I Died
nogodnomasters15 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a man killing his wife and child. We find out later he killed himself with a gun, which didn't make much sense considering the plot. A family subsequently moves into the house and it isn't long for the evil spirits to come out. It seems this guy named Lucifer works out of a shack on Elm Lake. There is a book with a leather cover made to look old....as old as Polaroids. The spiritualist didn't fit into the plot very well. In addition to this guy Lucifer causing issues, the family has its own problems as they are attempting to start over.

This looks like a film I have seen a half dozen times before. The characters and dialogue needs to step up in these me-too satanic house hauntings. Poorly written script.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity.

Missed opportunity
africe6 August 2019
This movie had so many chances to be half decent. Although the acting was subpar the story could have saved it. But nope! The story fell into sad attempts to be scary and only ended up a letdown. Not sure why I keep giving these movies a chance...must be a glutton for punishment hahaha

Loud noises do not equal scary
philoj9 October 2017
Weak cookie-cutter horror movie that's been done many times before. Previous owner did bad things, new owners experience violent "echoes" of the prior events. The "horror" consists mostly of some gore and jump scares, but to me the worst part of the movie was that the director seems to think that prolonged loud, jarring noises (screams, music- like cacophony, screams, and screams) make for a scary movie.

They don't, and this isn't scary - it's aggravating and annoying. I actually fast-forwarded through many of them.

Otherwise, the movie is just a retread.

If this was the remake with budget, how bad was the original?
spwd14 September 2017
As the summary says, if this is the better version with a budget, i dread to think how bad the original was. I actually wondered if i was watching the original, its Absolutely shockingly bad, do not waste your time, bad acting, bad effects, well bad everything. I watched a good portion of the film hoping it would get better, but no it doesn't, so i turned it off. Cant believe i paid £5.50 for this.

Trite themes and horrible acting
davelink-9079430 September 2017
This movie is absolutely terrible. Do not waste your time watching it. The acting is atrocious and the story line has been done a thousand times over. It is basically a poor man's amityville horror. I would write a longer review, but this movie is not even worth a second more of my time; that is how bad it is.

It deserves a 0
christiannelite12 May 2018
It was poorly produced, poorly directed, the movie is the worst. I wish I could get back the 26.4 minutes it took from my life. I felt like it was going to turn into a low budget porno movie, right before I almost pulled out my eyelashes from the acting that caused twitching in both my eyes. Hope this is helpful. If you're into self torture, go for it. If you value your time and your self worth, skip it.

Ok bye

Old ideas, new second rate actors
davey18417 September 2017
The story starts of okay, if not predictable. Following the theme of doomed homes'past murders here, DO NOT MOVE INTO THIS HOUSE'. Unfortunately after 10 minutes of the movie, the house has new tenants. The actors/actresses from the start are of a very poor standard. It does not improve. They seem like they are part of a haunted house reality program on daytime television and should really rethink their careers. There are some moments that make you jump, but only because the music gets louder. Without using spoilers, this film progresses into nothing after an Amityville style beginning. If you watch the first 10 minutes and have a feeling of DeJa Vu. Then no need to continue with the movie as you have already seen the plot, film beginning and end. But, most probably with better actors in scores of other movies.

Not sure why this movie was made
JShaft3311 November 2018
There were a couple of creepy spots, but the movie as a whole was very questionable. The story, acting, delivery, script, stupid voice effects - all annoying and not to my liking. Also - why did the old man have to be without his clothes?

When you can't decide between horror movie spin-offs.

Freddy Krueger? Maybe. Jason? Sounds pretty cool. House at the end of the Street? THAT'S IT! All three!

Dreadfully boring...
paul_haakonsen27 December 2018
All I knew about "House on Elm Lake" was that it was a horror movie, and that was the sole reason for why I decided to sit down and watch it. Well, or at least the 1 hour of it that I managed to endure before turning the movie off.

I was ready to turn it off after 40 minutes, but decided to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and hoped that there would be a chance that the movie would pick up its pace and become more interesting that it had managed for the previous 40 minutes. That didn't happen, and I gave up out of sheer and utter boredom after 1 hour and 1 minute of enduring this ordeal.

While "House on Elm Lake" is listed as a horror movie, there is actually very little scary about the movie and the storyline. Unless you count being predictable and generic scary, then this was a frightfest.

The acting in the movie was adequate, taking into consideration what little material the actors and actresses had to work with. And the cast was a very small handful of people, which meant that they had additional pressure on their shoulders to perform well in order to carry the movie. The actors and actresses never were off to a flying start, as they were given a script that was essentially non-functional.

The special effects in the movie were primitive, albeit they did work well enough for their intended purposes. So at least that was counting in favor of the movie.

And I will also say that the production value was actually quite good, it seemed that they actually took the time to put effort into production and post production of the movie, because it did have a very good and professional presentation to it. It looked very well-made.

I have no intention of returning to finish the rest of "House on Elm Lake", because it just was way too boring and offered nothing of any interest to a seasoned horror veteran like myself.

I was lured in by the movie's cover. Spare yourself the anguish and stay well clear of this movie, because it just isn't worth the time, money or efforts. Some of us suffered through it, or most of it at least, so you don't have to.

What in the WHAT!?!
cadekelly21 April 2023
That... good lord...that was without a doubt the absolute worst "movie," on every single level, that I have ever had the misfortune of watching. My time would have been better spent bobbing for self respect out of a rusted out, industrial strength, powered on blender. The "acting" was horrible at best. The sfx were nothing more than Halloween store props. The director needs to go back to selling sand to the Middle East from Mother'sbasement. The costume designer, well, the costumes were probably provided from the local C- rated haunted attraction. Ok, the writer... good lord, you need serious mental help, Jesus, God, and Allah, and a healthy supply of 8000mg sedatives, for life. At some point, there was a meeting where everyone agreed that this was a good film. Someone, EVERYONE, should have said, hey, this sucks, lets not do this. Anyone involved in this flick needs to be on an FBI watch list. In short....if you have the option of watching this movie or driving your car off a bridge... well, grab your keys, sugarbritches.

Atmospheric and gripping demonic possession story
bundybair18 October 2017
Really loved this. Always a sucker for a good demonic thriller and this had all the requisite boxes ticked! Definitely some twists I didn't see coming - (no spoilers!). Not the biggest of budgets, but gruesome effects are quality. Don't expect: multi-million dollar effects. Do : expect: some terrifying moments and a fast moving plot. It's reminiscent of some horror classics - but in a good way. Highly recommend.

HouseonElmLake
gavcrimson18 October 2020
In which a naked old man frequently enters into the body of a younger man, causing problems within the younger man's marriage....a plot description which admittedly doesn't immediately sound like a satanic horror film. House on Elm Lake is actually a remake of an earlier British horror film called Lucifer's Night (2014), whose makers decided to do a second, more moneyed and professional, take on the same material. Its the type of low budget British horror film that tends to turn up on the DVD shelves of supermarkets, usually accompanied by an excitable sleeve quote comparing it to other, better known films, in this case "Nightmare on Elm Street meets Amityville Horror". If anything though The Shining seems to have been a greater influence on House on Elm Lake's story of a couple, Eric and Hayley Jones, who relocate to a universally unwanted remote house by a lake with their young daughter in tow. The reason the house remains universally unwanted is that the previous occupant, Elliot Mandre had murdered his entire family then killed himself during a satanic ritual. Soon after taking up residence, the house's bad mojo takes its toll on the already troubled Eric, who begins pissing blood and under Elliot's evil influence commiting adultery, rape, murder, cannibalism and domestic abuse. Elliot who is essentially an amalgamation of The Shining's Grady and the naked lady in room 237 also makes his own presence felt in the household. Cutting an obscene, sexually threatening figure. Whether he is perched naked on the end of a girl's bed or murdering a family friend by gouging out her eyes. Tony Manders, a former civil servant turned British horror film regular, gives a particularly fearless performance as Elliot Mandre, a role that requires him to be fully naked for the majority of his screen time.

To give an idea of what a small world the current British horror scene is...House on Elm Lake was filmed at the same house as Mother Krampus (2017) which shares at least four cast members with this film, and was recently remade as 'The Candy Witch' by this film's leading lady, Becca Hirani, who also directs and produces films under the name 'Rebecca J Matthews'. At 100 minutes, House on Elm Lake is leisurely paced, but has its rewards for those prepared to stick around. Just don't go in expecting an Evil Dead type ride in the fast lane without any brakes, this is more like a Sunday afternoon drive with your grandparents, albeit one where they end up going insane, taking off all their clothes and gouging out eyeballs.

Man this is awful
dctr66627 September 2018
Boring, bad acted, slow, forced to the core... There's nothing appealing or even reasonably satisfying with this movie. This was truly awful. And I've seen a lot of bad movies... Even the little gore in it is bad...

Possession on the lake
TheLittleSongbird14 August 2018
'House on Elm Lake' drew me into seeing it, with a cool poster/cover, an intriguing if unoriginal premise and as someone with a general appreciation for horror. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive.

It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws are here present in those films, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'House on Elm Lake' is terrible, with a plethora of problems (huge ones too) and doesn't do enough with its potential, which was hardly small. There is next to nothing to recommend in 'House on Elm Lake'.

Lets start with the positive, and sadly it is the only mild redeeming quality. The setting has moments where it is atmospheric and spooky, despite the rather direct to video schlocky way it's generally shot and edited. It was very clear that the film was made in a rush with no care or enthusiasm, making it difficult to appreciate the setting.

Going on further to the negatives, the story does feel over-stretched and some of it feels vague, under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less unsettled and never gaining momentum. It was a familiar premise and nothing new is done with it, there is a constant feel of been there done that. Too many characters are too sketchy and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates.

Making the film feel bland and forgettable with not enough heart put into it. The effects are ropy at best, the sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions) and all of the acting is lacking severely, seeming to think that screaming your head off a good deal or spending the whole time looking bored counts as good acting.

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling while the pace and film drags on forever, never recovering until finally getting slightly intriguing to the ending when something sort of finally happens. Even the ending however is botched, due to being so incomplete-feeling, illogical and hard to swallow. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the supposedly creepy atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations and the lack of tension and suspense.

A lot of 'House on Elm Lake' has underdeveloped plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or unsetling

There is not enough threat here and what there is of it tends to be used poorly, while the horror elements are unimaginative and are more odd than scary, completely failing to show any sense of horror. Some badly sagging momentum too. The direction is leaden, got the sense their heart was not in it, and the music doesn't really fit and is far too melodramatic and loud.

Concluding, awful. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Ok so it's not going to win best picture, but on the budget they had, it was good. Andrew Hollingworth did a particularly good job. Just go with it and stop expecting every movie to be shakespeare

Lake Front Property for sale
michaelRokeefe5 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Eric (Andrew Hollingworth) and Hayley (Becca Hirani) with young daughter Penny (Faye Goodwin) in tow move into a lake front property n hopes of a new start. Things start looking bad almost immediately. A snake skin bound book is found full of creepy drawings and disturbing photos. Sleep is disturbed by the vision of an old naked man walking about the house. And Penny has a "new friend" she has found... a burnt up, old, ugly, doll. And at one time this property was considered "too good to be true". Hayley and one of her friends (Lorena Andrea) do some investigating and discover the previous owner had gone mad killing his wife and family. It is believed this type activity may have started centuries ago. Bloody and gross, but not overly haunting.

This will make you jump....Keep the lights on!
shagee79774 May 2018
Director/ Writer James Klass House on Elm Lake is a supernatural scary horror flick from Wild Eye Releasing release, premiering 4/10 on VOD.

The movie starts off with a ritualistic killing of a mans wife and kid. Flash forward and couple and there young daughter move in the house. At first the house is everything they want and there Happy. But little by little strange happenings start occurring and it is evident that a evil presence is among them. Sound and atmosphere of this English language foreign flick will have you keeping the lights on long after the end credits roll. While there are so many haunted, possessed house movies, this one is done well and the director transports you in the horror this family is experiencing. Witchcraft and satanisim is brought upon this unsuspecting family and thrust down there throats. The movie is sexy, scary and frightening. Like I said this is a common theme for horror movies but this movie hits a homer in with its rendition and scares us. That's what I look for!

Directed by James Klass. Written by Shannon Holiday and starring Becca Hirani, Oliver Ebsworth , Andrew Hollingworth ,Faye Goodwin, Kate Lush Tony Manders

Far better than it should be with a few issues
kannibalcorpsegrinder19 February 2021
Heading out to the countryside, a man and his family move into the local lake-side cabin to start a new life together but the longer they stay there come to find the house haunted by demonic spirits, forcing him to become possessed and them down for a Satanic sacrifice.

This was a pretty enjoyable effort when it wanted to be. Among the more enjoyable elements here comes from the solid and chilling setup involving the escalating curse. That the discovery of the book and the weird events occurring behind him gets this going rather nicely, much like the imaginary friend being involved and the strange voices throughout the house gives this all a rather chilling feel when added to the backstory about the follower and his hold over the house. There's some great work with this setup to give the film a great base to work with as it builds upon these elements quite well. As well, there's a lot to enjoy about the corruption and temptation that occurs by staying at the house. The main scene here, from the discovery of the book and resulting seance while he's being pleasured by the spirits inside the house, creates a highly creepy atmosphere similar to the later scenes of the babysitter being stalked through the house. This all leads to the fantastic final half where everything gets turned around into a series of frenetic encounters with the possessed entities and some chilling stalking involving them trying to get away from the demons which is a great setup to the heart-wrenching and brutal conclusion. These give the film quite a lot to like although this one does have a few problems. The main issue associated here is the wholly underwhelming storyline that has several big problems associated with the setup. There's very little reason why this one rushes through everything the way it does since there's no build-up to what they mean, namely the discovery of the journal in the shed. Considering the implications and discoveries made inside, this one doesn't introduce it or its contents at all, instead merely dropping it with no clues or context and expect it to be understandable, much like the fate of the original family which is a huge plot point just dropped as if it meant nothing. Moreover, there's a problematic factor with the film resorting to the same cheap jump-scares over and over again. It's incredibly tiresome to have the same scenes of the camera cutting to the demonic entity standing in the room maniacally laughing or roaring in the face of their victim with the distorted filter on their voice. The last issue, which isn't truly detrimental, is the overlong finale that hits the appropriate heart-wrenching touches yet runs on a good few minutes longer than necessary which makes the film go on more than necessary. These are the main drawback factors for the film.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Nudity, children-in-jeopardy and drug use.

Evil has a new home ...
parry_na19 August 2022
This 2017 film is a remake of an earlier picture shot three years earlier, with this later version enjoying more of a budget. It's good, solid stuff. Directed and co-written by James Klass, the cinematography treats us to many slow-moving establishing shots and interesting, often unsettling angles. It isn't ground-breaking - the story has been done often before in various shapes or sizes.

I like the leads - they are very naturalistic and personable. Prolific actress Becca Hirani/Fletcher in particular, makes a good impression as cheery, dare I suggest sexy, Hayley, slowly affected by what's going on in her new dream house. Images of a naked old man, possibly over-used, are nevertheless creepy: kudos to Tony Mendez as Elliot. Faye Goodwin as daughter Penny bares a passing resemblance to a young Linda Blair, and Andrew Hollingworth impresses as husband Eric.

Penny's babysitter's not much cop. She follows a recounting of the house's grim past to Penny with a cheery, 'Anyway ... bed-time!' Initially, I had a problem with the comparative tender ages of mum and dad to have a grown-up child, but this is explained.

'Elm Lake' is not without problems - the voice modulation is repetitive and overdone and the pacing is often sluggish. The messy finale in particular would have been far more effective with a little pruning. A mixed bag perhaps, but the good far outweighs the bad. My score is 7 out of 10.
