The Captain Is Back
michaelafamfulikova7 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Emotional episode from the very beginning. The Waverider crew is shipwrecked in the prehistoric era, yet thankfully the dinosaur-time story line is put into the background. Sara and Jax get into Rip Hunter's mind to try to get him back to the way he was before. They manage, yet are confronted by unexpected evil in form in some of the Legends doppelgangers, who seem to occupy Rip's mind. The effort of Sara and Jax to get the standard Rip back is really worth admiring. Victor Garber aka Martin Stein does show a vulnerability here, when he paces back and forth and is afraid whether the mind "occlumency", if i could use the Harry Potter comparison, would not harm Jax. One has to love Mick talking to Marty by suggesting overcoming his fears of Jax being harmed. The seriousness of the scene has unexpected funny ending when Mick puts a bottle of beer into the hands of shocked Martin. Ray Palmer is far more likable character than he was in the beginning, and the talk with Nate re the latter possibly dating Amaya, is one of the highlights of the show. And we get to see Gideon in person for the first time as human:) The moments when Rip wakes up and remembers everything, and when he shakes hands with the team, this is like wow and tear-jerking moment. And the Jax-Stein talk when the former asks the latter if he were alright, and the confession Martin does, shows great chemistry not only between the characters, but also the actors.

Honestly, its good to see the "normal" Rip back!

Best acting performances: Amy Pemberton as human-like Gideon Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer Arthur Darvill as Captain Rip Hunter Franz Drameh as Jax Jackson Victor Garber as Martin Stein Caity Lotz as Sara Lance

PS: Am I the only one to observe this, or has VG a haircut ?:O

Dyno-pee protective perimeter, Wit and Wisdom of Mick Rory, Rip/Gideon
imakk20017 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
9 minutes in, and soooo much action already! Yes, the Waverider got crashed again, still, it was fun because it set up the rest of the ep.

Mick should be the freaking leader with Sara/Rip as co-captains. Because seriously, when the hard decisions/actions have to be taken, Mick is the go-to guy time and again. I almost feel bad for Martin being this week's target of Mick's brand of wit and wisdom. Almost. Heh.

Ray's trip down cave-man days full of dyno-pee protection/Gertrude/little legends was FUN! The show is doing a really good job of fleshing out Mick and Ray this season without making them out of character, not an easy thing to accomplish.

So I guess Nate/Amaya will bow out at the end of the season a la the Hawks.

The Freeing of Rip Hunter was kind of sloggy but at least it's done and we're finally back on course as far as the team is concerned. Didn't see Rip/Gideon coming but yeah it makes sense. Every ship's captain worth his salt would be in a virtual relationship with his ship.

Score: 8.0

A good episode
Abdulxoxo9 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is pretty good episode, it's better than the last one for sure.

Lance and Jax literally spent the episode in Rip's mind, it was exciting, and they get to fight their respective evil selves. I wasn't sure how they were going to redeem Rip 'cause he seemed pretty unredeemable in the last few episodes but the idea of going into his mind and unlocking him was simple and it really worked. Now that "normal" Rip is back, I think it's time they face off the legion of doom.

I liked the conversation between Ray and Nate, the dialogue was surprisingly brilliant, and it's good to see Ray became serious even if it's just a for a moment. haha.

The CGI was good too, the dinosaur, and "evil Jax" were really well done.

Rory For Captain !
nebohr13 July 2022
It's nice to see that the extremely overly dramatic Mick Rory is inching, gradually (very gradually), out of the cage built for him by the writers. I would venture my opinion (else I wouldn't be here, right?) that there is a big future for those who act, not talk.

Why is Rip Back
ThomasDrufke9 March 2017
I'm not sure when this season became more about Rip Hunter than it did the Legion of Doom. Doesn't it feel like they have barely gotten their chance to do anything this season? Was anyone asking for Rip to come back? I was enjoying this season until it started heading in a questionable direction.

Rip somehow was able to say three words and shut down the entire Waverider through Gideon. I'm sorry, why didn't he do this the first time he tried to take the Legends out on the ship? What is the point of having him back anyway? Especially now that he's no longer a villain and a "Legend" again. Why aren't we getting more Doom centric episodes? I like this show the most when it's not taking itself too seriously and exploring the depths of time travel in weird and goofy ways. Having an entire episode centered around Rip's mind and how it works is not how I would like to spend 42 minutes.

Gideon made a real-life appearance in Rip's subconscious and Amaya, Ray, and Nate all had a run-in with a prehistoric dinosaur. It was quite the episode, but nothing I wouldn't expect from Legends. I would just like to know the point of Rip's side arc. The focus isn't really on the journey to avenge Rex Tyler anymore. There were some cool moments and surprises to this episode, but as of right now, I'm starting to question whether or not this show is worth watching. Making Rip's walk back into the bridge slow-motion and "epic looking"? No, just no.
