Nola Darling is back as the free-spirited gal in Spike Lee's reboot of his first feature film "She's Gotta Have It." Everything and each character has been updated for but Nola (DeWanda Wise of "The Harder They Fall") takes over the character played by Tracy Camila Jones in the film, but Nola remains essentially a carbon copy of this feisty gal. She still juggles her ego-driven paramours like tennis balls. Mars (Anthony Ramos) is the biggest change. He is half-black, half-Puerto Rican, but just as looney tunes as Spike Lee played him in his original 1986 classic. Lyriq Bent of "Acrimony" plays Jamie while Cleo Anthony of "Divergent" is the self-obsessed GQ model Greer Childs. Indeed, there is still a whole lot of humping going on in Nola's bed, and she cannot get enough sex as she pursues her dream of being an artist. She paints portraits here. Margot Bingham of "Barbershop: The Next Cut" takes over the role of Clorinda Bradford which was originated in the film by Josie Lee. Nola's one-time roommate who bailed because she kept encountering men in the bathroom that Nola and she shared in Nola's apartment. Lee has ramped up the production values so the show no longer looks like a threadbare indie show. Moreover, the television version is in color rather than black and white. The comedy is lighter than a soap bubble, and everybody spews poetic profanity. If you enjoyed the provocative original that sired the Netflix upgrade, you'll find that very little has changed.
