SIMPLE BUT BRILLIANT

I watched this film on Netflix and let me tell you theres something about independent writers and directors that gets me every time. The cinematogrphy and original score for this film mash together so perfectly. Everything felt real and I felt a connection to these characters as if I grew up with them personally. Once you feel emotionally connected to the characters I feel as though the director and writer have both accomplished something special. At times the film can be slow but the pace and overall vibe I got from this film really inspired me to continue writing and directing my own work.

Hidden Gem

This film is a slice-of-life "coming of age" film about a boy called Davyeon who lives in a black community in rural Arkansas. Not many people seem know about this film which is sad because it is an truly a masterpiece of its genre. Not many films can capture a true authentic feeling of rural life in many black communities across the United States.

Although the film focuses on the character Davyeon for most part, it does not neglect to show the lives and struggles of other young black men surrounding him in the community. The messaging of the film in regards to gang life and the struggles facing many young black men in America and worldwide was handled and conveyed masterfully.

Every element of this film feels genuine and well executed, especially the acting and cinematography. There is also some really good symbolism being conveyed throughout the film that may go over some peoples head.

Overall it is a wonderful film that is a must see if you enjoy rural slice-of-life type movies.

Touching

This movie takes it time and enraptures the audience into its mood and setting first.

The actors, cinematography, music scores, blend Dayveon's rite of passage into a masterpiece.

It reminds of Moonlight, where the director tries to bring art house into the ghetto. I rewatch this movie every so often, because there's not many movies that can capture personal trauma with such realism and artistic scope.

As an aspiring screenwriter and director, I hope to some day recreate something like this.
