This excellent, suspenseful three part thriller was all the better for featuring identifiable locations in my ain hometown. The tension was skilfully ratcheted up episode by episode as a routine maternity-cover employee arrives at a successful Glasgow city centre architect firm, where young up-and-coming architect Ellen has just secured a major contract to design a contemporary library, but who gradually suspects her all-too-perfect stand-in Paula of taking over every aspect of her life.

But is she herself just being paranoid? Married to a psychiatrist (and whose mother was also a shrink), with whom she's just had their first child, we learn that they first met when she was his patient. Not until the conclusive final episode does it become abundantly clear just who the psychologically disturbed party really is, indeed there was actually a point where it seemed as if evil was going to win out but a miraculous near-death recovery precipitates an ending where just desserts are served all round, including to her less than staunch husband and loose ends are tied up.

The title of the piece might seem unimaginative but in fact once the evil-doer's intentions become clear, it's obvious that it's not only her rival's job as lead architect that she's attempting to replace.

The idea of the deranged home-wrecking female of course has been around for years but I liked the twist here of the real motivation for the perpetrator's deranged actions which again aren't revealed until the end and turned out to centre on child-loss bereavement. Actually, whilst saying that, I was probably a little disappointed when a murder occurs out of nowhere in the form of the suspicious death of the wife of the husband and wife business owners, as I thought at that stage the drama didn't need any further heightening but thankfully it didn't trigger a spree of killings which narrative restraint I must admit I appreciated.

The acting by the principals was very good throughout, Morven Davies as the triumphant young career-mother who can't quite believe what is happening to her, Dougray Scott as her conflicted but admiring boss and especially Vicky McClure, last seen on the right side of the law in "Line Of Duty", now excelling as the unhinged Paula, portrayed almost as a Mary Poppins' evil doppelgänger.

Sure there were some holes in the plot and some of the characters' actions and motivations didn't always add up, but in the end it played out very well in a clear, bright production (it's shot almost entirely in daylight, office hours with no clichéd danger-at-midnight darkness scenes) that was well-filled, well-paced, well acted and well executed.

Smart, gripping three part drama.
Sleepin_Dragon20 April 2018
I really enjoyed this thriller. A slick, gripping, engaging three part drama which develops well, before a dramatic, albeit unusual conclusion.

Beautifully acted, the two main players Morven Christie (Ellen) and Vicky McClure (Paula) are excellent, bouncing off one another brilliantly, as you watch you get a true sense of awkwardness, almost loathing between the pair, the body language was expertly done.

McClure is always the good guy, moral, but here she has a killer smile, beautiful but deadly. Well acted all round, Dougray Scott, Siobhan Redmond etc, but it's the two lead actresses that shine.

The first two episodes are great, if a little padded at times, the third is definitely bonkers, and came in for a lot of criticism, but I enjoyed it, after two hours of meaningful stares they needed to do something different, and that they certainly did.

The finale wasn't what I was expecting, I had a different conclusion in my mind altogether, but I applaud it for being bold, too often you watch a drama which contains a flat conclusion, not here.

8/10, really enjoyed.

Enjoyable but has its flaws.
guylyons15 March 2017
This production could have been a ten. A complex tale about a replacement professional being hired to cover, for a senior Architect, in a small practice.

As the story progresses, you become hooked, and are left guessing about every major character. There is quality tension, in more than a few scenes, and unlike some dramas a more restrained type of shock hits you, which is far more effective. Vicky McClure is simply superb, and i could watch her all day, as my wife equally agreed. Unfortunately Morven Christie, and Richard Rankin, were not as eye catching. One can find faults in the story line, but it entertained us both, and was enjoyable viewing. I bet Hitchcock would loved to direct this tale. The ending could have been so much better, and in dramas like this, having rather different or even sinister closure, would make it far more memorable. I also think there is plenty of room for this type of work, and even wonder if writers consult with genuine drama lovers, as to how to get the best out such stories. Reading complete reviews of this is risky, simply do what we did, and enjoy it.

Intelligent TV
studioAT15 March 2017
The great thing about TV in this day and age is that sometimes a show comes from nowhere and grabs peoples attention. In 2017 this show did that.

With a good premise and a cast that you've likely seen in lots of other things this show brightened up dreary spring evenings with its quick turns and obsession based plot.

We need intelligent TV shows like this, and on free to watch stations, rather than buried away on Netflix. I'm sure in time more people will find this on IPlayer/DVD and see what a good show it was.

It's a shame that there won't be a series 2.

Gripping, twists and turns, bingeworthy

This was creepy in a sociopath kind of way, the ending was perfectly ok and I really enjoyed it. I have no idea why some people are bagging it.

Thank you to the reviewer who said ignore the negative reviews and watch it. Really good.

Not great, but OK
davidpodmore15 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My main problem with this is the main character. Totally unlikeable, you don't really care about her and her problems and you don't feel good for her when things work out OK. That is quite important in a show like this, although yes they obviously wanted the viewers to question her and not be quite sure about her personality and motives but you end up not routing for her at all. It's almost a really bad message because it all works out for the woman and she is a complete nightmare, just less of a nightmare than the other. The show was OK but if you don't like or care about the main characters it is tough and the likable characters (the men) were secondary in the story and both lose out. Not bad but seemed rushed at the end too with a very dodgy finish.

This is a slow moving crime drama, worth the watch. It has an Hitchcock feel to it.

Gripping start, disappointing ending
dawright-2678022 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
What a shame this drama had such a poor ending. I was engrossed at the start and after the 2nd episode of this 3 part drama I was looking forward to a gripping finale. The whole series was ruined in my opinion in the last 15 to 20 minutes due to an ending that was poorly written, contradicting and made little sense.

Ellen's baby was kidnapped from her home by Paula (straight forward enough) with Ellen desperately trying to locate Paula and her baby. Paula phoned Ellen demanding she meet with her if she wanted to see her baby again. That would have been a good time to let others know what is happening and where you are going... but no she didn't do that? She finds herself in a car with Paula and being forced to commit suicide in order to find out where her baby was being kept? Not a well thought out plan, but fortunately for Paula, Ellen bought it and decided to kill herself.

She then swallowed some pills (presumably that would have killed her) and became unconscious for a period of time. But then miraculously made a full and speedy recovery and was able to not only activate the passenger air bag of the car using a 9 volt battery from a torch, which then smashed the windscreen (handy) but then proceeded to 'hot wire' the car by touching two wires together. What was the writer/director thinking? Whilst I'm sure this is physically possible on a 10+ year old car, it was nothing short of ridiculous and laughable.

Towards the end we find out that David's wife 'Kay' thought he was having an affair with Ellen which turned out to be nonsense. In fact Paula did kill Kay 'because she was annoyed Kay kept asking about her daughter' At that point I thought why have i wasted all this time watching this program. What an pathetic, feeble story line.

To top it all off the 3rd and final installment ended abruptly with no idea what Ellen was going to do for a job, or whether she reconciled things with her husband Ian.

To sum up, this BBC drama should have been great but was let down in the last half an hour of the final episode. There were some good performances in parts, particularly by Vicky Mclure as Paula.

On the plus side I enjoyed watching the beautiful Morven Christie. Almost made up for the ill thought out, confusing and ridiculous ending.

Vicky McClure
Phantomzonevillain4 May 2021
Vicky McClure is a great actress and gave an excellent, layered performance. High production values does not take away from the fact that Ellen, played by Morven Christie, another fine actress, was so thoroughly unlikeable, that you never feel any sympathy for her. Frankly, her behaviour throughout would lead her to her dismissal from her job and Vicky's character should be hired regardless, before any sinister events took place.

First two episodes great. Finale appallingly bad.
Good-Will14 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I wonder whether the writers had planned on a six part series since the first two episodes were great. There was suspense and intrigue and everything seemed to be building slowly to an enthralling denouement.

Then episode three happened.

How can you describe a finale where nearly every character suddenly becomes as thick as two short planks and does random things for no apparent reason?

Five things (spoilers in random order of stupidity):

1: Refuse a paternity test which you know will prove to your boyfriend that he is the father of your child. For no apparent reason.

2: Whilst on the phone and receiving a message from your nemesis that they have kidnapped your child then don't mention it to the person you're talking to, even though the demand is to meet in a specified public location, and don't forward the texts to the police.

3: When trying to get someone to commit suicide with drugs, only give them a dose which will make them fall asleep for a few minutes.

4: Make sure that you shout very loudly to everyone before faking being pushed down a staircase because someone might notice that the alleged perpetrator never touched you. Luis Suarez knows how to do this but you actually don't.

5: As the alleged perpetrator of pushing someone downstairs then don't ask the police to find out whether any of your DNA is on the front of the victim's dress since the lack of it would exonerate you.

There was a point where it would and could have got very interesting if David was actually the father of Lia, but that idea seemed to fall by the wayside. It would have made the finale far more interesting if Ellen had turned out to be the manipulative nutter.

Nearly as bad as Marcella, but the acting in this was better.

Delicious thriller is great fun
lisbethinsydney4 April 2021
The extremely competent Morven Christie heads a perfect cast in this very satisfying psychological thriller centred around the highly volatile relationships between women and babies and women and each other. The previous reviewer who suggested a psycho Mary Poppins gets the joke. No need to fact check or overthink this, just enjoy the roller coaster ride!

Not always credible
Prismark1019 March 2017
An absurd thriller which gets more absurd as it goes along. At the end you might be forgiven for thinking that the twists could had been done differently.

Ellen works for a successful architect's firm in Glasgow that lands a big contract but she soon gets pregnant. Ellen plans to return soon after having the baby and Paula is hired as the replacement. Paula is competent at her job and already has a 10 year old daughter. She took time out of her life to be with her daughter and be a full time parent during those early years.

Ellen is disturbed when Paula insists she should not return to work so quickly and she fears that Paula has another agenda, she might be malevolent. Pretty soon Paula impresses the bosses, clients and Ellen comes across as paranoid. Ellen is even accused of violence towards Paula and even child neglect. As her relationship with her boyfriend falls apart Ellen needs to expose Paula as a manipulator but as others think, it is Ellen who might be disturbed.

There is an element of Fatal Attraction here as Paula gazes at Ellen's perfect life, perfect family. The third episode should had been more intriguing but falls apart as many of the characters behave bizarrely.

What the hell was that ending?!
mattman_spurs25 October 2020
This show is decent, an okay thriller - the main character is really irritating though. And then just as it reaches its conclusion it's ruined by one of the worst endings to a show I can recall.

A disappointing series.
motman-429143 September 2017
Started with the promise of plenty of suspense in the first two episodes. However the climax was totally unbelievable and lacked any logic. Also I think it could have been filmed in just two episodes and not as three. I now regret having wasting my time watching this series. A disappointment as it started so well.

Britain's dumbest people and a loony!
khunkrumark15 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
***MINOR SPOILERS IN THE LAST PARAGRAPH!***

Some stupid people get tricked by a loony!

Three episodes of stupid people making remarkably stupid decisions... but don't skip episode 3 because the most stupid things happen at the end.

If you were to think of the dumbest people in the UK and put them in a 3-part suspenseful TV show, you'd do well to give this lot of clowns a good once-over. These people are REALLY dumb!

Look - I get it... TV drama is a business and you have to play to the crowd... but even young people couldn't possibly fall for this ridiculous rubbish, surely? Please tell me I'm right. Please tell me the human race isn't going down the toilet and that it's just the morons in charge of commissioning TV programs! The BBC claimed that almost 6,000,000 tuned in to watch this so what am I missing that they are seeing?

It's possible that this is some kind of experiment, where the writers try to get people to say "Why the bloody hell did you do that?" at the TV screens. It's NOT possible that this dreck could ever be taken seriously as drama. I think I can understand why there are only TWO reviews (so far) for this.

Stupidest of all was husband Ian, who, despite being some kind of psychotherapist from a family of physiotherapists, wouldn't recognize reality or reason if the words were written on a brick in big letters and thrown at him. His level of stupidity makes goldfish look self- aware!

I suppose if you're a twelve-year-old girl and just growing out of comics like Bunty and Jackie, this may attract your attention.

The acting was fine (Vicky McClure was exceptional) and the direction and scenery were nice - but the story was just about the dumbest thing I have seen this year... although, I must say... the razor blade nightmare scene was good... but how did Ellen know that the baby was in the library? And why did the cops arrest Paula and NOT Ellen? I could reel off another 20 questions about plot holes, but I'm bored now!

Awful
TheFugitiveRK16 March 2017
This has been done so many times before. See "The Kindness of Strangers" etc etc etc. Clichéd. Rubbish ending. Dragged out into 3 episodes, 1 would have done. Expect this kind of rubbish on ITV, not the BBC. Final episode was very predictable and the final scene was woeful.

Terrible..
sanjin_963215 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is terrible. Just awful. Nothing new here. An architect with some psychological issues in her past has to leave work due to being pregnant and hires a replacement.

After a while she notices that her replacement is trying to take over her role at the firm and she can't shake a bad feeling. Then her friend and boss dies in an supposed accident and the more she gets suspicious of 'the replacement' the more she alienates the ones around her.

As I said. Nothing new. Very predictable. And at times, very unbelievable plot outline. The only thing that kept me watching was McClure's ability (her crazy eyes) to play a psychotic secretive woman. The female lead (played by Morven Christie) was also good at playing another psychotic hormonal woman. That's about it. Two psychotic women going at each other with all they got. Passive aggressiveness, sarcasm, hurtful insinuations etc. Psycho games and schemes. Nothing anyone hasn't seen before.

That's why I give this a 4.0/10. This could've been better. I expect more from the BBC (even if this was filmed and produced in Scotland).

Feels like a six part series that got edited to three
fijayh27 May 2022
Despite a good cast, large chunks of this made little sense - almost as if they had removed sections during editing to cut it down. Had to fast forward at the end just to see what happened as couldn't keep watching.

Should've been longer - and the ending was poor
Stranger_Sins23 August 2022
I sort of liked it. I was leaning towards a 7 but instead I put a weak 6. But oh my God... the ending was so poor and underwhelming. How did they manage to screw that one up? Also, the series should've been longer. They could've dragged it out a bit (in a positive way) and built up the story and suspense a bit more.

A two-hour drama crammed into four hours.
richard_a_parry1 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A decent but well worn (predictable) plot that did character development quite well but plods along and then rushes the implausible finale.

Vicky McClure failed to impress me in Line of Duty, Trigger Point, or this. I admire her work in support of dementia/Alzheimer's causes; this is honourable and noble, but I find her acting credulous.

The rest of the cast acquit themselves better, if mostly predictably. The plot only leaves you wondering how it will arrive at obvious conclusions. Thats on the script writers.

The biggest frustration though comes at the end from a ridiculous escape requiring MacGyver skills the average person doesn't possess and the foot dragging credulous police suddenly and inexplicably putting it all together and saving the day in time for the news. Silly.

Meh. HOWEVER! Great shots of Glasgow!!
thejdrage1 August 2022
This is more of a Scottish Lifetime Movie. Very long. Too long.

I am not sure why I watched this, especially after reading all the negative reviews. I should have believed them.

This is the same thing you've seen many times before - trust me! Only with a crying baby.

It's almost as if someone took all the parts of their favorite Lifetime Movies and tossed them together into this and set it in Glasgow. That's the smartest thing they did. It's a unique city for films and series.

But basically, other than the scenery, this is a waste of time. IMHO.
