Emma Banville (Helen McCrory) is a passionate and fearless human rights lawyer investigating miscarriages of justice and gets persecuted by the tabloids for setting the um, wrong man free.

Banville is such as do-gooder she has a Syrian refugee staying in her house. She is also tracked by the counter surveillance agency round the clock because one of her client is a suspected terrorist, not uncommon to have such clients if you are a human rights lawyer.

She has been bought in to investigate the unsafe conviction of Kevin Russell who has served 14 years for the murder of schoolgirl. As quick as a flash and some tapping heard in a police interview tape she has the conviction quashed and a retrial ordered. Michael Gambon makes an appearance at the end as a man riled by this and he phones a CIA agent.

A breezy first episode but also some clunky writing. I was bothered why the schoolgirl's family would threaten Banville, what if the police did get the wrong person?

Banville also seems to be haunted by some dark family secrets as we have scenes of her ill father. Writer Patrick Harbinson who has written for Homeland and 24, is aiming to make some kind of paranoid conspiracy thriller, this generation's Edge of Darkness, maybe.
