Good daytime feelgood movie

Enjoyable movie. Well acted. Good true story about education. Quite predictable, with a few turns that make it interesting. Well worth a watch.

not a filmographic or scriptous hairraiser, but nice

I dove into this one due to a well made poster, and interesting plot summary, and it ended up quite satisfying. thats due to good acting, and a phonomenal choice of music that makes this rather dull political fight into a well ducted and freestreaming experience to watch.

school systems are different wherever you go, the us system are and the dc system are far away from the norwegian schoolsystem, and when i see difficult it is to change a simple thing, i do understand why they fight and also why the majority give up already in the start pit. i will say norwegian schools are better organized , they are free and you have the opportunity to choose from a young age.

if youre in for a filmatic feinschmaecker, just pass this one , because this is a film that screams ''we shall win'' from start to end. the grumpy old man thinks there are just a bit to much '' as prescribed''-in the script, in this movie, but its entertainment for a lacy autumn afternoon in the couch for me and my wife. a 6 out of ten it is.

Incredibly Inspiring and Exciting
fraydalevy24 October 2019
This film is so uplifting Uzo plays a mother who against all odds works to get her son into a school where he can thrive. the multiple dramas a work provide a suspense and humor. Still, your heart will fall as Uzo is smashed down by those who simply don't care and those who don't want her to succeed. Yet the community rallies around her and she rallies them to win out. So heartwarming to see this true story. And to know that 11,00 kids have had their lives turned around as a result of Virginia's heroism.

Black schools

Well dramatized and little known facts about dysfunctional black inner city schools. Uzu Aduba does a good job.

Uzo is amazing. Also - this review explains the otherwise low rating this film has.

Warning: Spoilers
Uzo nails it as Miss Virginia. Worth a watch just for her.

The fact that the movie is good makes it even better. The fact that it's based off a true story is even more icing.

Of course, the results are still pending as to how much good it's done (since it got canned after 5 years)... See the non-written reviews (as of this writing just above 6 stars) compared to the written reviews.

That's a lot of unnecessary dissonance that reflects some of the divisiveness of politics in America.

But specifically D.C.

Former DC Mayor Walter Washington doesn't look great in this movie (though the actor is a dead ringer for him) and Mayor "for Life" Marion B didn't look good either.

The film knew it... They're elected officials? Why did they have to make up names?

The 'bad guy' DC Representative is supposed to be Eleanor Holmes Norton but looks nothing like her, nor acts incompetent enough to be her.

The 'good guy' Representative is from 'the other' party.

The film doesn't mention ANY of that. Names nor party. But you can't make the Mayor for Life look bad...

Extra info: The bill was signed into law under George W. Bush and was phased out under Barrack Obama - for more info check out the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program.

I loved it! One of the best movies since 2010's "Winter's Bone"!
nealr-6781122 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"I got my ass handed to me on that show!" weeps aspiring school reformer Virginia (Uzo Aduba) after a media minion of the political/educational establishment publicly ridicules her and her motives. In response, Virginia's new no-nonsense tough-love friend Shondae (Amirah Vann) glances at Virginia's posterior and declares "Well, there's still plenty left."

Moments of unexpected humor such as this (another is when Congressman Cliff Williams (Matthew Modine) states that his "pants are tactical, they blind the opponent") -- along with the phenomenal acting and obvious overall devotion and artistry of the entire production -- makes one realize that this is not only a great (and inspirational) true story, but a great movie as well.

In fact, despite the almost complete opposition of skin color between Appalachia and Washington D.C., I think this is one of the best movies since 2010's "Winter's Bone" -- a movie which also dealt with how the policies of the government can actually make things worse, not better, when the politicians (and those whose well-paying jobs depend on them) are left to their own devices, concerned only about what is best for themselves and not the people they are supposed to represent.

"Winter's Bone" showed how treating drug addiction and production as a crime deserving of a draconian prison sentence similar to that for murder, instead of as a medical/psychological and financial problem, actually can result in murder.

And "Miss Virginia" illustrates how the solution to the poor quality and unsafe conditions of public schools is NOT (as the establishment repeatedly claims) to simply give them more money (Virginia discovers early on that the public schools are already getting twice as much per pupil as private schools), but by having the government give each pupil's money to whatever school the pupil chooses to attend. For (as should be obvious in a free country but, thanks to the establishment, isn't) having schools compete for students both increases the quality and lowers the costs.

And even though the "DC Education Incentive Act" that Virginia and Congressman Williams attempt to get passed -- over the severe obstacles that the establishment (as well as drug kingpins who want an endless supply of uneducated pushers to replace those who are killed or imprisoned) keeps putting in their way -- will only supply scholarships to 1700 kids a year (enabling each of them to attend the private school of their choice), they know it would be a tremendous, life-saving start.

For as the song that closes the movie says, "the future started yesterday, and we're already late." One can only hope that even though "Miss Virginia", like "Winter's Bone", is only getting a limited theatrical release, the Academy will shine upon Uzo Aduba and other cast members the same way they did in 2010 on a then-unknown by the name of Jennifer Lawrence.

Great Movie with Important History
angelaweeks-5930128 February 2020
This was a great movie and really highlighted how important local government is and advocacy. It also spoke of the hardships a lot of folks have to navigate in neighborhoods that are under resourced and undeserved. The acting was also great. Highly recommend it.

When I read the article, the description about "Miss Virginia" blew me away. I can't believe, of what this incredible woman did for all those children for The Bored of Education in Washington, D. C. It was just, just outstanding, amazing, unbelievable!

BEAUTIFULLY DONE - Based on Virginia Walden, the real person
channahsorah14 February 2022
Wow. "Kids Come First!" ... Ashay and Amen.

Until today I did not know about Virginia Walden and the work for kids' EDUCATION that she has led, coordinated, and facilitated. ... Am *thankful* to have somehow come across this movie, "Miss Virginia." ... This extraordinary person began a huge uphill battle overcoming massive barriers for K - 12 education for resource-poor families in DC. She is still working for quality education for school kids in concrete and measurable ways, such as scholarships to proper, high-quality schools.

The movie has Class-A top-notch Actors, so spectacular that you cannot "see" the acting, i.e., it's not "fake" or "pretend." It is Heartfelt and Real. Watching it we can tell it was truly a Labor of Love. ... This includes the high caliber of the little kids, teens, and all the adults. ... Please see this film. -- You will Love it.
