Identity Crisis

And just like that, the Arrowverse has returned. This year, it went by incredibly fast, and maybe that's because it's the first year in which I only found myself missing Arrow on a week to week basis. Supergirl has always been hit and miss for me. The show's tone strives for a younger audience, and mostly skews female. Which is perfectly fine. And with that said, I actually quite enjoyed this week's episode. A strong emotional weight was felt while also keeping the show on the lighter side so it never feels like a burden to go through. If this season stays on this pace, we could be in for the best season yet. (which isn't necessarily saying a lot).

Is it just me or is Melissa Benoist hair getting more and more blonde each season? Perhaps that's a coincidence or maybe it's a conscious choice by the producers to steer closer to the comic book character. Either way, it's just a small observation. Kara seems more mature in a way. She definitely had her moments, but I'm enjoying a Kara that has seen things and understands the world a little more. Even if that means having to go through a couple emotional pep talks along the way. I'd rather have that than her be completely oblivious.

Actually, one of the pep talks, with Alex, was very well written, and clearly acted by two actresses who are comfortable with each other. When Alex pleads with Kara to not give up on her secret idenitity as Kara Danvers, I actually felt some emotion. Similarly, I felt the weight of the moment when Alex asked Hank to walk her down the aisle. Both of these scenes are evidence of a show that has found its footing in terms of writing the interplay between characters. This wouldn't have been the case a few years ago.

This episode mostly dealt with the group dealing with Bloodsport and this season's human big bad (or one of them), Morgan Edge. I wasn't particularly fond of the Edge character, or at least how he was portrayed in this episode, but him, Lena, and Kara could be an interesting trio going forward. The other new character, Reign, seemed to be the more intriguing newcomer, since out of nowhere, she had super strength and was in one of Kara's dreams? Honestly not sure how that will be explained, but I'm invested as of now.

Super Duper...
vlaukin15 October 2017
After season 2, I pretty much had enough of Supergirl. It just seemed to be the same message being repeated over and over...yawn...But I had to at least watch the first episode, so glad I did! The writing and directing seems to have tightened up. Production and visuals are also pretty darn good. In one scene, we actually see the girl of steel, seemingly, for the first time. Well executed! Out of all the super duper TV shows this fall, ie: The Flash, Arrow, LOT, this was by far the best premier episode! So glad to have seen it...

Check it out and I'm hopeful for this new season.

Supergirl - S03E01 Girl of Steel

Warning: Spoilers
Supergirl is a series that I have had my fair share of ups and downs with. I thought last season overall was on the positive side despite having a mid season slump. With the positives I took from last season, I was very interested to see what they could produce in this season's premiere.

I thought this was a very solid return for Supergirl. Most of the problems I had with last season were story points so it was nice for them to be starting fresh and introducing new story elements.

An aspect of this episode I really did like was the inner conflict Kara had in dealing with Mon-El. While their story line wasn't my favourite last season, they did a good enough job in portraying what Mon-El meant to Kara so her attitude this episode is called for. While I'll admit I did have an "oh no" moment when we saw her attitude because I really disliked when Kara got on her Supergirl high horse last season, I felt that they handled it in a way that made sense. In past episodes, Kara has had a bad attitude for what seems like no reason at all, so to have a driving reason behind her behaviour really worked for me this episode.

Another thing this episode did well is some I think all premiere should do well and that is give use a reminder to where we are in the show. Show use where everyone is at in their lives and what has happened since we last saw them. I think this episode did this really well while still bringing in new components for the season to build off going forward.

Overall, while I don't think this is a perfect episode, it was a really good premiere for the season. After coming off what I think was a fairly good and bad season, they did enough in this episode to pull me back in and have faith in this season going forward.

Great start! 8.6/10

Warning: Spoilers
Great start to the season for me, much more positives than negatives this episode which isn't always the case for the Supergirl series. I didn't care too much for the whole thing with Kara being shut off from everyone because of the Mon-el situation and being a massive buzzkill especially when Kara quit her job, but that's pretty much the only thing negative I have for this episode. Overall I loved the action and the plot behind this episode, with Adrian Pasdar (Edge) taking the spotlight, thought he was phenomenal. The main battle scene with everything at the waterfront was really intense and it was good that it took that battle for Kara to realise that being shut off from everyone isn't the right move. Also Alex asking J'onn to walk her down the isle was a very touching moment. Initially I thought Odette Annabelle's role for the season would be a new hero, but upon viewing the last scene of the episode it's evident to me that she will grow into the villain of the season. Great start and hopefully this trend continues towards a higher quality season of Supergirl, 8.6/10

Warning: Spoilers
If there is one of the Arrowverse shows that have always been hit-or-miss for me, it has been this show. Sometimes, the writers are able to craft good stories and have some great character development and awesome arcs, but most of the time they completely hit the boat, and tries more to get hamfist the message at you, instead of coming up with something clever and memorable. And I actually did enjoy most of the previous season, even though I came away from it a little disappointed. I was optimistic that this would do something to give me a little excitement for the upcoming episodes, but once again, I was treated to a middle-of-the-road episode, with some cool references and good action scenes, but a lackluster sense of story and some horrible decision making on the showrunners' side. First of all, I will say that there were a few things I liked about the episode, and most of it was the potential for the story going forward. This episode offered a lot of teases to what is to come, and some things that really did get me excited about the future. It did its job of welcoming us back into this world and giving us the characters that we love, as well as serving up some fresh characters that will have a big part to play in the upcoming episodes. The introduction of Reign, I thought was particular good, because they set up her up as a character that has things to lose, and her daughter is probably going to play into how she ultimately becomes Reign. I also enjoyed how they changed up some of the characters from the last season, especially how they treated James Olsen in the premiere. His character went far off the side during last season when he decided to become a vigilante himself, but I think they did a great job of subtly pushing that part of his character to the side, and focus more on the normal everyday guy, which is what made me like him in the first season. Now, on to the things that I didn't like and there is a lot of things. First of all: this story that they are going with including Kara mourning over Mon-El and not knowing if she wants to be Kara or Supergirl, is insanely stupid. I do understand that you need time to get over something like that, but this is six months after the Season 2 finale, so there have been a lot of time where you had the change to get over these things, but of course, because it is a CW show, we need to get that drama in there, just for the sake of it being there. And the reused plot point from "Arrow" about the identity crisis, just doesn't work for this character, so they need to drop that. I also highely disliked the antagonists of the episode. I hated their motivations (because there was none) and I hated how they used Morgan Edge in this episode. His entire plan made no sense and while what happened to him at the end was funny, it didn't help with the fact that his role in this entire episode just felt wasted by the end. And I really like Adrian Pasdar, and I think he gave a fine performance, but this is not the strongest character for him to play. I hope they reconsider their tactics with him, and find some better use of his character, and definitely also his role in the show.
