The Nanny: What a shame
Platypuschow19 October 2018
The Nanny was a pick and mix movie for me, I went in knowing nothing but was happy to see Jaime Murrays name pop up on the opening credits. I would class her as one of my favourite actresses and just don't think she gets the recognition she deserves.

Here in The Nanny she puts in a career best performance, but in the end it simply didn't matter.

The Nanny tells the story of a single mother who (Shocker) finds herself needing a nanny for her two children. In comes Ms Murray who is a mysterious woman that everyone deems perfect for the job, except the daughter.

Truth be told the first half of The Nanny is excellent, it's so well crafted, beautifully shot and gripping. Then the second half comes and it all falls apart, I mean really badly! A combination of silliness, poor sfx and rushed concepts ruin what was primed and ready to be an excellent film.

Part horror, part fantasy this dark fairytale also stars Nicholas "Xander from Buffy" Brendon and Schuyler "Country Singer" Fisk. It's heartbreaking to me when a film with such potential falls apart as badly as this did. I would love to see someone reshoot/rewrite the second half as it has unlimited potential!

Sadly it's potential squandered, though Murray is excellent and the first half is very enjoyable the rest of the film is an utter mess.

The Good:

First half

Jaime Murray

Masterfully shot

The Bad:

Second half

Some goofy sfx

Lots of unanswered questions

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Jaime Murray seems to connect herself to flawed movies

It's always nice to see Nicholas Brendon take time out of his busy schedule of prison to make movies

Awesome Start
tinahale-2510918 February 2019
The movie started out really awesome and the concept was amazing but things got bad pretty quick. Jaime Murray was fantastic!!!! But the girl who played Noa had this constant smirk/grin on her face like she was about to burst out laughing at any moment and was trying to restrain herself from doing so........just BAD acting on her part. Towards the end it gave us a cheap Sci-Fi feel. Another one of those movies that could have been REALLY good if ONLY someone had thought it through and cast a good actress for the lead instead of someone who obviously did not know how to act......who auditioned her?????

Shockingly bad

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen and I've seen a lot of bad ones. Bad script. Nothing makes sense. The nanny just shows up, mother knows nothing about her and she leaves her kids to her the same evening. She basically never heard of "agency" that nanny comes from but it doesn't matter. Later in the movie she meets a guy that lives in same town and had lost his daughter, yet she is the only person in town that doesn't know who he is. "Special effects" are 90's Power Rangers level bad. Everything is just awful in this movie and the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is the small amount of suspense in the first 20 minutes. Don't watch this, people. It is not even "So bad that it's entertaining". It's insulting...

This must be the worst movie I have seen in a long time. The plot was all over the place, the camera work was so messy and jumpy. The story just didn't flow and I can't believe this is under the genre of horror as it is the least scary thing you will ever watch, absolute tripe!! I know I am ranting but I just am astounded at how bad it was. How did David know about Noa and Michael hw did he track them down? Why was he watching them? How were the kids other worldly but living with their mother? How did the mother not know? Why was Emma floating around the woods? Why did the fairies in David's lair look like little cgi critters yet the one in the cage was a human sized one? Why did Emma and Leonore look humanoid? Why didn't they use a bit of cgi instead of white plastic sheeting for Leonores wings? How did Noa's family not know about Emma going missing or that her dad was David when Frank said 'everyone knows David Quin'. Omg it was absolutely terrible!

Wait what?

Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching the nanny and omg at 1st as soon as i saw xander from buffy i was like "ok" but then as the Goosebumps cinematography and the post 3d effects started showing up i because suspicious that this might not be a good movie. There are alot of plot holes and weird plot devices that somtimes seem uneccecary at times. Such as the "fairy" says lots of child fairys end up in orphanages wich made me confused because did the mother choose to live in poverty and have 2 orphaned children on purpose? Because they didnt reference her having a husband previously just that she was single and looking. She goes from wanting a nanny for 3 days tops to having one move in not because te kids like her but because the "fairy" pressures her. Another time was when she invites the guy from the bar to her house where he asks to pee and instead he goes to knock on the daughters door without the "fairy" scening him or knowing wich child is unsure about the "fairy" just lucky guess. I can meantion more but there are so many moments of "wait what" that ur head will swim with the sheer amounts of time it will happen. This movie is listed as sci-fi horror and ive heard it referenced as horror fantasy but i havent laughed so much scince i watched the movie the room. Fun to watch with friend but this is carreer ending for all involved indeed.

Basically a Grimm fairytale...& boy, it is grim (if by grim, you mean a complete bag of crap).
sian_b_badger13 June 2018
Special effects were dreadful & the plot seemed like it was concocted by a 13 year old girl who is obsessed with fairies, folklore & fantasy. It is NOT a horror by any means. There are scarier episodes of The Simpsons at Halloween.

Interesting Concept
Jnmarable126 May 2018
I thought the concept of the movie was interesting but there were plot holes. Had the story been more fleshed out I think it would've been better. I loved the fairy storyline and the acting is good. The fast climax at the end leaves the story feeling too rushed. It was nice to see that movie didn't turn out to be just the same old evil nanny horror trope we've seen before. I just think had there been more time put into developing the story it wouldve made for a much better movie.

Not Horror or Sci-Fi but pure Fantasy
Angel_Peter27 May 2018
I do understand if some people get disappointed if they believe it is a horror movie they are going to watch. This movie is not scary unless maybe for kids.

I believed myself I was going to watch a science fiction movie and it is even less that except for some weaponry.

But if you like me love a good or is it bad fairy tale then this may be the right movie for you. This movie is not a gem but it was fine entertainment for me and I do not regret spending my time here. So if you are into fantasy creatures of the night you may have a movie for you here. I did also enjoy the way the actor played the nanny that was kind of spooky.

If you are looking for a sci-fi or horror movie you should look other places

This wasn't what I thought it was going to be
nightroses27 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I anticipated a horror film about a nanny from hell, or at least a psychotic nanny. Always American films portray the villains with English accents. I ended up pretty intrigued and then wondered what was going on. It was quite messy and the story could've been better if it wasn't for the tree man, or the warehouse full of small insect people. I won't give away too much.

Did they run out of money?
Tr-u-mpbilly26 May 2018
Started off good, and had an interesting story throughout. But, as it went along things became a bit jumbled and low budget. The nanny's costume towards the end was awful - they would have been better off without it. So, so close to a good movie.

Anyone who gave this movie more than 2 stars, worked on the film

It was so stupid. The dialog was hilariously atrocious. You know that girl that really likes horses, adult coloring books, The Labyrinth, and considers herself a writer? She wrote this movie.

The iron part.
dannybraaksma23 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Biggest issue i had was when the drunk man told the girl to use iron against the fairy's and which she did.It was effective as the nanny/fairy could not enter the room and you could see her appereance change but how did the little girl hang that piece of iron above the door when she is a fairy herself?

Plot holes and terrible effects
illusion_at_rest1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Something wrong with the whole plot and a lot of details are left unexplained. So if Noa is a fairy what's Michael? How did he manage to learn the spells so quick and survived in the water? What's worst is the effects...did they run out of budget towards the end of the movie?

Twisted nanny
TheLittleSongbird7 June 2018
'Nanny' drew me into seeing it, with a cool poster/cover, an slightly intriguing but very derivative premise and as someone with a general appreciation for horror. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive.

It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws those films have are present here, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'Nanny', with a plethora of problems (huge ones too) and doesn't do enough with its potential, which was hardly small. There is next to nothing to recommend and it is a sleeper.

Lets start with the positives. The scenery is atmospheric and spooky.

It also started off quite well on an unsettling note.

Unfortunately, it is not done justice by the rather direct to video schlocky way it's shot and edited, it was very clear that the film was made in a rush with no care or enthusiasm.

Going on further to the negatives, the story does feel paper thin, disjointed and over-stretched and some of it feels vague, under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less scary. Too many characters are too sketchy and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates.

Making the film feel bland and forgettable with not enough heart put into it. The effects are ropy at best, the sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions) and it's best not mentioning the uniformly lumbering and histrionic acting. The nanny is the worst example of the latter, completely takes away from the attempted twisted nature of the atmosphere.

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling, with lots of clichés and no depth whatsoever, while the pace goes to a standstill very quickly and drags on forever with next to nothing going on worth caring about, never recovering. Found too many the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the supposedly creepy atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations and the lack of tension and suspense. Would not have minded the lack of originality (the film is extremely derivative and in a dumbed and watered down way) if the story and atmosphere were at least alright in execution, in reality they were both dreadfully done.

A lot of 'Nanny' has underdeveloped plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you jump or shocked are far from creative or scary and are pretty tame. The ending makes the film finish on an incomplete and confused whimper.

There is not enough threat here and what there is of it tends to be used poorly, it is completely unimaginative and more odd than creepy, completely failing to show any sense of horror. Some badly sagging momentum too. The direction is leaden, inexperience seems to be all over the film, and the music doesn't really fit and is quite monotonous.

All in all, very bad. 2/10 Bethany Cox

Good but felt like a re-make of 'The Guardian' (1990)
Kencrogers30027 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This was a good movie, some of the acting was not that great, but the main characters pulled it off. Great cinematography. The only flaw is that it felt like a newer version or remake of "The Guardian" (1990) with Jenny Seagrove. Begins with a family that loses a child to druid-esque monsters in the woods. Then move to a family who needs a Nanny that just shows up (not on the list). She is connected to the woods (again like The Guardian), and not nice. It is a good film. I enjoyed it. The woman who plays the Nanny does a GREAT job!

I need to face the darkness to see the light
nogodnomasters6 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In the opening scene Emma (Elle Coventry) goes missing in the woods, taken by a shadowy figure in the night. We then shift to another family who live in the same town of Nerstrand. Anna (Schuyler Fisk) works shift work and hires a strange Nanny (Jaime Murray) with earth witch powers to watch over her children. The action slowly builds as a mystery of the town unfolds.

This was a simple basic film that was simply done well. Jaime Murray as the Nanny was spot on with well chosen words that read like a classic novel. Smoothly shifting plot.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity. Rated Canadian 14A

Beautiful and chilling....
wildsparrow1611 July 2018
"Never forget who you are....."

I am surprised by the low reviews because I really enjoyed this movie. It is a slow-building chiller, set in modern times, about a fragile family trying to hold it together. The single mother works double shifts and needs some help caring for her emotionally-fragile (i.e. probably clairvoyant) son, and wayward daughter. Enter the nanny, who I found to be hypnotic. She is beautiful and chilling at the same time. The daughter is leary from the start, but unable to convince Mom that the woman is not right. In the meantime, mom befriends a local neighbor man and we soon learn of his history and motives, which prove to be rather disturbing. I did not find this movie confusing, nor did I find it leaves you hanging. If you listen to all the dialog, everything will make sense in the end and no one is who they appear to be. Their motives are not so transparent as we thought. It was very atmospheric, no jump scares, no gore. Just a beautiful and chilling story.

What Began As A Strong Story...
twelve-house-books21 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
...petered out into a dismal failure. What happened? Did the first director quit midstream and bring in an undergraduate hopeful immersed in Dungeons & Dragons and other similar Fantasy-driven drivel? The acting is really strong from a few of the actors such as the mother, the police officer, the little girl, the nanny, the drunks in the bar, the fairy-killer, and the lady in the office at the elementary school. I was really interested in the story--it had me utterly hooked--until the entrance of the fairies. I would have been much happier with the town being controlled by witches, though that concept has been way overdone for the past half-century. Good fairies, bad fairies at eternal war with one another. An idea that I can't suspend my disbelief in long enough to take seriously. I'd like my two hours back please. You're fairies, right? Make it happen!

So much potential!
sleninsl31 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had us on the edge of our seats for four-fifths of its length. It was building up beautifully, pieces were falling into place, it was - no pun intended - spell binding! Then the last 15 minutes were so incredibly rushed and disjointed; they just threw in some seemingly random scenes that obviously had connection but no relationship was explained. So many gaps of plot, so many questions were left unanswered, and many more arose. Just when you come to realize that the nanny is not the villain... But who is the villain? Why? What does it mean, Noa is the protector? How did she become a fairy in the first place?! What happened to Emma? On and on. Ad infinitum. The movie should be made into a series, if running time is a factor. Apparently there is way too much story to be told in an average movie length - so spread it out. Give us a backstory, a mythology to follow. And fill in the gaps in the action!
