Indian streaming series such as Netflix’s “Heeramandi,” Prime Video’s “Mirzapur” or Disney+ Hotstar’s “Bad Cop,” could soon be more influential than Bollywood.
India’s massive population and its embrace of multiple forms of video streaming are having far-reaching implications for the country’s content industries, its wider economy and the country’s position on the international stage, says an in-depth new report.
“Beyond Screens – Streaming VoD’s Impact on the Creative Economy,” was published Wednesday. It was commissioned by Prime Video India and conducted by Singapore-based Media Partners Asia.
The report paints the picture of a sector that is now attracting close to $6 billion a year of local content investment, on a par with South Korea, and demonstrates that India is a top three market in terms of net new subscriber additions and revenue growth for both Amazon and Netflix.

Exclusive: Karan Anshuman and Suparn Varma, two of the first writers, directors and showrunners to move into India’s web series space, have co-directed Rana Naidu, Netflix’s Indian remake of Ray Donovan, produced by Sunder Aaron’s Locomotive Global. The Hindi-language show starts streaming worldwide from this Friday (March 10).
Anshuman is the showrunner on the series and co-directs with Varma. The cast is headed by two major stars of the Telugu-language film industry – Rana Daggubati and his uncle Venkatesh Daggubati – who appear on screen together for the first time, playing the warring father and son played by Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight in the original Showtime series.
Although initially resistant to the idea of doing a remake, Anshuman says he changed his mind after watching the original show, which ran for seven seasons and a movie. “What struck me is how families are integral to the story, and that obviously has relevance in India.

The film is produced by Zee Studios and Ghai’s Mukta Arts, the company behind iconic films “Karz” (1980), “Hero” (1983), “Karma” (1986), “Ram Lakhan” (1989), “Saudagar” (1991), “Khalnayak” (1993), “Pardes” (1997) and “Taal” (1999), all directed and produced by Ghai.
In his pomp, Ghai directed a virtual who’s who of Bollywood including Dilip Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Nutan.

Inside Edge Season 3(Amazon Prime Video, 10 Episodes)
For fans of the cricketing franchise that kicked off in 2017, Inside Edge is still likely to hold some interest, no ifs and ‘bats’ about it.
Batting and betting remain the series’ patent preoccupations. The characters, all 155 of them(no I wasn’t counting, just guessing) remain locked in a self-serving vault where they can only see the world asa place to mint money, and more money. Sporting ethics be damned.
The ten episodes of Season 3 have their high points. But the low points sadly exceed the high. There are many loose ends in the plot: for example, why is Richa Chadha(who gets top billing) missing in the first 5 episodes? Even after she makes a belated entry her character Zarina Mehta seems uncertain about her presence and her future. Flashbacks of her mother’s humiliation as a junior artiste are too perfunctory to...

Life is coming back film circle for Tanuj Virwani. Back in 2017 when he did the first season of Inside Edge, Ott medium in India was in its infancy. That was the time when Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani decided to take a plunge into the digital medium and came up with a big budgeted show in cricket that made quite a few heads then, courtesy the newspaper and media headlines that it picked from and presented the fact meets fiction tale.
Circa 2021 and the move into the web series arena has paid off quite well for the actor, what with close to 10 odd web series to his name and more coming. As for his character of Vayu Raghavan, it has found quite some popularity for itself, as it moves on from first to second and now third season with effortless ease, albeit with a lot more maturity being demonstrated. After all,...
