Wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed it
movieguy64530 October 2020
There are so many layers in this film that make it a lot of fun to watch. I thought it was genuinely funny with a good story and the acting was decent as well. I recognized one of the actors, Michael Knowles, and was pleasantly surprised to see him in a role outside of his usual capacity.

Overall, you'll be glad you watched the film. I was never bored and literally laughed out loud several times. Plus, if you know LA at all, you'll enjoy the locations where they shot the film. Overall - 7 out of 10.

Behind Hollywood

Warning: Spoilers
After an accident hurts a film's Latino star, the hunt for his replacement begins. The role of the undercover cop Basco is up for anyone who can get it, which seems to be a two-man race between Steve Fernandez, a struggling actor, and a man who has just thumbed a ride into town named Alejandro Costello, who isn't who he seems to be.

Welcome to Hollyweird, originally called Hóllyweird.

With the tagline "Some people lie to themselves, other people lie to the world. (Alguna gente se miente, otra gente miente al mundo)," this film presents the behind the scenes world of the Latino Hollywood experience. It comes from director Edwin Porres, who co-wrote this with Jaime Marie Porres.

It's interesting because Steve (Douglas Spain, But I'm a Cheerleader) is Latino but doesn't play to the stereotypes that Hollywood has placed upon them, while Alejandro (Michael J. Knowles) - spoiler - isn't Latino at all but may be better at playing the role than someone who has born into it.

Funny and telling look into Hollywood culture and stereotypes
ljlawsonsebs8 September 2020
Hollyweird is an enjoyable movie to watch for its youthful perspective, its engaging characters, and the underlying issues of race and culture that leave you thinking about it long after the movie ends. It weaves together a critique of Hollywood culture with the larger societal issue of how we perpetuate stereotypes. Steve is a struggling actor, whose kind face leads to typecasting as "the friend" or nice guy, not Latino enough for some of the leading roles he seeks. Meanwhile, Alex (Alejandro), who isn't Latino, plays up a more volatile personality and is successful, until he goes too far. Their two stories weave together to reveal the superficiality of the entertainment world with individual perseverance and authenticity. The movie is timely in how it exposes entertainment's perpetuation of racial and ethnic stereotypes. Los Angeles is a character in itself - the streets, the parties, the offices - captured beautifully.

Hollyweird is an original, comical satire, which brilliantly portrays the ironical typecasting of Latinos in the modern-day movie business. It's a feel good, entertaining, and enjoyable film, which provides a refreshing insight into the daily struggles of a Latino actor in the competitive world of Hollywood acting. Hollyweird brilliantly captures a diverse set of emotions through the successes and failures of its characters, making it a relatable experience to the everyday viewer.

Representation Matters
xoellie8 November 2020
Finally, a movie that accurately portrays the struggles in Hollywood, especially from the point of view of a Latinx. Well done! I wish every movie I watched was as diverse and real-world representative as this film. Hollyweird is unique, funny, has a lot of heart and perhaps most importantly, so crucially relevant today. I hope other films follow in its footsteps and I can't wait to see more from these writers.
