What a year it has been for the biggest streamer in the world.
While the first half of the year was largely known for its widely seen star-studded critical failures, the second half of the year brought many successes. From a hit franchise blockbuster to multiple awards season contenders, Netflix’s year in films was turned around completely and may help them garner some hardware as we march towards the Oscars in March.
While this list may not represent the most-watched films of the year, I believe these to be the best Netflix had to offer over the past 12 months.
So, without further ado, here are my Top 5 Netflix Original Movies of 2023.
Please note that this author has not seen Best International Feature contender, Society of the Snow, as it will not be on Netflix until 1/4/24. This list will also not consider the Wes Anderson/Roald Dahl short...

The new horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was dubbed “Dracula on a Boat” by social media users, and the twist on the chapter from Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel definitely did deliver on the premise of the age-old vampire feasting on the crew of an unlucky ship.
Introducing a monster of any kind — alien, werewolf, zombies — to a vehicle that can’t stop and can’t let anyone off is a tried-and-true horror formula. Here are some of the movies where the combo of “creature” + “claustrophobic form of transportation” worked and some where it ran aground.

Apple TV+’s hit limited series “Hijack” starring Idris Elba is a nail-biting thrill ride set in real-time. Over the years, there have been many types of hijack films. Besides planes, there have been suspenseful takeovers of ships, trains, subways and even trucks.
“The Taking of the Pelham One Two Three,” from 1974 — avoid the two remakes — is a superb thriller about four men who take over a New York subway car and hold the passengers, conductor and an undercover policeman hostage unless they get $1 million (remember that was a lot of money 49 years ago). If their demands aren’t met, they will start killing hostages. Directed by Joseph Sargent and adapted by Peter Stone from the best-selling novel by John Godey, “Taking” boasts a stellar cast at the top of their game including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Hector Elizondo and Martin Balsam. This week’s new horror releases bring The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It features the iconic vampire at his most monstrous as he lurks about the schooner and preys upon the passengers and crew. Thanks to Dracula, much of cinema’s portrayal of the vampire leans romantic; their predatory tactics are often seductive, masking their monstrous nature until far too late. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to monstrous vampires, the vicious bloodsuckers unafraid to show off their inner creature. These vampires are vicious in their kills and showcase great creature designs.

Netflix is getting into the "let's kill Nazis violently" sub-genre of World War II films with the upcoming "Blood & Gold." This movie may not be on your radar just yet, but it seems like the kind of title that is destined to build up some buzz once it arrives on the streaming service next month. To that end, a new trailer for the German war flick has been released online that offers an extremely fun look at what promises to be a murder-heavy tale of revenge.
What's particularly entertaining about this "special trailer" is that it gives the film an old-school, grindhouse makeover that gives us a little bit of a Quentin Tarantino flavor, with "Inglorious Basterds" being the obvious touchstone. But it feels more at home with the fake trailers that were attached to 2007's "Grindhouse," even though this is a very real movie that you can watch in just a few weeks.

Exclusive: Momo, one of the best-loved works by The Neverending Story scribe Michael Ende, is getting a big-canvas, English-language screen adaption from leading German producer Christian Becker and bilingual writer-director Christian Ditter (How To Be Single).
The ambitious movie version of Ende’s popular fantasy novel will chart the story of the eponymous Momo, an orphan girl who must do battle with the soulless and otherworldly ‘grey men’ who stealthily take over her city and steal time. Ende’s book has long been considered a critique of consumerism, stress and unfeeling individualism, themes that should strongly resonate in a contemporary context.
Published in more than 40 languages, this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the book’s first publication and producers are hoping to begin filmmaking towards the end of 2023.

Barcelona-based studio Filmax has closed first major territory deals on writer-director Paul Urkijo “Irati,” a new addition to movies which have drawn on the history and legends of the Basque Country in the north of Spain, which have provided rich pickings for Spanish film-makers such as Julio Medem (“Cows”) and Alex De la Iglesia (“Witching & Bitching”).

Fans of weird and eerie German movies, rejoice! Your Halloween spooky viewing has arrived, and it's carved out a steady spot in Netflix's Top 10 trending watches. "Old People" is German-Romanian filmmaker Andy Fetscher's horror thriller wherein the old eat the young, bludgeon them, and sometimes vomit on them. It's the sort of concept that M. Night Shyamalan would have a field day with, but Fetscher adds more chaos and a cadre of monsters at the door.
A title card at the opening reads:
In times of yore, an avenging spirit was thought to inhabit old people. A dark power that took possession of the frailest members of the clan and drive them into a seemingly blind rage.
That's right – this is functionally an elderly rage-zombie movie. What a time to be alive.
At its core, the story focuses on generational disconnect by observing lonely elders, excluded from local festivities,...

One can’t watch a film like “Medieval” without imagining yourself in a fantastic position. No, you wouldn’t want to be a character in the movie, that’s for sure; they live lives of constant violence, exploitation and conspiracy. But to be one of the Foley artists working on a film with this many brutal battles — clanking on armor, scraping on chain mail, rustling through fresh leaves — that sounds like a delightful time.
“Medieval” struggles as a work of historical fiction, but when the action mounts, it’s immersive and exciting. Ben Foster stars as real-life soldier and strategist Jan Žižka, a Czech national hero who is said to have never lost a battle. The film takes place in Žižka’s relatively early days, when he was working as a mercenary for Lord Boreš (Michael Caine), who is trying to secure the throne of the Holy Roman Emperor for King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia,...

Following the international acclaim of “Babylon Berlin,” XFilme Creative Pool, in partnership with Beta Film, debuted excerpts from its newest drama series, “House of Promises,” scoring on Sunday MipDrama’s prestigious Buyers’ Coup de Couer Award.
The 12-part drama, directed by the reputed Sherry Hormann (“Desert Flower”) and Umut Dag (“Vienna Blood”) for bullishly growing SVOD service Rtl Plus, centers on its female protagonists, giving breath to their histories and the tide-shift taking place in the ‘20s that allowed them to chase their passions and ambitions fiercely.
“House of Promises” is the female perspective of the Golden 20s. The center of our series isn’t only a love story, it’s about love on all levels. Romantic love, love within a family. It’s about the failure of love, about friendship and love between women,” Hormann notes.
“Our vision is to dive into daily life at this time. Telling facts...

In one of the biggest swings in Europe’s market, Erik Barmack, the former Netflix VP of international originals, is teaming with Benjamin Munz, producer of “Blood Red Sky,” Netflix’s most-watched non-English movie of all time, on a tentpole high-speed German action film, “The Chase.”
Billed by Barmack as “‘The Fast and the Furious’ meets ‘Money Heist’” – which he helped bring to Netflix – “The Chase” marks the first movie out of the gate at Munz’s Berlin-based new label, Fright Zone, the first production company in Germany that will focus exclusively on developing and producing fantasy, action, horror and science fiction films as well as TV shows in and from Germany.
Overseen by founder and CEO Munz, Fright Zone will produce with Barmack, who is now working out of his own L.A. label, Wild Sheep Content, a company that he started with The Mediapro Studio, headed by Laura Fernández Espeso.

Netflix is snapping up premiere visual-effects house Scanline VFX, announcing a deal to acquire the company that has done work on Netflix originals like “Stranger Things” as well as tentpole movies for Marvel, DC and others.
Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022, subject to regulatory approvals and other usual closing conditions.
Netflix said it will operate Scanline VFX as a standalone business that will continue to work with a variety of clients. Founded in 1989 in Munich, Scanline VFX also operates locations in Los Angeles, London, Vancouver, Montreal, Stuttgart and Seoul.
It’s the second major M&a deal in the VFX space this month, after game-development software vendor Unity said it will buy Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital technology and tools business for $1.625 billion.

Vampires haunt modern-day Los Angeles in director Adam Randall’s Netflix horror film Night Teeth. Sprawling with glamour and style, the city of angels is on display in this fast-paced, campy thriller. There aren’t many scares here, and it doesn’t cover any new ground, but it makes up for that with a grounded story full of high tension and likable characters.
Vampires tried to take over the city of L.A., but Boyle heights (a historic neighborhood in Los Angeles), fought back against a Vampire take over, so humans and Vampires formed a truce. This was supposed to be a lasting Truce until Victor (Alfie Allen), a vampire middleman, started to kill off Vampire leaders. “Jungle Cruise” with Dwayne The Rock Johnson was the third most-viewed movie in Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for the week that closed out July, despite debuting as a Disney+ Premier Access title.
Nielsen says the Disney adventure film was watched for 343 million minutes during the week of July 26 through August 1 (it debuted on July 30), with Nielsen saying a third of the film’s audience came from the 35-49 year old crowd. But it fell behind the Pixar film “Luca,” (371 million minutes) which has remained consistently popular each week since its June debut, and a foreign language Netflix film called “Blood Red Sky.”
With 387 million minutes viewed, the horror-thriller “Blood Red Sky” topped Nielsen’s streaming rankings for original films this week after debuting on July 23. It suggests that many foreign language Netflix titles seem to do well for the streamer. Though it wasn’t strong enough to crack the Top 10 of streaming titles overall.

Netflix drama Virgin River spent a second straight week atop Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart, in a subdued period when it was the only title to draw more than 1 billion minutes of viewing.
With 30 episodes in circulation, the series collected almost 1.3 billion viewing minutes, besting Manifest, which had 939 million. The tallies were down notably from the prior week, when Virgin River had 2.1 billion minutes and Manifest roughly 1.3 billion.
The latest numbers are from the week of July 19 to 25. Nielsen tracks streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+, releasing the stats about a month later, by arrangement with the streaming providers. Only viewing via a TV set is counted, meaning no mobile activity is reflected.
In terms of new blood on the chart, the second season of Never Have I Ever, which premiered July 15, came in sixth. It had 567 million minutes of viewing across its 20 episodes. A third...

Exclusive: Blood Red Sky is set to be Netflix’s most successful German content to date, film or TV, with more than 50 million households around the world projected to watch the film by next week. That surpasses the historical series Barbarians, which previously held the record.
The plane hijacking / vampire film only released on July 23 and will reach the benchmark within its its first 28 days on the platform.
In addition to its global audience figures – which saw an average of 90% of viewers watch the entire two-hour runtime – the film has also reached the top 10 in 93 countries, hitting the number one spot in 57 including the U.S., Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines. It has actually been more of an international hit than a German one, having only reached no.2 in its native country, though notably the film is primarily in English, with portions in German.

“F9” (Universal/$19.99) is #1 on all four VOD charts we follow. It leads both on FandangoNow and Vudu, which list by rental revenue, and iTunes and Google Play, which rank by volume of renters. That suggests total dominance of home interest, but there’s a big caveat with “Jungle Cruise,” which opened #1 at the box office. It’s also available on Disney+ for $29.99 and the studio reported worldwide PVOD revenue of over $30 million for its first weekend. How much of that came from the U.S.is unclear, but the guess is most since VOD penetration is still lacking overseas.
Universal typically allows three weeks before opening the PVOD box office, but “F9” is the studio’s first title to wait five weeks. It grossed over $50 million on its opening weekend and under Universal’s agreement with theaters that meant a minimum 31 days for VOD.

In a week that saw three theatrical releases debut on Premium VOD, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$19.99) won the battle. The ensemble action comedy sequel took first place on all four charts we follow, despite competition from “The Forever Purge” (Universal/$19.99) and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (Warner Bros./$19.99).
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.
More significantly, “Hitman’s” displaced “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) after just one week as top film. That’s a bit of a surprise; John Krasinski’s hit grossed as much as “Purge,” Conjuring,” and “Hitman’s” combined, and “Hitman’s” grossed the least with $37 million.
That also may mean that the “Hitman’s” audience wasn’t as thoroughly tapped. The audience demo...
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.

The studio pitch and mile-high concept of “Blood Red Sky”— “it’s ‘Snakes on a Plane’ with vampires, and a terrorist hijacking!”—is intriguing, potentially twistedly funny, and surely enough for Netflix to gamble on. Sadly, for filmmaker Peter Thorwarth, “Blood Red Sky” cannot live up to its core idea, not in a way that amplifies its outrageously wacky premise, nor in a way that makes it even a mildly entertaining watch.

Coming to Netflix on July 23rd is Blood Red Sky, a compelling horror / thriller set on a passenger plane with some incredible performances and practical makeup effects! I recently had the opportunity to speak with director and co-written by Peter Thorwarth, who told me about the origins of this project, working with Peri Baumeister, and bringing the movie's vampire to life:
I wanted to start by learning more about the origins of this project. What sparked this idea for a horror movie set on a passenger flight?
It started when I was sitting on a transatlantic night flight. I was staring out the window and was thinking, "Okay, if I were a vampire, I’d have to organize myself, and take a night flight. When this gets hijacked, and the hijackers turn the plane around and fly backwards towards the rising sun, I have a problem."
Then I started thinking,...

In the new Netflix film from director/co-writer Peter Thorwarth, Blood Red Sky, two things become eminently clear early on: there are a hijackers onboard a red eye flight from Germany to America; and there’s a vampire, Nadja (Peri Baumeister), amongst the passengers as well. And the only things keeping her from feasting on those around […]

In the grand tradition of “Deep Rising” and “From Dusk Till Dawn,” Peter Thorwarth’s “Blood Red Sky” is a hijacking thriller that — at just the right moment — is suddenly hijacked itself, as the bad guys realize that they’re in a very different movie than the one for which they signed up. Except that “Blood Red Sky” doesn’t find just the right moment; this undercooked, overlong piece of genre-blurring German schlock hardly even seems to look for it. On the contrary, this midsummer Netflix release drops its big twist with all the panache of an incidental detail, one that requires too much backstory and offers too little excitement in return. And so what could’ve been a fun chimera that someone Frankensteined together from two wildly different films instead becomes

After a few relatively quiet months in the late spring and early summer, things are finally starting to heat up on Netflix, as the streaming giant complements its must-see TV lineup (“I Think You Should Leave!” “Too Hot to Handle: Brazil!”) with its most exciting original film project in a minute: Leigh Janiak’s “Fear Street Trilogy.” Beyond that, Netflix’s July slate is highlighted by the Karen Gillan/Michelle Yeoh action spectacle “Gunpowder Milkshake,” the star-studded Jojo Moyes adaptation “The Last Letter from Your Lover,” and a massive assortment of unseen international titles that run the gamut from Germany’s “Blood Red Sky” (about a plane hijacking interrupted by vampires) to Indonesia’s “A Perfect Fit”.
