What difference The Day makes! 24 very intense hours
Coventry25 February 2019
There are so many TV-series being made in Flanders, Belgium, but I think I have been watching the absolute BEST and the absolute WORST series in parallel during the past weeks. A few days ago, I submitted a review for "Open Water", and as much as I respect many of its cast and crew members, it's really the most idiotic, overly pretentious and substantially void series ever to appear on television in Belgium. During the same period, but on a different channel, they aired "De Dag", and this series is more than just "good". It is, hands down, the most intelligent, original, suspenseful and exhilarating TV-format ever conceived in this small country. After literally every episode of "Over Water", my wife and I felt furious and frustrated because it was tedious and uneventful, whereas every episode of "De Dag" was 60 minutes of adrenalin-rushing tension, plot twists, cliffhangers, stupendous dialogues and phenomenal performances.

"De Dag" is a brilliant concept thought up by Jonas Geirnaert and Julie Mahieu. The former, I have been following for almost 15 years. He's usually a comical genius and created the terrific animated short "Flatlife" (look it up on YouTube!) and the downright hilarious cartoon-series of a hostile and violent gnome named Wesley. With a few equally gifted friends, like Lieven Scheire and Jelle De Beule, Geirnaert formed a collective named Neveneffecten ("Side Effects"), and they made unique documentary-style protests everyday shenanigans, like corporate call centers and nightly betting games on TV. "De Dag" is Jonas' first venture into fiction, together with his wife Julie Mahieu, and again he's very successful. The story deals with a seemingly old-fashioned bank heist and hostage situation, but really nothing is what it seems. The innovative aspect of "De Dag" lies in the narrative structure. Every episode is told twice, once from the "outside", with a massive police operation being set up to interact with the gangsters and resolve the hostage taking. There are negotiators, special intervention squads, bomb experts and hectic media circuses. The next episode always covers the same time span but seen from the "inside" via the hostage takers, the prisoners and their petrified families. The concept would normally lead to many continuity errors and repetitive sequences, but "De Dag" is so fantastically written that every cliffhanger or plot twists is followed by yet another and even more ingenious twist.

The series benefits from great performances from the all-star ensemble cast (all-star in Flanders, that is) and solid direction, but the truly praiseworthy quality of "De Dag" definitely remains the screenplay. The writing is near-flawless, with sublime tension building and character development. Not all plot twists are equally plausible, but there's nothing that a little bit suspension of disbelief can't solve. Marvelous series, not just mandatory viewing for all Belgians, but also highly recommended to seekers of superiors thriller/actions series from all over the world!

Another example of wonderfully smart European production, simple, strapped from unnecessary characters and scenes, sauté as-is. Intelligent puzzle and binge worthy show!

The best

Hard to add anything to Coventry's review: The Day / De Tag is brilliant- taut, original, and very, very clever. The writing is brilliant. Like Coventry, I feel as if I've viewed the worst and the best of European TV drama this week. The Day is the best.

Brilliant Writing
vickeybsht28 November 2018
It starts slow but from the fifth episode it takes off and goes binge-ably to a breathtaking end. Character development is sheer brilliance to such a level that no matter how much screen time one got you will remember it.

This is what a brilliant script can do. This heist thriller has been a flawless whodunit. Kudos to the producers and directors. An unpretentious intelligent heist drama, a must watch for every crime thriller lover.

Finally a show that's smart from start to finish. The alternate view points are fascinating and the character development superb. Well done to everyone involved. It's hard to settle for the usual moronic pap after quality like this.

How come this show isn't more famous???
rklemm0519 November 2020
That is one smart, well-written and addictive series... Much better than Casa de Papel, because a lot more realistic, to begin with... And also it doesn't try and picture thiefs like they fight for a noble cause, like Casa does. It's full of unexpected twists, (almost) no idle time. In a nutshell, I wish there more like these.

Kudos to this Belgian Crime series for its brilliant script and crazy screenplay. I love the way how it unfolds its mystery gradually through such intriguing drama.

glued to the screen until last second of credits
jokemijn15 February 2019
Congrats to the makers - there was lots of buzz in the media, i originally didn't believe the series would be able to fulfill its promises, being made with such a small budget in such a small country. But it kept me glued to the screen until the very last second of the credits, wanting more. Several scenes got stuck in my mind until days after. I felt sympathy for every single character, all background stories were weaved in without the need for flashbacks or jumps in time. The linearity and original point of view of every 2 episodes contribute to building up the tension.

Another fine Flemish production.
aprilmike-519916 July 2019
All round terrific stuff. Interesting way of telling the story, lots of"twists" and sicko's. Worth watching. Loved the Frayer character and the officer with the cold.

Very good, still dark at 0800 in the morning, Europe is such a drab place!!!

Really good and very surprising
the-anykey23 September 2018
A really unique way of how the episodes "flow".

Has a taste of La Casa de Papel, but in many way much more enjoyable as everything said much more realistic and surprising.

Not Bad
mbazhome11 December 2020
This series was best at the beginning. Dragged on for a few too many episodes. Definitely liked the police episodes better than the bad guy episodes. Reminded me of Danish series Below the Surface which I enjoyed more. Overall not bad.

It's ok.
vincent-u1627 January 2019
A very intruiging storyline concerning a heist in a small Flemish bank, viewed from the side of the authorities and from the side of the criminals / hostages.

Although we quickly read a comparison to 'La Casa de Papel' (Money Heist), this series sets out to be more realistic and remains on a 'safe' path throughout the season. Which is quite typical for a Belgian production...

The acting for the most part is ok but there are moments I thought to myself: 'that take maybe needed a reshoot.'

Oh well, overall a very enjoyable binge watch on a Sunday afternoon.

Undoubtedly the best Belgian/Flemish series I have seen
BeneCumb13 September 2020
It is characterised by novel approaches, witty twists and turns (yet reasoned), versatile team play, unexpected ending - without maintaining bare realism and uneasy relations usually occurring with events like this. Preparations of heists, hostage taking, negotiating and the like are never glamurous, all sides can make mistakes, and the results are seldom as expected. But most of viewers need still more that arid documentary, so the alternate storytelling here is a great way to keep up the thrill and ponder on and over what really happened when a episode e.g. ends with a gunshot...

Thus, a really good series, highly recommended. I wonder if Season 2 comes as well...

Far superior to La Casa Del Papel
ScGreen2014 March 2019
Seat of the pants thrill ride from 1st till last episode. Oh my! What a gem! Very little drama bits. Most scenes are focused on the police and behind-the-scene hostage taking actions. I was totally glued from start to finish.

Outstandingly great!

Titled 'The Day' in English. The storyline - a bank robbery - didn't seem as though it was going to up to much. The way of telling the story, from different perspectives and jumping back and forward in time has been done before - most extremely and catastrophically in Rellik.

The actual shows are so much better than could have been expected. The switching to the other perspective and watching the same events as in the previous episode is done extremely well. Just enough overlap that you don't lose track but are still kept hooked as you learn more about events. Most importantly, the characters all come across as real people. Too many shows nowadays make characters larger than life with almost superpowers of deduction and the obligatory computer person that can hack into anywhere is seconds. Here we have a tech guy asked about breaking encryption on a memory device. "How long?" asks the detective. "A few minutes to a billion years." is the honest answer! I suggest that you don't read the episode summaries or any spoiler reviews. There are several very intelligent plot twists that would be spoiled by advanced knowledge and who doesn't enjoy playing detective and trying to guess the ending before the police??

We've watched a number of European series with subtitles and if they are well done like this it isn't a distraction at all. This is absolutely worth spending the time on.

The critic and entertainment-seeker in me were both delighted.
ravivenkitaraman31 July 2020
De Dag has you on the edge of your seat throughout its 12 episodes (think early seasons of the Keifer Sutherland show 24) but there's a realism that elevates it to an entirely different level, plus the twists are much more imaginative. Hats off also to flawless writing and acting.

Flemish best!!

Incredible plot, very good and realistic acting/actresses/actors and fabulous scenery. And the well-known Belgian "chaos" in the excitement of actions. Close to «The Bridge», my all time favourite! When is Season 2 planned for??

A Great Start
DavoZed20 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For about a quarter of the series, it is excellent.

By the midpoint, it has begun to drown in fake plot twists and has become largely nonsensical.

At the 3/4 point, the series should be over but it lumbers on, with ever more plot twists, like a Frankenstein monster.

I would think that an excellent series could have been had, with about 6 episodes and about 10% of the plot twists.

Outstanding !
marctronic17 March 2019
One of the best series of all time.

A bank robbery in a small town is completely out of control. Police and hostage-takers begin a nerve-racking cat and mouse game that keeps the city in suspense for a whole day. The events are shown alternately from the perspective of the police, the press, as well as from the point of view of bank robbers, victims and their families. Each new episode airs a small piece of the veil and the viewer gradually realizes that there is more to it than first thought.

Excellent start
anamalapikica10 April 2023
The first 6 episodes were magnificent and the twists were great, however episodes 7-10 were a bit slow-paced and seemed a bit not connected. The final two were more like the start, but the ending seemed a bit rushed.

The colour palete was a bit dark and blueish. That bothered me because that is not how real life is (and that series is praised for being more realistic than La Casa De Papel) but it represents the atmosphere of the whole show.

Overall, a very good series with excellent twists, interesting perspective and loveable characters. This series is a good choice if you're looking for a series to binge watch this weekend.

I usually don't like Flemish television, but this is something else. This was my first time binge watching a Flemish series, and my bf first time binge watching, ever. This can only be written by criminal masterminds who, thank God, decided to make a series out of it. Good job!
