Though they've made a fraction of the box office of even the worst DC live-action movie, creatively the crown jewel of DC Comics adaptations lies in their animated movies. It's through animation that the potential of comic book adaptations really shines. Ever since "Superman: Doomsday" was released in 2007, we've had movies that faithfully adapt popular comics storylines (rather than just borrow the name for brand recognition and throw the rest away), original films with wild concepts, and even movies that build on continuity like the biggest cinematic universes.
This is one of the most interesting aspects of the DC animated movies, because there are two proper continuities, each building up characters and storylines and exploring giant crossovers in a way DC has not come even close to figuring out in live-action.
Given how little resources Warner Bros. have used to properly market this universe or make sure audiences are aware of its continuity,...

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

David S. Goyer is coming back to Gotham City to excavate more secrets from the Dark Knight’s psyche.
Goyer is the creator of “Batman Unburied,” a new podcast drama exploring “the darker aspects” of Bruce Wayne, to debut exclusively on Spotify in 2021. Goyer, who will executive produce the series, penned the story for 2005’s “Batman Begins” and was a writer for the two other films in “The Dark Knight” trilogy (among other superhero flicks).
It’s the first project under a multiyear pact inked by Spotify, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment for a line of narrative scripted podcasts, exclusively for the music and audio streamer. And it’s part of Spotify’s broader podcast push, which has included exclusive deals for shows from personalities ranging from the Obamas to Joe Rogan.
“Batman Unburied” will be developed and produced by Goyer’s Phantom Four production shingle in association with Warner Bros.

CW Seed has released a blood-soaked first look at their upcoming animated series Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons. This is a 12-episode original series that stars Michael Chiklis (The Shield) as Slade Wilson and as you’ll see, it doesn’t hold back on the blood and violence. It looks like it’ll be a wild and entertaining series!
The show comes from Constantine: City of Demons writer J.M. DeMatteis and Niko and the Sword of Light director Sung Jin Ahn. The story for the series sees Slade go up against Hive.
Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons follows in the tradition of CW Seed’s animated series Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Ten years ago, Slade Wilson — aka the super-assassin called Deathstroke — made a tragic mistake and his wife and son paid a terrible price. Now, a decade later, Wilson’s family is threatened once again by the murderous Jackal and the terrorists of H.

Following the cancellation of his eponymous series after only 13 episodes on NBC, Matt Ryan’s iteration of John Constantine has amazingly thrived over at The CW. Since first being welcomed into the fold during Arrow‘s fourth season, the demonologist migrated over to Legends of Tomorrow, and even headlined an animated film/web series in the form of Constantine: City of Demons. It’s also worth mentioning that Ryan voiced the character in Justice League Dark, though that project was unrelated to the Arrowverse.
Understandably, legions of viewers have wondered if indeed The CW will allow for Constantine to headline a series of his own yet again, this time under their roof. Regrettably, the network’s president, Mark Pedowitz said there have been no talks regarding doing any such thing while speaking at the recent TCA press event – but we’ll continue seeing the exorcist playing a prominent role on Legends of Tomorrow.

With San Diego Comic-Con kicking off in less than one week from the time of this writing, it’s a certainty that the internet is about to be flooded with news pertaining to the Arrowverse. But when it comes to Legends of Tomorrow specifically, don’t expect too much because that show isn’t returning until around the midseason mark.
On the plus side, we have something very positive to share today, as TV Line has been able to confirm that Matt Ryan will return as John Constantine for the DC series’ fifth season. And yes, he’ll remain on as a series regular.
To provide a bit of history, Ryan originally portrayed the exorcist in a series of his own, Constantine, before NBC cancelled it after only 13 episodes. But to the delight of pretty much everybody, he got scooped up by The CW in short order, and appeared in Arrow‘s fourth season.

Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, in partnership with DC, are currently in production on five new DC Showcase animated shorts for release in 2019-2020.
Inspired by characters and stories from DC’s robust portfolio, the all-new series of shorts will be included on upcoming DC Universe Movies releases, with exception of an innovative Batman: Death in the Family long-form animated short, which will anchor a compilation set for distribution in late 2020.
Each of the five shorts – entitled Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death, The Phantom Stranger and Batman: Death in the Family – opens with a new, live-action branding sequence that features a few Easter Eggs specially added for observant fans.
Sgt. Rock is executive produced and directed by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) from a script by award-winning comics writers Louise Simonson & Walter Simonson and Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen). The original tale finds battle-weary Sgt.

If you’ve been collecting DC animated movies for some time, then you probably remember the Showcase shorts from nearly a decade ago. For those unfamiliar, these truncated stories allowed for the likes of the Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow to shine alongside whichever feature film they complemented. Not long after, each were compiled on a separate home video release, Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam, which was considerably meatier than its brethren but still technically a short itself.
Now, after a lengthy hibernation, the concept has been resurrected. Soon enough, cult favorites such as Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death and the Phantom Stranger will stand next to whatever corresponding animated flicks Warner Bros. choose. And much like before, each of those will join a lengthier short in the form of Batman: Death in the Family in one handsome Blu-ray package later on in 2020.

One could say that the character of John Constantine has always enjoyed a certain level of cult popularity, but I think it’s fair to state that he’s been thrust to new heights ever since Matt Ryan took on the role in live action. After his eponymous TV series had been cancelled by NBC after only 13 episodes, Ryan continued playing the demonologist in the Arrowverse, first debuting on Arrow itself before becoming a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow. And if that weren’t enough, he’s even lent his pipes to a couple animated movies, those being Justice League Dark and Constantine: City of Demons.
Even after adding each of those to his impressive resume though, there’s still one box that Ryan wants to check off. While speaking at Wizard World Cleveland, he dropped a bombshell when revealing that he wants to appear on DC Universe’s...

As the devil himself knows, you just can’t keep John Constantine down.
Back in 2015, NBC announced that they weren’t going to renew Constantine for a second season. Fans were dismayed, immediately launching a campaign to save the show. Warner Bros seemed similarly eager to keep it going, attempting to get another network to pick it up. Both the fan and studio efforts failed, however, leading producer Daniel Cerone to comment:
“We’re leaving behind wild and passionate fans who believe in and were moved by what we tried to do. To leave such a significant, dedicated and active fan base on the table—that’s the real sadness. You all deserve many years of the series we set out to make, and we’re disappointed that we couldn’t deliver that to you.”

John Constantine, done right, is one of DC Comics’ strongest characters. The current incarnation in the Rebirth universe is a pale comparison to his Vertigo roots and the NBC series didn’t push the horrific elements far enough. Matt Ryan’s wonderful interpretation has been further watered down for the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, so hearing him in all his weary glory in Constantine: City of Demons is most welcome.
This is one of the best animated adaptations of a comic book character, thanks to letting it be an R-rated film ensuring the horror/supernatural elements were true to the source material and not just curse words tossed in for “authenticity”. Kudos to J.M. DeMatteis for bringing Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben’s character to proper life. For the second week of October, I hope horror fans have their wallets ready, because there are a multitude of Blu-rays and DVDs that would be perfect editions to your home entertainment collections, especially with All Hallows' Eve being just right around the corner. Hello, readers! October is only a few hours away now, and beyond the fact that most of us have been counting down to the official start of everyone’s favorite month, it also means that we have a brand new batch of horror and sci-fi releases to look forward to on digital and VOD platforms in the coming weeks.
Easily the busiest day of October (and possibly even all of 2018), there are 11 different movies hitting various platforms on October 2nd, with highlights including The First Purge, Tales From the Hood 2, Sleep No More and Molly. On October 5th, one of my favorite films of 2018, Heavy Trip, is making its digital debut, and Knuckleball, featuring Michael Ironside, comes home the same day as well.
Netflix is keeping very busy throughout October, too, with a variety of films and genre-related series that fans are certainly going to want to check out in the coming weeks.

Though many of you reading this no doubt lament NBC’s cancellation of Constantine to this day, you have to admit that its early demise certainly opened up a world of possibilities for the character. Had the plug not been pulled, the charismatic demonologist would’ve never been introduced into the Arrowverse, let alone granted a headlining gig in his own animated web series/movie, that being City of Demons.
Much like its predecessor in Vixen: The Movie, this adventure will air in prime time. In fact, you can expect it to debut on Monday, October 15 in the 9 pm Est slot, immediately following the season premiere of Arrow. What’s more is that we’ll get a sneak peek at Legends of Tomorrow‘s fourth season, which’ll kickoff one week later on October 22. In recent years, not only has it expanded into novels and comic books, but it’s also spilled over into the realm of animation by way of Vixen and Constantine: City of Demons.
Actually, there’s one very important offering sandwiched in between those two, and that’s Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Like its sister productions, it originally aired as a web series on the CW Seed streaming service, but has now been seamlessly cut together as a feature-length movie.
At face value, this appears to be a prequel to last fall’s DC TV crossover event, “Crisis on Earth-x,” which it essentially is, but it’s also so much more. As you may have figured, the central focus is placed on the Ray himself,...

Constantine has had his problems when it comes to bringing the character from the pages to the big screen. The character was brought to the big screen in a not-so-comic book accurate film in 2005 when he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves. He then had his own live-action series in 2014 which only lasted a season. Yet, fans still love him all the same. So much so that the character has been revived in comic book fashion and has appeared in the CW Arrow-verse throughout the past two years. Now the character is back in a dual-release of Constantine: City of Demons. Get all the details below.

Hellblazer is back with an all new, R-rated, animated film coming to blu-ray this October, and you can watch the first trailer right here.
If you remember, last year, Constantine got an animated webseries (which fit into DC Animation's Dark Universe continuity) on CW Seed that ran for five episodes. This new feature-length film is bringing all of that together, while giving it a fitting conclusion. Today, WB has announced the movie will arrive on blu-ray October 9th while also delivering a swanky trailer for fans to check out:

The CW has grand plans for “Batwoman” beyond this coming season. As previously announced, the character will appear in December during the network’s next DC crossover event, which includes “Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Supergirl.” But “Batwoman” is now also being developed as a separate series.
According to the CW, a casting notice is about to be released for the crossover — but since the network has designs on putting this character at the forefront of a new series, the development process had to be announced earlier than usual. The CW has sealed a script development deal with executive producer and writer Caroline Dries to come up with the series. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns (through his Mad Ghost Productions shingle) are also on board as executive producers on the project, which would come from Berlanti Prods. and Warner Bros. TV.
Here’s the logline: “Armed with a passion...

In light of recent events, I was thinking about how it’s kind of funny that the cancellation of Constantine’s eponymous TV series has actually been somewhat beneficial to the character. Yes, it completely sucks that such a fine show was cut short after only thirteen episodes, but now, the fans are sent into a frenzy any time he pops up in an Arrowverse series or animated movie. Basically, it’s an event of sorts.
Having said that, you can’t deny that notion has held true when it comes to his recent guest shots on Legends of Tomorrow. After being introduced at the tail end of the midseason finale, Matt Ryan’s iteration of the charismatic exorcist understandably has diehard and casual viewers alike taking notice, with a promotion to series regular slated for season 4.
And, if that weren’t enough, the CW Seed online streaming service recently launched City of Demons,...

At this year’s WonderCon, we got to sit down with the people behind CW Seed’s newest animated series, Constantine: City of Demons. The round table interview included John Constantine himself, Matt Ryan (who has played the character on the short-lived NBC series, on Arrow, in Justice League Dark, and on Legends of Tomorrow), series writer J.M. DeMatteis, and Peter Giardri, the vice president of Warner Bros. Animation and Blue Ribbon Content. We were first joined by DeMatteis, who told us about the process of adapting the specific comic book storyline into the CW Seed series. We asked if there was any great part of the original

This is a public service announcement for DC fans everywhere: Constantine: City of Demons is now available to watch on CW Seed.
As well as their smash-hit quartet of live-action superhero shows, The CW has been serving up a selection of animated webseries set in the same universe – colloquially known as the Arrowverse – for the past few years. We’ve had two seasons of Vixen, Freedom Fighters: The Ray landed last year and now Matt Ryan’s Hellblazer has got his own solo vehicle… for the first time since his NBC series was cancelled after one brief season back in 2014.
As Arrowverse fans will know, not long after Constantine wrapped up, Ryan was folded into The CW’s DC universe with a guest spot in Arrow season 4. Despite enormous support from viewers, the character didn’t return again until late last year, when he appeared in the final moments of...
