Ventilator, a must-watch Marathi film, which projects the values of family, human relationships, behaviour and emotional bonds.

Warning: Spoilers
Ventilator is a beautiful Marathi film directed by Rajesh Mapuskar (Ferrari ki Sawaari fame) and produced by Priyanka Chopra under the banner of her company Purple Pebble Pictures. It is a multistarrer film with Ashutosh Gowariker and Jitendra Joshi in pivotal roles. It is a family drama which talks about the values of human relationships, emotions. Indian family is defined in this film through a dialogue: 'They might fight, but stick together, that is the beauty of Indian Family'. The very name of the film ventilator rings an alarm in the mind that it might be about somebody's death or somebody's suffering or about some mourning. Although the film revolves around the patriarch falling critically ill, the tone of the film is realistic and with quirky situational humour. The first half of the film indeed seemed pretty long with the introduction of family members and relatives (almost everyone belonging to the family tree) and their responses towards a critical situation, the film picks up pretty well in the second half. It does make you laugh and also makes you feel the lump in your throat. A must-watch beautiful film.

The film begins with the news of Gajanan Karmekar (Patriarch of Karmekar family) falling critically ill and being on ventilator, getting flashed to the family members and relatives. It happens just 7 days prior to Ganapati Festival. It is interesting to watch how different family members and relatives respond to this crisis in the family. The Karmekar family is supposed to have a get together in their ancestral home in Konkan region in lieu of Ganapati Festival. But now with Gajanan being critically ill, relatives are less worried about him being on ventilator but more worried about the fact that if something happens to him, their celebration plans for Ganapati Festival would be ruined. Afraid of his demise during an auspicious festival, which would also mean a period of mourning, the entire Karmekar clan gathers at the hospital praying for his speedy recovery. Every individual from the Karmekar family, who have gathered in the hospital, have their own reasons to be there.

Raja (Ashutosh Gowariker), a filmmaker in the film, catches the attention of all the relatives. It is interesting to see, how people get drawn towards successful people, get mesmerized by their sheer presence and make themselves associate with the person in some way or the other. Prasanna (Jitendra Joshi), son of Gajanan aspires to be a politician and he is worried for Ganapati festival arrangements getting affected. The first half unfolds the nature of various characters. One gets to see different shades of people. It is intriguing to see the inner conflicts and complexities of relationships. Various aspects of relationships are shown: the conflict between father-son, people unable to understand others' perceptions, unable to grow beyond one's own self-interest, even the dear and near ones playing dirty politics etc.

One can relate with the various characters shown: a son at loggerheads with his father, the wife of ailing person continually wailing, people just showing sympathy, IIM-pass out who finds himself a misfit and so staying aloof, a family matchmaker looking for the matchmaking processes even amidst crisis, another old person in the relatives' gang curious to know the use of ventilator and wanting to use the same etc.

Ashutosh and Jitendra stand apart as Raja and Prasanna respectively. Rather all the characters have given very much credible performances. A special mention to Satish Aalekar, who steals the show with his performance as Raja's father. Sulbah Arya as Manda – Prasanna's mother and Sukanya Kulkarni as Sarika – Prasanna's sister are also good. Guest appearances by Priyanka Chopra and Boman Irani also are very good. Actors Achyut Potdar, Sanjeev Shah, Abhijeet Chavan, Manmeet Pem, Swati Chintnis, Nana Joshi, Usha Nadarni, Nilesh Divekar, Nikhil Ratnaparkhi and rest of the cast have also give good performances.

In spite of some drag in the first half, overall, this film is certainly going to win your hearts. No melodrama is there in the film. Every character is integral part of the story. The film presents various characters as they are without judging them, so as a viewer, you also would accept the characters as they are, without disliking them. Certainly, the emphasis is given to father-son relationship, but in its pretext, the film also talks about various human relationships and emotions in a beautiful manner without any over-the-top drama.

Ventilator, a Marathi film produced by Priyanka Chopra and directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, turns out to be a must-watch film, which projects the values of family, human relationships, behaviour and emotional bonds. The film is bound to touch you, connect you with its very much relatable characters. Watch the film to see, how an ailing patriarch becomes a reason for the family union and how the hospital indoors witness conflicts, arguments, reconciliations, religious endeavours, comical situations etc. A beautiful film indeed !

Outstanding

Ventilator is an outstanding movie. There are directors in bollywood who create boring, stupid, monotonous movies & claim to be masters of love & emotion. Ventilator is a big learning for them.

Ventilator is a simple movie in terms of locations, production values & budget. But it is very high in terms of content, fun & emotions. It narrates a very touching story of a father-son, brothers, brother- sister. 2nd half is so high on emotions & beautifully waved that you cant help but cry. Perspective of a father & son towards their relation is beautifully narrated.

Overall its a must watch. Also since it is shown with English subtitles, even non-marathi people can watch & enjoy the movie.

Ventilator got a fair bit of publicity courtesy Priyanka Chopra who produced the movie, and of course it won quite a few awards.

It was on TataSky Film Fest channel this evening so I got to watch it. Surprise, surprise ... Ashutosh Gowariker the well known Bollywood director is the lead actor. Have to say, he did a good job.

The plot broadly centres around the decision of when and whether to switched off the ventilator of a man on his death bed and the quirks and foibles of his typical extended family - is quite different from most other movies and certainly from any Bollywood fare. The film is believably realistic for the most part and very well enacted. It did drag slightly around half way but picked up again soon after. Boman Irani had what one would call a surprise "guest appearance". That scene provided a healthy dose of humour and hilarity to the script. Boman is of course a very fine actor and it certainly shows. To give all the actors their due, everyone did a good job. Priyanka had a fleeting appearance as herself on a video call .. nice touch.

In summary, Ventilator is a good movie. Worth watching though it may not appeal to those seeking out and out entertainment.

I was struck both with joy and sadness, happiness and sorrow, enthusiastic as well excited...tears flowed down in each and every scene both through laughing aloud and in deep sorrow flowing down my memory lane and straight through my heart... My sincere advise, please take your entire family to watch this memorable cinema which will take a lifetime to come through again.. thumps up...double thumps up....more and more. The entire narration from the beginning to end will keep you engrossed to know exactly what happens next. The entire scene is so well timed by each and every character, that it makes this movie a must watch. Kudos to the scriptwriter, dialogue deliverance by the actors and above all the fine character played by each and one as though these are already existing in each and every household. Please do watch the scene and the one liner comedy both being humorous and hilarious.. will go on and on to acclaim this marvelous masterpiece...will remain in my heart... forever

Since last decade there is no shortage of themes in Marathi Cinema.

'Ventilator' is a beautiful journey of complicated human relations, father-son relationship, misunderstandings and priorities. The melange of humorous and sentimental scenes keeps audience involved throughout the film. Kudos to the entire team! The team of veteran actors did full justice to the script and portrayed each character with excellence. Especially 'Jitendra Joshi','Ashutosh Gowarikar' , 'Sukanya Mone' and 'Satish Alekar' just nailed it! In addition, it was delightful to see Unmesh uncle (our next door neighbor in Mumbai) in few scenes. :) It is admirable to see Priyanka Chopra promoting Indian regional films through her production house. In short, Priyanka's 'Purple Pebble Pictures Production' enters Marathi industry with a milestone movie and one can't afford to miss it.

Speechless movie about relationships.

Very few movies are made on father , son relationship. This one fits at the top of all of them. movie is set up in typical Maharashtrian family. At the time of Ganpati festival. it shows how peoples care about a person who is in hospital and on a ventilator. His son who is more interested in local politics than his father. ultimately knew how his father did his best to keep him alive when he was a child.

first half is full of comic scenes. And the second one is full of emotions. songs are good and comes in background. heart of the movie is Jitendra Joshi and Ashutosh Govarikar A truly touching movie.

Heart touching

A Heart-Touching Marathi Masterpiece that Portrays Emotions with Grace.

Ventilator, a Marathi film directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, is a captivating and emotionally charged cinematic experience that leaves an indelible impact on its audience. Released in 2016, the movie beautifully weaves together a tapestry of emotions, showcasing the complexities of familial relationships, the celebration of life, and the inevitability of mortality. With its compelling narrative, exceptional performances, and poignant storytelling, Ventilator emerges as a heart-touching gem of Marathi cinema.

At its core, Ventilator revolves around the character of Gaju Kaka (played brilliantly by Ashutosh Gowariker), who is admitted to the hospital and put on a ventilator. The news of his critical condition brings together the extended family, triggering a series of emotional moments that traverse a spectrum of feelings. The film masterfully delves into the intricate dynamics among the family members, unearthing hidden resentments, unresolved issues, and long-buried secrets.

Ventilator succeeds in portraying a wide range of emotions with utmost authenticity. It captures the anxieties, fears, and helplessness that surface during times of crisis, as well as the love, compassion, and unity that emerge when faced with adversity. Each character is crafted with depth and nuance, allowing the audience to connect with their joys, sorrows, and vulnerabilities. From tearful moments of despair to heartwarming instances of joy, the film beautifully tugs at the heartstrings of the viewers, leaving them emotionally invested in the story.

The performances in Ventilator are nothing short of exceptional. Ashutosh Gowariker, known primarily as a director, delivers a career-defining performance as Gaju Kaka. His portrayal of a vulnerable and emotionally conflicted individual is nuanced and deeply moving. Equally praiseworthy are the supporting cast members, including Jitendra Joshi, Sulabha Arya, and Priyanka Chopra (in a special appearance), who bring their characters to life with remarkable skill and conviction. Their performances lend authenticity to the story, making the audience empathize with the characters' emotional journey.

One of the film's strengths lies in its ability to seamlessly blend comedy and drama. Ventilator employs a lighthearted touch and witty dialogue to provide moments of respite amidst the otherwise emotionally charged narrative. The comedy acts as a release valve, allowing the audience to find solace and laughter even in the face of difficult situations. This delicate balance of tones enhances the film's realism, making it relatable and engaging.

Another noteworthy aspect of Ventilator is its inclusive storytelling. The film transcends language and cultural barriers, touching the hearts of audiences from different backgrounds. It showcases the universal themes of love, family, and human connection, making it accessible to a wide range of viewers. The narrative unfolds with cultural traditions and rituals, adding a distinct Marathi flavor to the storytelling, yet it remains relatable and emotionally resonant for audiences across the globe.

Ventilator is a cinematic masterpiece that showcases the true power of storytelling. With its heartfelt exploration of emotions, exceptional performances, and a well-crafted narrative, the film leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It reminds us of the importance of family, the fragility of life, and the beauty of human connections. Ventilator is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a heartwarming, thought-provoking, and emotionally charged cinematic experience.

Best movie I have ever seen

Ventilator movie is indeed a journey of emotions. Journey which we all love.. In a single line I can describe this movie as 'No nonsense movie'. Yes, each dialogue or each emotion, gesture has a meaning in this film and nothing is just filler. We hardly come across such movies nowadays. Ventilator has no loose ends at all. It just keeps on getting in your veins. I missed my family so much while watching this film. If you are watching it, make sure you watch it with your whole family.

There are so many characters and all have acted well.. Frankly speaking, I haven't seen such a fantastic script anytime in recent years. This movie will make you realize that you definitely have to respect and put more time to understand your parents' view/their opinions. Hats off to Jitendra Joshi, Ashutosh Gowariker and Rajesh Mapuskar.. Tremendous job!!

A typical maharashtrian thali
dharm_sezhi19 February 2017
What a refreshing movie to enjoy with the entire family! Move over the brainless wannabe comedies and the Bollywood themed action flicks or the high calorie cheesy romantic flicks. This movie exemplifies what movies can be when the basic ingredients like the story, screen play, characters are in the hands of a master chef. Rajesh Mapuskar from the Vidhu Vinod Chopra/Raju Hirani stable of movie making brings this family drama to life.

In typical Raju Hirani fashion the story assumes the role of the superstar hero and you empathize with the characters immediately. The character sketches are so well defined that you can find each of these characters around you without mistaking them for caricatures.

Although, the title betrays what the movie is about there are many layers to enjoy here. Right from the father-son relationship to the role of an extended family, to the importance we give to our traditions or a snarky reference to the exorbitant expenses of health care and the struggles of people who not necessarily have the means to afford such care. The movie definitely leaves you with enough to ponder on. In fact, the title could easily be a play on our relations being on a ventilator and it being up to us when we plug the ventilator off.

A must watch for every family, especially the younger generation to understand that family is there for a reason and Facebook and Twitter can't replace it.

Decent film in the Sai Paranjpe / Hrishikesh Mukherjee vein
ravenus15 November 2016
Ventilator is about what happens when the head of a large family is admitted to the ICU, the impact it has on the people around, humour and drama arising out of situations and the idiosyncrasies of the characters. The film had a special resonance for me, since part of it had been shot at the hospital where my dad had been in ICU a few months back, before he passed away. But even without that connection, many of us will identify with the events in the script - the rush and babble of relatives, the formalities that have to be attended to, the endless retelling of "What happened?", unasked second opinions and overwhelming sympathies, hidden motives and bickering that well up. The writing and direction have some real gems in this aspect. Also of note are the performances of the ensemble cast. Ashutosh Gowarikar has a major role playing (surprise, surprise) a successful film director and nephew of the ill man, and who also doesn't get along with his own father. Jitendra Joshi as the patient's son who resents his father for not respecting / accepting him is a revelation of good acting. In fact, most of the very large cast fit well in their roles and leave their mark.

One problem with the film is that it tries way too hard for its own sake. The script could definitely have done with some trimming and excision (a running gag with a fat kid is especially obnoxious), and the current 2.5 hour running time can be a slog. Especially towards the end, when the humour gives way to drama, you have a series of emotional climaxes coming one after the other and it gets a bit tiresome.

But overall it is still a worthwhile watch with the entire family. The film is obviously aiming for more than the usual Marathi speaking audience, since it is screened with English subtitles. They could think of expanding the audience further by dubbing it in Hindi and other languages. But for God's sake please do not remake the film with stars, that would just destroy its spirit.

Here's one for our elders!
rtoac19 December 2022
This is Marathi language film starring Ashutosh Gowariker. And I loved how he chose to play a self-righteous shade of grey. The film also takes up the sensitive topic of euthenasia while showing - through various characters - the role elders play in our lives.

This film treads a fine line and makes you rethink your priorities. Elders may not be able to keep pace, but they will always - in Bharat - continue to carry heart space. The experiences and blessings they bring into our lives can't be exported in pragmatic or medical value. This film is so beautiful - at times funny, at times drama and still ends up making you sentimental. Enjoyed all the performances and the brilliant story line.
