Bunty and Mrs McCarthy go undercover as a dancer and cleaner to help the father prove Janek's innocence and discover not only that Verity was pregnant but was also a blackmailer. - Father Brown and Bunty agree a sudden, first visit after years from Mrs McCarthy's goddaughter Joselyn O'Donnell while her parents are on holiday is most suspicious. Inspired by a red plume, they find her working as exotic dancer at Crimson Feather, Maurice Cranage's burlesque cabaret where inspector Mallory tries in vain to hide he's a regular when a murder is discovered, the fatal stabbing of fellow dancer Verity Persby. Buty goes undercover as dancer, Mrs McCarthy as cleaner. Initial suspects are colored American pianist Oscar Bergeres, who had a crush on Verity, and Polish bouncer Janek Lasocki, her devoted lover who even refuses to plead his innocence.
