Sydney Chandler has been cast as a lead in Noah Hawley’s “Alien” series currently in the works at FX, Variety has learned.
Plot and character details are being kept under tight wraps on the project, which was first announced in December 2020. The only detail that has been confirmed is that the show will take place on Earth in the not-too-distant future.
The role brings Chandler back to FX, as she previously made her network television debut in the cabler’s 2022 limited series “Pistol” from Danny Boyle, which told the story of the legendary band The Sex Pistols. Chandler starred in the series as Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. Chandler’s other credits include the film “Don’t Worry Darling” and the Facebook Watch series “Skam Austin.” She is also set to appear in the upcoming Apple series “Sugar” opposite Colin Farrell.

“We had a great year,” Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, VP of Nordic Content at Netflix, said when asked about the streamer’s 2022 Nordic efforts on stage at the Grand Theater in Göteborg.
Björk went on to list what she described as some of the streamer’s most successful Nordic content, including the Swedish series Snabba Cash. Facebook said its nascent Watch service is attracting more than 400 million monthly viewers who spend at least a minute checking out videos, 75 million of whom spend an average of 20 minutes watching shows every day. The self-reported data reflects strong momentum for the year-old service which, prior to its global launch in August, reported just 50 million monthly users in the U.S.

When Ted Sarandos said over the summer that Netflix’s young adult film “The Kissing Booth” was “one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe the world,” ears pricked up across the industry. The comment from the Netflix content chief underlined that the Ya audience, far from being lost to TV, is tuning in. But the rules of engagement are different.
“The critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave us 13, but the audience [rating] was at 82 at one point,” says Andrew Cole-Bulgin, chief creative officer of the “The Kissing Booth” producer Komixx Entertainment. “There’s disconnect because most of the critics are in their 40s and it’s not aimed at them.”
Komixx has mined digital self-publishing platform Wattpad for IP in this space. In the wake of “The Kissing Booth,” the shingle is now packaging Kelly Anne Blount’s thriller, “Captured,” and Ali Novak’s “My Life With the Waterboys,...

Facebook has announced the international rollout of Facebook Watch, its video destination for episodic content, which first launched in the U.S. a year ago this month. The social media giant said Wednesday that the VOD service would be “available everywhere” from Thursday, giving publishers and content creators a worldwide market for their videos.
“With the global launch of Watch, we are supporting publishers and creators globally in two critical areas: helping them to make money from their videos on Facebook and better understand how their content is performing,” the company said in a statement.
Watch launched in the U.S. in August 2017 with the goal of offering users a place on Facebook to discover shows and video creators and to start conversations with friends, other fans and even the creators themselves. The company said that, since the launch, it had made the experience more social, including making it easier...

Today’s television landscape doesn’t relegate storytelling to the actual screen, but offers opportunities to extend the lives of characters through transmedia. While the avenues are open creatively on a number of digital and social platforms, it also offers opportunities for companies to advertise in new places, often blurring the line between an organic extension of a story and a piece of marketing.
“We live in a world where marketing is becoming increasingly opt-in and where consumers are turning to ad blockers and turning the channel,” says Jim Marsh, vice president of digital and social media at HBO. “Transmedia gives us an opportunity to reach consumers in a way that is compelling and interesting.”
When it comes to approaching transmedia from a strictly storytelling standpoint, Norway’s hit teen drama “Skam,” created by Julie Andem, expanded its narrative and tapped into its young demographic by utilizing a real-time approach to unfolding the story,...

Skam Austin Season 2 will begin in March on Facebook Watch.
Skam Austin Season 2 is a go! Facebook Watch has renewed the American adaptation of the breakout Norwegian transmedia teen drama that is told in real-time, with videos released on the internet as they are happening in the world of the show.
The original series, created by Julie Andem, became an international sensation, particularly during Season 3, which features a queer protagonist struggling to come to terms with his sexual identity, among other things. Unlike the many other Skam adaptations currently airing around the world, Andem is the showrunner of Skam Austin.
Skam Austin Season 1 follows Meg, a teen girl living in Austin, Texas. Like the first season of Skam, Skam Austin follows its teen girl protagonist as she becomes friends with a motley group of girls, having previously relied only on her relationship with boyfriend Marlon for social support.

In their TCA debut, Facebook executives detailed the long road they have to be on to join the ranks of the Netflixes and even AMCs of the original TV game.
“Our breakouts may look different than what you would expect from other platforms,” said Fidji Simo, vice president of product. “We’re not going for big prestige TV drama.” The social media giant is joining an ever-growing field of content distributors, having launched Facebook Watch a year ago.
“It takes a show that breaks through and becomes part of the cultural zeitgeist,” added Ricky Van Veen, head of global creative strategy, on what’s going to get Facebook Watch the same respect of an AMC or HBO. He mentioned noted basketball-dad Lavar Ball, who produces “Ball in the Family” and their Tom Brady docuseries have already broken through a bit.
