It's OK, looks good, effective jump-scares, Macody carries it.
Finfrosk8624 November 2017
Synnøve Macody Lund plays the main character, and she does a great job. She has a natural way of acting that I like. I hate that acting- acting that a lot of older generation actors do. I'm gonna sound like a douche-bag saying this, but it doesn't hurt that Macody Lund is very pretty, you see her face a lot, and that's okay. Although what really matters of course, is that she does a good job with the acting. And she does!

Anywho! She inherits an old house, and she goes there to sell it. And uhm, scary stuff happens, OK?

Hjemsøkt looks very good, which is no big surprise, considering the director is a photographer. At least he has done some photography work before. He knows that he's doing when it comes to that stuff. The sound design is also well done. Slightly loud sounds at times, but still very good.

The first half or so of the movie contains a lot of fake scares. Knocking on a door, a door closing, that kind of thing. It just about gets a little annoying, before it more or less stops. It's pretty well paced, and didn't really become boring at all. Also helps that it's fairly short. About an hour, twenty minutes.

Hjemsøkt is not a bad movie. But it's not the big haunted house movie of the year, either. The story is alright, although I didn't find it extremely exciting.

With a little more genuine scares, and maybe some more effects and makeup, would help a lot with making this more great than just OK. I liked it, but don't expect a new Insidious or Conjuring.

Predictable and boring.
deloudelouvain7 December 2021
The positive reviews for this one are from people that barely review anything, so you get the picture... Hjemsøkt (or Haunted for the English title) is a slow paced movie that contains no horror at all besides a handful very predictable jump scares. And those jump scares were not even interesting for this genre. I was hoping for something much better but the whole plot failed to entertain me. I guess the acting could have been worse. For a low budget movie, because that's what this is, the acting was okay. The soundtrack, or more the absence of that, wasn't good, with a lot of silent passages that inevitably would lead to a sudden high sound so you would jump scare. I was just waiting for it, as it was that obvious that it was coming, so no effect at all was the result. The story itself is a bit confusing, not really interesting, borderline boring. I wouldn't waste your time on this Norwegian movie, there are much better movies coming from this country.

Atmosphere is good, but it was not used as it should haven been

Warning: Spoilers
Although the topic is too ordinary, its dimension is being managed by gothic, and in traumatic way. Until the end, we are just forced to think that there is something, called paranormal about the house,or her past. Especially the main suspect is redirected to the little girl, that we know as ''Daisy.'' But I can say that I predicted its final, and the movie's main argument that is being tried to pass through the viewers.

Both atmosphere and the current location are good. The insecure house idealogy is being set well. Furthermore; I just am distrubed by the main artist. I guess she is totally foreign to what she is acting about. I do not like her at all.

The bonds between the characters are not formed well. They are totally independence from their self- emotional balance, even from the each others. There is no totally ''couple sense'' in the movie. Even though she is reflected as pregnant, I am not totally feeling that she is really pregnant... There is too cold and weird playing.

The end does not make me satisfied about what is going around. Most of things are unclear so it gives a feeling like you're not able to solve the main sense for what writer focused on to express.

Actually movie based on the childhood trauma, which caused the abuser mother's dead. The main character selected not to save her mother probably because of her abusive behaviors. So, after years, her mind begins to show her what she does in the past. Every hallucination, that she sees, is example of her trauma.. Possibly her trauma begins to create paranormal character to remember everything to her. In the end, She realizes that she gave a birth but still she is moving on to see her fictional characters.. Probably until the end, she thinks that the girl sitting with her front of the window is her daughter.. but she glances at her husband, then she discerns that again she is talking with her imaginary character, not her daughter.

Because her child is with his husband near the next room.

Can someone PLEASE explain how this movie skipped a generation
BlackDog12310 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The lead and child actresses were both good, and the winter backdrop was both stark and hauntingly beautiful. This film came so close to being very good. And then ... What? The family gravestone skips her parents. Someone is found in the wall, presumably the aunt, but the ghost is possibly a memory of the lead killing her mother. Who may have been the one in the wall, since the necklaces were different on the ghost and the corpse. Did i miss something? What is going on?? Anyways, this was a good effort, but even on a second watch i was left wondering what became of this woman's mother's body, since the gravestone at the end indicated she (or the grandmother?) died in 1960. It's driving me crazy, to be honest.

Terrible

Slow paced, very bad acting, jump scares make zero sense, convoluted plot. Would give a zero out of ten if possible.

Weird movie
challis286 June 2022
No, this movie didnt work for me.

I guess the director thought of Grace Kelly, because the lead actress is just as cold as she ever could be.

Almost everyone in this movie has an unfriendly apperance, typical of people living in the nordic countries in the northen parts.

None of the actors were likeable. The dialoge was stiff as well as the actors.

The story was weird as well. The scenery was ok, I think that the director ought to continue with photography, rather than making movies.

Chilling and beautiful
matt-france5 November 2018
Loved the pace and simplicity of this film. The lead actor is a hauntingly beautiful woman that seems to slip effortlessly between enchanting prettiness to psychologically disturbed. If you like your horror films filled with blood and gore this is not for you. If you like thoughtful, slow build, psychological skin tingling then look no further than this icy treat.

Warning: Spoilers
Although you can predict the little girl is a ghost from the get-go, finding out what happened to her is still a mystery. Well acted, nice snowy set.

It runs in the family
itriatay99519 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Hjemsokt (The Haunted) was one of the movies that I wanted to watch such a long time. It took 7 years to find it and watch it. I have read all the other comments and I have an explanation to the story. The family of Catherine has a long going mental illness story back in 1950s because her grandmother was admitted to asylum and she was released in 1955. Catherine's grandmother killed Marie who was the aunt of Catherine. The same thing was almost about to happen to Catherine because her mother tried to kill her but she let her die when she got stuck. At the end, the child of Catherine was asking her whether the witch has left or not and Catherine's face showed us all that there is a potential risk that she may try to hurt her own children as well. In short, the long continuation of mental issues in a family is the reason behind the events. I give 7 out of 10 to this movie.
