Great movie for Independence day
arindambiswas-7993015 August 2018
If want to see something on this Independence Day then Gold is the perfect film for that. There is no greater pride in sport than to see your country's flag being hoisted in international stage. Starting of the movie is bit slow but it will become interesting in later half. In one word your sentiment for the country will be amplified for sure. Acting of Akshay Kumar is awesome. He justified the charecter Tapan Das. But some of the historical fact is changed to dramatize the film. The journey of Indian hockey team to London Olympic 1948 is different than in the film. Mouni Roy did a good job in her charecter. You will feel thrill at the end of the film. Critics reviews for this film is bad but I personally thinks its a good movie with patrism in it.

A PATRIOTIC JUGGERNAUT !
SAMTHEBESTEST15 August 2018
GOLD REVIEW :

One of the most awaited film of the year for me especially looking at Akshay Kumar's script since now days and he was coming back after classic Padman so expectation from this one were high for obvious reasons. The trailer of the film was promising enough to build expectations among the people and now no hesitation to say that Gold lives up to the Expectations level, completely. I don't remember the last film which was released on Independence Day and totally deserved to be released on the day just because of its content and here comes Gold which I felt is completely deserving and probably the only deserving film for the Independence day release as far as this decade is concerned.

Talking about the story Gold is a journey of Hockey Team India's Struggle, Courage, Patients and Glorious Victory from pre independence period to Post independence period in typical filmy way. In acting Akshay Kumar has lived his character of a Bengali guy whose accent is completely amazing and his command over dialogue delivery is Superb. Mouni Roy as his wife looks Beautiful and mouths perfect Begali of that particular period. There is a big team of actors and everyone has done decent job which looks good on screen. Writing of the film its top notch, and is filled with plenty of Twists and cinematic moments. Dialogues are sober, quite encouraging and clap worthy. Cinematography is good because the locations of the film were set in old era, so the naturality should have remained intact and happily it remains intact. The Hockey Match sequences were shot in tactical way and have been supported by very well by VFX team & thrilling Background music.

Done with all the positives of the film now coming towards the minuses. The biggest minus point of the film its music. Couple of songs are irritating and completely useless while the title song and one situational song are somewhat tolerable. Reema Kagti has done a very good job but I am personally very disappointed as I find the script was a Masterpiece material and Reema has failed to achieve that Masterpiece tag. Typical film-making and commercial vision has spoiled the Classic content at some level which doesn't let this film end up on a classic note. Come on, you don't need every scene to be Filmy and twisty, sometimes you can just go with the flow. But that doesn't mean it is a bad film, it is very good one indeed. Though, it could have been a Classic. Two patriotic films I remember with almost no minuses at all are Chak De India and Dangal Where The Masterpiece writing was molded into classic cinematic gem and the credit definitely goes to the directors and their vision which seems lacking in the case of Gold. One of the most important thing about those two Films was that these two classics didn't have any useless love making scenes and Gold has couple of loo-breaks in that form.

In final talk, I would say Gold is the most deserving Independence Day release of this decade because of Shivering last 30 Minutes portion and despite not being a classic this one is still a must watch if you want to see some patriotic Hysteria this Independence Day. This one is a winner All The Way... Critically as well as Commercially. This one was a 9/10* material but Reema Kagti has made out a 7/10* film while the great run of Akki continues....

In the run that will unite our nation!
MuviFan7315 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw Akshay with all his Bengali shade, I decided to watch this movie. I would say I was not disappointed.

Tone, Script & Story: The film is scripted in making India winner in hockey in Olympics without the 'British' India tag in year 1948. India won gold continuously for three times, last time in 1936, so why can't it without British tag one more time. The reason is India got divided; the team got divided (if not the age). It occurred to me in trailer and I got my answer after watching the movie.

Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography: The movie has its own elements to entertain which are directed nicely. It is a visual treat as well. Music: It was all 'good'. My favorite track from the movie is 'Naino Ne Bandhi'. Acting: Justified.

Final Verdict: Watch the movie and let it stay 'In the run that will unite our nation'.

If akshay had played role of coach or player ,the movie would have been something far better. Yet it is watchable for the efforts of rest of the actors.

Relive the 1948 olympics
planetcupid15 August 2018
The movie has everything one can expect to watch in a sports movie filled with nationalism.

When Natiy Anthem was played at the end of the movie, everyone stood up to pay respect. That can be a standing ovation from viewers to the movie. I enjoyed it.

Team wins but Akshay misses it.
saraswat-dhoom215 August 2018
GOLD :

Exactly after 11 years we are again watching a Movie based on National game Hockey but this times it's about 1st Olympic Gold medal won by free India.

The story starts from 1936 Berlin Olympics in Germany where Indian Hockey team was actually British India Hockey team which wins the Gold by 8-1 against Germany in their home ground where Tapan Das(Akshay) sees a dream of winning gold for free India. But due to war the Olympics gets called off and in 1946 he gets to know about the game to be held in 1948 and also there comes a news of India getting free from British and he goes for his dream again and Samrat(Kunal Kapoor) the then hockey team captain asks Das to make Imtiaz(Vineet Kr. Singh Mukkabaaz fame) to be the Captain and they create a team for 1948 Olympics which includes Himmat Singh(Sunny Kaushal) & Raghubir Pratap Singh (Amit Sadh) as the team members.

Mean while India gets freedom and country is divided into two countries divide the team and dream also. Now Das' dream gets shattered again and later anyhow a new team is formed and what happens next is the rest part.

Coming to the story of movie is good covering up the pain of partition of country and pain of playing under British rule is shown in a powerful manner but what lacks in the movie is the way players play the game is awful and we can clearly see that they are not professional at all .

Akshay Kumar as Tapan Das does not have much to do in the movie just going all over the country to select the player and being alcoholic is part for him. A very good job is dine by Sunny Kaushal as Himmat Singh and by Amit Sadh as R P Singh are appreciable.

At some point we recall Chak de India but this movie is not of that mark but it is watchable once and for the proud of our country #EkBaarGOLDdekhna is ok.

This Movie tells the Story of the Journey of Indian Hockey Team from British Era to Free-India. It feels like we are in those days. Simply awesome Screenplay, Dialogues and Background Score. Akshay Kumar did a great job there in his role. Kunal Kapoor is Awesome as he is. The role of Himmat Singh Played by Sunny Kaushal is the USP of this movie. For me, After a Long Time, Good movie to watch on This Independence Day.

do sau saal ki ghulami
beevenkat22 August 2018
In #gold, akshay kumar is the creator of the first indian team, post independence, which wins the gold at the olympics. Of course, his main objective is to avenge the 'do sau saal ki ghulami'. He faces a lot of obstacles, his players r not united, hes not sure of receiving funds n his drunk behavior works against him. Sincere performances by the entire cast, especially #sunnykaushal, under the able direction of #reemakagti, make this film watchable. But the forced bangla mannerisms shouldve been avoided. Music is bad. Rating 3/5.

Akshay Kumar and team Gold will win your hearts
msdianforever15 August 2018
Reema Kagti deserves the first mention here. She has created an absolute gem, a well balanced plot and an amazing script which has comedy, emotions and Patriotism in the right amount. Akshay Kumar is mind blowing! He nails each and every aspect of his character. His screen presence is something that cannot be missed and the mini monologue he gives before the climax scene is awesome. Sunny Kaushal is a surprise package! Just like his brother Vicky, he amazes the audience with his performance as Himmat. Kunal Kapoor, Amit Saadh and Vineet Singh have also done a brilliant job! The film keeps you engaged and sticked to your seats, the one liners are genuinely funny and definitely increase the entertainment aspect. Last 10-15 minutes of the film are the best! From the semi final till the climax scene there are a lot of Goosebumps! Music is average but work well with the film as most of the songs are situational. Naino Ne Baandhi and Rasta Rasta are a treat to hear in the theatre. Overall the film is a perfect blend of Patriotism and Entertainment. Go for Gold

Story Was Interesting but Process Was Not up to the Mark
Dibyayan_Chakravorty16 January 2019
A message to Bollywood movie directors - When you're making a film based on a true story, please keep the historical data accurate. That'll ultimately raise the standard of the film.

1. Team members' names are different. 2. In 1948 Olympic, India beat Great Britain in the final by 4-0, not 4-3.

...and yes, those boring stupid songs were really not needed. Or, at least include some good songs, if you really have to.

Story was interesting but process is not up to the mark.

Gold is a poorly researched, failed opportunity
msunando15 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Gold - it's the perfect formula to rake in the moolah while tugging on our heartstrings and emotions that tend to run high on the independence day. Draw on the backdrop of the British rule in undivided India, build on the long cherished dream of flying the tricolour high, and if you are able to pull off the idea of beating the rulers at their own game, director Reema Kagti has the ingredients of the perfect blockbuster.

Alas, Gold isn't what it was destined to be, and its trump card, Akshay Kumar, is indeed its weakest link. Playing Tapan Das, an eccentric Bengali man who is the national hockey team's joint "manager" with the aforesaid long cherished dream, Akshay Kumar misfires and goes completely off target. It's a poorly sketched character to start with as there isn't any explanation offered about his credentials to be the manager. Further, he simply fails to get under the skin of the desired protagonist and keeps it superficial. He has made no attempt to even brushing up the Bengali language and keeps calling younger lads "Dada". Very poorly researched, culturally speaking. Constantly hamming, he actually grates on the nerves, especially in the second half, where his role becomes more of a caricature. Gold isn't "Chak De India", the envious nature of a few players hasn't been crafted well. Why the coach of the team played by Kunaal Kapoor doesn't accompany the team to the Olympic venue remains unexplained. Gold fails to evoke the pathos associated with the partition too - it's a huge opportunity lost. The music is forgettable - the best score was the national anthem playing in the end, predictably.

In conclusion, Gold misses the mark by a mile. Akshay Kumar should have taken a leaf out of Aamir Khan's "Secret Superstar" and passed on the mantle to the younger and hugely talented cast, instead of being in the forefront.

Where is Dyand Chand?
asb_deutsch10 September 2019
An good attempt of history that could have been directed better. Pros: A great pick to be released on Independence Day. The last 30 minutes had great acting and patriotism. Better than other Bollywood picks which just shows actors in European bars and beaches. Cons: The first 30 minutes didn't had good acting and was very monotonous. Too many English words used when Tapan Das speaks the script. He keeps calling younger lads "Dada" which seems queer Way too predictable for a fictionalized script. Unnecessary songs and dancing.

A little dose of comedy is good, but not on a national scale. The director should have respected the audience's IQ. Does this movie worth gold. Maybe silver!

My rating = 6.5/10

Perfect patriotic blockbuster
prudra-3497515 August 2018
Akshay Kumar is in its best form and giving superhits one after another. I am surprised that how could a man get so much well written script. Amit sadh is very underrated and a very good actor he proves that. Kunal Roy Kapoor and Vineet Singh is truly a gem Sunny Kaushal is the surprise package and really a turrup ka ikka in both acting and movie Direction of Reema kagti is very concerned not a single dull moment. She had a tight screenplay So, finally Gold is a very well crafted film and the last 30 minutes should surely give goosebumps to every indian

Akshay Kumar is unstoppable!
fillerruth15 August 2018
Hockey, at its best, is an incredibly fast-paced game and any film about the sport has got to capture that inherent momentum for it to work. Gold fails to do that, dragged down by a storyline that puts too much store by the anticipated crowd-pulling power of a Bollywood A-lister. The script, and the real events that inspired it, take a backseat in the process. As a result, what could have been a blinder of a movie barely manages to hobble its way to a climax that holds no surprises because it is a part of Indian sporting folklore.

'Gold' recreates the journey of this spirited and lesser-known team that upstaged the British at the 1948 Olympics and made a statement against the English subjugation of 200 years. Reema Kagti tells an insightful and entertaining story and take us back to that moment in history, which is not often spoken about or celebrated. The first half is slow paced and the film takes quite a while to establish the characters and set up the plot. As we witness India winning its first gold as a free nation, you also see the Pakistani players cheer for Indians playing on the field. Moments like this, make 'Gold' a film which is more just a sports drama. This one is surely worth its weight in gold.

Gold is inspired by India winning its first gold medal as a free country at the 1948 Olympics in Britain. Winning over our erstwhile colonial masters would have been sweet indeed and the story loses none of its strength as it is narrated in Gold. Overall, Gold is a well plotted drama that sometimes devolves into schmaltz and melodrama. However, it gives us solid two-and-half hours of tricolour hued entertainment. We suggest XL sized popcorn tubs.

Reema Kagti and Rajesh Devraj's script is not a true account of a real-life incident, but is a fictional and gripping take on the actual story of free India's first gold. There's never a dull moment and Kagti's direction deserves credit for it. All in all, Akshay and his boys deliver the perfect Independence Day release and win not just gold, but also hearts! Go for 'Gold'!

Reema Kagti and Rajesh Devraj's story is surely something that deserves to be told. Of course, it has been dramatized and slightly fictionalized but it's done well. Reema Kagti's screenplay is topnotch and she keeps viewers captivated. On the whole, GOLD is a brilliant, touching saga that would surely entertain viewers and make them hoot for the retro men in blue. At the box office, it is sure to strike Gold! Highly recommended!

All said and done, Gold isn't Gold because of one person. As shown in the film, it's a team work & hence it's victorious. Akshay Kumar is unstoppable & Gold will do nothing but add yet another hit to his account. Watch it for the pure and informative entertainment.

Misleading and Pathetic
hemantm-3233918 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Story, Screenplay & Direction are a big let down of this movie. All the actors have wored hard work in portraying their characters. But what can you do if the script is so pathetic... Lots of misleading things shown in the movie.

When you have a real story available, then why do you need an inspired fabricated version, which is truly pathetically. In reality India won the game 4:0 against England, why do we need to show the artificial filmy struggle of 4:3.

Lots of Bad..

1) What is Askhay Kumar's character's qualifications for the team selection. He is neither a former player nor a senior team selection member. And how do you have this one man doing the team selection for the entire nation.....Where are the former Indian players who won 3 Olympic Gold Medals for British India ?

2) Why is the team coach not been sent to Olympics. He's shown listening the match in India on a radio commentary. If you can give this man the team coach role on preparation, then why is he not in the main games with the team. Probably the 3 months leave he had taken to become a part time coach had expired. Come On !!! he is shown as a former Olympic Gold Winning Captain.

3) Indian National Hockey Team goes to a charitable monestary for Pre Olympic preparation, and the hero of the movie sponsors the cost of team management by his own & borrowed funds. Has the writers & director gone nuts ??? Come on its a National Team not some gully cricket.

4) Akshay Kumar's Bengali character is completely out of sync. And the actress seems to have the biggest lips in the world.

Overall it's a really bad film.

One time watch
ishansharma-9560511 November 2018
The movie is a historical fiction based on real events. The main theme of the movie is grit of the protagonist supplemented by doses of nationalism where even grit does not help him. There is no dull moment in the movie except for the filler commentary depicting events between 1936 and 1946, which runs for 5 minutes near the start of the movie. However, nothing is so great to demand a second viewing. The movie is average to good throughout it's length, but never approaches greatness.

Every other Bollywood sports flick
rock_cool10 November 2018
You can make the story of this movie from every other sports flick from bollywood. There is nothing different in this movie, from a carzy passionate person making a national team to a government board with all negatives. I will say that you will remembers Chak De India, Mary Kom, Dangal, Soorma, etc with all the same story line.
