- Harinder "Harry" Singh Nehra (Shah Rukh Khan) is a tourist guide in Amsterdam. He is a cheap womanizer but a friendly and helpful guide. Harry often flirts with his clients, putting his job at risk.
After dropping a Gujarati family to the airport, Harry comes across Sejal Zaveri (Anushka Sharma), a member of the same Gujarati family, who has lost her engagement ring. Sejal knows that she will miss her flight but is adamant that she will not leave Europe without her ring. Sejal says that her fiance was upset to find that she lost his family ring, and he left on the flight. Her fiance said that this was a sign that they should not get married. Sejal tore her boarding pass and vowed to return only when she found the ring.
Sejal says that the ring is in the hotel where Harry had booked for the family. Harry offers to book a taxi for Sejal, but she forces Harry to take her to the hotel. Sejal says that most probably she dropped the ring at the restaurant of the hotel, where they had dinner the previous night and she got engaged to Rupen. Harry takes Sejal back to the hotel, but she does not find the ring. But then Sejal changes her statement and says that the engagement dinner took place on the night when they first arrived in Amsterdam. Which means that the ring could have been lost in any of the places that they visited during the tour.
Harry reluctantly agrees to help her find her ring, when Sejal says that she will complain to Harry's company about his behavior. Sejal offers to pay Harry for his time if he agrees to help her. Sejal even her family to call Harry's boss to force him to help her.
Harry tells Sejal that he is a cheap womanizer and has been fired multiple times from past jobs, as he had sex with his female tour customers. He says that he changed several cities and even been underground a few times to avoid public scrutiny of his actions. But Sejal is undeterred and believes that Harry is only saying all this to scare her. Harry wants Sejal to go with another tour guide Mayank (Aru Krishansh Verma), as he considers Mayank safe as he is getting married to his sweetheart in a few days. Harry says that if something goes wrong between him and Sejal, Harry will be deported from Europe. Sejal signs an indemnity bond with Harry to absolve him of all legal charges in case of any sex between the 2. Sejal says that she is a neat and clean woman and can control herself.
Sejal does not budge and so the duo land in Amsterdam. Harry tells Sejal repeatedly not to go out alone. Harry says that Sejal is sweet and cute and that it is impossible to look at her with lusty intentions. Sejal is insulted that Harry doesn't find her sexy and goes out in skimpy clothes in Prague. She attracts the attention of a pimp, and then screams for Harry to bail her out from marauding goons. Harry manages to escape from the disco bar with Sejal. They are afraid to go back to their hotel, and sleep in a secluded spot in the city.
He later tells her that he had left his home in Nur Mahal village and came to Canada to become a singer, which did not work out.
Both Harry and Sejal travel to places where he had initially taken the family, in search of the ring. During this, Harry falls in love with Sejal, but does not reveal it to her as she is engaged to Rupen. Sejal realizes that Harry is lonely and offers to behave as his girlfriend for the duration of the trip. Harry is very romantic with Sejal, which impresses her, and she wants Harry to train Rupen to be more like him. Harry repeatedly asks Sejal to leave him when the time comes. Sejal tells Harry not to worry and that she is not the type of person to ditch her fiance before their wedding. She invites Harry to her wedding though.
They soon learn that a criminal, Ghyassuddin Mohammed Qureshi (Gas) (Chandan Roy Sanyal), has stolen the ring. One restaurant owner in Frankfurt tells Harry that he gave a ring to a Portuguese girl Anastasia. Anastasia informs them that a Portuguese man names Gas had given her the ring and she threw it back at him as she did not like Gas. Harry & Sejal are puzzled as to how Gas got the ring and deduce that he stole it from Sejal.
They go to Gas to retrieve the ring, but Harry gets thrashed by Gas's men. Harry is able to fight them off by posing as an immigration agent, threatening deportation. Later, while looking for antiseptics in her bag for Harry, Sejal finds the ring and realizes that the ring was in her bag all along. However, she does not tell Harry about this.
The next day, Harry and Sejal fly to Frankfurt for the wedding of Mayank and Irina (Evelyn Sharma). At the wedding both get questioned by them about their relationship, seeing their evident chemistry. After the wedding, Harry and Sejal get into an argument about it. Harry does not admit his feelings, as he feels he is not good enough for her and she decides to fly back home.
At the airport, Sejal shows Harry the ring and tells him that it was in her bag all along. He asks her to take care and bids her goodbye.
She returns to India, and he returns to his work, but begins to miss her and gets depressed. On Mayank's insistence, Harry flies for Mumbai to go to her wedding. On reaching the venue, he learns that her marriage was called off and finds her sitting outside. They eventually share their feelings for each other, and go to Harry's village, Nur Mahal, where he reunites with his family and marries Sejal.
