stormare (Lucifer from Constantine movie) here.
  • I was really amazed at Lee Jong Suk here because he was so scary at some of the scenes. This is the first time I saw him as a villain and he did a great job especially since his previous characters were good guys.
  • Jang Dong Gun and Kim Myung-min were amazing in their respective roles.

SHOULD YOU WATCH IT: Your choice. Take note that there are many morbid scenes.

Amazingly directed movie
vpashish21 July 2022
South Korean movie industry produces one of the finest movies, especially action thrillers and this one is no exception. Even though a one time watch, offers one of the best action scenes, screenplay, direction, dialogues. Nail biting thriller you are looking for. Highly Engaging and serves the purpose that is entertainment.

Not very good, indeed
MovieIQTest23 April 2018
SPOILER: All the A-list Korean actors, but sadly wasted by a ridiculous screenplay. Americans were again played the role with no conscience and blind justice. South Koreans had kao-tau to the Americans, covered up the horrible serial killer from the North Korea. And North Koreans also got no conscience and turned a blind eye to the serial crimes as long as the guy's father was still in power. South Korean Police high ranking officers got no conscience either, so the real detective who did the right thing was wasted for nothing to gain. The whole movie is a much ado about nothing circle, just telling a ridiculous story, but there's one thing to learn from this film, especially to our men, you and me:

Never insult another guy's impotency publicly, if you do, you might pay a very high price later.

I expected a Psycho Thriller
SaberaSurovy2 April 2023
I mean the main antagonist is indeed a serial killer, so why not? It was more like a political drama with some action thriller. The cast was well-chosen and I have no complaints about their acting. I am still not sure what role the CIA plays in the movie. Why are they involved?

Lee Jong Suk's characters have surprisingly few lines throughout the film. I heard he is really shy in real life, but villainous characters really suit him, to be honest. Looking forward to seeing him playing more challenging characters in the future.

I would recommend this film if you prefer something dark and twisted. Happy watching.

VIP Review: Park Hoon-jung impresses big time with this crime-action thriller!
Achyut_Prashast_Singh25 April 2018
Movie: VIP (18): Action/Crime/Thriller - Korean

Positives:

  • Jang Dong-gun, Kim Myung-min, Park Hee-soon perform very well. Lee Jong-suk also does a fairly decent job. Jang excels in the action scenes and at times I got reminded of his movie "No Tears for the Dead" which was an excellent action movie.
  • The action sequences are excellent and a treat to watch.
  • The screenplay is excellent, though there are times when the film does slow down, but thankfully it regains its pace in no time, and goes on to entertain till the very end.
  • Production values are decent.
  • The BGM is in many sequences, outstanding.
  • The format of narration is quite interesting.

Negatives:

  • The film could've been edited a bit to be a little more captivating.

Repeat value: Yes

Overall, VIP comes out as a refreshing entertainer which blends action and thrill in a unique proportion, It's even good to see Park Hoon-jung write with his usual style, as he did in "The Unjust" and "I Saw the Devil". Just make sure kids don't get to watch the film (unless they become old enough). A definitely entertaining watch for genre fans, and much, much, much better than "New World".

Mediocre for Korean standards
leviathantv11 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
While the cast for the roles is superb this movie lacks considerably in plot.

The storyline is weak with no suspense and 1 or 2 tiny plot twists that aren't that interesting. To be honest the situations the stars get into are far from the reality anyone could have in mind. In short 3 different parties want to capture a serial killer that is the son of a high ranking official. There is no hunt whatsoever though since he literally does not try to evade them at all.

The action in the movie is almost non existent with the exception of literally only 2 scenes.

Felt greatly disappointed since Korean movies are usually fantastic in this genre.

5 / 10 stars only for the casting and the length of the movie

A sausage fest with an unimaginative plot
goksueylul9 May 2021
There is no motivation attributed to the antagonist other than 'he is a spawn of demon'. His past in a oppressive system could be taken into account. His father perhaps? But nah. 'He did it because he can' is the best they came up with. And a hint about his reproductive organ. Groundbreaking.

There is no female character in the whole movie and the very few female "characters" exist without any lines other than begging for their lives. They as mere tools for the antagonist to display his cruelness. Most of the scenes with cruelty were unnecessary considering what the audience gathered so far against the character of the antagonist. It is so much that it is hard to not question the motive of the director.

Also some of the scenes of protagonist come off as complete bs. Totally realistic scenes are not what one looks for in action movies but when they are also unimaginative, it leaves a bad taste. Police force ganging up on national intelligence like they are a bunch of street thugs? Really?

This is a power/revenge fantasy movie that is catered for male audience and it doesnt require for much critical thinking. On the contrary, you need to turn it off to enjoy it.

A Gory Mess
fake_moviestar29 June 2021
I went into this movie having absolutely no expectations and yet I still came out disappointed. Despite the efforts of a star-studded cast, including the international star Peter Stormare, this was an utter waste of a movie. The only engaging character was Chae Yi-Do, all others were so stiffly written they could have been played by extras instead of so many well known actors of Korea. The plot was a total mess, carried by one gory scene to the next with very little connecting them other than a "super evil" serial killer. Lee Jong-Suk is convincingly evil, but because he was given very little to work with he just feels like a caricature of what a serial killer should be.

This movie might have worked with a script overhaul, perhaps with Detective Chae suspecting Kim Gwang-Il, chasing him for a bit with Jong-Suk playing the good boy, and then finally dropping the pretense at the end? I feel that would have been more engaging at least!

Overall I wish I hadn't wasted my time, as a huge fan of Lee Jong-Suk I was both disturbed and let down. The overall rating for this movie is much too generous.

Too much violence and illogical plot, an overrated movie
Misss258 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie follows two cops one from North Korea and another from South Korea trying to put him in jail for the crimes he has been doing for long (Serial killing). Literally no one couldn't put him into jail for his deeds though they have the evidence against him. He even killed his maid after returning from police custody. Even the American police came to fitch him.

Then why anyone couldn't charge him with anything?

Why the chief is protecting him?

Why North Korean police released him?

Why south korean police couldn't hold him?

Why the American police trying to protect him?

All beacuse his father was politican so he had some sensitive information regarding South and North Korea and about America. So,all are just trying to a serial killer.

Waste of time!
nazmul39914 August 2021
Although he is a serial killer, there must be some motive to kill him. Despite having more than two hours of screen time, his motive is not clear.

Horrible
jacobDavid_josephMoses25 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie doesn't leave you with any shred of satisfaction. This is a 2 hour long movie and apart from the last ten seconds it's all about how culprit with the smirk is set loose repeatedly despite innocent people keep getting brutally maimed, raped and mangled.

The most surprising aspect is the writer/director of the movie Park Jung, the same person that wrote the story/screenplay for "new world". Gory movies are perfectly fine as long as they are done right, "No Mercy" for example, leaves audience with satisfaction, "the outlaws" even though less gruesome,is still fine. But in this case there's no penance, infact it's everything opposite of revenge, to the point it becomes comical. They catch the perpetrator, then are forced to let him go, the catch again and again has to let him go, this time he puts the first protagonist to coma, and then caught again and this time puts the second protagonist to eternal coma, keeps killing/raping for 2 years.
