Test of Patience
kinshuk-gaur4 August 2018
If Hindi movie filmmakers keep on making such insipid movies like Fanney Khan it will not do any good for the Hindi cinema. Atul Manjrekar debut as a director also credits for screenplay is a failure in both departments.

The movie is an official remake of a Belgian movie (If it has to be remake a better movie could have been adapted) but does not help its cause.

Story is about a days gone by struggling artist who wants to make her daughter a successful singer. The movie does not have any originality and the execution is also not up to the mark.

The only saving grace is Anil Kapoor and the girl who plays his daughter. Talented actor like Rajkumar Rao is wasted. Aishwarya looks attractive but overacts in some scenes though she does not have much to do.

Music is average. I am so exhausted after watching this movie that don't feel like writing more. Do not waste your money and if you are a fan of Anil Kapoor please wait to watch when it gets screened on the television.

Missing the mark and going wayward
msunando6 August 2018
Fanney Khan - to be a star and a celebrity artist is not easy in a country with a billion people and needs hard work and focus. Fanney Khan is the story of a man who didn't quite make the cut having had to sacrifice his dreams for the more important responsibility of life and family. He still nurses his creative side when he finds time from his crane operating job and sees his dream stay alive in his daughter Lata. Lata is talented but faces body-shamers bullying her constantly as she is obese, which stands in her way of recognition. Also, she finds her father annoying and is easily embarrassed due to his intrusive (actually concern) nature. Do you see a maze of subjects here already? Add to it a strange twist - Fanney Khan will go to any length to find success for his daughter's singing career, and will kidnap a celebrity singer for ransom, a case where he will transform from being a perpetrator into being manipulated by some sly bounty hunters.

It's just too many subjects to handle - director Atul Manjrekar is clearly unable to balance things out. After the interesting first 30 minutes, the film just loses its way and meanders in a wayward fashion, failing to engage. Rajkumar Rao is underused and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan misses yet another opportunity to up her game, keeping things superficial and plastic. The end is preachy. Debutante Pihu Sand as Lata is very impressive. But the film belongs to Anil Kapoor, who infuses exceptional energy and life into the role of a doting family man. He is clearly the only asset of Fanney Khan. Also must mention Divya Dutta who also produces a punchy performance. 4 STARS okay for it.

A important movie for parents.
Feel-the-truth14 October 2018
The movie was below average, the star cast were sincere and tried their best.

As i watched the movie i realised there is an imortant parental message in the movie. The movie is essentially a story of a daughter, mother and father. The parents are poor yet have they have totally spoilt their daughter. She disrespects her fatber at every stage and the mother defends here by blaming the father for upsetting her. The father tries everything in the world to keep his daughter happy and to fulfil her dreams, to the point where he resorts to kidnapping. The daughter is totally rude, spending money and taking loans to buy dresses without asking for consent from the bill payer. At the end this spoilt, rude child makes it.

This is message of this movie. Like i said a pathetic movie somewhat tolerable due to a 1st class set of actors.

Very bad story
shailendravermag-120609 November 2018
This story is pathetic. Story is setting example of taking bad path for success and getting it using this movie. How actors like Aishwarya and Anil Kapoor can work in such type of movies.

Something similar is shown in Secret Superstar, a film by Aamir Khan, clearly visible quality or work.

Bad story, bad message, setting wrong example, hate it. I wasted my time on it. Writing this review so I can save some else's time.

Ooof Too lame!!!
astarte-876055 August 2018
Honestly, India hides behind so much mediocrity and worse under the name of "family entertainer". Yes because family entertainer is all about hinting little girls how couch casting *might* become important in their careers. There are so many plot holes in this god-awful film, it is an insult to common sense. And can India cut the lame melo-dramatic nonsense, we are tired of it. If we wanted to watch a melo-dramatic movie, we would have watched something from the 90's. Indian audiences deserve much better.

Capsule Review: Fanney Khan
nairtejas8 August 2018
I don't know if I should take Atul Manjrekar's Fanney Khan seriously or lightly. On one hand it shows the struggle of a man (Anil Kapoor) who wants his daughter to be a star singer while on the other it resorts to screwball comedy to make me laugh. These two shades of this comedy drama hardly blend, while also giving me withdrawal symptoms. A lack of logic in the plot - starting from the point where the man kidnaps a famous singer (Aishwarya Rai) to the climax - pushes Fanney Khan into a territory that can be best defined as contrived storytelling. Everything is easy for director Manjrekar's characters, and thanks to some brilliant performances by Kapoor, Divya Dutta, and Girish Kulkarni, it feels effortless. I am also not sure what the non-righteous climax is trying to convey - is it okay to be bad when you are fighting for a good cause? Is it okay to break the law and put someone's life in danger just because you are a naive, old man passionate about your daughter's future? Ridiculous as it seems, Fanney Khan ends like a fairytale without even shedding light into what happened to some of the characters. The only thing that it gets right is criticizing the notion that stardom is usually a product of luck and compromise, as it poses as a question in front of the man's daughter (Pihu Sand) several times, yet Rai's character sabotages it in one scene by taking a defensive when the man asks her the same question. Director Manjrekar is ahead of himself, in trying to compete with Advait Chandan's Secret Superstar (2017), in trying to show the dark world and politics of the music industry, in fighting taboos related to body shapes and stardom, yet the container he uses to serve his dish made me look at my family members and shrug. No, really. There's a scene sometime in the 15th minute where Kapoor's character mimics to an instrumental in front of his wife and daughter. It's a great screwball moment, inducing no laughter, but that's exactly when I turned to my mum and dad and we all shrugged referring to the dull madness that is happening on screen. Don't waste your time. TN.

A Talented Cast Wasted By Poor Direction & a Loopholed Plot
msdianforever6 August 2018
There are a few films where you get to see classy actors like Anil Kapoor and Rajkumar Rao together but acting alone cannot save a film. This is exactly the case with 'Fanney Khan'. A father trying to make his daughter a big name in the industry might sound interesting to begin with but Atul Manjrekar has messed it all up. The screenplay and the direction are by far awful. It's a story that could've been so much more but an underwhelming execution by the crew has ended up in sheer disappointment. The film is dragged and has a lot of loopholes, there is no such aspect in the film that engages the audience apart from Anil Kapoor's performance. Anil Kapoor is definitely the only good thing in the film. His act is what made me sit through this whole film. Rajkumar Rao was expected to have an impact as usual but the script doesn't let him come out of his shell and he is not utilized properly. Aishwarya is okay-ish with her performance, she looks pretty but that doesn't hide the fact that she does overact in quite a few scenes The music is decent but the story is so boring that you wouldn't be interested in the songs. Overall, the film is a complete waste of talent and money. SKIP IT

Fanney Khan could have created more impact
binducherungath5 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Fanney Khan, a film by debutant Atul Manjrekar, generates mixed emotions. Similar to the distorted spelling in the title, the screenplay seems distorted at places due to not-so-believable plots with less of logic in place; but one can certainly connect with the film. One can give the benefit of doubt to the film for its genre being comedy. The film Fanney Khan represents lot of such people, who dare to see dreams but find them unfulfilled as well. Then they see the same dream through their children. There is nothing wrong in this, but the desperation to achieve the same may prompt them to cause some blunders. There are also scenes of body shaming. One vital question which is raised in the film is whether it is necessary to be star? In spite of having a great cast, the film fails to create the impact it could have made. The film begins with the narration by Rajkummar Rao who explains about Fanney Khan, a person with whom everybody enjoys. The Titular character is played by Anil Kapoor, who is Prashant Sharma aka Fanney Khan. He is an artist by passion but had to join a factory for his job. Divya Dutta enacts the role of Kavita Sharma, Fanney Khan's wife. She is shown to be a simple lady. Adhir, a younger colleague of Fanney Khan, is played by Rajkummar Rao. Fanney Khan is determined to make her daughter Lata (Pihu Sand) a known singer just like the celebrity singer Baby Singh aka Sumitra (Aishwarya Rai). The challenge with Lata is that she is obese which did result in humiliating comments from the audience, whenever she went on stage to sing and perform. Fanney Khan and Kavita act as strong support systems for their daughter. Fanney khan chooses a short cut to earn money so as to be able to get Lata's dream come true. But things go awry. Certain scenes are absolutely unexplainable. Daughter Lata's irritation with her father Fanney Khan is not at all justified. A celebrity is being kidnapped, but with occasional news clippings, no other actions are taken in this regard. Screenplay does not focus much on Lata's character. Kavita is always shown to be very understanding and tolerant, in fact, this character is also not well explored. Aishwarya and Rajkummar are looking good on screen together but their chemistry was explored very little in the film. Pihu does justice to her role as Lata. Girish Kulkarni as Baby Singh's manager excels, but again he had not much to do. The film is supposed to be based on music, but except the climax song 'Tere Jaisa Tu Hai.......' the other songs don't leave much impact. There is another song with the names of a few of the famous films, it seemed interesting. In spite of having a great cast, the film fails to create the impact it could have made. Still, one can watch the film.

This movie is awful.. People should stay away from this movie if they want to save their money and time.... The plot has so many loopholes, that you fail to understand whats going on...Except for Anil Kapoor and the new girl Pihu Sand, the rest of the cast are meh.... The songs are no good and for a movie based on music,it serves no purpose..........

Must watch family entertainer.
npathak-353984 August 2018
A sincere effort should not be critizised. The script or the writing may be a little weak but overall it's superb on acting & entertainment front.

"Bhavna ko samjho"-"Respect the feelings".

It's a clean & good family entertainer after a long time.

Fanney Khan is a sincere attempt made to showcase the love of a dotting father for her daughter & up to what extents he can go to fulfill her dreams of becoming a successful singer.

We all have many dreams but dont have such Fanney Khans in our lives who help us fulfil them.

Hats off the "The Legend" Anil Kapoor who carries the movie through. It's a treat to watch him act onscreen. Always he is "A" rate. Other actors are also good & do their parts pretty well & so is the music.

Despite few flaws here & there Fanney Khan is certainly a watchable affair

I suggest go & watch with your family in theatre near you..

laced with illogical plot and a lot of loose ends.....
fillerruth3 August 2018
FANNEY KHAN is an official remake of the Belgian film IEDEREEN BEROEMD aka EVERYBODY'S FAMOUS. While the original film was shorter and had dark comedy, thereby maximizing impact, FANNEY KHAN on the other hand moves at its own pace and is too melodramatic. While this may work for some, others might find it unconvincing. Atul Manjrekar, Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal's screenplay is lackluster at places but scores at a few places. Hussain Dalal, Abbas Dalal, Jasmeet K Reen and Athar Nawaz's dialogues are simple but quite funny in some scenes.

Atul Manjrekar's direction could have been better and that in turn would have made the film better. There's no doubt that he handled some scenes exceptionally well. However, at many places, he loses the plot. The storyline is quite illogical in the first place and it needed an expert hand to ensure the film works logically. Unfortunately, Atul partly fails in his endeavour.

FANNEY KHAN has a decent commencement and sets the mood of the film. The introduction of characters however is not that impressive. The track of Adhir and Jinal (Swati Semwal) however is interesting. The film picks up thankfully once the kidnapping takes place. The manner in which Fanney Khan and Adhir make futile attempts to scare Baby Singh makes for a great watch. In the second half, the film drops again and hooks viewers only towards the end. The climax would be loved by a section of viewers as its quite moving. But some might find it too illogical.

The performances however are too good, thereby helping the film. Anil Kapoor is in a great form and is the soul of the movie. The emotional scenes work thanks to him. One can feel his pain and one can't help but hoot for him even when one knows that what he did isn't right. Rajkummar Rao genuinely puts his best foot forward and is endearing. He raises laughs in the kidnapping scene. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks like a million bucks and adds a lot to the film with her supporting role. Pihu Sand seems a bit irritating at places but she makes up for it with her touching performance in the climax. Divya Dutta (Kavita) is dependable as always. Girish Kulkarni as usual plays the negative part quite well. Satish Kaushik (Kadar bhai) has an interesting part but is wasted. Barbie Rajput (Rhea), Swati Semwal and Asif Basra are decent.

The songs are appropriate for the sequences in which they appear but could have better since the film is essentially a musical. 'Achche Din' is the best of the lot. 'Tere Jaisa Tu Hai' comes next and it comes at a crucial juncture. 'Mohabbat' serves as a fair introduction for Aishwarya. 'Fu Bai Fu' has interesting lyrics. 'Halka Halka' is the most unconvincing portion of the film as it shows a prominent singer, whose kidnapping has shaken the entire nation, roaming around freely! Tubby - Parik's background score goes well with the various moods of the film.

S Tirru's cinematography is quite effective. Ajay Vipin's production design however is nothing great although it works in the house scenes of Fanney Khan. Monisha R Baldawa's editing is passable. Eka Lakhani and Manish Malhotra's costumes are appealing, especially the ones worn by Aishwarya.

Flop boring plot. It seems like a movie from 80s or 90s. Don't waste your time and money. Aishwarya Rai can't act and she doesn't look pretty now.

Boring movie with 90s plotline. It is a remake of a Belgian movie. The songs are all remixes of old songs. Aishwarya should stop embarrassing, she is a horrible actor and her makeup dependent beauty can't compete with current actresses like Katrina, Disha, Kiara, Deepika.

Fanney Khan Review
Magow-Intermean31 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
He couldn't become Mohammad Rafi, but harbours a dream of his daughter becoming Lata Mangeshkar. Prashant Sharma (Anil Kapoor) popularly known as Fanney Khan among his gulley friends, works hard to make ends meet, idolises Shammi Kapoor and lives only for his dream of superstardom. Now in her teens, Lata not only sings well but also dances like a dream despite her plus size that regularly makes her an object of body shaming on stage. Anil Kapoor hits all the right notes as a beleaguered father, who is often reprimanded by his own child for being so unflinchingly dedicated in his mission to see her succeed. This even as his wife Kavita (Divya Dutta) continues to be his empathetic voice of reason. As a debutante, Pihu Sand captures the vulnerability of her character, but one never understands her constant grouse against her father. As the hotshot singer Baby Singh, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks befittingly gorgeous, but her storyline is etched without much effort or logic. The talented Rajkummar Rao as Prashant's trusted friend Adhir, shows his usual flair within a limited scope. While Rajkummar's chemistry with Aishwarya seems forced, his comic timing comes to the rescue. Film's narrative goes slightly out of tune in second half. For example, there is no real backstory for Baby Singh and the only person in her life is a creepy manager, who wants her to stage a wardrobe malfunction for a reality show. While the second half is long and laborious, earnest performances keep the boat afloat. For a musical, Fanney Khan's soundtrack doesn't live up fully except the Achche Din song which is pleasant and the finale song that exudes energy. Overall, 'Fanney Khan' is a star studded musical that starts on a high note and has its moments of glory. It shows how parents live their dreams through children. However, the showstopper is clearly Anil Kapoor with a knockout performance that makes 'Fanney Khan' worth a watch.
