After breaking records and raising over $1 million on Kickstarter, YouTube critic Chris Stuckmann is making his feature directorial debut with horror movie Shelby Oaks, which we haven’t heard any updates on for a bit now. Today brings a pretty exciting one, however.
Deadline reports that horror master Mike Flanagan has come on board the upcoming Shelby Oaks as an executive producer. Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures have joined the team.
Shelby Oaks is currently in post-production, so we expect to hear more soon.
“Intrepid’s films and TV shows have inspired me for years, and it’s a dream come true to work with Mike and Trevor on my first feature,” said Stuckmann. “I’m ecstatic beyond words to partner on the release of Shelby Oaks.”

A new image from Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus has been released (via USA Today), and it gives us another look at one of the movie's Xenomorphs as it bares its terrifying metallic teeth
A few subtle changes aside, the titular creature has pretty much remained the same since it first debuted in Ridley Scott's original classic, and it doesn't look like Romulus is going to alter the design to any great extent.
Check out the new image below, along with a recent video clip of one of the movie's practical Facehuggers.

The teaser trailer and poster for a truly terrifying cinematic experience from producer Ridley Scott and director/writer Fede Alvarez, 20th Century Studios’ Alien: Romulus, is here!
The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.
Alien: Romulus opens exclusively in theaters nationwide August 16, 2024.
The production and set design are incredible – it’s a terrific combination of the Nostromo from the original 1979 film as well as the elevator from the 1986 sequel Alien.
In today’s interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez said of Ridley Scott and James Cameron:
James Cameron is also someone I’ve met through the years, and when he learned that I was doing it, we started chatting about it. So I also...

It's been nearly seven years since Ridley Scott returned to the "Alien" franchise with the ever-divisive "Alien: Covenant." While we may not be getting a sequel to that film, Disney and 20th Century Studios are bringing the Xenomorphs back for another big-screen thrill ride in the form of this summer's "Alien: Romulus." Directed by Fede Alvarez, it looks like a return to the franchise's horror roots with new characters, a new ship, and familiar threats.
Alvarez recently spoke with Variety in honor of the recently released "Alien: Romulus" teaser trailer. The filmmaker was asked what he is bringing to the table for his film, which takes place 20 years after the events of the original 1979 sci-fi/horror classic. Alvarez, much like Ridley Scott and James Cameron before him, has a unique view of this universe. But his main goal? Make "Alien" scary again:

The CBS drama Fire Country is turning up the heat with plans for a spinoff starring Morena Baccarin. Reports say Baccarin plays a sheriff in a Season 2 episode with the option to become a series regular in the simmering spinoff series. Deadline was the first to report the news, saying CBS Studios would produce the potential spinoff.
Baccarin’s sheriff character is named Mickey. She’s been a sheriff’s deputy for fifteen years and spent much of her tenure studying the landscape and populace of Edgewater. With a tremendous amount of hometown pride flowing like fire through her veins, Mickey does whatever it takes to keep the citizens of Edgewater free from harm.
Deadline says negotiations for the series began before the holiday rush, with Baccarin as the top runner to lead the proposed spinoff. The upcoming episode introducing Mickey acts as a backdoor pilot for the character, with...

Released last fall, Lucky McKee’s “chamber thriller” Old Man had nothing to do with the Don’t Breathe films, despite starring Stephen Lang – who played the “Blind Man” in both Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2. But that didn’t stop the movie’s Russian distributor from marketing it as a prequel to those films! During an interview with Jb Hi-Fi, McKee laughed about the fact that his movie is part of the Don’t Breathe franchise, as far as Russia is concerned.
McKee said, “In Russia, they released it as Don’t Breathe: The Beginning. Kind of like the Italians used to do back in the day, with movies like Zombi 2.“
Sure enough, if you search the title Don’t Breathe: The Beginning, you’ll find confirmation that Old Man is a Don’t Breathe prequel in Russia.

CBS is pouring a kerosine tank on Fire Country this Friday with news of the show’s renewal for a second season. The order is for an entire season, making Fire Country Season 2 one of the network’s hottest properties. The show averages over 10 million viewers per episode in live airings across multiple platforms. In addition to tonight’s episode, CBS will air a special episode on January 29 after the AFC Championship game.
“It’s pretty remarkable to see a new series resonate like this with both broadcast and streaming audiences right out of the gate,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “Fire Country has so many appealing entry points for the audience. Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe was a nice and tight little thriller that had audiences buzzing about the film upon its release in 2016. The film made over 150 million worldwide on a budget of 9 million. Of course, a film that should’ve been a one-and-done feature was greenlit for a second movie, though, given the obvious sequel hook in the first film, it isn’t much of a surprise that Don’t Breathe 2 exists. The real shocker is that the focus never goes back to Rocky and her daughter, it actually puts the Blind Man (aka Norman Nordstrom) in the protagonist’s

A new “Alien” film is in the works at 20th Century Studios, with “Don’t Breathe” director Fede Alvarez set to helm the project, Variety has confirmed. Ridley Scott, the director of the original 1979 movie, is producing.
In addition to directorial duties, Alvarez is penning the script for the standalone film. Scott is producing via his Scott Free banner, and the movie is intended to stream on Hulu.
The original “Alien” follows the crew of a spacecraft who soon come into contact with a bloodthirsty extraterrestrial. The science fiction horror film starred Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. Its major box office success spurred sequels and spinoffs, including “Aliens” (1986), “Alien 3” (1992) and “Alien Resurrection” (1997), as well as the “Alien vs. Predator” crossover films and “Prometheus” prequels. But their dream soon turns into a waking nightmare when they accidentally disrupt the home of Leatherface, the deranged serial killer whose blood-soaked legacy continues to haunt the area’s residents — including Sally Hardesty (Olwen Fouéré), the sole survivor of his infamous 1973 massacre who’s hell-bent on seeking revenge.
David Blue Garcia directs while Fede Alvarez (“Evil Dead” remake) and Rodo Sayagues (“Don’t Breathe 2”) produce.
Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jessica Allain and Nell Hudson co-star while John Larroquette is returning as the narrator as he did on the 1974 and 2003 films.

Welcome back, Leatherface. The iconic horror movie killer is back in the official trailer for Netflix’s reboot of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” arriving on the streaming platform on Feb. 18.
This new “Texas Chainsaw” is directed by David Blue Garcia and produced by “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe” filmmaker Fede Álvarez, which is keeping anticipation high among horror lovers. Álvarez produced with Rodo Sayagues, who wrote “Don’t Breathe” and the “Evil Dead” movies and made his directorial debut with last year’s “Don’t Breathe 2.”
Netflix’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” stars “Eighth Grade” breakout Elsie Fisher opposite Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jessica Allain and Nell Hudson. As Variety exclusively reported last week, John Larroquette is returning to the franchise as the new film’s narrator. Larroquette served this same role on the 1974 original and the 2003 remake. The new “Texas Chainsaw” is a direct sequel to the 1974 original.

Another year, another bountiful crop of action filmmaking. The following article covers some of the best. Like with last year’s installment, the focus will be on action scenes—compact, heightened expressions of action filmmaking craft—rather than films as a whole, which means that some otherwise strong, action-adjacent pictures may be missing and a couple included films look fairly lackluster beyond their set pieces. For the sake of variety, I have limited myself to one scene per film, and all featured films made their official, non-festival, U.S. theatrical and/or streaming debut in 2021. The criterion of “official” excludes the Chinese direct-to-YouTube actioner One More Shot, which was removed after just a few days online. Whenever the film receives a more “legitimate” stateside debut, it will almost certainly be included in that year’s roundup. And now, to the action. The scenes have been organized into loose thematic...

Not all horror is about tearing your nerves to shreds, and of those that are, not all are as successful as their loud noises and jumpy antics might have you believe.
But among them, especially more recently, is a very special sub-genre of horror that’s truly not meant for the faint of heart. Works of masterful direction that not only leave you gnawing your fingernails to the bone, but questioning all you hold dear too, forever balancing on that knife edge of utter dread.
To celebrate the release of Don’t Breathe 2, available to Download & Keep, Rent on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD now, we take a look at five of the most nerve-racking horror films.

For the first time in quite a while, last weekend saw major new releases enter the Australian theatrical market, in the form of Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel and Aussie James Wan’s horror Malignant.
Yet neither could catch Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
While last weekend was technically the Disney title’s eighth in release, for Sydneysiders just emerging from lockdown, it is only the second weekend the film has been available.
Pent-up demand saw it collect $1.2 million, just a 20 per cent dip, moving to just shy of $13 million.
According to Numero, the top 20 titles mustered $3.3 million, up 7 per cent on the previous.
This coming weekend should see the market return to some semblance of normal for the first time since June, with cinemas in Melbourne and Canberra able to reopen from Friday.

Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. The biggest recommendation that I can personally make in regard to perfect Halloween movie experiences is the Wnuf Halloween Special, which is getting a killer Blu-ray release tomorrow. Arrow Films is giving Dario Argento’s Deep Red a 4K upgrade this week, too, and Severin Films is showing love to both An Angel for Satan and Beyond Darkness.
Other releases for October 26th include Don’t Breathe 2, The Amazing Mr. X, Boardinghouse, Eye of the Devil, Skull: The Mask, Frankenstein’s Daughter, and Underworld: Limited Edition 5-Movie Collection.

Spooky season has officially arrived! If you’re looking for a family-friendly movie to get you in the spirit of Halloween without actually scaring the kids, then you might enjoy “The Addams Family 2.”
The animated sequel to the 2019 film was released in theaters and video on demand on Friday, which means audiences can decide between leaving the house or watching comfortably from home. If the latter option seems more appealing, you can rent “The Addams Family 2” on Amazon Prime Video for $19.99. But you don’t have to watch it immediately. After placing the order, you’ll have 30 days to start streaming “The Addams Family 2,” and 48 hours to finish it once you start.

SiriusXM continues to expand its line of Marvel podcasts with "Marvel's Wastelanders: Hawkeye," a new 10-episode scripted series that will feature Stephen Lang as the voice of the Avenger and archer extraordinaire. Jeremy Renner has his own live-action "Hawkeye" series coming to Disney+ on November 24, 2021, but before that, you'll be able to hear the audio adventures of Old Man Hawkeye on SiriusXM. This version of the character is a surly sideshow freak who is losing his sight, not unlike Lang's character, the Blind Man, most recently seen in "Don't Breathe 2."

While family audiences finally have a little more variety at cinemas by way of Paw Patrol: The Movie and Ainbo: Amazon Princess, neither new release were a match for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Free Guy at the box office last weekend.
Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Movie opened at no. 3, ringing up $235,097 from 173 screens. Paid previews on the title have been running since August 21, so in total the animated feature is on $956,192.
The result has helped the film cross $US100 million ($137.8 million) worldwide, following openings in territories such as the UK August 9 and North America August 22, where it was simultaneously released on Paramount+.
Considering Rialto’s Ainbo: Amazon Princess is not based on established IP like Paw Patrol, its opening weekend of $105,464 from 143 locations is a decent result, seeing it premiere in sixth position.

“Candyman” dominated every platform in its first weekend on premium VOD. Available for $19.99, the Universal horror movie aligned with standard studio strategy to debut on home platforms after its third week of theatrical play. It still ranked #4 in theaters, falling only 26 percent.
Nia DaCosta’s update of the 1993 horror classic displaced the studio’s own “F9” ($19.99), after an expanded edition returned the widely seen sequel to #1 across all charts last week. The worldwide top grossing film of 2021 is now #2 at both Vudu and Google Play, and #3 at iTunes.
The strength of “Candyman” took #1 on Vudu’s full week chart, even though its release covered only three days of Vudu’s listing period. Of the 17 different films on the three VOD charts, 10 are PVOD titles ($19.99 or higher) and fill 23 of the 30 total slots.

Last week, three studios made major announcements that suggest Premium VOD income isn’t enough to prioritize it over other platforms; this week, the VOD charts suggests a drop in the momentum toward home viewing options. This may be temporary, with “Candyman” (Universal/$19.99) scheduled for release September 16, but Disney will present the rest of its 2021 movie slate as initial theatrical exclusives. Universal placed “Halloween Kills” day-and-date on Peacock October 15, and Paramount announced that it would replace chairman and and CEO Jim Gianopulos with the more Paramount+-friendly Brian Robbins, currently head of Nickelodeon.
Warner Bros. provides same-day HBO Max access for its theatrical releases, but James Wan’s “Malignant,” a $40 million-budgeted horror film, mustered only 735,000 viewings (per Samba TV’s estimate). Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” this weekend and next month’s “Dune” should do much better. Disney’s “Free Guy,” just announced for September 28 PVOD, should also find high interest.

Before the industry could calculate summer 2021’s final box office figures, they had to wait for Disney, which had the final say.
Because when you have a Marvel movie like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings programmed during the final weekend of the season, and it delivers a Labor Day holiday opening of $94.67 million, it swings everything.
Before the opening of Shang-Chi, Universal (including Focus) was leading the summer box office period of May 7-September 2 with $393.9 million, according to Comscore, ahead of Disney’s $382.3M. But following the Marvel Cinematic Universe title’s release, Disney jumped to No. 1 with $483M. If you include 20th Century Studios and Searchlight’s grosses, the Disney-20th Century combo is $586.1M, per Comscore. Universal and Focus ranked second for the summer with $407.4M.
That means a win for the hybrid theatrical day-and-date model, right?
No, dummy, box office is product-driven. That was...

In more open theatrical markets like the US and the UK, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – the first Marvel film to feature an Asian lead and a predominantly Asian cast – is breaking pandemic-era records.
In Australia, the Sydney-shot title bowed on $1.9 million ($2.1 million with previews); a result that would be fairly unimaginable for a MCU film in normal times but one that is the reality with such a significant portion of the market shut.
Nonetheless, it marks best opening weekend for a film since Space Jam: A New Legacy, outpacing Jungle Cruise, The Suicide Squad and Free Guy.
Given how disrupted the landscape is, a perhaps more accurate way to ascertain how Shang-Chi is being received locally is in its screen average; it averaged a very healthy $7,435 across the 262 screens it played. It also had 55 per cent market share.
Indeed, the mood of exhibitors who could play the film appears buoyant,...

On a Labor Day weekend when “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” exploded to a record $90 million initial four- day gross, Disney also expanded Premium VOD platforms for its $100 million-plus box office “Jungle Cruise” ($29.99). As with other PVOD titles, it’s making a strong debut on multiple charts after an initial Disney+ home exclusive.
“Jungle Cruise” leads at Vudu, which favors higher-priced titles with its revenue tally. Among transactional charts, iTunes has it as #3, with GooglePlay placing it at #5. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$5.99) repeats at #1 at both iTunes and Google, and at #5 is the highest non-pvod films at Vudu. All of this reinforces that Disney can maximize returns from multiple outlets even as films still do well in theaters.
“Don’t Breathe 2” (Sony/$19.99), a surprise PVOD release after three weeks in theaters, is #2 at Vudu, #3 at iTunes, and #5 at GooglePlay. The film fell a modest 18 percent in...

Marvel returned to the top of the box-office weekend for the holiday as the latest offering from the studio, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings debuted at number one over the weekend, bringing in $71.4 million.
In a very distant second place was last week’s top finisher, Candyman, which added $10.6 million over the weekend to lift it’s two-week total to $39.1 million. Similarly dropping one spot was Free Guy, which took in $8.7 million and landed in third place in its fourth week of release. Meanwhile, Paw Patrol: The Movie also fell a spot in its third week in theaters, earning $4.0 million, for a total of $30.3 million. Over six weeks, the Disney’s Jungle Cruise has made a total of $105.6 million, $3.95 million of which it added this weekend to finish in fifth place just behind Paw Patrol.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” Marvel’s first movie with an Asian superhero, topped the South Korean box office over its first weekend. But it failed to lift Korean cinema-going to new heights.
The film grossed $4.75 million over the opening weekend, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service provided by the Korean Film Council. Released on Wednesday, it has a five-day cumulative of $6.61 million.
Its Friday to Sunday haul was achieved on 1,783 screens and represented 59% of the national box office haul. The overall weekend total was $8.05 million, a decent bounce from the previous weekend, but also short of the best weekend of the year.
Korean film “Sinkhole” has the biggest opening weekend of the year by a local film with $5.63 million. “Black Widow” earned $8.72 million over its opening weekend in July and $12.1 million in its first five days.
“Hostage: Missing Celebrity” slipped from first place to second.

Update: Disney now says the Friday-Sunday gross for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was $75.5 million, and estimates that with Labor Day added the total will be at least $90 million for the four days. The increase comes from earning $4.1 million more than predicted on Sunday, nearly as much as Saturday.
In addition to “Shang-Chi” becoming a genuine hit, this success places “Shang-Chi” closer to the initial $80 million three-day opening for “Black Widow” and brands Labor Day as having all the benefits of a normal holiday weekend. And, unlike every other film released this year, this Marvel film appears to have momentum that draws in more people as word of its success gets out.
Box-office history was busy this weekend. With Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” we learned that Simu Liu is an action star; that Labor Day is a perfectly fine time to open a blockbuster; and,...

In the US, Universal’s Candyman slashed its way to the top of the box office last weekend, with a $US22 million ($30 million) result surpassing expectations and hailed as an encouraging sign for moviegoing.
Here in Australia, where the country’s two largest theatrical markets in Sydney and Melbourne remain closed, results were quite different.
The MA15+ film, produced and written by Jordan Peele and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, opened on just $148,050 from 103 screens.
That was just behind fellow horror Don’t Breathe 2, which opened on $160,597 from 103 screens for Sony. By contrast, the 2016 original topped the box office, opening on $1.3 million – ultimately finishing just shy of $5 million.
According to Numero, the top 20 titles mustered $2.5 million, down 17 per cent on the previous. That is the lowest result this year, with no title cracking $1 million.
Instead of horror, Australian audiences that could still go to the movies mostly opted for sci-fi action...

Audiences had no problem saying his name over the weekend. Universal’s horror sequel “Candyman” debuted at number one at the box office, exceeding its initial projections by almost 50 percent and making history for director Nia DaCosta in the process.
“Candyman” grossed an estimated $22.3 million in North America, blasting past its projected target of $15 million. As a result of its success, DaCosta is now the first Black woman to direct a number one debut.
Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris, DaCosta’s “Candyman” picks up 30 years after the events of the original 1992 franchise-starter and features original star Tony Todd in a cameo role. Jordan Peele served as executive producer and co-writer on the new film, which Universal had originally set to debut last year before the coronavirus pandemic forced its lengthy delay. Unlike some other offerings at the summer box office, “Candyman” is a theatrical-only feature — its streaming and...
