On impulse, I responded to an email about a movie from Africa. It's the best Us$2.99 that I've spent all month. The email came from Alamo On Demand and the film is Crazy World, which our own Andrew Mack wrote about last year, when we premiered the poster and a few still images in connection with a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. Made by Ugandan filmmaker Igg Nabwana, Crazy World is a continuous burst of joy. The plot really doesn't matter, but here's the description that Tiff's Peter Kuplowsky wrote: "The latest gonzo extravaganza from Wakaliwood, Uganda -- home of "Da Best Of Da Best Movies!" including cult hits Who Killed Captain Alex? and Fantastic Fest 2016 Audience Award winner Bad Black --...

Forget everything you think you know about filmmaking and narrative continuity. Forget production values and matching eyelines. Divorce yourself from your over-reliance on the 180-degree rule and your addiction to sumptuous cinematography and slick — or even barely adequate — visual effects. Instead, for 65 glorious, gonzo minutes, put aside the troubles of this crazy world to enjoy “Crazy World,” the magnificently bonkers, self-described “Greatest Eva Kids Movie” from Ugandan film phenomenon Igg Nabwana and his one-man Kampala-based movie industry, Wakaliwood.
Director, writer, producer, editor, cameraman, Igg Nabwana appears on camera himself to set the scene. In a prologue recorded during the coronavirus lockdown Nabwana genially shows us around his crumbly Wakaliwood “studios.” He introduces us to the Waka Starz — a gaggle of high-kicking local kids, who despite their diminutive size, are “Uganda’s Biggest Action Stars.” From there, it’s only one quick, lunatic anti-piracy infomercial, featuring locals chained up for illegally...

From November the 23rd till November the 28th, the German city of Constance will be hosting the Shivers Film Festival. It's the third time the festival is being held and the organizers have just revealed the entire line-up, which happens to be a very impressing one. For starters they have Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missoury, and you can take "starters" literally, as it is the fest's opening film. Other Screen Anarchy favorites include Can Evrenol's Housewife, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Bill Watterson's Dave Made a Maze and Nabwana I.G.G's utterly fantastic Wakaliwood extravaganza Bad Black. And hey, any festival which plays Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce and Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers gets our thumbs-up. And while Germany has had a (25...

Attention Canadian genre enthusiasts! The Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival is gearing up with another round of high-quality feature films. The festival’s 8th edition (November 15-18) is a four-day event that simply overflows with genre goodness. The 2017 program opens with Tyler MacIntyre’s Tragedy Girls, a surefire crowd-pleaser that is equal parts winking slasher spoof and skewering of social media obsessed millennials. High-octane action from South-Korea is sure to leave viewers gobsmacked as The Villainess makes her way to the Broadway Theatre. Miike Takashi’s Blade of the Immortal will step in to slice and dice any and all remaining pieces while Bad Black brings levity and a distinctly African approach to filmmaking in unison with its hail of bullets. On the more bizarre end of the...

Bad Black came out of nowhere to win the Audience Award at Fantastic Fest 2016; but anyone who has seen the film wouldn't be surprised. The work of self-taught filmmaker Nabwana I.G.G., is a sure-fire hit for fans of genre cinema, not to mention a great addition to the new wave of grassroots African film. Produced over several years with a tiny budget (estimated at about $65) in the slums of Wakaliga, it is a delirious, high-octane, Diy mix of action, street fighting, intense drama and comedy. The titular character, the bad-ass Bad Black, is a street-smart women (played by Nalwanga Gloria), in charge of the gang she has been with since she was a child, when she took revenge on their Fagan-like leader and shot...
