Could have been better without the melodramatic villain
mgconlan-115 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Last night Lifetime offered a "world premiere" of something called "Open Marriage," a TV- movie from our old friends at MarVista Entertainment, directed by Sam Irvin from a script by Jason Byers and apparently shot under the working title "To Have and to Kill." I'd been determined to watch this movie ever since I saw the promos, mainly because — unusually for a Lifetime movie — it features two devastatingly hot guys, Tilky Jones and Jason Tobias. The plot: Becca (Nikki Leigh) is a doctor with a killer work schedule who wants a child and is getting worried because her husband Ron (Tilky Jones) doesn't seem capable of giving her one — not that they've had sex in quite a while. Ron is a struggling builder trying to put a contracting business together but he needs a big job to do that — which he hopes he has when the city they're in decides to build a community center and he thinks he has a good chance at landing that contract. Becca has a friend from her college days, Mindy (Kelly Dowdle), who's married to a 1-percenter (though we're never told just where his money comes from or what he's doing career-wise now) named Max (Jason Tobias), who's pretty much the same physical type as Ron — only Max has frizzier hair and Ron has an elaborate tattoo covering most of his left arm, which is the main way you can tell them apart. The film shows us a lot of Ron and Max in bathing suits and nothing else (way to go!) for the straight women and Gay men in the audience, while any straight men watching this get enough glimpses of Becca and Mindy similarly attired in swimwear to get their sort of charge. During one evening when the two couples are having an outdoor get-together Max and Mindy announce that they've "opened" their marriage to sexual experiences with other couples. Ron and Becca are reluctant at first, but the mere thought of a four-way with their good buddies turns them on enough they get it on for the first time in months. Ron, Becca, Max and Mindy have their first "open" encounter at Max's home and set ground rules — they won't do anything unless all four are involved and they'll use "protection" against both pregnancy and STD's. Their second open encounter occurs at a private sex club called Caligula (which made me wonder if they specifically catered to people who want to have sex with their siblings, the way the real Caligula did), which you get invitations to through text messages on your smartphone that tell you what the password is for that night. (No, it's not "Swordfish.")

Had screenwriter Byers stopped there he might have had a very interesting movie about people who think they can handle the sexual underground, find they really can't, and suffer picturesquely along the way before reverting to monogamy at the end. One particularly interesting twist is that Ron isn't entirely infertile but he's told by one of the doctors at Becca's hospital that he has only one-one hundredth of the chance of impregnating his wife as a normal man. That leads to the tantalizing possibility that the entire "open marriage" business was stage-managed by Becca as a way of having a child; since her husband couldn't give her one, she decided to go after Max and see if he could do the job (which could have led to an intriguing sequel 20 years later, as the kid, now grown, learns that his biological father is fabulously wealthy and goes after his money). Instead "Open Marriage" takes a turn into typical Lifetime melodramatics that significantly weaken it. "Open Marriage" could have been a titillating joyride and a moral tale instead of writing the "villain" character in and turning the resolution flat and ordinary.

Eye candy galore!
alishaebrahimnegad27 December 2018
This is a ridiculous film only made watchable by the sexy hardbodies just frolicking around - I mean, I haven't had this much fun watching a movie since Magic Mike came out!! It's made even better because of the frequent sweaty workout scenes amongst the two leading men, have mercy! And Ron never wears a shirt when he's at home so we get to watch all that deliciousness walk around shirtless on the phone...shirtless watching television...shirtless arguing with his wife...shirtless shirtless shirtless:):):):) That's what I'm talking about.

Okay, to comment on the film directly, the storyline was good but there was something off about the acting, which seemed kind of stale (I'm sorry) The couples didn't treat each other like they loved each other either. They were supposed to be married couples but they were acting like teenagers dating in high school.

And the ending was just tooooo much. The villain overacted and the CGI blood shocked me because it was so obvious! Couldn't they just use fake blood like every other movie?

Saw it a couple of times.....still comes across as a "G" rated gay porno.
mja5816 June 2021
I saw this a couple of times and every time I see it comes across as an attempt at gay porno, with women mixed in for interest.

The two male leads appearing shirtless or in stick-to-skin underwear throughout most of the movie was a bit gratuitous. Their bodies should have been given screen credit for this.

The nurse character's gay friend at the hospital was such a RAGING QUEEN that every gay man who sees this should feel INSULTED.

This is the only movie I have seen where women and men are clothed when engaging in sex. I Think in some scenes the women PUT on clothes?

Club Caligula just creeped me out.

The ending was a bit over the top - poor Tilky Jones.

If you are a gay man and watch this, you'll enjoy the scenery - but remember who they are stereotyping.....

5/10.

Don't understand giving it more than one star
treesh-3056328 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Don't understand how anyone can give this movie more than one star.

First, it was pretty obvious from early on that Mindy was the villain in the movie and she was the stalker. The way she kissed Becca on the cheek at a lunch and the fact that she was buying her matching dresses was a dead give away. Also, it was pretty easy to tell that Mindy was the one in the club with the mask on and the straight hair.

Next, I originally thought Max was really cool, but as the movie went on, it turned out that he was actually quite wimpy.

The acting in this movie was atrocious! The ending was no surprise, but what I was surprised by is the way both men took a passive role in taking Mindy down. Max actually made Becca do the deed, while he and Ron did nothing. Even when it looked like Mindy might shoot Becca, there was no reaction or help from the men. Max had not heartbreak or shock that his wife was the one? At the end, Becca and Ron were all sweet and happy when they found out who was the father of her baby. They made out on the couch like all's well that ends well? After what they had just been through and all the cheating, they are back to normal that very night? This movie could have been done a lot better. It was disappointing.

Typical LMN letdown
machhh13 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Am I the only one that seems to have realized that Max and Becca were having an affair all along? Although the movie itself never shows them together alone, it becomes obvious in the movie that all of her double shift at the hospital may not have really been double shifts. This all becomes evident at the last dinner between the couples. It was obvious at their last lunch date when all four were getting the text messages. when the message comes through about Ron, she is so upset, and then the message comes through about her (Becca)and Max, Becca stands up and admits they did in fact go back, but that wasn't the worst part and before Becca can admit everything, Max abruptly ends everything and tells them to get off of his property. It's made even more clear at the end of the movie when Becca gets a paternity test. Why would a woman need a paternity test unless she had been having unprotected sex and unfaithful? She knew what she was doing, she just wanted a baby and I can understand that, but using her husbands best friend?????? The whole open marriage thing was just a set up so they (Becca and Max) could get together in a more open setting without the sneaking around, which would cost him (Max) everything. If you watch and listen real close when she (Becca) sneaks and goes back to the club a second time, Max is already waiting for her at the Club. He says just because Ron and Mindy want to call things off, doesn't mean things have to end between us (Max and Becca). Thats when Becca rubs her belly and indicates to Max that she is pregnant and that she is calling things off between them. She tells the man whom the thinks is the father before even telling her husband, but only tells her husband she didn't want to tell him until she found out there were no complications.

For a LMN movie, I guess it could have been better and should have been in more detail, but this is what I've come to expect from Lifetime.

Sooooooo Baaaaaaaaad!

Let's see. We have an R rated movie about sex that doesn't have any nudity. That's already a recipe for disaster. Add to that the worst acting imaginable, and a childish plot that doesn't hold any surprises... and you have Open Marriage. As usual with really bad movies, there's laughter to be had in how cringe worthy they are... this is no exception.

Hard to imagine this being written, cast, produced, acted and directed by anyone with an IQ above 7. I wonder what that makes the IQ of the viewer, me? Lol

Terrible film in so many ways. How do people sleep at night knowing they made this? Weird.

I sleep at night by watching this dreck.

Cringe!

Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the weirdest Lifetime movies ever! The story was so confusing and had more plot holes than Swiss cheese!

So this married couple (Becca and Ron) struggling financially and also having problems conceiving, get talked into by their married best friends (Mindy and Max) to swing. They finally give in and do the business at Mindy and Max's house. The ground rules are they always have to be together when swinging and if one of them decides to stop, the rest of them also have to stop.

Mindy and Max invite Becca and Ron to go to an underground swingers' club, and at the club they do not go after new partners but stick to their own routine. Mindy and Ron wake up to find Becca and Max sleeping cuddled together in another room. Both the former angry because one of the ground rules was broken. Becca's excuse was Max had a bad back and needed to get comfortable. Ron calls off the arrangement and says they should all stop.

But Becca continues seeing Max at the club and lying to Ron about being at work. Meanwhile strange things happen. A bouquet of flowers is left on Becca and Ron's doorstep. A pram with an ugly doll is also left on their doorstep.

One night Ron gets a text invitation to the club. He goes and a woman tries to seduce him, they kiss and he pulls away saying he can't do it.

To cut a long confusing mess short, secrets come out on both sides and a huge blowout takes place among the two couples. Becca sulking at Ron. She tells Max at their next meeting that she can't do it any more because she's pregnant, and Max says yes of course I can't do this to Ron and Becca says we can't do this to Ron.

What I find stupid is here's Becca angry at poor Ron for going to the club with his only sin being a kiss, while she continues cheating on him with Max. And what is worse is that she is not sure who is the baby's father.

Anyway the ending is not important to discuss. But I found Becca to be absolutely disgusting and deplorable. Also the annoying part of the movie was in most of the Becca and Ron scenes he's wearing his shirt open and is eating cereals. I think Nikki Leigh would have done much better if she'd branched out from her Playboy shoots into other adult entertainment ventures.

I had to get to know the characters a bit and even though I thought the paranoid thread thing as it was happening was a sort of distracting gambit I found it to be very very satisfying in the end, pretty cool, everyone did a nice job! That pscycho blonde bitch was excellent!

WHY DO YOU IDIOTS KEEP WATCHING/RATING TV MOVIES, IF YOU HATE THEM?!
vnssyndrome8918 August 2023
Open Marriage (TV Movie 2017)

BASIC PLOT: Ron (Tilky Jones) and Becca (Nikki Leigh) are having a tough year, and it's taking a toll on their marriage. Ron was injured on the job, and hasn't been able to work. They were trying to have a baby, but that hasn't been going so well either. Now, Ron is finally on the mend, and maybe they can start putting things back together. Becca has had to be the primary bread winner for the past year, and the extra shifts as a nurse, has stretched Becca to her breaking point. All of this strife and uncertainty has taken a toll on Ron and Becca's sex life. They are feeling unconnected, until their best friends, Mindy (Kelly Dowdle) and Max (Jason Tobias), suggest opening up their marriage. Max and Mindy had been on the verge of divorce, but since they opened their marriage, they are a completely different couple. It takes some convincing, but they get Becca and Ron to try it out with them. After some hot swapping, Becca begins to notice a strange black car around their loft. Then, odd gifts begin appearing. Ron is becoming more and more jealous, even though his own behavior is not above reproach. Just when they were coming back together, it feels like they are going to lose it all. Can Ron and Becca pick up the pieces of their crumbling lives, and figure out who's stalking them, before things get out of control?

WHAT WORKS: *The principal and ancillary actors are all really hot, there's something for everybody here. For those who like the girl next door type, you have Nikki Leigh, for the exotic, Cassi Colvin, the vixen, Kelly Dowdle, the muscle bound hot guy, Jason Tobias, hot guy next door, Tilky Jones, the hot, sweet gay guy Zach Cramblit, and my favorite, for those who prefer whips and chains, there's Debra Wilson. The casting agent, Lindsay Chag, definitely gets a nod here (she also had casted some of my other favorite TV movies).

*The cover art is decent on this one, on so many of these, that's not the case.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: *There are spoilers in the trailer! WTF?! Who thought that was a good idea? And once again, who is the guy doing the voiceover in these trailers?! Please, send him back to Iron Chef America!

*Some of Tilky Jones' lines come off sounding wooden, and unbelievable. I'm usually a fan, but in this one, he's the weak link.

*If you're trying to hide the fact that you're pregnant, leaving a positive pregnancy test on the top of the trash, is probably NOT a good idea.

*Why would you be trying to have a baby when you can't work, due to injury? That seems pretty stupid. Also, making a loft your 'forever home,' when you're pregnant is acinine! Any loft is dangerous for a toddler, but this one is a death trap! I'd be afraid to have a dog in this place, much less an infant!

*There's no need to ruin Ron's (Tilky Jones) job prospects. It's stupid, and as a plot device, it goes nowhere, except to ruin the ending. Better to stick with the mysterious gifts, and the stalker, those things work. But it makes NO SENSE for the stalker to ruin Ron, especially since he's not the target of the obsession. It just doesn't work.

TO RECOMMEND, OR NOT TO RECOMMEND, THAT IS THE QUESTION: *I would recommend this movie to fans of erotic thrillers, TV movies, camp and eye candy. It's a fun ride, sit back and enjoy! This is a melodrama people, so there will be stereotypes (I'm talking to you ur13052788). That's part of the art form, idiots!

CLOSING NOTES: *This is a Made-For-TV movie, please keep that in mind before you watch\rate it. TV movies have a much lower budget, and so your expectations should be adjusted.

*I have no connection to the film, or production in ANY way. I am just an honest viewer, who wishes for more straight forward reviews. Hope I helped you out.

The 3 stars is for the attractive people
Nevergivea1027 April 2022
Just because you're good looking, doesn't mean you can act. I've seen better acting in porn. It's almost a comedy it's so bad. Watch ten minutes. Say to yourself, boy these people are attractive and turn it off.

"A Whole New Glorious World"
lavatch29 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Mindy and Max, Becca and Ron are all playing with fire when they agree to "open" their marriages. They set rules and boundaries, then break them. The next step is to try to cover their tracks with lies. But, nature abhors a vacuum, and the truth eventually comes back to bite them all.

The filmmakers developed good dramatic tension in this lurid drama that begins with the wife-swapping experiment described as opening up "a whole new glorious world." But each member of the cheating quartet will be in for a big surprise.

The suspense builds in trying to understand who is disrupting the lives of the spirited foursome. When Becca starts receiving flowers and a creepy baby carriage from an unknown "admirer," it is unclear who is the mystery man...or woman!

My favorite character in the film was Vulnavia, the proprietress of the Caligula underground bar. Password: Kumquat! It was Vulnavia who witnessed the comings and goings of the foursome and had to know who was the lynchpin engaged in dastardly deeds. Another good secondary character was the faithful Dylan, who provided good support to Becca in her work at the hospital.

Of the foursome, the most intriguing character was Becca, a mysterious and deceitful woman, who held her husband Ron to standards she herself could not meet. She was apoplectic when Ron failed to instantly tell her that he was shooting blanks during their desperate attempt at pregnancy. Yet she withheld from him the news that she was pregnant. She was furious at Ron for going back to the Caligula club, yet she did the same in a furtive meeting with Max.

The film's denouement offered such a smarmy resolution that it belied the truth about a shallow set of characters, whose values will probably be passed on to their beautiful new baby.

Warning: Spoilers
Way over the top film where a struggling couple agree to open their marriage with them participating in sex with his best friend and the friend's wife swapping each other.

As one can realize, things get quickly out of hand and lust and acts of disgust prevail throughout the film. Our original couple seem to be stalked and lives are ruined by this mysterious person.

Go know at the end that the friend's wife had lesbian tendencies, affection for the other woman and that she was creating all the havoc around.

Tying her husband up at the bed scene and threatening all with a gun by film's end is a little too much to bear.

The film is a perfect example of lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

A decent script that should keep you thinking "what is going on?"
Ed-Shullivan8 March 2018
I liked the film "Open Marriage". The title could have been changed to help draw in a bigger audience. Maybe the title could have been "And Baby Makes Three". The four main actors held their own in this story about free wheeling spouse swapping and yes, there were even a few hidden agendas which come to light near to the end of the film that impressed me since this was a low budget made for TV film.

There is some scheming going on but you will find yourself asking the question "whose zooming who?" Each of the four main characters and even a fifth character who the four meet at a swingers after hours club may or may not have something to do with some of the suspicious undertakings going on. One of the couples is very well off financially and they seem to rub their wealth directly into the faces of their less fortunate old and dear friends who are barely able to keep their heads above water. Can these friendships be maintained and how will the spouse swapping affect the foursomes friendship and marriages?

I will say that the film kept me interested and that it is worth a watch. I give the film a 6 out of 10 rating.

A Nice Movie I have seen recently
amar-2264118 March 2017
Before you browse my review and reach to a conclusion, i'd wish to tell you that i am a inflexible fan since childhood therefore of these reviews does not matter on behalf of me. however i am posting my honest confession for all those to whom it matters.I just love this Movie.

I thought it was great movie, much more three dimensional than I was expecting. director provided a massive dose of eye-candy and played her part well too, although it would have been nice for that part to have been developed more.
